*VillainDecay: Freddy Kruger in this movie is basically a complete comical goofball and a major far cry from the once scary threatening villain he used to be.

** FridgeBrilliance shows that out of all the Nightmare movies, with the exception of Jesse's mom in 2 and Alice's reformed dad in 5, Freddy Krueger was the only parent in the series worth a damn. Abusive, aloof, or drunken parents are all over the place in the series. Meanwhile, in the flashback sequences, Fred Krueger is shown doing absolutely nothing other than loving that little girl for all she's worth.

* SeriesFauxnale: It depends whether you accept ''Film/FreddyVsJason'' as a sequel to this film, or an {{interquel}} set earlier in the series.
** There should be no question that Freddy vs. Jason follows this one... Footage from this movie is used in the prologue covering Freddy's backstory. New Line's official position is that FvsJ follows this one as well.

* MoodWhiplash: This is the most comedic movie in the series but has some of the series' darkest moments. The movie that has Freddy riding a broomstick and playing a videogame also has him strangling his wife in front of their daughter because she found out he's a child murderer.

Added DiffLines:

* CanonDiscontinuity: Like the second film, its place in the series' continuity is somewhat nebulous. When ''Film/FreddyVsJason'' rolled around it showed Springwood as mostly normal and having dealt with Freddy by "forgetting" about him, a scenario that seems to flow on from the fifth film more than it does this one. For this reason, some fans treat ''Freddy Vs. Jason'' as an {{Interquel}} set before ''Freddy's Dead''.

* ExecutiveMeddling: A rare after-the-fact example. When the movie was in U.S. theaters in 1991, it ran 100 minutes, featuring many character moments and introductions (Maggie's foster mother doesn't just randomly show up near the end of the movie). However, for whatever reasons, New Line Cinema cut the movie down to 88 minutes for all home video releases, which unfortunately is all that has been available to this day. The German version of the movie, while cut down from the 100 minute version, also featured many of the scenes removed from the home video version.

* BewareOfHitchhikingGhosts: It uses the "apparition in front of the car" version. A little girl appears on the road as the characters are driving to Springwood, telling them "Go back!". Only one character can see her, and he jerks the wheel, nearly crashing the vehicle. Interestingly, the vision is not a ghost, but actually a manifestation of another character when she was younger. The character in question was actually the one driving, but couldn't see her younger self, presumably because she was fully awake.
