* DespairEventHorizon: A prominent theme, although only [[spoiler: [[BrokenBird Vriska]]]], [[spoiler: [[NotSoStoic Kanaya]]]] and [[spoiler: [[VillainProtagonist Karkat]]]] cross it. In [[spoiler: Karkat]]'s case, [[spoiler:he]] also crosses the MoralEventHorizon.

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: Nepeta]], for [[spoiler: Karkat]]. If it was worth it, however, [[spoiler: [[ByronicHero is up to debate]]]].
* HowDoIShotWeb: Karkat, at first. He soon gets the hang of it, though.

* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: In the fight between [[spoiler: Karkat]] and [[spoiler: Terezi]], the latter clearly has the upper hand due to [[spoiler: her clairvoyancy]]. Luckily, [[spoiler: Karkat can shield himself]].

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Everyone acts more serious than they are in the webcomic: Karkat's only curses are [[GoshDangItToHeck not so hard]], Nepeta's cuteness is DownPlayed, Vriska's a little less bitchy, but Terezi is written as ''extremely'' dishonest and stubborn. It's subverted and justified. This is [[CrapSackWorld Alternia]] and [[BreakTheCutie Madoka Magica]] combined.
** There is only one situation where Karkat swears, upon getting hit by [[spoiler: Witch!Kanaya]], and even then it's a GoshDangItToHeck.
* PimpedOutDress: Kanaya.
** Subverted with Nepeta, who is described as having a hunting coat instead, contradicting a lot of stereotypes.
*** Karkat is a possible candidate. His Puer Magi form has the feather arrangement, his Soul Gem in the middle of the feathers, and pieces of fabric tied to his neck and both wrists.

** WhatCouldHaveBeen: The previous title was '[[ProtagonistTitle Ka]][[ProtagonistJourneyToVillain rk]][[AntagonistTitle at]], [[OurLichesAreDifferent Puer Magi]]'.
*** The original plan of the author was to let loose a bit more about her and Karkat's past, Dave would be mentioned as her new matespirit. However, this was abandoned due to this being set in an Alternate Universe where Dave doesn't even exist (yet).
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: The title.

*** Taken to a higher level when Nepeta says: 'I'm done with you. DONE.' to [[spoiler: Karkat]]. Heidi's mother in ''So B. It'' used to say 'Done.' when she was done with a (usually easy) task, but also used it out of frustration (ex. tying her shoelaces, she stopped doing that very soon). Nepeta [[CatNinja who's certainly]] '''[[AdaptationalBadass not]]''' [[AdaptationalIntelligence mentally disabled]] is just as done with [[spoiler: Karkat]] as the mother of Heidi with those tasks.

Admit it, the plot is Turnabout Corner if it was on Alternia and enacted by Puer Magi.
