[[spoiler: Which means that when Kaylie enters the Cinderite City gym and sees Vulcan snacking on anti-herbs and divine beverages, she is essentially seeing him get drunk and high.]]

* GRatedDrug: "Anti-herbs," "mini-pipes," "deceptisugar," and "the divine beverages." [[EverybodyMustGetStoned Guess]] [[SmokingIsNotCool what]] [[DrugsAreBad they]] [[WineIsClassy represent.]]

** It's stated at the beginning of the chapter "A Mega Encounter" that Phoebus loves to play, doesn't train much except for battles, and is [[NiceGuy generally very lighthearted and friendly.]] So when he restricts his own lifestyle to [[TrainingFromHell doing nothing but training and eating all day long,]] and [[TookALevelInJerkass is very ornery and rude to even his Trainer,]] the others know something is ''very'' wrong. It's very telling when he turns down an episode of his favorite TV show, ''Funniest Pokemon In Feluv.'' As it turns out, Phoebus will do ''anything'' to Mega Evolve right away...
*** In the chapter "Not Really a Marvel," the normally happy Clopin blows up outright at Quasimodo, claiming that they were never friends. This is the first time he has ever gotten this angry, and it greatly concerns Quasi.
*** In that same episode, he's so sad that he talks ''unaccented.'' This sets off MAJOR alarm bells in Quasimodo's head that something is not right.

* SmokingIsNotCool: The main moral of "Straight Outta Cinderite." Of course, this being a K+ fanfic, the word "cigarettes" is never mentioned, [[UnusualEuphemism instead being referred to as "mini-pipes."]]

* TrainingFromHell: Phoebus, due to his impatience to Mega Evolve, forces this upon ''himself'' in "A Mega Encounter." It eventually gets so vigorous that he does nothing all day except eat and train, [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness a behavior which Kaylie notes is extremely out of character for Phoebus, who normally only trains when it is necessary.]]

** It's stated at the beginning of the chapter "A Mega Encounter" that Phoebus loves to play, doesn't train much except for battles, and is generally very lighthearted and friendly. ** In "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?", due to Quasimodo not knowing many French words, he (hilariously) mispronounces many of them, leading both Clopin and Couafarak to correct him. Among the words that Quasi ''does'' know how to pronounce? Any one ending with the "-in" combo.

* MeaningfulEcho: Perhaps the biggest in the entire series goes to "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?" At the beginning of the chapter, Clopin mentions that he knows all the words to the Kalosian national anthem. He then proceeds to dance around and happily sing "La Marseillaise" before being stopped by Kaylie. [[spoiler: And at the ''end'' of the chapter? Clopin and Couafarak have lost all hope that they will ever bring a Kalosian school to Feluv after their failure to do so. However, their loyal followers haven't forgotten what Clopin and Couafarak taught them, and to raise their spirits... [[NationalAnthem guess what song they sing?]]]]

** Made ''much'' more dramatic in the chapter "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?" when, at the end, [[spoiler: after Clopin and Couafarak fail to create the first French school in the Feluv region,]] it's made clear that their followers still haven't forgotten what they were taught, and sing [[spoiler: "La Marseillaise"]] to raise their spirits and inspire them to keep fighting.

** In the chapter "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?", Clopin and Couafarak unfortunately fail to set up the first Kalosian school in Feluv, because of the region's obsession with [=PokeLatin=]. Clopin, being ThePollyanna, tries to keep things on the bright side, but [[spoiler: eventually, [[DespairEventHorizon even he gives up hope,]] and all he can do is stare at the ground and wallow over his failure.]]

* {{Portmanteau}}: The name Couafarak is a combination of Furfrou's French name, ''Couafarel,'' and the character Coufeyrak from ''Theatre/LesMiserables'' (which just so happens to be Patrick's favorite musical).

* SadClown: Clopin is usually extremely upbeat, but if he is ever broken, it's utterly depressing.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Is it "Couafarak" or "Couafeyrak"? The former seems to be much more popular, but there are those who will spell it as the latter.

** As seen in "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?", he also knows French. When he first runs into Couafarak again in Lumiose City, he greets the Furfrou in French, and an entire French conversation starts. Of course, French here [[HoldYourHippogriffs is referred to as "Kalosian."]]
** It's also worth mentioning Couafarak himself. Being from Kalos, he is able to speak fluent Kalosian with Clopin without the need for a dictionary.

* TheEeyore: Couafarac can sometimes be this, especially in the much more saddening moments of "Do You Hear the Furfrou Sing?" In that episode, he says both "C'est la fin des haricots" and "Les carrotes sont cuites." Both of these are French food idioms, and the former figuratively means "It's the end of the world" while the latter figuratively means "That's it; we failed and there's nothing else we can do about it." The latter is said [[spoiler: after Rancorpujin cuts all funds to the Kalosian school in Feluv, meaning Couafarac and Clopin can't set it up anymore.]]

* {{Portmanteau}}: The name Couafeyrak is a combination of Furfrou's French name, ''Couafarel,'' and the character Coufeyrak from ''Theatre/LesMiserables'' (which just so happens to be Patrick's favorite musical).

* PoirotSpeak: Couafeyrak, given that he lives in Kalos, is very well known to pepper his speech with Kalosian words and phrases. However, it is ''not'' GratuitousFrench, because Couafeyrak actually speaks Kalosian very well, well enough to have full-on conversations with Clopin in Kalosian without the need for a dictionary.

* PlotMandatedFriendshipFailure: Subverted. Clopin ''does'' act coldly towards Tesla about his arrogance and states that no one likes him anymore. [[ILied He was forced to lie to himself,]] because despite how arrogant Tesla may have been, Clopin always wanted to be his friend. Unfortunately, Tesla takes it seriously and breaks into a HeroicBSOD

** [[ShoutOut You can't always get want you want,]] [[Music/RollingStones but sometimes, you get what you need.]] In this case, a message to continue fighting. (Chapter 13)
