Added DiffLines:

* TheAce: Given all that was said about him prior to Academia's invasion it appears he was this and was believed to be well on his way to becoming Heartland's Champion. After meeting Yuya he constantly shows ''why'' he was the favorite in becoming Heartland's champion handily defeating Gongenzaka and Sawatari at the same time, handily defeated Kurosaki and 3 Obelisk Force members, more than likely would've defeated Yuya if not for Kurosaki's timely arrival, and quickly figured out how to counter the foreign Extra Deck mechanics used by the Lancers.

Added DiffLines:

* CurbstompBattle: Kaito regularly deals these out as if it was going out of style whether it's FTKs or multiple OTKs at once, so far he's only lost ''once'' in the entire series.

Together with his friends, he's a member of Resistance, a rebel group that fends off Academia soldiers. At some point, when Yuri kidnapped Ruri, Yuto encountered Yugo, who was looking for the kidnapped Rin; both of them mistake each other for the kidnapper and dueled each other until Yugo disappeared. After Sora loses to Kurosaki in the Maiami Championship, Yuto pays him a visit to interrogate him, which eventually leads to his meeting with Yuya. Despite Yuya's initial hostility, Yuto makes peace him and tells him about the existence of the other dimensions. Shortly after that, Yugo appears out of nowhere and they duel each other again, still believing that they are enemies. But once they summon their dragons, they are possessed by their SuperpoweredEvilSide. While Yuya manages to bring Yuto back to his senses, he fails to do the same with Yugo, resulting that Yuto loses the duel and is greatly injured by Yugo's last attack. He wields the shadows to protect her, since she resembles Ruri. Accepting that they are not the same, but relieved that Yuzu is learning Fusion Summoning not for evil, he tells her about his mission. After Sora loses to Kurosaki in the Maiami Championship, Yuto pays him "Cipher" archetype, a visit to interrogate him, which eventually leads to his meeting with Yuya. Despite Yuya's initial hostility, Yuto makes peace him and tells him about the existence of the other dimensions. Shortly after that, Yugo appears out of nowhere and they duel each other again, still believing that they are enemies. It is later revealed that he is the Xyz Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them [[OnlySixFaces sharing cards with the same face]].name on the field, even if he has to manipulate them to fulfill his requirements.

!!!Tropes associated with Yuto:
* AllLovingHero: Despite his deep hatred for Academia, Yuto usually does not want to harm his enemies. [[spoiler:But he does have limits as seen in Episode 104, where he decides that peace can only come ''after'' completely destroying Academia.]]
* AllegedLookalikes: They're not completely different, but he's different enough to Yuya that it's a bit of a head scratcher as to why Yuzu can't make herself believe they're really not the same person. That being said, he's the most alike out of Yuya's counterparts in terms of hairstyle, which probably wouldn't be too difficult for Yuya to pull off.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Yuto has shown a strong dedication to saving Ruri; when he thought Yuzu was Ruri he would follow her around just to protect her, even asking especially about her when he and Sora first met. [[spoiler:This becomes more heartwarming after Episode 124, since it's revealed that Yuto is in love with Ruri.]]
* {{Badass}}:
** Curb-stomps Sawatari in their duel. Using just his ''initial hand''. Yuto didn't use the card he drew from his deck on his second turn.
** He is able to go ninja just like Sora, and can block a D-Wheel attacking him.
** Speaking of Sora, it's pretty explicitly shown that had he not been merciful, he would have curb-stomped him.
** [[spoiler:Takes over Yuya's body during the duel with Edo Phoenix and summons a stronger version of his ace dragon, Dark ''Requiem'' Xyz Dragon.]]
* BadassCape: Combined with ScarfOfAsskicking during his first couple of appearances.
* BadassLongCoat: His trademark outfit and it has short sleeves.
* BequeathedPower: Sort of. By giving Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, he also gives him his soul, his SuperpoweredEvilSide, and his ability to Xyz summon.
* BerserkButton:
** Saying you'll hurt his friends, and Sora hits it deliberately to get him to duel him.
** Being reminded of his homeland's destruction is a major button. Each time he was reminded, he awoke while he was inside Yuya.
** As of Episode 124, [[spoiler:messing negatively with Ruri in any way, shape, or form.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: First he saved Yuzu from dueling Sawatari, and intervened to prevent Kurosaki from dueling Masumi.
* BlackKnight: Sawatari nicknames him "Knight-kun" when Yuto tries to protect Yuzu, and he seems to have a knight motif. His Spell Card monsters are black horse-riding knights, and Yuto's is a more noble person than his partner Kurosaki, but Yuto still supports him. His deck is later revealed to be a Phantom Knights deck, monsters covered in black clothes and/or armor.
* BorrowedCatchphrase: The phrase "bringing smiles to others through Dueling" was a philosophy that Yuya at first thought was something Yuto learned from his [[spoiler:father when he was in the Xyz Dimension]]. It turns out that Yuto really borrowed this from Ruri, as a way to honor her wishes.
* TheBusCameBack: He returns to being a major character in the Xyz Dimension arc after the Synchro Dimension arc [[DemotedToExtra demoted him to extra.]] The fifth opening makes note of this with by emphasizing Yuto's overbearing presence.
* CastingAShadow: His "Phantom Knights" archetype is primarily DARK in nature.
* CollaredByFashion: A small one that brings Yugi's to mind.
* TheCynic: In contrast to Yuya, who believes he can get through to Edo, Yuto repeatedly tells Yuya that he can't understand him through dueling.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was once a resident of Heartland, a sprawling city from the Xyz Dimension that was a once-fun and peaceful realm until it was brought to ruin by the efforts of the Fusion Dimension.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Unlike his friend Kurosaki, Yuto doesn't assault people and he prefers to end conflicts peacefully if possible.
* {{Determinator}}: He makes a comment in Episode 35 that echoes Kurosaki's words of getting up and fighting despite being knocked down.
* EvilCounterpart: Subverted. At his first appearance he looked like one, but as the series went on he was quickly revealed to be very noble.
* {{Expy}}: For [[Manga/YuGiOh Atem]]. Both have a traumatic past, were first introduced as enigmatic individuals but gradually got warmer, and they both look like the main hero (Yugi and Yuya). It's even more obvious come Season 3, when Yuto's spirit within Yuya becomes more active and he acts as his SpiritAdvisor, just like Atem did to Yugi. [[spoiler:He's also able to take over Yuya's body and duel through him, and is becoming much more aggressive after seeing his home in ruins again, very similar to Atem's attitudes in the early anime and manga before he mellowed out.]]
* FamousLastWords: While not "dead", [[SharingABody per se,]] his final line before merging with Yuya was "Bring smiles with your Duels". This subsequently became Yuya's personal ArcWords for the duration of the current TournamentArc, and was referred back to with enough repetition that both the line, and by extension "egao"[[note]]Japanese for "smile"[[/note]], underwent MemeticMutation among the fandom.
