* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: Endemic within the setting, and the the core reason the virus poses a threat to a group as powerful as the Avengers. Rather than turning when bitten, the survivors are simply liable to snap and start eating people at any moment. A particularly egregious version is [[spoiler: when She-Hulk is placed in charge of a refugee camp by the Avengers, only to become infected and turn on the people under her protection.]]

** In the third issue of 'Wolverine,'[[spoiler:Frank and Logan return to find that the Baxter Building has been overrun by the infected, and half the science team has been killed or turned.]]

** [[spoiler:Kingpin]]in ''Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher.''

* {{Deconstruction}}: This could be read as a deconstruction on ''ComicBook/MarvelZombies''. In the MZ titles, the titular zombies don’t actually [[OurZombiesAreDifferent act like like zombies]], but rather intelligent cannibals that happen to be undead (who end up conquering their world). This story kinda runs with that idea, showing a mutating HatePlague that simply makes the infected savage maniacs that are easily dealt with. It also demonstrates a better understanding of the heroes; MZ!Mr. Fantastic loses his mind after the death of his children, whereas the Reed of ''this'' world keeps his sanity and helps establish a safe-zone with the surviving heroes.

* YouSaidYouWouldLetThemGo: Inverted, Frank made a deal with Zero (Zombie Spider-Man) to leave the uninfected alone if he took out Fisk and rescued MJ. After Zero and MJ and reunited, [[spoiler:Frank shoots Zero in the head.]]

* CreepySouvenir: Many of the infected superhumans fashion adornments out of the bones of their victims. Special mention goes to Hulk, who wears Wolverine's severed hand as a necklace, Daredevil, who builds a rosary out of the fingerbones of some nuns, and [[spoiler:Hercules, who wears the heads of several of the Morlocks on his belt when leading his army against the survivng avengers.]]
* CriticalResearchFailure: In a couple of different crowd scenes, Goran Parlov accidentally draws Marvel characters from the wrong universe. Hazmat, from ''AvengersAcademy'', is replaced by Hazmat from EA's video game ''Marvel Nemesis'', and a scene with Spider-Girl--presumably meant to be Anya Corazon--is instead "Mayday" Parker from the MC-2 universe.

* IAmNotLeftHanded: After {{[ComicBook/Spider-man}} becomes PatientZero for the outbreak, the survivors find out [[TheBeserker ''exactly'' how much of his strength he'd been holding back all those years.]]

* OneManArmy: Just like his mainstream counterpart, Frank has been fighting hordes of mutant cannibals, and especially from the superhuman types, by himself after civilization fell.

* AndIMustScream: Right as he's infected, Iron Man's suit malfunctions, trapping him in a stationary pose for the rest of his life. And yes, the last time we see him alive, he is screaming.

** MutualKill:[[spoiler:Magneto and Electro inadvertently cause a massive EMP while fighting, vaporizing each other [[FromBadToWorse and wiping out an already-overtaxed New Yorks electrical grid.]]]]

** During 'Wolverine,' [[spoiler:The Thing]] never moves or speaks during the scenes in Reed's Lab, spending them staring intensely at Spider-Man. [[spoiler:He's turned, and the two of them are coordinating an escape through body language.]]

** Hawkeye and Bullseye team up against a horde including Bushwacker,Red Ghost, and Northstar.

* DeathFromAbove: The plot of the first issue of ''Wolverine'' consists of Logan tracking a series of cannibalistic killings carried out by a flier. [[spoiler: It turns out to be The Angel, who succumbed to the plague en route to Manhattan. This serves as confirmation that the virus has gone global.]]

* EliteZombie: [[PlayedWith Played with.]] At the start of the outbreak, infected superhumans served this role to the hordes at large, which were otherwise largely composed of infected unpowered citizenry. By the time the first Miniseries kicks off, though, the infected's proclivity for infighting means that [[BossesButNoMooks superhuman infected are pretty much all that are left.]]
