** HappilyArrangedMarriage: William and Arya.

* {{Hypocrite}}: During negotiations, Renly and the Tyrells say they want to prove their loyalty to William. However, they proceed to set terms, protest several perfectly reasonable answers from William and Stannis, they are unwilling to negotiate on the one term William is not going to budge (marrying Margaery instead of Arya) and have no trouble insulting those that have actually been loyal to William from day one - the Starks and Stannis.
** Cersei. When Ned claims that the Iron Throne is William's by right, she claims that Aegon the Conqueror became king [[AsskickingEqualsAuthority through force]] rather than by right; [[JerkassHasAPoint this is true]], except she later tells Tommen and Myrcella that the throne is rightfully Joffrey's, plus Joffrey is too wimpy to do any ass-kicking himself. She also claims that there is nothing wrong with committing incest, citing the Targaryens as an example, completing brushing off the fact that numerous generations of inbreeding ultimately produced Aerys the Mad, one of the worst kings in the history of Westeros (and whom Joffrey is, canonically, often compared to).

** Instead of Joffrey and Sansa, it is William and Arya that are betrothed, because Eddard paid attention to William when he spoke about his brother.
** Bran does not become a cripple after falling (or being pushed) from the tower, since Restoration magic exists.

** Robert names William as his heir, and Eddard makes a copy of the document, which he gives to William along with the King's signet ring on Robert's orders, which allows William to stake his claim and recruit the Legions.

** While never called by her name, [[spoiler:it is obvious Tysha is an apprentice at a Northern Temple of the Nine.]]

** Thanks to Danica's restoration magic, Shireen Baratheon's greyscale scars barely cover her cheek.

* TheAtoner: Ser Barristan after Eddard's death. So much that he decides to go support William, and do everything in his hand to pay back for not doing more to save Eddard.

** Jaime eventually acknowledges that his time in the Kingsguard blunted his fighting ability and sets out to fix it.
* BallisticDiscount: A variation. Daenerys purchases the Unsullied and a fleet of ships by offering two of her dragons as collateral, then promptly orders the Unsullied and the dragons to kill the slavers who controlled the Unsullied once the deal is complete.

* BigBrotherInstinct: William is very concerned with Myrcella and Tommen, and does his best to protect them from Joffrey. Later when he hears the rumor his siblings may be Jaime's and not Robert's, he tells his uncle that he loves Tommen and Myrcella regardless.
** When Cersei shouts at Tyrion for organizing Myrcella's arranged marriage to Doran Martell's son, Tyrion points out that they will not dare to harm Myrcella, because William would ''not'' like it at all.
** William is also this to the youngest Starks. When Bran fell from the tower, he had Danica (his personal healer) to heal Bran's back, and he stayed with the Starks while witing for news on Bran.
** Robb and Theon, twice: first, when they kill the wildlings that attacked Bran, and later when, after William declares himself King, they do not hesitate to rally behind him and help him get the Throne.
* BigDamnHeroes: Delphine saves Syrio Forel when Meryn Trant goes after him.

** The Sixth Legion's detachment arrives right on time to save the rest of the Legion from being overwhelmed by the Ironborn.
** [[spoiler:Jaime gets to save Garlan Tyrell, Delphine (from being attacked in the back) and then the day by ripping the Sigil Stone keeping the Oblivion Gate open.]]

* BlatantLies: when Myrcella and Tommen tell Cersei that Robert told them William was intended to become the King, Cersei says he was delirious, even though she does not like the idea of having to lie to her children so directly.

** Sheogorath tries to push Daenerys past the DespairEventHorizon to turn her crazy by showing her how AxCrazy several Targaryens were, including her father. Only her force of will and the intervention of [[spoiler:Valeria Targaryen]] saved Daenerys.

** Averted with Theon and Yara. Even though she thoroughly belittled her brother after he arrived from the North, Theon has no hard feelings for Yara, and she becomes worried for Theon after he decides to side with William, wishing she had not been so aggressive with him and trying to find a loophole to avoid having to fight him.

* ChekhovsGunman: The mysterious lady with dragon-like pupils that helped Daenerys in Chapter 22 [[spoiler:returns in chapter 26 to getther out of Sheogorath's Realm of Madness, presents herself as Daenerys' ancestor Valeria Targaryen - whom the Valyrian Freehold was named after - and turns out to be the Messenger of Akatosh.]]