* FightingYourFriend: [[spoiler:In episode 124, he finally meets Ruri again only to have to duel her. With the added bonus that he learned from Kurosaki that saving Ruri by simply beating the Parasite Fusioner within her is ineffective.]]
* FirstNameBasis: He's currently the only character who refers to Kurosaki by his first name, strengthening the fact they are best friends. It's later revealed that everyone from Heartland seems to call him by his first name.
* FlatWhat: Yuto hilariously conveys this wordlessly on his face when [[spoiler:a flashback in Episode 124 shows that Kurosaki introduced Ruri as his little sister. He looks back and forth between the two in sheer disbelief, with Kurosaki being annoyed by it.]]
* FlipPersonality: [[spoiler:In the Xyz Dimension arc, it's revealed that if he wills it, Yuto can gain temporary control over Yuya's body while still remaining sane, marked by Yuya's eyes changing to a pale gray color. In Episode 104, where this ability is first demonstrated, he and Yuya go back and forth quite a bit while fighting Edo, a high-ranking Academia soldier.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Yuya, even down to their color palettes. While Yuya loves to entertain people and he's all smiles, Yuto never fools around and he's all serious. But both care for Yuzu. It's later shown that they are NotSoDifferent, as Yuya believes that duels are meant to bring people their smiles, and Yuto agrees with him in his depth of his heart and he doesn't want to hurt people anymore with dueling.
** Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is one to Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Having their summoning method as the third word in their name, the same attack and defense points. But having mirrored poses, Dark Rebellion's card background is a dark starry sky while Odd-Eyes' is a bright starry sky.
* FusionDance: The first few times when Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide shows up, the audience can see both him and Yuto "combining".
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: His SuperpoweredEvilSide has them.
* GoOutWithASmile: He smiles as his body fades away, although his soul remains with Yuya.
* GogglesDoNothing: Wore goggles with his facemask during his first appearance. Subverted, as they did protect his eyes from flying debris when he shielded Yuzu, but the lens broke. He abandons the goggles by the time of his next appearance.
* HeroicSacrifice: When Yugo's Clear Wing Synchro Dragon's final attack destroyed Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon and continued on towards Yuya, Yuto managed to save him by shoving him out of harms way. The result ended up severely injuring Yuto, which led to him being absorbed unintentionally into Yuya's body. What truly makes this heroic is that Yuto went out of his way to protect a person he just met that day and barely knows.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Kurosaki. It is unknown how long they've known each other, but it is revealed in Episode 124 that Yuto has been friends with Kurosaki before he met the latter's younger sister Ruri.
* IAmLegion: Whenever Yuto summons his ace dragon and/or is possessed by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, he and any of his counterparts nearby also undergo Synchronization. The result is that both Yuto and his "twin" start speaking in unison and exude some sort of sinister dark power. [[spoiler:This comes to a near breaking point in Episode 92, where Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri have all of their signature dragons on the field and all are screaming "WE WILL BECOME ONE!!!"]]
* IdenticalStranger: To Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri.
* ImDyingPleaseTakeMyMacGuffin: Gives Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, which is somehow plot-related, to Yuya before vanishing. It's unclear just how permanent his "death" is at the moment.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: His Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is his ace, despite not fitting with his Phantom Knight deck.
* {{Irony}}: Yuto comes from a world inspired by ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL'', often considered to be one of the more lighthearted and goofiest series of ''Yu-Gi-Oh!'', but he is easily the most serious and angsty of the Yuyas.
* ItsAllMyFault: [[spoiler:Yuto regrets going to Standard when he finds out that during his absence, the Academia nearly wiped out his home, blaming himself for not being there to save everyone.]]
* KnightOfCerebus: His actions kicked off a best-of-three competition between LDS and You Show, with the latter at risk of being overtaken. He also hinted the existence of a GreaterScopeVillain, Academia.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Associated with the track Duel of Rebellion, a melancholic but heroic track.
* LeParkour: Yuto is quite acrobatic, even more so than Yuya, a known Entertainment Duelist whose profession is to move quickly around the field. This makes sense as participating in the Dimensional War has sharpen Yuto's physical abilities considerably. Several known examples include:
** Leaping around the warehouse trying to avoid Sora in Episode 15 and clashing with the kid in midair.
** Running around and ''keeping'' up with Yugo in Episode 37 while his Synchro Counterpart is on a motorcycle.
** Like Yuya, Yuto is quite skilled at moving around an Action Field obtaining Action Cards in Episode 125 while dueling both [[spoiler:Ruri and Serena.]]
* LethalJokeCharacter: No, seriously. In his home dimension, his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon would have been little more than a beatstick, since its effect in the anime can only be used on a Level 5 or higher monster. Problem is that since this is the Xyz Dimension, his opponent would be using an Xyz Monster and Xyz Monsters don't have Levels, making Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's effect useless. Against the Fusion Dimension, however, it's a different story.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Yuto insists Yuya not tell the others about his soul being inside of him, since they just wouldn't believe it anyway. However, Yuya eventually tells them anyway, and Kurosaki is remarkably okay with it.
* LoveAtFirstSight: During the flashback scenes in Episode 124, it's revealed that Yuto fell for Ruri the first time he met her.
* LuminescentBlush: Episode 124 shows both [[spoiler:Yuto and Ruri sitting together on a park bench during the sunset. It's implied that they both had a fun date and Ruri snuggles up close with Yuto as a result. Yuto turns crimson with happiness.]]
* MadeOfIron: Was thrown into a real wall with enough force to crack and leave a hole, and he just gets up and continues dueling like nothing had happened.
* MrExposition: Acts as one to Yuya in regards to Heartland's past.
* MulticoloredHair: His hair is both purple and black.
* MindScrew: A walking one for Yuzu for a while.
* MrExposition: He explains the Four Dimensions to Yuya.
* MysteriousProtector: To Yuzu. Sawatari even called him "Knight-kun" for coming out of nowhere to save the princess.
* NiceGuy: He's actually very kindhearted, and isn't nearly as violent as Kurosaki is. In fact, similar to Yuya, he hates hurting people and doesn't like seeing others suffering.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Just like Kurosaki, he never responds to any trash talk and calmly plays his turn. He wasn't fazed at all, meeting Yuya, who is said to look just like him. However, he was going to leave Sora alone since he was injured, until he provoked him. He's also a lot more merciful, trying not to hurt his opponent, and stops the duel with Yuya once Sora is taken away.
* NotQuiteDead: After disappearing into the light after his duel with Yugo, he merges with Yuya, transferring his soul and Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon to him. While his physical body is gone, he's still around, and appears from time to time when Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide emerges or simply when Yuto appears as a SpiritAdvisor.
* NotSoDifferent:
** To Yuya, Episode 35 shows this the best. Yuto prepares his Duel Disk just like Yuya does. Also Yuya and Yuto have the same motivation, protecting their friends, something Yuto seems to note.
