* ''Manga/HoshinEngi'':
** Yozen is, like almost everybody else, considerably stronger than the main character, Taikobo. His PowerCopying makes him so versatile that he once dedicated a whole [[BadassBoast pre-asskicking speech]] to [[LampshadeHanging explain just how broken he was]]. However, he still plays [[TheLancer second banana]] to Taikobo because the latter is just [[TheChessmaster so much smarter]].
** Downplayed in the case of Taikobo's self-appointed disciple Bukichi. While he doesn't take part in the fight like other characters, he is still extremely useful because of his impressive strength and vitality and his varied mundane competence.

* The manga ''Onee-sama and the Giant'' runs on this. The titular OneeSama, Hinako, is a one-armed Japanese high schooler with no combat training, powers, or abilities (having explicitly refused the standard NewLifeInAnotherWorldBonus) beyond etiquette training and [[{{Gayngst}} Catholic guilt]]. The titular giant, Alice, is [[BigLittleBrother taller than a house with physical abilities to match]], an excellent fighter, and [[MagicKnight the only giant in the world capable of using magic]]--and given the rules of magic in the setting, this makes her possibly the most powerful magic-user in the world. Hinako explicitly isn't even TheSmartGuy of the two, since she lacks any survival or leadership skills and isn't particularly aware of the local culture and history or even [[GenreBlindness typical isekai-fantasy story conventions]]. Despite this, she is considered the senior of the two, and therefore Alice defers to her. The reason why comes down to a mixture of Alice's deep respect and love for Hinako thanks to Hinako having been her FirstFriend, Hinako's etiquette training having been genuinely useful for Alice in the past, and the fact that Hinako may not be more knowledgeable or intelligent, but she is more mature and therefore tends to do the talking.

* Parodied in ''Manga/MobPsycho100''. Reigen is the owner of the [[WhoYouGonnaCall Spirits & Such Consultation Office]] while Mob is his employee/apprentice, but Reigen is a charismatic fraud with no psychic powers just winging it while Mob is one of the most powerful characters in the series and usually able to vaporize spirits with a finger. Reigen usually only handles obvious hoax cases himself while leaving actual spirits to Mob, under the excuse pretense of "letting the apprentice handle the small-fry" or something similar. In reality, however, Reigen is extremely valuable to Mob as a mentor and friend and his smooth-talk is very helpful in certain situations, even if he isn't the most useful in combat.

* Mendoza in ''Anime/TheMysteriousCitiesOfGold'': He's easily the most competent fighter in Season 1, holding his own against entire squads of Olmecs and Spaniards, and rarely takes an injury. He's also the only level-headed adult in the group (which isn't hard when you consider Sancho and Pancho are dumber than rocks), and both a famously skilled navigator, knowledgeable about survival, a cunning strategist and [[IndyPloy quick thinker]]. He's half the reasons the three kids survive Season 1. As part of his character development he seems to become aware of his sidekick status, becoming far more invested in helping the children and protecting them than his own goal of becoming rich. Interestingly, he also shows a good example of this trope interacting with CompetenceZone: He's awful at solving the various riddles and traps left by the {{Precursors}}, which leaves the three protagonist, Esteban, Zia, and Tao, to do the plot critical stuff, while Mendoza focuses on keeping them safe.

* ''LightNovel/ILeftTheARankParty'' starts off with Yoke getting fed up with being this and quitting his high rank party that treats his efforts like garbage. It quickly becomes apparent that, without Yoke, his old party is ''hopelessly incompetent'' at even basic adventuring logistics. Furthermore, Yoke was also a SupportPartyMember whose buffs on allies and debuffs on enemies had been the ''entire reason'' the party got as highly ranked as it did in the first place. When Yoke forms his own party consisting of low-ranked adventurers he’d mentored a few years ago, his hyper competence means their rise is ''meteoric''.

Marik lost to Yugi multiple times through proxies during Battle City, despite regularly cheating or otherwise playing dirty (though granted, it ''is'' Yugi.) Rishid, meanwhile, won ''twelve'' Locater Cards over the course of the tournament (enough for both his boss and himself to qualify), and the only time we see him Duel, he beats Jounouchi around the block while playing completely fairly. However, Jounouchi realizes that Rishid was probably not Marik ''because'' he's playing fair, forcing Marik to have Rishid play a fake Winged Dragon of Ra to maintain their cover (since Marik was posing as a new friend to them). Unfortunately, the real Ra did not approve in the slighest and more-or-less struck the two duels ''with lightning'' with Jounouchi winning because he was the first to recover. (Conversely, [[SuperpoweredEvilSide Dark Marik]] would have ''lost'' to Jounouchi if the latter hadn't collapsed from injuries endured prior.)

** Alphonse. Even though his brother doesn't treat him as a sidekick, he's seen this way by all the other characters. He has less credentials, of course, and needs a transmutation circle to perform alchemy (until his memories of his trip through the Gate of Truth are restored). But he is a very competent alchemist on his own and a greater fighter than his brother. He even TookALevelInBadass in Brotherhood and learned a foreign form of remote transmutation.