* CivilWar: Instead of the War of the Five Kings, the fighting goes between Joffrey's and William's supporters, with the Ironborn as a sideshow.
** William has the support of the Legions, the North, the Riverlands, Stannis and part of the Stormlands. Several Western lords join his cause later.
** Joffrey only has the Crownlands and the Westerlands on his side.
** Balon Greyjoy decides to attack the North even though William was willing to accept his independence if he attacked the West.
** Renly almost throws in his weak claim to the throne with the support of the Tyrells, but William's early victories lead them to doubt who to choose. His later death pushes the Stormlands towards William and the Reach into Joffrey's side.
** Due to Lysa Arryn, the Vale has yet to pick a side, even though most noblemen are demanding to support William. Littlefinger, with Lysa's support, organizes a [[FalseFlagOperation false attack on Robert Arryn]] that would frame William, [[spoiler:but Mya Stone and the Thieves' Guild kill the assassin and frame the Mythic Dawn cult]].
** Dorne has not joined yet, as both sides are led by the sons of the man who Elia and her children were killed for, although they consider joining whoever gives them the best deal. Myrcella is sent to Dorne, supposedly to tie them to the Lannister cause, but Tyrion and her support William and tell so to Doran Martell, offering an alliance to William.

** Stannis seems to have a good relationship with William.
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: Tywin admits to Tyrion after Eddard Stark's murder and Jaime's capture that he should have supported William from the beginning so as to bring a sooner end to the war, but Cersei's actions are now forcing him to support Joffrey.
** Had Olenna Tyrell ordered Margaery to pursue William when the latter first visited Highgarden instead of Joffrey, William would have fallen for Margaery instead of Arya. Olenna even realized that she had targeted the wrong prince when she actually got a good look at William, but the royal family left Highgarden before she had a chance to adjust her plans.

* CrazyPrepared: On his deathbed, Robert names William as his heir, and to ensure that his decision is not disputed, Ned makes a copy of his will which also contains his signet ring, just in case the original will is destroyed. He also informs Myrcella and Tommen of his plans to ensure he has more-or-less unbiased witnesses. Sadly, Cersei disputes the claims anyway, and things go to hell and a hand-basket from there.
** Actually, he ''knew'' that a war would erupt regardless of his decision. He just wrote the will to ensure the Legions' loyalty to William - not that they weren't loyal to him already, but giving them the idea that they were fighting for the chosen heir rather than a possible usurper certainly doesn't damage their resolve.

** During the Battle of King's Landing, the Iron Fleet arrives and attempts to attack William's fleet. Will responds by [[spoiler: using the Storm Call Thu'um]], which annihilates almost the entire fleet!

** Had the Oblivion Gate not made an appearance, William's army would have crushed the combined Lannister-Tyrell army and taken the city, even though the former was outnumbered. And this is something Tywin acknowledges.

* ComedicSpanking: It's implied in Chapter 24 that Catelyn gave William a spanking for taking Arya to Fort Dawnguard without telling anyone.

* FakeUltimateMook: The Kingsguard is rapidly turning into this. No less than five have died already (Preston Greenfield, Boros Blount, Meryn Trant, Mandon Moore and Osmund Kettleblack). From Robert's Kingsguard, only Ser Arys Oakheart is still part, with Ser Barristan Selmy having joined the Blades and the Kingslayer a prisoner of William.
* FalseFlagOperation: Baelish runs one, with Lysa's support, on Robert Arryn (send an "assassin" to attack Robert Arryn and then have the Assassin "confess" to being sent by William as punishment for the Vale not joining his side, with a letter to "confirm" this) to secure the Vale's support for Joffrey. [[spoiler:[[HeroicBastard Mya Stone]] and the Thieves' Guild turn this on them, killing the "assassin" and changing the letter with one that pins the blame on the Mythic Dawn.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: William, who, even though he is younger than most soldiers in the Royal Army, will do his best to protect them, and does not take it well when people trivialize their sacrifice. When reminded of his victories, his first thought is for the people that died in them.

