** At least in terms of his Disney roles, where he tends to play older, slimy, petty villains. This trend continues with his casting in ''WesternAnimation/{{Zootopia}}'' as [[WickedWeasel Duke Weaselton]]. [[PlayingAgainstType Averted]] in ''WesternAnimation/{{Moana}}'', where he voices the animal sidekick. Then again, this seems to be a new type of pigeonhole, as he went on to voice animal sidekicks in ''WesternAnimation/RayaAndTheLastDragon'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Encanto}}''.

* DoingItForTheArt: While he hasn't been in any particularly bad films, he's definitely had less impressive roles; he played a non-anthropomorphic chicken in ''WesternAnimation/{{Moana}}'' and a random redneck in ''Film/Deadpool2''. It would have been easy to phone those in, but he says his policy is to give every role his all, and it shows.
** In ''Film/Deadpool2'' he had about a minute of screentime, a grand total of six lines, and was barely recognizable, but he still managed to be memorable simply because he's clearly paying close attention to his friend's bizarre rant about toilet paper.
** The director of ''WesternAnimation/{{Encanto}}'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ0vPNTNgYU&t=776s revealed]] that Tudyk schooled the creators on their inaccurate toucan noises, saying their existing noises were actually from some species of parrot, did a lot of research on actual toucan noises, and spent hours in the recording booth testing toucan noises and "responding" to English-language dialogue in toucan.

* PlayingWithCharacterType: He's introduced in ''Series/{{Dollhouse}}'' as a very similar character to the one he became famous for in Joss Whedon's earlier ''Series/{{Firefly}}'' as Wash, and appears to be a harmless dolt. Then it turns out he's actually the rogue active "Alpha", a SerialKiller with a sci-fi version of multiple personality disorder. Later on he started playing similar BitchInSheepsClothing characters until that became a typecasting in itself, and was subverted the other way around in ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'' where he's set up to be the BigBad, but isn't.
