* KatanasAreJustBetter: Everyone wields Katanas, by and large, with the exception of two: Sahara (who wields a spear, as he points out he's not a good swordsman) and Kiga (who wields a sling to throw stone and as an improvised flail).

* PowerWalk: The assassins do this just before the battle.

* BladeOnAStick: Sahara's specialty is the ''yari''.

* WhatIsThisFeeling: Pain, for Naritsugu.

** Naritsugu is introduced raping a woman for [[ForTheEvulz no particular reason]] and later murdering her husband also for no reason while making cruel jokes. When he beheads the enraged husband, it takes him three swings to do it after stabbing him, demonstrating that while a savage butcher who murders indiscriminately, he has no actual skill in ''combat''.

* RainOfBlood: Happens after [[spoiler:one of the thirteen hugs one of Naritsugu's mooks with a lit stick of dynamite in hand in his death throes. The film cuts to Owari fighting mooks elsewhere as the explosion goes off and gore rains over all the assembled fighters]].

* FaceDeathWithDignity: The samurai use this as a code of honor. Guess who ''didn't'' face his death with dignity?

** Naritsugu is introduced raping a woman for [[ForTheEvulz no particular reason]] and later murdering her husband also for no reason while making cruel jokes.

* IKnowYouKnowIKnow: When Hambei and Sinzaemon meet in the latter's house, the subtext of their conversation is basically "I know you're going to kill Naritsugu, and you know I know you're going to kill Naritsugu".

* KillEmAll: [[spoiler:Only two of the Thirteen survive the battle at the end of the film. Still better than Naritsugu and his forces, who all end up dead.]]

* WeaponOfChoice: Everyone wields Katanas, by and large, with the exception of two: Sahara (who wields a spear, as he points out he's not a good swordsman) and Kiga (who wields a sling to throw stone and as an improvised flail).

* VeryLooselyBasedOnATrueStory: Lord Naritsugu was real historical figura, a heir to the shogunate known for his petty cruelty (though nowhere near as cruel as the character in the film) [[spoiler: who died in unclear circumstances (most likely simply poisoned) on his way back from Edo]]. Otherwise the film is fictional.

* DueToTheDead: Naritsugu earns more bastard points by [[spoiler:kicking Hanbei's head like a soccer ball after Hanbei had given his life to protect Naritsugu. When Shinzaemon calls him on this, Naritsugu invites him to do the same to his own head]].

* ArcWords: "Total Massacre" is the message written by the maimed peasant woman in a scroll of paper (because she has no limbs or tongue). It is used to refer to both the sins of Lord Naritsugu or what the 13 Assassins are about to do to ''him''.