** Ramsay Snow to Jon Snow. Jon is heroic, selfless, grew up in his [[spoiler: possible]] father's castle while never meeting his mother, lived with his half-siblings whom he loves and fights to protect [[spoiler:and is Meridia's champion]]. Ramsay is cruel, sadistic, was taken care of by his mother and never met his father until he was much older, murdered his half-brother when he got the chance, [[spoiler:and is Molag Bal's champion]].

** Will is shaping up to be one to Aegon the Conqueror. Both use unorthodox tactics to conquer Westeros - Aegon with his dragons and William with his BadassArmy; Aegon had pale blonde (almost white) hair while Will has jet black hair; Aegon founded the Seven Kingdoms, and William seems destined to reshape said kingdoms into a Roman-style empire; Aegon [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon was put off]] by [[ActionGirl Visenya's]] warrior-like nature, whereas Will is AmazonChaser who scorns "proper" ladies (for bonus points, his fiance idolizes Visenya and seeks to emulate her); and both have some level of connection to dragons - Aegon was a dragon rider and his family associates heavily with them, while Will is [[spoiler:a Dragonborn]].

** With two of the War of the Five Kings' claimants (Robb Stark and Stannis Baratheon) openly supporting William and another (Renly) never claiming the crown before dying, the war becomes one between brothers, with the Ironborn as a sideshow.

** As the Blades were the ones to capture Jaime Lannister, Rickard Karstark's children are still alive.

** Instead of turning to the Red God, Stannis converts to the Nine Divines.

** After Viserys' betrayal (which causes Drogo's death), Daenerys names her white dragon Rhaella (after her mother) instead of Viseryon.

** Due to Gregor's raiding force being destroyed at Pennytree by a Legion ambush, The Riverlands are able to regroup and are lead by The Blackfish and take part in The Battle of King's Landing.
** [[spoiler: Farengar admitting to spying on Daenerys inspires Jorah to do the same. And due to everything she's been through, Daenerys is willing to forgive him, rather than banishing him.]]

* AChildShallLeadThem: William becomes the leader of the rebellion at age 15. At age 14, he was able to lead an army of Legions and Northmen against an army of Wildlings that outnumbered them 3-to-1, winning the Second Battle of Long Lake. He has been held as the leader of the Legions and the Blades since he was 9-10 years old, and both the Companions and the Dawnguard have him in very great esteem.
* AFatherToHisMen: William, who, even though he is younger than most soldiers in the Royal Army, will do his best to protect them, and does not take it well when people trivialize their sacrifice. When reminded of his victories, his first thought is for the people that died in them.

* AnIcePerson: Arya, after [[spoiler: learning how to use the Frost Breath Shout.]]

** In his deathbed, Robert bemoans that the one downside to Will becoming king is that he will need a new nickname, since "The Black King" doesn't sound as impressive as "The Black Prince".

* ThickerThanWater: [[AvertedTrope Averted]] with Theon, who sides with his friends over his family when his father and sister reject William's offer and constantly insult him.

** Sansa, believe it or not: after seeing the heads of all members of her household on stakes, she decides she is not going to take more crap from Joffrey. Sandor gains respect for her when she says she will never give into Joffrey's demands.
*** It is later revealed that, among other things, she has taken to decorate all of her clothes with things that remind her of home, such as direwolves, knowing that they needle Joffrey and Cersei.

* TooDumbToLive:
** As stated above, the Ironborn are absolute idiots at strategy.
** Tywin feels this way about Cersei's and Joffrey's plan to defend King's Landing with wildfire.

** Cersei is perennially unable to see the worth of the Blades as swords(wo)men, thinking that any victory of theirs is either a fluke, a lie (Delphine vs Jaime) or because their adversary was weak (Delphine vs Barristan).

Meanwhile, at the other side of the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen is about to be married off to Khal Drogo. She has discovered that dragons have their own language, capable of summoning strange forces, and eventually she discovers that she, took, can use this language, one of the signs that could mark her as Dovahkiin. She plans on how the use of this ability could help her to retake the Iron Throne for herself and her family.

But not everything is quite as sunny, for both Westeros and Essos are home as well to great evils that consider both William and Daenerys a danger to their plans, and will do anything in their power to get rid of them so as to be able to fulfill their objectives.

** Daenerys first loses her husband and unborn son to a bunch of [[EvilSorceror Evil Sorcerors]], and then her "children" (the dragons) are kidnapped by one of her handmaidens.

