A cartoonist in his youth, Dooley began seeking work as an actor after graduating from West Virginia University, also working at the time as a clown. He was a cast member in Creator/TheSecondCity around the same time as Creator/AlanAlda and Creator/AlanArkin.

Dooley has been married twice, once to Donna Lee Wasser and from 1984 to his current wife Winnie Holzmann, the creator of ''Series/MySoCalledLife''. Savannah Dooley, his daughter with Holzmann, is the creator of the TV series ''Literature/{{Huge}}''.
