Then, on December 15th, 2016, it happened- Amazon Studio went global, true to the words of the crew of ''The Grand Tour''. Overnight, suddenly over 200 countries have access to a library of Amazon original content, including ''The Grand Tour'' and ''Creative Galaxy''. However, global coverage is spotty at this time, with only a small sampling of shows and movies available compared to the other countries which got access earlier. However, the outlook is bright and many are expecting more content to become available in time. Amazon is even giving these countries a lower Prime subscription cost to compensate for the lack of content. Global subscribers also need to use [[http://www.primevideo.com a different URL]] to access the content as opposed to those in countries where the service was launched earlier. Still, it is a good sign.

It should be worth noting that like Hulu and Netflix (before Netflix went worldwide in January 2016), [[NoExportForYou Amazon's streaming service is only available in the UK, the US, Germany, Austria, India and Japan]]. Needless to say, many folks from outside these regions are not pleased, especially when it comes to being blocked out of award winners like ''Creative Galaxy'' and ''Transparent''. Rumor has it that they're quietly strengthening their architecture and are in preparation for a 2017 worldwide rollout, in a bid to take on frenemy Netflix (a rumor that spread when the cast of ''The Grand Tour'' announced on social media that the series will be available for viewing in over 200 countries come December 2016. This was followed shortly by an announcement that Amazon is preparing to launch several Asia-Pacific localized versions of their webstore in Asia-Pacific countries by early 2017. Many speculators were quick to put two and two together). However at this point it remains pure speculation on whether they'd really do it.

Online retailer Amazon.com announced in 2010 that it would start providing original television shows and movies. Thus '''Amazon Studios''' was born, with content distributed through Amazon Prime.

Unusually, for a content provider, Amazon uses a crowdsourcing approval process to determine what gets produced. Scripts are submitted online and are reviewed by staff and site users before some are then greenlit for pilot production. The pilots are then provided for free on Amazon Prime, where viewers get to vote on which ones they'd like to see get ordered to series.

Critical and popular response towards Amazon's shows has been mixed (the most common complaint is that plots often don't move forward), despite the fact that they are produced based on a fan vote. There have been a few standouts, though. ''Series/{{Transparent}}'' made history when it became the first show from an online streaming service to win the Golden Globe for Best Series and Jeffery Tambor won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Tambor would go on to win an Emmy for his performance as well.

Amazon's kids' shows seem to be having the most success, with Annedroids, Creative Galaxy, Gortimer Gibbon and Tumble Leaf all getting second runs.