* DoWrongRight: Robb mentions that he, Jon, Theon and Will would sometimes go out with their horses and stay outside for hours. Eddard would always berate them, but he had to fight a smile while doing it.

* ZergRush: The Wildlings' "strategy" at Long Lake is to simply rush the Legion's lines, causing them to fall into an obvious trap that gets most of them killed.

* SurroundedByIdiots: Most of Tywin's bannermen and commanders are illiterate ass-kissers (the exception being Tytos Brax and the Westerlings, both of whom eventually switch sides), forcing him to plan out war strategies pretty much by himself to avoid total defeat. In one notable act of idiocy, one of his messengers nearly sends a copy of Tywin's plans to a Northern lord.
** Apparently, Balon Greyjoy's mentality when any of his underlings fails at their task, no matter how impossible the task is or that they fail because of factors out of their control.

* BodyguardBabes: Blades Grandmaster Delphine serves as the captain of William's guards.

** Serana finally gets to blow all her centuries-long pent-up fury with her father Harkon not just for the prophecy he is trying to fulfill, but also for [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil what he allowed Molag Bal to do to her]].

* BittersweetEnding: Chapter 26, which is technically the Season 2 finale. [[spoiler:Arya and Sansa have been rescued, the Oblivion Gate and the Iron Fleet have been destroyed, the Volkihar vampires have been stopped, and the Legions are still numerous and VERY powerful. On the other hand, Joffrey is still on the Iron Throne--though his alliance with the Tyrells is in danger of falling apart--and Alduin has returned.]]

* BlatantLies: when Myrcella and Tommen tell Cersei that Robert told them William was intended to become the King, Cersei says he was probably delirious, while she reflects on the fact that she is lying to her children.

* BodyguardBabes: Blade Grandmaster Delphine serves as the captain of William's guards.

* BullyingADragon: Serana decided to tell Meridia that she was no better than Molag Bal. Meridia proceeds to grab her by the throat and create an [[spoiler: illusory]] fire under her, telling her that the only reason she has lived so far is because she is defying Molag Bal.

* BigBadWannabe: The Ironborn. Yes, they are good sailors, but their "army" is mostly formed by raiders with little knowledge about war. They see themselves as capable of conquering the North and capturing King's Landing, but their two only victories (Deepwood Motte and Moat Cailin) are quickly undone, and they are soundly defeated elsewhere.

** [[spoiler: Farengar admitting to spying on Daenerys inspires Jorah to do the same. And due to everything she's been through, Dany in willing to forgive him, rather than banishing him.]]

** The While Walkers and Clan Volkhir are working together to invade the lands south of the Wall. Both are planning to betray each other.

* MacGuffin: [[spoiler:an Elder Scroll, sought by two factions at least (Mythic Dawn and the Volkihar vampire clan) and kept in Cloud Ruler Temple.]]

* OhCrap: the Dremora shit their pants when they find out William is using [[CoolSword Dragonbane]].

* WeAreStrugglingTogether: The end of Chapter 26 shows that [[spoiler:the Lannister-Tyrell alliance is in grave danger of falling apart since Joffrey wants the Tyrell forces to stay in King's Landing (or pursue William) while they want to stop the Legions from conquering a now wholly unprotected Reach... just as Will had planned]]. Tywin cathes on to this.

* WellIntentionedExtremist: Cersei is afraid that William will be reduced to a hard-drinking fatass if he inherits the crown, which is why she doesn't want him to be king. However, while it is true that William is more skilled at warring than at politics, he also possesses quite the level of political know-how thanks to Tyrion's coaching, and her point gets undermined by the fact that Robert's depression was caused by the death of the woman he loved, which led to having to settle with Cersei.
** Renly as well: he wishes for the war to end as quickly as possible, and has little desire to be King even though [[PoisonousFriend Loras]] is pushing for him to do so. However, he chooses to back the Tyrells, who indicate the price for their help is William's marriage to Margaery, even though it would completely undermine his strongest alliance.

** Serana finally gets to blow all her pent-up fury with her father Harkon not just for the prophecy he is trying to fulfill, but also for [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil what he allowed Molag Bal to do to her]].