** Subconsciously, and as part of his and Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide, Yuto becomes similar to his best friend Kurosaki, hating the Fusion dimension and its inhabitants for what they did to his home dimension and wanting nothing more but their total destruction, although in this case, it's taken UpToEleven. [[spoiler:In Episode 104, as a result of seeing how Heartland fell into further ruin when he was in Standard, he grows more aggressive and focuses on taking down Academia members.]]
** Episode 124 shows that he's also similar to his Synchro counterpart, Yugo. Both boys are [[spoiler:in love with their girls, only Yuto is a LOT more subtle about it.]]
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: A meta example. Nobody InUniverse knew his name (some don't even know he exists). His nickname, Dark Duelist, was given by the creators to the public. His true name is revealed in Episode 21.
** Hilariously, in Episode 103, Sawatari still doesn't know who "Yuto" is.
* OutOfFocus: Spends his time sleeping inside Yuya for the majority of the Synchro arc.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: Grabs Kurosaki this way after knocking him out in Episode 21.
* PragmaticHero: While Yuto does want a peaceful resolution, he is not afraid to hurt his enemies or even his [[spoiler:rogue allies]] when needed.
* PerpetualFrowner: In contrast with Yuya's PerpetualSmiler. Subverted, in that he later reveals that he shares Yuya's idealism and tells Yuya to bring smiles with Duels.
* PersonalityPowers: A card set composed of {{Black Knight}}s, the Phantom Knights, fits a shadowy but well-meaning duelist like Yuto like a glove.
* PutOnABus: After he is absorbed by Yuya, Yuto's spirit shows up only a couple of times later on. After Yuya, Gongenzaka, Sawatari, and Kurosaki arrive in Heartland, Yuto seems to show up more often.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He told off Sawatari for his lack of determination in their duel.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: [[spoiler:In episode 125, when he and Yuya are awakening in sync, Yuto has the same eyes as Yuya.]]
* ReluctantWarrior: He only dueled to protect Yuzu and gather some information about LDS from Sawatari. After getting what he wanted, he was willing to step out of the duel, but Sawatari made him give the final blow. He also calls Sawatari out for not having the dueling experience gained by suffering, implying he has a dark past that has made him cynical. His line to Yuzu before he duels Sawatari in her stead, "I don't want you to get hurt again", supports this. Furthermore, his reluctance during his duels with Sora and Yugo demonstrate this further, as well as his parting words.
** Yuto's dueling style reflects his passive nature; he uses trap cards that negates the opponent's attacks and effects, thus bringing the conflict to a non-violent end. Also, with the exception of Yugo, Yuto always offers his opponents the opportunity to either surrender or stop the duel entirely; in all three of his on-screen duels, only Yuya takes him up on his offer.
* TheRival: Yugo's. They loathe each other due to mistaking each other for Yuri, who took away each other's precious person.
* {{Revenge}}: Like Kurosaki and Kaito, even the more pacifistic Yuto seeks revenge for his homeland. Since he's inside Yuya's body, Yuto's memories and his hate for Academia has triggered Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide a couple of times. [[spoiler:His hatred and grief eventually overcome Yuto and he takes over Yuya's body twice during their duel with Edo, which also corrupts Yuya. Later he, along with Yuya, becomes angry and vengeful towards the Doktor for what he did to the bracelet girls.]]
* RuleOfSymbolism: His dragons represent his mindset.
** Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon represents his will to fight against Academia, the invaders who destroyed his hometown. Since the Resistance is a small group of people and they fight an entire army, Yuto is nothing more than a rebel. Additionally, ''Dark'' Rebellion also represents Yuto's dark side which often comes out of his pacifistic nature.
** [[spoiler:Dark Requiem Xyz Dragon represents Yuto's grief for his comrades and the citizens of Heartland, as Yuto's disappearance let them out of Academia's mercy. It also represents Yuto's growth of his hatred and his will to fight.]]
** Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon represents the bond between Yuto and Yuya and their wrath. Unlike Dark Rebellion and [[spoiler:Dark Requiem]] which are designed to fight in direct one-on-one battles, Odd-Eyes Rebellion is created to annihilate their enemies with no mercy. Similar like Yuto's hatred corrupts Yuya, Dark Rebellion corrupts Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Combined with BadassCape. Currently, he's wearing the scarf on his right arm.
* SharingABody: Yuto's soul/body is inside Yuya and can at times influence or share thoughts with his counterpart. This allows Yuya access to Yuto's Dimensional Dragon.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Just like Kurosaki, though Yuto appears to be taking it better. However, later episodes show that the war has been taking its toll on Yuto.
* ShipTease: Yuto seems to care quite a bit about Ruri. His main goal is to find and free her. To the point the only reason Yuto was protecting Yuzu at first was because he thought she was Ruri. [[spoiler:Episode 104 reveals he got his "make the world smile through dueling" ideals from her as well. Episode 124 shows several flashbacks of Yuto meeting and interacting with Ruri, with implications that they are mutually interested to each other.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Strangely enough, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's modus operandi.
* ShootTheDog: [[spoiler:Yuya holds back against Edo simply because he naively believes that Edo would tell him about his father. Edo would have done nothing of the sort, instead simply intending to take Yuya hostage in order to get to Yusho. In order to prevent this, Yuto takes over Yuya's body, against Yuya's own will, to fight back against Edo.]]
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: [[spoiler:He starts to slip into this in Episode 104, telling Yuya that while his and Yusho's ideals are beautiful, they can only be achieved if Academia is defeated.]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The VersusCharacterSplash and Opening 6 spells his name in romanji as "Ute". However, his name is written in katakana, which gives us "Yuto".
* SpiritAdvisor: The first few times when Yuya is possessed by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, we see Yuto's spirit emerging with Yuya. Yuto's spirit shows up a couple of times later on during the Synchro saga but only to show viewers that he's still with Yuya and only partially influences Yuya's decisions with his memories of Heartland's invasion. He fully embraces this role in the Xyz Dimension arc, where his spirit within Yuya fully awakens, allowing them to speak to each other in the same manner as Yugi and Atem, or Yuma and Astral. [[spoiler:Deconstructed in Episode 104 when Yuya attempts to be peaceful instead of being violent; he takes control of Yuya's body in order to defeat Edo. Over time, however, Yuto returns to his pacifistic self after witnessing the results of Yuya's idealism winning over his opponents.]]
* SplitPersonality: Just likes Yuya, though his makes him more destructive, maybe even reaching OmnicidalManiac.
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: [[spoiler:While he's not really Yuya's split personality, he takes over Yuya's body in Episode 104 when Yuya refuses to listen to him, attempting to crush Edo in a duel. Later in Episode 124, as a result of Yuto's strong feelings for Ruri, his deck ends up appearing in Yuya's deck during their duel due to their {{Synchronization}}. Yuto eventually takes Yuya's body over, to the point that the viewers and some characters can see Yuto, but the monitor footage depict Yuya's body.]]
