She was born in Madison, Wisconsin, daughter of state legislator Edwin Rowlands. She went to college at the University of Wisconsin before leaving for New York and an acting career in 1950. She was nominated for Best Actress for her husband's acclaimed 1974 film ''A Woman Under the Influence'', where she plays a housewife slowly descending into madness. She got another Oscar nomination for Cassavetes' 1980 film ''Gloria'', in which she plays a gangster's moll who goes on the run.
