(Which, as good ol' ComicBook/AnimalMan immediately notes, explains quite a bit.)

** '''Out of universe answer:''' [[GenreSavvy You really don't]], but as a friend to left handed people, I have to say that Sinestro is derived from the Latin "left handed" which is only used as a synonym for evil "out of dark ages" ignorance. And yeah, Sinestro wears his ring on his left hand most adaptations I've seen him in, so his parents may well have literally named him "Lefty" on purpose. So even if I ran into someone named Sinestro in real life, I'd at least give them the benefit of the doubt.

*** Hal '''was''' the closest match for the ring when Abin Sur summoned him. This has been an actual plot point once with Guy Gardner being passed over because he wasn't close enough. Also remember that Abin Sur triggered the search himself rather than leaving it to Mogo as standard procedure would dictate, so criteria would be somewhat different.

*If the Green Lanterns are SpacePolice than whose law do they enforce? The law of the individual planets they patrol? The Guardians'? ValuesDissonance seems like it would cause problems either way and I imagine people don't want foreigners coming in and enforcing foreign law on them.

No, in ''ComicBook/TheBooksOfMagic'', the Phantom Stranger notes that in prehistory Earth was both a globe that cooled from star-stuff and developed life over eons ''and'' a disk that was created by the gods and overrun by demons. TheDCU has a MultipleChoicePast. Both Vandal Savage and Cain of Dreaming are the Biblical Cain, and doubtless others besides, depending on the story being told. Why? I dunno, Hypertime or whatever.

not all real life Sapphires are blue - some are pink or even violet! Reality Is Unrealistic sometimes

Added DiffLines:

***This works for species like DexStar's where there's a tail but it does beg the question of how B'ox, a literally box-shaped GL with no visible limbs ''at all'', wears one.

Added DiffLines:

** Also, from an actual Real Life perspective? [[http://www.gemselect.com/other-gems/pink-sapphire.php I am delighted to expand your knowledge by informing you that not all sapphire aka corundum stones are even blue]]! (Yeah, [[RealityIsUnrealistic I was surprised too]]) It's just that blue is the most famous and iconic color of "sapphire" stones. Notice the ones on ''that'' page though include some that could easily double as "Star" Sapphires, whether we're going for Magenta shades or the more purple violets! (And in before somebody mentions "about that magenta thing, pink is not violet!!" - yes, it is, at least in Fuschia/Magenta hues it can be. Specifically, the hues they tend to color the Star Sapphires in in classic color schemes from Silver Age onward are classifiable not just as "pink" but ''also'' as a variant of "red-violet", which I discovered when I actually Googled the latter. FridgeBrilliance since it keeps it separate from blue-violet...which is what actual "indigo" is in Real Life!)

Added DiffLines:

*** Probably a bit of both: I recall a panel where John Stewart is telling Guy to stick to the "telepathic" communications on their Rings so as not to ruin their attempt at stealth or something. So there's obviously an option for telepathic communication, even if it's just "I think we should make a net".

"why not batman?" oh my friend you have no idea :D

Added DiffLines:

