** Creator/DavidMcCallum died in September 2023, around two months before the twenty-first season of ''Series/{{NCIS}}'' began filming and four months after his final appearance (as well as his [[SwanSong final performance]]).as Ducky. * ''The Royal Family'': Creator/ReddFoxx died during production, in which he co-starred with Della Reese. The show continued production for a few episodes with actress Jackée brought in to play opposite Reese, but the show sank so quickly after Foxx's death most of those episodes never aired.

** Creator/AndyWhitfield, who played the title character, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2010. This caused production to halt while Andy went through treatment. During this time, Creator/{{Starz}} produced a prequel series ''Gods of the Arena''. Andy gave his blessing for the network to recast his character so the series could resume. He was declared cancer-free two months after ''Gods of the Arena'' aired, but succumbed to the disease in September 2011; the disease recurred in September 2010, only three months after initially being deemed cancer-free.

* ''Series/RockAndChips'': The ''Series/OnlyFoolsAndHorses'' {{prequel}} would presumably have continued the story arc up to the [[DoomedByCanon death of Joan Trotter]] had writer John Sullivan not succumbed to Author Existence Failure himself.

** Franchise/NCIS sadly have a history of this:
* After Creator/MiguelFerrer died of throat cancer, his character Owen Granger in ''Series/NCISLosAngeles'' was written off as taking care of some "unfinished business" but eventually became TheCharacterDiedWithHim.
** Ralph Waite, who recurred as Jackson Gibbs (Gibbs's father) in flagship series Series/NCIS, died in February 2014, resulting Jackson also dying and the eleventh season finale serving as a farewell episode to him.

** Paula Kelly, Charlie Robinson and Creator/MarkiePost all since passed away [[note]] Kelly passed away in February 2020 while Post and Robinson died in 2021. * ''Rock and Chips'': The ''Series/OnlyFoolsAndHorses'' {{prequel}} would presumably have continued the story arc up to the [[DoomedByCanon death of Joan Trotter]] had writer John Sullivan not succumbed to Author Existence Failure himself.

* ''Mittens and Pants'' suffered from this when Samantha Weinstein, the voice of Mrs. [=McRooster=], passed away from cancer during the production of season 2. According to a post on the social media account of the show, she was supposed to reprise her role in future episodes.

* ''Series/AndJustLikeThat'': Creator/WillieGarson died on September 21, 2021 from pancreatic cancer while he'd been filming scenes for the ''Series/SexAndTheCity'' revival. The fourth episode writes his character, Stanford Blatch, out of the series by having him divorce his husband Anthony and move to Japan to manage a [=TikTok=] star.

* ''Series/That70sShow'': Creator/TanyaRoberts expressed interest in reprising her role as Midge Pinciotti in any potential spinoffs. Sadly, she passed away on January 4, 2021, nine months before it was announced that Netflix had greenlit ''Series/That90sShow'', which ultimately premiered on January 19, 2023.

* ''Series/TwinPeaks'': The two-and-a-half-decades between Twin Peaks' second and third seasons meant an unfortunate amount of cast members who couldn't come back for the miniseries.
** Music/DavidBowie was too ill to reprise his role from the film ''Film/TwinPeaksFireWalkWithMe'', but did give his blessing for footage of him to be used for his character of Phillip Jeffries. New scenes with his character depict him as a sentient tea kettle, having ascended mortal form.
** Catherine E. Coulson was dying of cancer, but still came back as the famous Log Lady, with the scripts written to accommodate her needs. She died after filming, and the episode with her final appearance is dedicated to Coulson.
** Frank Silva's death meant he was unable to come back as the BigBad of the series, BOB. They were able to work around this, as the original series ended with BOB possessing Dale Cooper, so they were able to have Creator/KyleMaclachlan play him for most scenes. Other than that, Frank Silva's face is sometimes superimposed on a floating orb of darkness.
** Jack Nance was a frequent collaborator with co-creator Creator/DavidLynch, but died shortly after the original series' ending. His character of Pete Martell appears in the third season via archive footage, and a body double for a single new shot with him. The episode with these strategies employed was dedicated to Nance.

* Less than a week after the 2016 Presidential election, Gwen Ifill, the moderator for ''Washington Week'', died of endometrial cancer. For months afterwards, the show did not have a permanent host as PBS searched for a replacement.
* ''Series/WillAndGrace'':
** Creator/GregoryHines' death from liver cancer prevented any further appearances by his character Ben Doucette, one of the partners at the law firm Will worked at. It's been speculated that Will and Vince's son (before the revival retconned him out) was named "Ben" to honor the character and Hines.
** The year before the revival started, Creator/DebbieReynolds (who played Grace's mother) passed away from a stroke. Grace's mother was later established as [[TheCharacterDiedWithHim having passed away herself]].
* Music/BizMarkie died on July 16, 2021, just two months before the announcement of a reboot of ''Series/YoGabbaGabba'', on which he had a recurring segment called "Biz's Beat of the Day". If the reboot is ever actually made, his segment would have to be retooled into something similar or left out entirely.

* Creator/CameronBoyce died after the third season of Series / Bunk'd
was completed from a seizure. Mrs. Kilping's actor also died after the 4th season.
* the dog who played Cosmo died by complications from surgery while the 5th and final season of Series/FullerHouse was being film.
