** In the prequel book ''On the Origin of [=PCs=], the party epically fails in its very first round of combat as a unified party, against a group of kobolds. We see the characters' thoughts as they prepare actions: [[ASimplePlan Haley prepares an action to attack the first creature that charges, Elan prepares an action to flank attack the first wounded creature, and Vaarsuvius prepares an action to Lightning Bolt the first 4 creatures that line up toward hir]]. Belkar starts by charging a kobold (he misses his attack). Haley attacks him (as he was the first to charge) and hits; Elan flanks him and attacks (as Belkar was the first to be wounded); and V promptly nukes all 3 and the kobold with a Lightning Bolt (as they were lined up).
