!This movie features examples of the following tropes:

* BigBadDuumvirate: Captain Vasco de Athayde and Lady Isabelle work together to set the movie's plot in motion; the former forces the main protagonist out of his vocation leading him to become a cartographer instead and conspires with the latter to steal a map so he can beat Pedro Alvarez Cabral to his expedition to India. This incidentally leads to Diogo being seduced into handing her over the map and him getting shipped off as an ''degradado'' which leads to him ending in Brazil.
