*VietnamVet: Like any action hero from the 1980s worth his salt, Jon did a stint in Vietnam - however it was a non-combat posting andJon was in fact known as something of a LovableCoward to his comrades.

Added DiffLines:

* AntiHero: Jon Sable is somewhere between [[PragmaticHero pragmatic]] and [[UnscrupulousHero unscrupulous]] variety. He ''does'' [[WeHelpTheHelpless help those who can't afford to pay him]]... but he claims it's mostly because he can afford to, with his writing career (although that's ''probably'' note the whole truth). He's also doesn't hestitate to use lethal force in his job[[note]]though it bothers him more and more as the series goes on[[/note]] and if you happened to get on his bad side may God have mercy on you - because Jon [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge definitely won't]].

Added DiffLines:

*BruiserWithASoftCenter: Much as he strives to keep it hidden, it's fairly obvious that Sable is a caring, compassionate man who'd literally walk through fire for those close to him.

Added DiffLines:

* ItGetsEasier: Played with - Sable does mention he's lost track of how many men he killed, he doesn't even have nightmares about it anymore... and that fact ''freaks him out''.

* CoolGuns:
** Sable uses a customized C96 Mauser: specifically, the Chinese Shanxi Type 17 (firing .45 ACP rounds) as a base, with the box-magazine loading mechanism of the 'Schnellfeuer' model instead of the stripper clip-loaded internal magazine. This is his primary firearm for much of the comic.
** Sable's favourite weapon is a broomhandle Mauser chambered for .45 ACP. He also carried a large bore, multipurpose stainless steel revolver, that had a resemblance to an antique pepperbox revolver. The weapon could fire underwater, fire rifle shot, arrow/bolt type projectiles and a multitude of other loads, such as tear gas, explosive, and tranquilizer. This was an actual weapon designed for Navy [=SEALs=] that never went beyond prototype.

Added DiffLines:

* SummationGathering: Jon does this at the end of "The Hard Way" (the only traditional murder mystery in the series) in #45; gathering all the suspects into the lounge of the yacht where the murder occurred, and exposing the murderer and explaining how the LockedRoomMystery was committed. Jon has a weakness for indulging in classic genre 'bits'.

It's one of those designed so that [[LightAndMirrorsPuzzle a beam of sunlight shining through a hole in the wall will reveal the lock]] - but it only works on one day of the year that's months away. Sable points out that the ancient builders hadn't anticipated modern electricity and duplicates the effect with his flashlight.
