* LighterAndSofter: While ANightmareOnElmStreet5TheDreamChild tried to go back to a more serious horror roots of the first few elm street movies, this movie is completely campy and silly and almost feels like a parody of the elm street movies.

* CurbstompBattle:[[spoiler: the final battle between Maggie and Freddy is pretty much one-sided with Maggie completely dominating Freddy]]

* ThreeDMovie: The final portion of the film was filmed in 3D. When Maggie puts on a pair of 3D glasses, audience is supposed to do the same.

** FridgeBrilliance shows that out of all the Nightmare movies, with the exception of Jesse's mom in 2 and Alice's reformed dad in 5, Freddy Krueger was the only parent in the series worth a damn. Abusive, aloof, or drunken parents are all over the place in the series. Meanwhile, in the flashback sequences, Fred Krueger is shown doing absolutely nothing other than loving that little girl for all she's worth.

* SeriesFauxnale: It depends whether you accept ''Film/FreddyVsJason'' as a sequel to this film, or an {{interquel}} set earlier in the series.
** There should be no question that Freddy vs. Jason follows this one... Footage from this movie is used in the prologue covering Freddy's backstory. New Line's official position is that FvsJ follows this one as well.

* OmnicidalManiac: Freddy Krueger has ultimately destroyed Springwood completely by killing all its children and reducing their remaining parents to broken messes. He announces his plan to Maggie to continue doing it everywhere else -- as Freddy says, "Every town has an Elm Street".

* ExecutiveMeddling: A rare after-the-fact example. When the movie was in U.S. theaters in 1991, it ran 100 minutes, featuring many character moments and introductions (Maggie's foster mother doesn't just randomly show up near the end of the movie). However, for whatever reasons, New Line Cinema cut the movie down to 88 minutes for all home video releases, which unfortunately is all that has been available to this day. The German version of the movie, while cut down from the 100 minute version, also featured many of the scenes removed from the home video version.

* DarkerAndEdgier: The victims Freddy goes after have significantly-harsher past histories (child abuse, incest and [[spoiler: being the daughter of a serial killer]]) than those from previous films.
** LighterAndSofter: Despite this (and the tagline on the film poster, seen above), this film is by far the most comedic in the series, and the death scenes are pretty light on gore.

* BuryYourDisabled: The deaf kid Carlos becomes Freddy's first dream victim.

* CreatorCameo: Robert Shaye appears as the guy selling bus tickets.