* StalkerWithACrush: While the "crush" part is debatable, we do see him following Yuzu around from a distance in Episode 15. She may be a ReplacementGoldfish for Ruri, Kurosaki's little sister. Justified, he thought Yuzu was Ruri as they're {{Identical Stranger}}s and the last time he saw her, she was kidnapped. [[spoiler:Episode 124 shows that Yuto is in love with Ruri, which makes his determination to protect anyone who looks like Ruri all the more sense.]]
* TheStoic: Yuto's default personality. Whether he used to be happier and more lively before Academia invaded his dimension remains to be seen.
** NotSoStoic: However, Yuto does carry regret and anger over what happened to his dimension deep down and when the right buttons are pushed, he can lose his temper. His SuperpoweredEvilSide does away with his stoic nature entirely. [[spoiler:Episode 104 shows that Yuto's regrets came to a breaking point and he becomes more aggressive when it comes to trying to fight Academia. He calms down a few episodes later. Later becomes incensed again when he finds out what the Doktor did to the bracelet girls, particularly Ruri. Episode 124 shows a lighter side of this as he falls for Ruri. Ending 6 shows that Yuto is wary of being seen with Ruri romantically whenever Kurosaki is around and tries to unsuccessfully hide himself with his own jacket.]]
* SuperSpeed: He showed incredibly high speed in Episode 35. Episode 37 shows that he can keep up for a time against Yugo while the latter is on his motorcycle.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Similar to Yuya and Yugo, Yuto loses himself to a darker side when his SuperpoweredEvilSide is initiated. Inadvertently becomes this for Yuya after he somehow fuses his consciousness with the guy and in times of distress, Yuya becomes more violent as a result, despite Yuto being an inherent [[NiceGuy good man]], although Yuya's own SuperpoweredEvilSide has likely more to do with it.
* {{Synchronization}}: [[spoiler:In episode 87-88 and 92, his mind syncs alongside Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri's.]]
* TagTeam: [[spoiler:With his willpower, Yuto is able to take over Yuya's body or can synchronize with him, which allows them to magically draw Yuto's cards from Yuya's deck. Because of that, Yuto is able to draw one of his Rank-Up Magic Spell Cards during the first duel with Edo in Episode 104, and later in Episode 124, Yuya/Yuto's starting hand consists entirely of Yuto's cards.]]
* TakeUpMySword: After his defeat against Yugo, Yuto gives to Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon before he fuses with him.
* TakingTheBullet: Just as Yugo's finishing attack is about to hit Yuya, Yuto pushes him out of the way and takes the hit instead.
* TapOnTheHead: Punch to the solar plexus variety, used against Kurosaki when the latter was starting trouble in episode 21.
* ThemeNaming: His real name is Yuto, making him the third person to have the friendship prefix.
* ThreeAmigos: The Xyz Dimension Saga portrays Yuto, Kurosaki and Ruri as this, since flashbacks and old photos show the three doing practically everything together.
* TookALevelInCynic: Yuto used to be a stoic but idealistic young man before the invasion. Afterwards, he's barely holding on to his idealism as his dimension falls apart, his friends are taken away and his enemies are still roaming free committing more heinous crimes. Is it any wonder why he's the most pragmatic of Yuya's counterparts? [[spoiler:Episode 104 reveals that he eventually grows tired of constantly being passive and starts to believe that being aggressive will save his home dimension from Academia. Yuya talks him out of this, saying that being hateful will solve nothing and only lead to more conflict.]]
* TrueCompanions: Values his comrades immensely, swearing to stop at nothing to save them. He even considers Kurosaki his best friend, despite the man's hot-headed nature, and was willing to fight to the bitter end if it means he can save Ruri. He later comes to think of Yuya as this as well, given how close the two are with each other now.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Willing to do what is necessary to create a world without conflict, and to save his comrades. Subverted in that he's much more compassionate towards his enemies than Kurosaki, and tries to avoid fights whenever possible.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:Gives one to Yuya in Episode 104 over his decision to reason with an enraged Edo, telling him that even Yusho's Entertainment Dueling is useless against the commanding officer of Academia.]]
* WhenHeSmiles: Yuto is always seen with a frown on his face. The only times he ever smiled genuinely was when he got to know Yuzu while bidding her farewell and entrusting Yuya with his ace monster before being absorbed into him. Yuzu was visibly affected when she sees it, as it makes him resemble Yuya even more. Flashbacks of Yuto's homeland before Academia and him [[spoiler:interacting with Ruri]] has him smiling a lot more.
* WholeCostumeReference: His outfit besides his cape looks just like Yuma's school uniform except dark and edgy instead of light and colorful.
* TheWorfEffect: Loses to Yugo, but Yuya's interference may have caused this.

to:

!!!Tropes associated with Yuto:
Kaito:
* AllLovingHero: AwesomenessByAnalysis: He claims that he has a knack for figuring out what he needs to counter specific play styles after witnessing them in action at least once. After he defeats Sawatari and Gongenzaka, he anticipates Yuya using Pendulum Summon to Special Summon multiple monsters at once in the following duel, and uses Double Exposure and Double Sensor Ship to take advantage of Yuya's swarming capabilities.
* BadassLongcoat: Retains his trademark black duster, but he does not have his Photon Change ability, since he isn't hunting Numbers.
* BerserkButton: Academia's actions in Heartland leaves a sore spot for Kaito.
** Not to the same extent, but he is not happy when he sees Kurosaki use Action Cards.
** [[spoiler:Being treated like a villain would definitely piss him off. Dennis gets his comeuppance for it.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: Saves Yuya from the Obelisk Force's Chaos Giant after Kurosaki gets taken out by saving Sayaka.]]
* BlindedByTheLight: When he flees from his duel with Yuya, the resulting flash cast by the Spell Card blinds everyone except Kurosaki.
* CallBack: Upon confronting Yuya, Sawatari, and Gongenzaka, he states his old ''ZEXAL'' CatchPhrase: "Are you ready to repent?"
* CatchPhrase: "Are you ready to repent?" gets uttered once per episode with his appearances so far.
* CombatPragmatist: The first thing he does when he sees three Academia soldiers is to immediately attack and card them before they can do anything.
* CostumeEvolution: A downplayed but meaningful example: the FingerlessGloves he had in ''ZEXAL'' are swapped out for a red Resistance scarf tied around his hand. Also, the card plate on his Duel Disk is swapped for a HardLight version in keeping with the rest of the ''ARC-V'' Disks, but retains its unusual crescent shape.
* CynicismCatalyst: Turns out he was pretty amiable before the invasion; he was a well-known celebrity in Heartland.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: The reason why Kaito is extremely hostile towards Yuya's group is because his family got carded by Academia after Kurosaki and Yuto went to Standard.
* TheDreaded: He's carded enough of Academia's soldiers for them to put a bounty on his head.
* {{Expy}}:
** His introduction also bears a significant resemblance to that of Tokumatsu, given that they're both celebrity Duelists who later TookALevelInCynic, putting them at odds with Yuya's philosophy, with their fans attesting that they used to be kind individuals.
** Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon is a composite of Kaito's ''ZEXAL'' aces: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, sharing its stats and appearance, and No. 62: Galaxy-Eyes Prime Photon Dragon, being a two-material Rank 8 Xyz evolution of the former. Its kanji reads "Galaxy-Eyes Lightwave Dragon," furthering the reference to photons. Even the summon chant is nearly identical to that of the original Galaxy-Eyes. The biggest difference? He replaces "embody the light of hope" with "embody the ''wrathful God of retribution''."
** In addition, its status as a Blue-Eyes {{Expy}} is emphasized by the fact that he has at least two of them, and can have three if he uses its effect.
* FatalFlaw: He's so [[UnstoppableRage pissed off]], he can't even think straight, even when more reasonable duelists like Yuya and Gongenzaka try to talk him first before engaging.
* FightingYourFriend: [[spoiler:Duels against Kurosaki, a fellow Resistance member, in episode 105.]]
* {{Foil}}:
** He's one to Kurosaki. They are both highly skilled Xyz Duelists that lost their family to the Academia which resulted in them growing more vicious as a result and have/had a IWorkAlone attitude. But while Kurosaki slowly got better due to the Lancers and [[spoiler:Crow]], Kaito's wraith grew to the point he [[spoiler:very nearly carded Kurosaki for attempting to bring him back to the Resistance.]]
**
Despite both being past characters who were expies of Kaiba, ''ARC-V's'' versions of Kaito and Jack are nearly polar opposites in past, attitude and dueling style. Kaito lived a pretty regular life with his deep hatred for family before the Invasion, but grew vicious and cold during the war. [[IWorkAlone He refuses to work with anyone]] and is willing to card anyone that gets in his way even former allies. Jack in comparison was an orphan living on the streets and personally compared his eyes back them to [[TheWoobie Reira's]] but retains a strong moral compass despite his past and is ultimately a pacifist who desires peers. A further difference is their dueling style while Kaito's strength is analyzing his opponents' dueling style and coming up with a perfect counter, Jack uses his overwhelming might and tactics to utterly destroy his opponents. But they are both seen as the strongest duelist that their dimension has to offer and use a Dragon, which they personally refer to as part of themselves, as their ace.
* FriendOrFoe: His first meeting with Yuya's group involves this. Thanks to Sawatari's idiotic antics and Kaito's own anger of
Academia, he decided that Yuya's group are foes, [[spoiler:until Kurosaki states that they are his comrades, and the fact that Yuya looks like Yuto usually does not want and has the family name Sakaki confuses him even more.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Alongside Kurosaki, he was good with children prior
to harm Academia's invasion.
* GoodIsNotNice: And he's even worse than Kurosaki in [[PragmaticHero Pragmatic Heroism]].
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Kaito went from a smiling ace duelist to being just as ruthless as the Academia soldiers who destroyed
his enemies. [[spoiler:But home. It's to the point he's even willing to card former friends if he does have limits feels they're a hindrance.
* TheHunter: While his ''ZEXAL'' incarnation hunted Numbers, here he's hunting Academia duelists.
* IcyBlueEyes: Fitting his cold demeanor.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: His ace monster, Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, the ''ARC-V'' variant of Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon.
* IWorkAlone: He had some previous relationship with Kurosaki, Sayaka, and Allen, but now refuses to work with them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Provokes Sawatari and Gongenzaka into Dueling him because he was just trying hard to protect what's left of his home.
* KickTheDog: He refers to "comrades"
as seen just burdensome baggage when they inevitably are defeated and their losses would demoralize him. Thus, any attempts at friendship, even from his former allies, are slapped aside with a glare.
** [[spoiler:When Kaito threatened to seal Kurosaki in a card, he wasn't joking, and he would've do so if it weren't for [[MoralityChain Sayaka]].]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Gives one to Dennis for his actions back in Heartland
in Episode 104, where he decides that peace can only come ''after'' completely destroying Academia.114.]]
* TheLancer: [[spoiler:Temporarily takes over Kurosaki's role to Yuya's group in Episode 112.]]
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Cipher Wing, Cipher Twin Raptor, Cipher Mirror Knight, Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, and [[spoiler:Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon.
]]
* AllegedLookalikes: They're not completely different, but he's different enough LeaveHimToMe: [[spoiler:Says this to Yuya that it's a bit of a head scratcher as to why Yuzu can't make herself believe they're really not the same person. That being said, he's the most alike out of Yuya's counterparts in terms of hairstyle, which probably wouldn't be too difficult for Yuya to pull off.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Yuto has shown a strong dedication to saving Ruri; when he thought Yuzu was Ruri he would follow her around just to protect her, even asking especially about her when he
before taking over his and Sora first met. [[spoiler:This becomes more heartwarming after Kurosaki's Duel in Episode 124, since it's revealed that Yuto is in love with Ruri.109.]]
* {{Badass}}:
** Curb-stomps Sawatari in their duel. Using just
LightEmUp: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon. Interestingly, the kanji is "Galaxy-Eyes ''Lightwave'' Dragon." His others Ciphers are also light-themed.
* LightIsGood: [[spoiler:After [[TookALevelInKindness cooling
his ''initial hand''. Yuto didn't use the card head off]], he drew from mellows out significantly and offers his deck on his second turn.
** He is able
services to go ninja just like Sora, and can block a D-Wheel attacking him.
** Speaking of Sora, it's pretty explicitly shown that had he not been merciful, he would have curb-stomped him.
** [[spoiler:Takes over
Yuya's body during group in their quest to end the duel with Edo Phoenix and summons a stronger version of his ace dragon, Dark ''Requiem'' Xyz Dragon.interdimensional war.]]
* BadassCape: Combined LightIsNotGood: While his Cipher monsters are LIGHT monsters, he's a rage-driven {{Jerkass}}.
* MeaningfulName: Just like last time, his surname has heavenly and light themes and he's also "[[TheHunter The Heartless Hunter]]".
* MyHeroZero: "Cipher" is a term for the number zero, possibly used as a CallBack to the other Kaito's occupation as a Number Hunter.
* OhCrap: When Yuya Xyz Summons Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Kaito has a minor freak-out. Seeing him summon two Monsters
with ScarfOfAsskicking during his first couple of appearances.
* BadassLongCoat: His trademark outfit and it has short sleeves.
* BequeathedPower: Sort of. By giving Yuya his
the same Levels, then going into Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, he also gives Dragon just makes him freak out even more.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: He has no problems carding three Academia students in
his soul, his SuperpoweredEvilSide, and his ability to Xyz summon.
* BerserkButton:
** Saying you'll hurt his friends, and Sora hits it deliberately to get him to duel him.
** Being reminded of his homeland's destruction is a major button. Each time he was reminded, he awoke while he was inside Yuya.
