When it came out, ''Son Of The Mask'' got near-universally negative reviews from critics and audiences for being [[{{Sequelitis}} inferior to the original film]] and for its massive amounts of UncannyValley.[[note]]Sad thing is on the special features on the DVD, the cast and production team is very happy about making it. They talk excitedly about their roles and describe the [[SpecialEffectFailure top-notch special effects]] this movie "pioneered". ([[TookTheBadFilmSeriously They were proud of their baby, in other words.]])[[/note]] As the movie had time to settle down, though, the film has been somewhat VindicatedByHistory; reactions have progressed to mostly mixed and [[CriticalBacklash many don't see it as bad as it was made it out to be when it was released]], citing it at least as a nice love letter to old school cartoons (particularly those of Creator/TexAvery and Creator/BobClampett). Alan Cumming's portrayal of Loki was also applauded.

* SadlyMythtaken: Odin and Loki are not father and son in Myth/NorseMythology, they are bond brothers. It's such a huge mistake that just might as well admit the writers just didn't care. They're second cousins at most. And Loki would not have fooled Odin by telling him Balder was coming back because Balder is [[DeadToBeginWith dead]]... because Loki killed him (indirectly, but still).

Nine months later, out pops young Alvey Avery, the [[TheEponymousShow titular]] son of the Mask, who's sometimes cute, but mostly an [[{{Jerkass}} insufferable sadist]] and smack dab in the middle of the UncannyValley. When Tonya leaves town for business, Tim is left taking care of him, and Alvey proceeds to drive his dad totally insane with his bizarre abilities - which he does not need the Mask to use. Joining the battle royale is the family dog, Otis, who wears the Mask and uses its powers [[FamilyUnfriendlyViolence to try to kill Alvey because he doesn't want to compete for Tim's attention]]. ([[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids Are we having fun yet?]])

''Son of the Mask'' is the 2005 sequel to the 1994 Creator/JimCarrey [[FantasticComedy fantasy comedy]] ''Film/TheMask'', which was itself based on the [[ComicBook/TheMask Dark Horse Comics series of the same name]] about a magical green mask that gives [[RealityWarper strange, almost unlimited powers]] to anybody who wears it, but also causes them to lose all their inhibitions and self-control. The violent tone of the comics was toned down in the first film adaptation to suit Carrey's comedy stylings, so fans clamoring for a more loyal adaptation were displeased even more when ''Son of the Mask'' reduced the style further, to the point of making it [[LighterAndSofter family-oriented]].
