''Detective Comics'' debuted in 1937 and is the longest continually published comic book in the United States.[[note]]''ComicBook/ActionComics'' had higher issue numbers because it went weekly for a while, but started a few months later.[[/note]] It is published by Creator/DCComics (and is the origin of "DC" in the company's name), and is best known for telling the adventures of Franchise/{{Batman}}, who debuted in issue #27 with the story "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate".

The comic started out as an anthology comic with each issue containing several unrelated adventures. The first issue introduced a mix of two-fisted sleuths with names like "Slam" Bradley and "Speed" Saunders as well as more exotic detectives like "Cosmo, the Phantom of Disguise". Slam Bradley, one of the title's early stars, was created (from an initial character outline by the editor, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson) by Creator/JerrySiegelAndJoeShuster, not yet famous as the creators of Franchise/{{Superman}}. He still shows up in DC Comics from time to time, usually when a writer wants to make a point about how comics have changed over the years.

* NegativeContinuity: A back-up feature in #1077 has a continuation of Ram V's subplot from ''ComicBook/{{Catwoman}}'' wherein teen pickpocket "Shoes" was revealed to Lian Harper, daughter of Arsenal and Cheshire. Cheshire gets called out by Lian for abandoning her in Gotham years prior and allowing everyone to believe she was dead, with the reveal Cheshire secretly visited Lian a couple of times. The trouble is, over in ''ComicBook/GreenArrow2023'', it had been firmly established Cheshire had nothing to do with Lian's current situation. [[spoiler:Lian's death had been faked as a result of Amanda Waller working with Malcolm Merlyn and Parallax to keep the Arrow Family torn apart, and her increased age was due to being teleported all over the universe to keep her from her dad.]] ''Green Arrow'' #5 even had her admit outright when Cheshire saw Lian in ''Catwoman'' #39, she had no idea how Lian was alive again or so much older. Lian herself admitted she didn't know if her mother was aware of her identity when they encountered each other in Gotham City.
