** Stella Crangle, who gives birth in prison. Illiterate due to her orphanage being repeatedly bombed during the war, she is hell-bent to improve herself and her life. Sister Julienne helps get her a job and childcare, recognizing she's been dealt a bad hand but is refusing to let it get her down.
