* TheEighties: The title cards inform us that the film takes place in "1983 A.D."

* BerserkButton: Jeremiah does NOT like being laughed at.
* BlackBestFriend: Caruthers, to Red. Whether or not they are actually best friends is debatable, as Caruthers implies they've not seen each other in a long time. But Red apparently trusts him enough to let him hold onto his weaponry, and Caruthers respects him enough to keep said weapon in top condition and to fashion custom ammunition for it.

[[spoiler: But their [[VoiceOfTheLegion voices are demonic,]] they can be called and bargained with using a demonic instrument, and some of them seem to be made at least partially out of metal. One of them even brushes off a crossbow bolt through his throat.]]

* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: The cult's biker henchman. They are called forth using "the Horn of Abraxas": a weird looking, (and weirder sounding) musical instrument. Their appearance is barely humanoid, and they behave like demonic entities in every way. But they ride perfectly ordinary motorcycles and one even rides a 4-wheel ATV. Later, Caruthers explains that [[spoiler:they used to be a drug-running outlaw biker gang until the dealer they worked for gave them something that really messed them up.]] Even then, though, the film goes out of its way to emphasize that these things are no longer fully human, if they ever were to begin with.
** Then there's the issue of the Chemist. [[spoiler:He is implied to be the drug maker who turned the bikers into what they are. Is he really communicating telepathically with Red, just a really good guesser, or just plain crazy?]]

* NoSell: [[Spoiler: Red nails one of the demonic bikers through the trachea with a crossbow bolt. The biker barely even considers this worth responding to.]]
* NothingIsScarier: Carefully and effectively utilized with the Black Skulls. Even when they are in full view they are always lit in such a way that we can never tell exactly what they are or what is wrong with them.
** Used effectively again with the sect's Bible. We never find out what's in it, but the look on Red's face when he finds it indicates it's not something you'd learn in Sunday school.
* OverlyLongGag: After sounding the Horn of Abraxas, there's a long, awkward bit with one of the cultists playing with the power window on the van.

* PhysicalScarsPsychologicalScars: Mandy has an unsettling scar down the left side of her face. It is never explained, but it along with her haunted demeanor and the ugly story she tells about her father forcing children to kill baby birds hints that she has had a very hard life.
* ReligionOfEvil: Jeremiah's cult. Made scarier because it's never made clear exactly ''what'' they believe. They look like Jesus hippies and display crosses, but Jeremiah is disdainful of Jesus at one point. They also carry an artifact called "the Horn of Abraxas" and a sword with an eyeball in the hilt that Brother Swan claims came from the Abyss. Then there's their alliance with... ''whatever'' the Black Skulls are. Finally, there's the Bible that Red finds (see [[NothingIsScarier Nothing Is Scarier]] above.)

* ShoutOut: Mandy informs Marlene that she and Red live near [[Franchise/FridayTheThirteenth Crystal Lake.]]
