Lorelai is an abusive Big Sister Bully. Her not directly insulting her sister's sexual orientation on one occasion doesn't make it heartwarming. It's not even clear if Molly is even out to her family at this point.

The heartwarming part comes when Lorelai says how she likes looking at Giovanni's butt and Molly asks why she would want to do that, Lorelai responds that of course ''she'' wouldn't understand. Most of the time the response to Molly's questioning would be something akin to "you'll understand when you're older" but Lorelai instead just responds that Molly, on a personal level, wouldn't get it. Not only is it nice that despite her self-centered nature, Lorelai still pays enough attention to Molly to pick up on that, but it’s very sweet in general to see that kind of writing happen instead of typical erasure.
