* NotSoAboveItAll: Discussed by the author. In the actual story Duncan states that he's more focused on winning than romance, and since Courtney was voted out first and in her second appearance gets voted off again quickly they never hook up. But had the author written out the story up to World Tour, the two would have started to slowly develop romantic feelings for each other, culminating in Duncan confessing his love to Courtney during the final challenge.

Dewicked trope.

The story is a ForWantOfANail fic set during the first season, beginning at the end of the first challenge, the moment when Ezekiel says his infamous sexist comment. However, instead of saying it out loud for everybody to hear, he does it while speaking with Harold, who quickly shows him how wrong his way of thinking is (though Harold doesn't dislike Zeke for this, and chalks it up to his reclusive upbringing). This has the effect of Courtney being eliminated instead, which causes the story to diverge from canon in many ways.

* HatedByAll: [[spoiler: Courtney]], even ''more so'' than in the canon timeline. In the episode where she returns alongside, [[spoiler: Eva]], everyone is quick to vote her off and they express zero delight when she returns. Even the few contestants she was on [somewhat] good terms in the canon timeline such as Bridgette, Duncan, and Gwen, never show any warm feelings to her at all. Whereas Chris and Chef made it clear they never cared for her to begin with.

** In the author's supplemental material on how the universe would continue later on, Heather would've taken back the role in Action after sharing it with Justin in the first half of Action. Alejandro, Scott, Mal, and Scarlett/Sugar would've remained as the Big Bads of World Tour, Revenge of the Island, All Stars, and Pakithew Island also.

Added DiffLines:

** Further supported by supplemental material by the author stating that if this universe continued in later seasons, Duncan would've ended up with Courtney and would be more willing to team up with Eva against threats like the odd eliminations on Action.

Added DiffLines:

* MoralityChain: Heavily implied to be the case with Courtney and Duncan's relationship: in the canon series, Duncan and Courtney eventually got into a relationship, and Duncan stayed an AntiHero for all of ''Island'''s run. Here, with Courtney being out early, Duncan has nothing holding him back, and he [[TookALevelInJerkass rapidly becomes a much bigger jerk]] than he ever was in canon, eventually [[spoiler:supplanting Heather as the fic's main villain.]]
