Scully, as always, tries to reason with him to stop or at least wait for the proper authorities to dig for him. When it's apparent he's relentless in his endeavor to uncover the buried body, Scully instead begins helping him dig. For once, she can see how much it means to him and foregoes her logical instincts to help him instead.



** Additionally, Scully's face when he barges into the courtroom after she thinks he might be dead. She looks so subtly relieved and excited to see him. You know, in her very Scully-like way.

Scully then invites him inside, where Frohike reminisces that Mulder really was one of the better people to be around.

She even tells Mulder that he is welcome to sit with her and Melissa after they take Scully off of life support. She also calls him from the hospital when she's found, and either she or Melissa called him later in the episode to tell him that she had come out of her coma. This connection comes up a couple more times in the series, most notably in the episode "Wetwired".