*** Also "why not X person instead? why not Batman?" has been addressed several different ways in multiple comics and oh my gosh you have no idea how happy I am to nerd out about this for you (and funny you specifically mention "Superman, Flash, Wonder Woman" as the examples because the first case makes that perfect by answering with a sounding "YES and it was INSANE"):
**** Bruce Wayne WAS chosen by the Green Ring...in Earth-23, the universe of the Elseworld Graphic Novel ''In Darkest Knight'', where he is a Green Lantern ''instead'' of becoming Batman. Given how that comic goes? Well. He gets too obsessive and too potentially dangerous, because it's ''Bruce Wayne'' after all, and goes off the rails, requiring the Guardians of the Universe to go out of their way to recruit - yes! - Superman, Wonder Woman and the Flash to deal with him. The comic actually is CrazyAwesome and takes RefugeInAudacity I highly recommend it for sheer fun factor, but it does also basically acknowledge ''why'' those characters weren't used as Green Lanterns more often - namely, that Batman's personality does not mesh well with having that kind borderline unlimited power, and when you have the kind of superpowers that Supes, Wondy and the Flash have the Green Power Ring becomes ''ridiculously'' overpowered from a storytelling standpoint (in fact, the Elseworld works as well as it does in part because it only ''briefly'' touches on ''why'' they'd be so powerful). Think about it: yeah, the Green Ring doesn't work on Yellow...but Supes is ''powered'' by yellow light and Flash ''can run faster than'' the speed of it. And Wonder Woman is too badass to ''need'' the Ring to kick your ass, it's just a stellar bonus to her already insanely powerful existing abilities.
****There's an Elseworld called ''Superman: Last Son of Earth'' which inverts Kal-El/Clark Kent's origins, making him a human whose parents sent him from a dying Earth to Krypton. He becomes Green Lantern of Sector 2813 (the one next to ours!) by receiving the dying Tomar-Re's Ring (instead of Abin-Sur's), and [[spoiler:saves Krypton from the explosive demise it had in the original canon]]. Turns out he makes a great Green Lantern actually.
**** But the REAL reason it ''usually'' doesn't pick those people, is for the same reason that Hal Jordan was chosen instead of Guy Gardner and comes from older comics, actually: the Ring scans the Sector, sure, but it picks the geographically closest qualified candidate ''first''! That's right: Hal's a Green Lantern because Guy was further away. Presumably, so were any other potentially perfect candidates who happened to have other powers, since having say, Kryptonian biology never stopped a Ring from choosing Sodam Yat (who is from Daxam; Daxamites have the same power set/biological thing with Yellow Sunlight that Kryptonians do, because of a shared biological origin - most continuities have held Daxam was colonized by ancient Kryptonians)
**** Also, a few years back there was a chapter of ''Green Lantern'' in which Hal let Bruce try his Ring on. Bruce had trouble getting it to work since it ''required'' you to process and "overcome" your fears, and it was a harder than he thought and basically physically hurt to try. He succeeded in making it work, but also basically told Hal he could keep the damn thing because he's perfectly happy being Batman, thanks.
**** '''Although''', making it even more interesting, the main comics continuity Batman in the modern age - in that same continuity, shortly after that actually - was ''almost'' chosen by a Sinestro Corps Power Ring! [[FridgeBrilliance Because you see he can Instill Great Fear...]] It rejected him in the end though because it detected the "previous presence of a Green Lantern Ring"; Hal having recently let him try on his Green Lantern Power Ring meant it thought Bruce might be a Green Lantern himself (since they can take the Rings on and off, you see) and it went ''lol nope'' and rejected what it figured was a potential enemy of Sinestro. Usually when a Yellow Power Ring chooses a former Green Power Ring wielder, it seems it's by Sinestro's own choice (such as when he [[spoiler:forced one on Soranik Natu]] in the ''Sinestro'' series).

** Actually not only can you wield more than one, but if you get all seven colors to work for you you become a White Lantern. Which makes sense (as much sense as comic book "science" fiction does anyway) when you consider the rainbow is just white light split into its components. It's a tricky proposition though, since some of them - namely Orange (Greed), Red (Rage) and Violet (Love) can be really strong and tend to influence their user more than the others if you're not careful. Guy Gardner IIRC struggled with this; a Red Power Ring attached itself to him and he was a sort of hybrid Green/Red Lantern for a while...but the Red Light kept trying to influence him.

***** Might be multiple sets from different points in Earth's history coexisting. SevenSoldiers states outright that Earth has had several dozen Camelots throughout its history, with similar persons and events happening each time in a recurring historical motif. Cain and Abel were probably something similar- the first murder in any society or subspecies probably just kept following that motif of two brothers, one a shepherd and one a farmer.

* Okay, I'm sorta loving the LightsOut arc and all but one thing that confused the hell out of he is, how are they using up the emotional spectrum faster than those of Relic's universe? I mean their justification for this is that now their are more corps than in Relic's universe, but the other six corps were fairly recent additions. Not to mention Relic's universe also had seven versions of 'lightsmiths', who in addition to being much larger than beings of this universe were also maintaining CITIES of light with the emotional spectrum 24/7 in addition to other constructs as well as usage in mundane lifestyles (Example:Becoming a Red Lightsmith apparently being offered as a form of immortality).

** The ring's basic programming was based on Green Lantern rings. It normally seeks out persons of great compassion because this is the emotion the Indigo Tribe is based on. As has been pointed out, when left to its own devices the rings will seek out compassionate people. This was proven in ''BlackestNight'' when the ring spoke to Ray Plamer, explaining why he was chosen. Similarly, Proselyte sought out Shane Thompson when he was being crushed by an overturned ambulance but still more concerned for his patients than his own fate. It's been established before that the Corps can choose their candidates before they send the rings, which is Mogo's job. Presumably Indigo-1 does something similar, overriding the basic programming and has them seek out fellow villains.
