The first FilmOfTheBook of the Thomas Harris novel ''RedDragon'', this 1987 film features Hannibal Lektor (note the spelling) as played by Brian Cox. Like in ''SilenceOfTheLambs'', he is used to help an FBI investigator. His name is Will Graham and he is trying to find a serial killer known as Francis Dollarhyde, nicknamed "The Tooth Fairy". As he tries to find the serial killer, Graham's personal demons start to haunt him, affecting his work and his relationships.

The film relied on heavily-tinted scenes and overpowering music. The use of [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"]] is very strange to anyone who has ever seen its use in ''TheSimpsons'' (it times at 17 minutes and 1 second on the album) and looks very much like a movie from TheEighties.

* DisabledLoveInterest: A blind woman at Dolarhyde's employer happens to mention that she always wished she could have "seen" a Bengal tiger (by touching it). Dolarhyde knows someone at a zoo where they happen to have a Tiger having dental work under anesthesia. After Dolarhyde's lady friend gets to touch this tiger all over, she goes home with him and engages is very vigorous woman-on-top sex with him.

* FridgeBrilliance: You might find all of the stark colors strange, and attribute it to Michael Mann's TheEighties standard, but then you have to understand that the entire film is about perception and seeing ("Ever see blood in the full moonlight? It's quite black"), and Dollarhyde works as a photo developer. It's purposeful irony that his object of lust ''is blind''.

Later [[{{Remake}} re-made]] as ''RedDragon'', this time featuring Anthony Hopkins as Lecter; YourMileageMayVary as to whether it was better or worse than the original.

* [[EvilisHammy Evil is Hammy]]: Largely averted with Brian Cox's cold and understated portrayal of Lecktor (in contrast to [[AnthonyHopkins Anthony Hopkins]] in [[SilenceoftheLambs Silence of the Lambs]]).

* PoliceProcedural: The UrExample. From this film, shows like ''[=unSub=]'', ''{{CSI}}'', ''CriminalMinds'' and so on would spring.
