Did you think that there might be some subtext between the two? Then boy, is there a fan fiction for you. However, the relationship between Rick and Renault does not take up the meat of the story, and was purposefully written to be more subtextual. The real treat is to read the journey from Rick's Cafe to Brazzaville, which was clearly put together with a lot of research and love. If the beginning interactions between Rick and Sam don't sell you on this, nothing else will. Come for the plot with the intensely detailed route to Brazzaville, stay for the incredible character interaction.
