* WhamLine: After Riley attempts to , she says to him, "Please don't tell Olivia about this." The wham comes from the audience spoiler:knowing Kayla didn't do anything wrong and that Riley definitely doesn't want CoolBigSis Olivia to know about what happened, but that Kayla won't tell her or anyone because of how deeply she thinks she's to blame.

* PracticallyDifferentGenerations: Not a literal example, but invoked by the high schoolers that Kayla hangs out with for one scene, one of whom argues that even though Kayla is only 4 years younger than them, the age at which technologies/apps became available to them makes them different generations.

* KissingWarmUp: Kayla's dad enters her bedroom unexpectedly as she is kissing her hand while watching Instagram videos of Aiden and listening to Orinoco Flow by Music/Enya, causing her to panic and throw her phone across the room, breaking its screen. Because Kayla is such a PhoneaholicTeenager the audience is then reminded of the incident through the rest of the film by the constant view of the broken phone screen.

* KidsAreCruel: With a predominantly kid-based cast, most characters are apathetic towards Kayla at best if not actively cruel.
** Subverted, as the kids are mostly not actively cruel, and much of their behavior (when they go beyond apathy) sits ambiguously between cruel teasing and normal banter. And (with a couple of exceptions) Kayla is as anxious while interacting with people who are trying to be nice to her as she is when trying to get Kennedy to look up from her phone, making the point that what Kayla takes from these encounters is primarily a product of what's in her head.