** As of
appearance in Episode 124, [[spoiler:messing negatively with Ruri 100. When Yuya protests carding in any way, shape, or form.general in Episode 102, Kaito responds very coldly that Academia's duelists have carded hundreds of people, so he'll card thousands of them in return.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:In Episode 109, Kaito bails out Yuya's group from the Obelisk Force, and then tells Yuya to worry about his comrades.
]]
* {{Determinator}}: He makes a comment
** [[spoiler:Later in Episode 35 110, when Yuya is about to Duel Edo while his group is taking their leave, Kaito gives the unconscious Kurosaki a piggyback ride. It seems that echoes Kurosaki's words of getting up and fighting despite being knocked down.
* EvilCounterpart: Subverted. At his first appearance he looked like one, but as the series went on he was quickly revealed to be very noble.
* {{Expy}}: For [[Manga/YuGiOh Atem]]. Both
PowerOfFriendship speech during their Duel does have a traumatic past, were first introduced as enigmatic individuals but gradually got warmer, and they both look like the main hero (Yugi and Yuya). It's even more obvious come Season 3, when Yuto's spirit within Yuya becomes more active and he acts as his SpiritAdvisor, just like Atem did some effect on Kaito after all.]]
** [[spoiler:His speech

and duel Shun. How important my comrades are, how wonderful smiles are, and how Dueling is supposed to protect these things. I'm sure he realized the same thing as well. That's why he came here, so that he can redeem himself for stealing away many smiles through him, and is becoming much more aggressive after seeing his home in ruins again, very similar to Atem's attitudes in Dueling. If he bravely admits the early anime and manga before he mellowed out.mistakes they have made, I have to do the same thing as well. I have inflicted fear upon countless Academia soldiers too."]]
* ThePowerOfFriendship: [[spoiler:Which ultimately allows him to summon Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, thanks to Sayaka's Little Fairy.
]]
* FamousLastWords: While not "dead", [[SharingABody per se,]] his final line before merging ThePowerOfHate: Just like any other Resistance members.
* PragmaticHero: You can thank Academia for blowing up Heartland.
* PsychoRangers: Non-villainous example: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon is similar to Yuya's Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, as both dragons are Xyz Monsters
with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF and they have special eyes and mechanical wings that can be activated, and both of them represent the wrath of their owners.
* TheRival: Was TheAce of the Clover Branch of Heartland Duel School, a rival to the Kurosaki siblings and Yuto's Spade Branch.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Does not approve of
Yuya was and Yuto's "Bring smiles with your Duels". This subsequently became Duels" philosophy.
* SixthRanger: [[spoiler:Appears to be one (unofficially) for
Yuya's personal ArcWords for the duration of the current TournamentArc, and was referred back to with enough repetition that both the line, and by extension "egao"[[note]]Japanese for "smile"[[/note]], underwent MemeticMutation among the fandom.
* FightingYourFriend: [[spoiler:In episode 124, he finally meets Ruri again only to have to duel her. With the added bonus that he learned
group, starting from Kurosaki that saving Ruri by simply beating the Parasite Fusioner within her is ineffective.Episode 109 onwards.]]
* FirstNameBasis: He's currently StealthPun: Aside from "Cipher" meaning "Lightwave" or "Zero", it also has something to the only character who refers word "Lu'''cifer'''".
* TagTeamTwins: His Cipher deck reinforces this trope. He runs multiple copies of the same monster, uses effects that support or weaken monsters with the same name, and he can even turn the opponent's monsters into "twins". His Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon's can steal another monster on the field and turn it into its twin. Additionally, [[spoiler:Kaito owns at least two copies of Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon]].
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Kaito's first line is stating how he'll never forgive the Academia for their crimes.
* TookALevelInBadass: He was already poised
to become the Duel Champion of Heartland, and according to Yuto and Allen he's even stronger after the invasion.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Yuto states Kaito used to be a kind and warm individual before the invasion. Well, when your homeland is razed and your family and friends are carded in front of you, it's hard to be happy.
* TookALevelInKindness: Downplayed, but he's starting to reconsider comradery after his Duel against
Kurosaki by his first name, strengthening the fact they are best friends. It's later revealed that everyone from Heartland seems to call him by his first name.
* FlatWhat: Yuto hilariously conveys this wordlessly on his face when [[spoiler:a flashback
back in Episode 124 shows that Kurosaki introduced Ruri as his little sister. He looks back 105 and forth between [[spoiler:restrain himself from sealing the two Obelisk Force in sheer disbelief, with Kurosaki being annoyed by it.cards.]]
* FlipPersonality: [[spoiler:In the Xyz Dimension arc, it's revealed that if he wills it, UnstoppableRage: His dueling used to have more warmth, but is now fueled by his rage and hatred for Academia. Even Yuto can gain temporary control over Yuya's body while still remaining sane, marked by Yuya's eyes changing to a pale gray color. In Episode 104, where this ability is first demonstrated, he not happy with his current Dueling style, and Yuya go back and forth quite a bit while fighting Edo, a high-ranking Academia soldier.]]
* {{Foil}}: To Yuya, even down
is unable to their color palettes. While Yuya loves get through to entertain people and he's all smiles, Yuto never fools around and he's all serious. But both care for Yuzu. It's later shown that they are NotSoDifferent, as Yuya believes that duels are meant to bring people their smiles, and Yuto agrees with him in his depth of due to his heart and he doesn't want to hurt people anymore being closed off.
* UpToEleven: He's pretty much Kurosaki
with dueling.
every aspect of Kurosaki's character subjected to this trope.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Kaito used to be a smiling champion who clearly enjoyed the game, but Academia's invasion turned him into a vengeful AntiHero consumed with rage.
* ViralTransformation: Ciphers rely on this. Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon has the ability to take control of an opponent's monster, then change its name to "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon" and give it its stats. The Continuous Spell "Double Exposure" can also change one monster's name into the name of another monster on the field once per turn during either player's turn.
* TheVirus: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon can seize control of an enemy monster and turn it into itself, albeit only until the end of the turn.
** Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon can permanently take control of all enemy monsters and turn them into itself. However, the copies cannot attack on the turn this happens and will return to their original forms and go back to their original owner if Neo Galaxy-Eyes is destroyed.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Or rather Friendly Rivals, but now he is willing to [[spoiler:card]] Kurosaki.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Seeing Yuya with
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is one to Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Having their summoning method as the third word in their name, the same attack and defense points. But having mirrored poses, Dark Rebellion's card background is a dark starry sky while Odd-Eyes' is a bright starry sky.
* FusionDance: The first few times when Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide shows up, the audience can see both
reminds him and of Yuto "combining".
It is unknown how long they've known each other, but it is revealed
in Episode 124 that Yuto has been friends with Kurosaki before he met the latter's younger sister Ruri.
* NotSoDifferent:

Offensive tactics.

!!!Tropes associated with Ruri:
* AmazonBrigade: Like the other Bracelet Girls, her deck is full of women like Yuzu's, Rin's and Serena's.
* AllLovingHeroine: Ruri shares the Make Everyone Smile with duels mentality, and is where Yuto got it from.
