They had dreams of forming a sect together that valued common ideals over blood ties. Xiao Xingchen even willingly gives up his eyes for Song Lan despite the two falling out soon afterwards. Song Lan then travels for years in order to find Xiao Xingchen again to apologize. When Xiao Xingchen is tricked into killing him, as he is dying, Song Lan decides not to pass his sword to Xiao Xingchen to spare him the pain of knowing what he has done. When he does find out, Xiao Xingchen kills himself. After the entire Yi City arc, Song Lan returns to his travels with Xiao Xingchen's spirit in a pouch, alongside their two swords strapped to his back.

** As the two juniors with the most importance to the plot, Lan Sizhui and Jin Ling have some popularity together in both the Chinese and English fandom.
