In May 2023, similar to what was done at Max, the service (and Hulu) began a massive purge of much of its lower-performing original content (including most library content), removing many movies and shows from legal public availability. In the same month, it was announced the service in the US would be merged with Hulu's content, though Hulu would continue to exist as a standalone service as well. That same year, Disney+ announced that it would gradually add a number of restored WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts in the remaining months of 2023 as part of a restoration project which coincides with the company-wide [=Disney100=] celebration as well as a WesternAnimation/Cinderella [=4K=] restorationThe same restoration used on [=4K=] Ultra HD prints of the film, also to coincide with [=Disney100=] on August 27 of that year, as part of World Princess Day. While there is a much greater degree of creative freedom than what's normally allowed on network TV, Disney initially made it a point that R-rated and TV-MA franchises would not be featured on the service in the United States. Instead, anything above PG-13 and lower level TV-14 (and, in some cases, even PG-13 and TV-14 content) that happens to pertain to Disney would be offloaded to Creator/Hulu (a service that they have a majority stake in, and will fully own in 2024) to help preserve the service's image of being family-friendly.Until mid-2021, most new non-R-rated 20th Century content could not have their pay-one windows on either service in the US, due to contracts made pre-acquisition with Creator/HBO that were set to run through mid-2022. Some movies from that label were made available on international versions of Disney+, though. In 2021, a deal between Disney and HBO was announced that would allow half of 20th Century and Creator/SearchlightPictures' slate, beginning with WesternAnimation/RonsGoneWrong, to be made available simultaneously on Max and either Disney+ or Hulu, in exchange for extending HBO's license to the end of 2022 and shrinking the amount of time HBO had to wait to premiere each film. Disney later relaxed those rules for a few titles, mainly to keep all of their Marvel titles on one platform. In March 2022, the service added the MCU's Defenders sub-franchise of TV series formerly distributed by Netflix (consisting of Series/2015, Series/2015, Series/2016, Series/2017, Series/2017, and Series/2017—all rated TV-MA). The service also rolled out updated parental controls, with mature content disabled by default. On July 22, 2022, Film/2016, Film/Logan, and Film/Deadpool2 were the first R-rated movies to stream on the service in the US, while on July 23rd, Marvel Zombies was announced as being the first Disney+ Original to carry a TV-MA rating.Originally, a non-Marvel movie, Film/KissOfTheDragon, was going to become the first R-rated film to stream on Disney+ in the US in April 2022, but that decision was later reversed Prior to those, Disney found itself on the losing end of fights with Creator/PeterJackson and Apple Corps to tone down the language of Series/TheBeatlesGetBack (particularly the "f-bombs", which would normally merit an R or TV-MA rating), which became the first Disney+ program to get ContentWarnings for language.

** If you think Singapore got it bad in the waiting game, the rest of South-East Asia had it worse, with over a four month gap between Singapore and the next Asian country. Couple with the fact that only Singapore will be receiving the real Disney+ will the rest of Asia will be receiving the inferior Disney+ Hotstar... (The Philippines only got nearly lucky as their Disney+ is the same as the [=MENA=] version.) And then, there's Far East Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and (if that happens) the former Soviet countries (outside of Russia)...

Minor fix

* The majority of classic shorts (apart from those already on Disney+) are still not available there with many of them having last been seen on home media, such as both entries of the WesternAnimation/AdventuresInMusicDuology.

And with Runaways completely gone from Disney+ this doesn't look notable anymore

** In countries without Hulu, Series/Runaways2017 was available on launch, even if with seasons 2 and 3 entering only a few months later. The show with which it crosses over in one of the last episodes, Series/CloakAndDagger2018, had to wait longer (2021 in Australia and Canada, 2022 in Latin America and Brazil).

Homecoming joined the US branch a few months ago, and Far From Home will next month.

** Solo movies featuring the Hulk and Spider-Man respectively that are canon to the Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse are still under legal scrutiny with other studios as of 2022, meaning those wanting to watch the entirety of the MCU's Infinity Saga will need to view Universal's Film/TheIncredibleHulk2008 (except in Japan and most of Europe), and Sony's Film/SpiderManHomecoming (except in the UK, Canada, and Latin America), Far From Home and No Way Home on other platforms. Film/IronMan1 was unavailable in Japan and Spain until 2023 when Disney added the film to those regions.
*** During 2023, Disney gradually added The Incredible Hulk to the Canadian version of the service after Universal's rights to the film in the US and selected regions were set to expire that year before coming to the US version of the service on June 16th of that same year.

** MCU films that were distributed by Sony or Universal Pictures, such as the solo Spider-Man films for the former and Film/2008 for the latter, for awhile did not appear at all on the service since the full rights to those films are with said studios. However, Disney has packaged those films on MCU DVD/Blu-Ray box sets under license from both studios. A 2021 deal between Disney and Sony has allowed Spider-Man films both before and after Spider-Man joining the MCU to become available on the service after their initial run on Creator/Starz (for pre-2022 films) or Creator/Netflix concludes. In 2022 Spider-Man: Homecoming was added in a few markets, along with many other Spider-Man movies... including Film/Venom2018, which is about one of his enemies. In 2023, the Sam Raimi Film/SpiderManTrilogy as well as Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan was added to the service in the U.S. because of the deal as well as Homecoming and Venom.