* AndIMustScream: Averted. Sora guessed that she was sealed in a card, like everyone else who lost. Yuri later reveals that this isn't the case. Played straight later on when her [[spoiler:subconscious is fighting against her own infected body to stop "it" from hurting her brother in Episode 119. Sadly, she's still under the parasite's control since in Episode 124, she goes on to attack Yuya.]]
* AnimalMotif: Her deck is based on lusciniae, a genus of singing birds, completing the Kachou Fuugetsu theme of the Bracelet Girls with her bird-themed deck. The episode where she first duels is also called "The Little Bird Trapped in Darkness", which also has "[[Anime/YuGiOhZexal Kotori]]" ("little bird") in the title.
* BadassInDistress: Defeated and spirited away by Yuri. Yuri mentions that her personality was comparable to Yuzu's, and it is shown that after Yuri was able to corner her, she dueled him (even if she lost). [[spoiler:She (or at least while possessed) later comes extremely close to defeating [[MemeticBadass her brother]]]].
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: She has nice earrings and jewelry when Yuri kidnaps her, despite having lived in a war zone for an undetermined amount of time.
* BilingualBonus: "Luscinia" is Latin and has the feminine genus. The term doesn't not only refer to the genus of birds the archetype is based on, but also that all members are female.
* BlowYouAway: Ruri's Lyrical Luscinia deck is full of WIND Winged Beast-Type monsters, similar to Rin's Wind Witch deck being full of WIND Spellcaster-Type monsters. Both decks rely on swarming the field and using damage to whittle down the opponent's life points. Unlike the Wind Witches who use cold, magical wind, the Lyrical Lusciniae attack with [[WindFromBeneathMyWings Wind from Beneath Their Wings]]. However, the wind aspect of the Kachou Fuugetsu principle is not represented by Ruri, but by Rin.
* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:Cain to Kurosaki's Abel, albeit due to being [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainjacked]].]]
* ChekhovMIA: Though mentioned often, she doesn't appear on-screen until episode 75, and in a flashback at that. [[spoiler:She appears for real in Episode 116.]]
* CynicismCatalyst: Her disappearance is what drives Kurosaki's crusade against Academia, which he mistakenly believes includes LDS.
* DeathOfAThousandCuts: Her strategy is this. Her ace monster Lyrical Luscinia - Assembly Nightingale at best has 500 attack points. But due to her effect, she can continually attack her opponent directly slowly destroying them.
* DecompositeCharacter: Ruri's Lyrical Luscinia deck and Rin's Wind Witch deck are basically Rio's Ice Bird deck divided in two themes. Ruri's deck has the bird-motif, while Rin has the ice motif.
* DubNameChange: To Lulu Obsidian. According to Matt Shipman (Kurosaki/Shay's voice actor) it's because it can't be said without sounding ridiculous unless one uses a Japanese accent.
* {{Expy}} and CompositeCharacter: She's both [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Rio]] and [[Manga/YuGiOh Shizuka/Serenity]], due to being the missing sister that the older brother (Kurosaki) goes through hell to find and take care of. Though since she is an Xyz Duelist, she's a bit closer to Rio. She also appears to have the personality of Kotori and relationship to Yuto, which also makes her one for Kotori as well, who was one of Anzu.
** With Shizuka being the original younger sister character of an older brother character, Ruri is the fourth expy of her, after Asuka from ''GX'', Luca from ''5D's'', and Rio from ''ZEXAL''. And like the latter, she uses a bird-themed deck focused on Xyz Summoning.
* FanGirl: Ruri looks really happy seeing Kaito duel, despite Kaito being part of a rival school.
* FeatherMotif: Ruri wears feather-shaped earrings and a feather-shaped bracelet, which not only gives her a connection to her brother's bird motif, but is also a hint of her deck eventually representing the bird kanji ''chou'' of the Kachou Fuugetsu principle. And indeed, her deck, Lyrical Luscinia, is based on said genus of singing birds, and they use feathers to attack.
* FragileSpeedster: Ruri's Assembly Nightingale's effect allows her to speedily use a DeathOfAThousandCuts to fight, but also trends into a Speedy StoneWall due to her effect allowing it to protect herself as well.
* TheGhost: Although she has been mentioned by Yuto and Kurosaki multiple times, she has yet to appear in person. Despite being the first mentioned counterpart of Yuzu, both Serena and Rin (her Fusion and Synchro counterparts respectfully), have appeared on-screen before her. Her appearance is finally revealed in episode 75. [[spoiler:Her proper in-series appearance is in Episode 116.]]
* GirlyRun: She runs like Yuzu, which contrasts Serena's way of running.
* HarpingOnAboutHarpies: Also crossing into EnthrallingSiren due to their musical motif, the Lyrical Luscinia all take the appearance of cute little harpy-like girls, though not the archetype.
* TheHeart: Ruri was this to both Yuto and Kurosaki, [[http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/yugioh/images/1/1e/Lulu_with_Yuto_and_Shay.png/revision/latest?cb=20160508221441 as evidenced here in this photo]]. Her disappearance takes a major toll on the two of them.
* HeroicResolve: Even when Yuri cornered her [[spoiler:or the Doktor infected her with a Parasite Fusioner]], she refused to go down without a fight.
* IdenticalStranger: To Yuzu. The entire reason Yuto even defended Yuzu in Episode 7 was because he thought Yuzu was her.
* IronicEcho: [[spoiler:When she duels Kurosaki and attacks him five times in a row, she counts from the second attack up to the fifth, in the same [[LargeHam fashion]] as Kurosaki did when he dueled Dennis in the Friendship Cup. And one of those had been for her sake too.]]
* TheLastOneOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: Despite being the first of Yuzu's counterparts to be mentioned, she is the last one to be physically shown to the viewers. Unlike her counterparts, Ruri's hair color doesn't match her bracelet, she is the only one of Yuzu's counterparts to have a full name, said named is also written in kanji like Yuzu's and not in katakana unlike Rin and Serena. Ruri is also the only one who met her male counterpart (Yuto) in her teenage years, not in her pre-teen childhood. [[spoiler:She is also the only one who loses her first on-screen duel. Finally, she and Yuto are the only dimensional counterparts who have confirmed on-screen that both have romantic feelings for one another; the others are either one-sided [[note]] Yugo and Yuzu towards Rin and Yuya respectively [[/note]], ambiguous [[note]] Yuya and Rin towards Yuzu and Yugo respectively [[/note]], or hold no feelings at all. [[note]] Yuri and Serena towards each other [[/note]]]]
* LetterMotif: Like Kurosaki's RR, Ruri's motif is LL.
* LivingMacGuffin: Like all of Yuzu's counterparts, she serves as one to Professor Leo Akaba [[spoiler:due to being a reincarnation of his daughter, Ray]].
* LuminescentBlush: In Episode 124, [[spoiler:Ruri blushes happily during her date with Yuto.]]
