revolves around a Polish-American family in a the Detroit suburb of Detroit, Hamtramck, Michigan. Jadzia Pzoniak (Lena Olin) (Olin) is the matriarch of the family, she who married Bolek (Gabriel Byrne) (Byrne) while she was pregnant.