* GoldDigger: William realises early on that Margaery Tyrell is one of these when she spends their entire first meeting trying to catch Joffrey's interest, hoping to become his Queen once he is crowned. When the Tyrells realize that William is likely to win the war and take the crown, she has no trouble switching interest from one brother to another - although she seems to be sincere when she says she truly is interested in William.
* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Daenerys has a severe breakdown at the end of Chapter 25 when she realizes that [[spoiler: she isn't a Dovahkiin.]]

** Cersei. * InTheBlood: While William is clearly a Baratheon and considers himself one, he also bears similarities to the Lannister side of his heritage. Olenna Tyrell calls attention to this, saying that while he's a Baratheon, he's also 'half-Lannister'.
** On the Baratheon side, he has an aptitude for war like [[LikeFatherLikeSon Robert]], is hard-working like [[{{Determinator}} Stan]][[AFatherToHisMen nis]] and he is far more charismatic than [[MagneticHero Renly]].
** On the Lannister side, he is a great swordsman like [[TheAce Jaime]], can be potentially ruthless like [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Cersei]], has learned how to [[ManipulativeBastard play the game]] from [[MagnificentBastard Tyrion]], and can see right through [[ObfuscatingDisability Pycelle's act]] like his grandfather Tywin, from whom he has also inherited his strategic ability.
** His great-grandmother Rhaella was a Targaryen, and it shows in some traits: his ability to draw people to him like young Aerys, Aemon's wisdom in books and Rhaegar's natural talent in (most) anything he does.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Renly's insistence that William switch his [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage arranged marriage to Arya]] to [[GoldDigger Margaery Tyrell]] might seem inconsiderate and disrespectful to the Starks, especially when he waves off the fact that they dearly love each other. However he does bring up the point that when William wins the crown, he will also win the massive debts that it has acquired, debts that the Tyrells are willing to pay off if William takes Margaery as his queen.
** William can't deny, despite not wanting to marry Margaery, that she would be an excellent queen, as she has been taught to be a highly capable politician and capable player in the game from an early age.

** Tywin may not completely disapprove of Arya for his grandson, but he does make a good point that William's unwillingness to change the marriage vows to Margaery cost him a hundred thousand men that could have brought him victory in the war much sooner and at the cost of far less lives.

** Cersei cutting the royal family's visit to Highgarden short ultimately derails the Tyrells' plans in the long run - and the consequences inspire Robert to send William to foster in the North..

** The Blades swear allegiance to William because of a prophecy Grandmaster Jauffre made about Dragonbane's blood, which is fulfilled when William cuts his hand on it.

* AlwaysSecondBest: Joffrey hates William because William is better than him. Cersei realizes this will lead to trouble, and knows conflict will ensue at one point or another - which does with the beginning of the civil war.
* AmazonChaser: [[ZigZaggedTrope Zig-zagged]] with William. He detests "proper ladies" because, in his eyes, they all look and act the same, and thus bore him. He typically associates himself with [[ActionGirl Action Girls]], even falling in love with one. However, this doesn't stop him from admitting that Margaery Tyrell would make an excellent queen. He also gets along well with Catelyn Stark, whom, admittedly, is less of a "proper lady" and more of a TeamMom and Northern lady.

* ArmorPiercingSlap: Arya gives one to Joffrey when he not-so-subtly threatens to rape her. She does not go for a MegatonPunch because she knows the slap will be more embarrassing for Joffrey.

* BoltOfDivineRetribution: [[spoiler:More like '''Storm''' of Divine Retribution: William's Storm Call Shout completely annihilates the Iron Fleet, while leaving the Lyseni sellsails they were about to engage in combat completely untouched. Victarion Greyjoy is even convinced that it's an act of the Storm God, come to destroy the Drowned God's followers.]]

* EntitledBastard: Joffrey, who believes that just being the first son, and later king should automatically mean that everyone must obey him. This is especially apparent in regards to the Legions, with Joffrey calling them "his" Legions, and throwing a temper tantrum when they side with William.

** In a flashback Theon has of when he met William, the latter, trying to convince him to join a sparring with Robb, Jon and him, said he hated to order people to do things they didn't want to do. When Theon joined them, William was glad to see he had changed his mind... and pointed out that he had not ordered Theon to do anything. This was the beginning of their friendship.

** Long Lake is [[UsefulNotes/PunicWars the battle of Cannae]], with a dash of the opening fight scene from ''{{Film/Gladiator}}''.