* MoreThanMindControl: [[spoiler:Even prior to her infection, Ruri was a bit frustrated with her brother and that she was dependent on him, something that the Parasite Fusioner exploits. Her inner consciousness has to fight her dark feelings to overtake her body and save her brother.]]
* MultiColoredHair: Has black hair and two bangs that are lilac, similar to Yuzu, Serena and Rin.
* NiceGirl: Similar to Yuzu and Rin, she's seen helping people in need. Episode 104 shows she fully believes that dueling should only be used for fun instead of war. [[spoiler:She just smiles kindly when Kaito rescues her, compared to Rin's more tsundereish response to Yugo doing the same...which is then horribly subverted next episode when she pushes Kaito off a cliff.[[note]]At that point, Ruri was already corrupted by the "Doktor".[[/note]] It if wasn't for Kurosaki saving the guy at the last minute, Kaito might've died!]]
* NotSoDifferent: Yuto mentions that her personality is very similar to Yuzu's. This applies to Rin as well since Yugo mentions that ''she'' was similar to Yuzu too. Only Serena stands apart from the rest of the girls due to her [[BloodKnight tendencies of dueling whoever stands in her way.]]
* PeoplePuppets: [[spoiler:After being infected by the [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate Doktor's]] [[BrainwashedAndCrazy Parasite Fusioner]], she's forced to fight her beloved older brother. Later she's forced to fight against a doppelganger of her best friend/love interest.]]
* PlotArmor: In Episode 125, both she and Serena [[spoiler:survive a point blank energy blast from Odd Eyes Raging Dragon that ended up eradicating all the Parasite Fusioners in their tanks, scorching the room they were in and blasting open several holes behind them leading to the outside world. Despite this, both girls end up slightly damaged and have enough strength to get up and run away.]]
* RapunzelHair: Her hair goes down past her waist.
* ResistTheBeast: [[spoiler:To save Kurosaki from losing the Duel and being carded, her inner consciousness trapped in darkness fights her corrupted self. However, she only manages to regain her body for a short amount of time. After her duel with Kurosaki, the parasite inside her mind takes her over again when she duels Yuya/Yuto.]]
* ShipTease: With Yuto. [[spoiler:Episode 124 reveals that after being introduced to Yuto by her brother, the two later went on hanging out with each other, one ending with Ruri putting her head on Yuto's shoulder. Ending 6 shows both she and Yuto on another date, with Yuto hilariously hiding himself from Kurosaki's watchful gaze and a confused Ruri looking on.]]
* SiblingYinYang: While Kurosaki's personality has yet to be seen before the invasion, he's known for being hot-headed and reckless. Meanwhile Ruri is shown to be kind and thoughtful, similar to Yuzu if Yuto's word is to be taken seriously, which Episode 104 shows to be true. However, they do love each other dearly and Kurosaki is willing to do ''anything'' to get her back.
* SignificantWardrobeShift: In episode 75, we see that before the invasion she wore a long dress and regular shoes, afterwards as a member of the Resistance she's seen wearing much more practical clothes: a vest with an undershirt, cargo pants and combat boots, the only thing remaining from back then? Her feather accessories, including [[MagneticPlotDevice her bracelet.]]
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:Not as prominent as Rin, but she gives a small sadistic one after watching Kaito plummet to his doom from a cliff ''she'' pushed him off of. Her duel with Kurosaki is half of these, the other half is full of frowning. Starts showing these off again in her duel against Yuya/Yuto.]]
* SmugSmiler: [[spoiler:Under the control of the Parasite Fusioner, Ruri has grown very arrogant and loves taunting her opponents while smiling condescendingly.]]
* StoneWall: Assembly Nightingale is a [[FragileSpeedster speedy]] stone wall, relying on rapid scratch damage to decrease the opponent's Life Points, and also has an effect to protect her from destruction.
* SuicideByCop: [[spoiler:Ruri manages to hold off the Parasite Fusioner, allowing Kurosaki to beat her and save himself. Ruri is still under the Doktor's control, however.]]
* ThreeAmigos: Ruri regularly hangs out with her best friend Yuto and her older brother, Shun Kurosaki. Together, they practically did everything together. Her kidnapping by Academia makes both boys hellbent on getting her back.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Poor girl has no idea that the Heartland invasion started because of ''her'', according to [[TheMole Dennis]][[note]]since he claims it was [[NothingPersonal just a mission]], we still don't know if that's the ''only'' reason[[/note]], once he found her he has no choice but to greenlight the attack so Yuri could take her amidst the chaos.
* WeakButSkilled: Even more than Kurosaki. Ruri uses weak Level 1 monsters and weak Rank 1 monsters to battle, but she utilizes the number of Overlay Units she has to fight her opponents. The more units the monster has, the stronger the effect becomes. When used defensively, Ruri becomes untouchable to an extent.
* WindFromBeneathMyWings: How the Lyrical Lusciniae attack. They flap their wings to create strong gusts.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:Episode 119 is supposed to be her time to shine by giving Kurosaki the fight for his "life". She's almost ''winning''... until the real Ruri pulls a [[SuicideByCop last minute gambit]] and advises Kurosaki to finish her off.]]
* ZergRush: Literally her strategy. Ruri summons a lot of monsters that have low ATK, but provide a lot of Xyz Materials for her Xyz Monsters, which then leads to her unleashing their devastating effects.

However, he tends to be a bit abrasive with a very casual manner of Yuzu's counterparts to have a full name, said named is also written in kanji like Yuzu's speaking and not in katakana unlike Rin and Serena. Ending 6 shows both she and Yuto on another date, with Yuto hilariously hiding himself from Kurosaki's watchful gaze and a confused Ruri looking on.]]
* SiblingYinYang: While Kurosaki's personality has yet to be seen before the invasion,
Yuya is their comrade, he's known for being hot-headed and reckless.

Sayaka Sasayama is a resident
of Heartland, he was a Pro Duelist who was on-track to be Heartland's next Duel Champion Heartland and having fun doing it. Nowadays, he is consumed a survivor along with wrath and has her friend, Allen. Sayaka uses a deep hatred towards Academia and is kind of paranoid towards strangers. As one of the last members of Resistance, he does not hesitate from hostile methods and would card any enemy without mercy. He wields the "Cipher" archetype, a deck Fairy Deck that revolves around having multiples of cards with the same name on the field, even if he has to manipulate them to fulfill his requirements.uses defensive tactics.

!!!Tropes associated with Kaito:
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He claims that he has a knack for figuring out what he needs to counter specific play styles after witnessing them in action at least once.
* {{Expy}}:
* {{Foil}}:
** Despite both being past characters who were expies of Kaiba, ''ARC-V's'' versions of Kaito and Jack are nearly polar opposites in past, attitude and dueling style. Kaito lived a pretty regular life with his family before the Invasion, but grew vicious and cold during the war.
Thanks to Sawatari's idiotic antics and Kaito's own anger of Academia, he decided that Yuya's group are foes, [[spoiler:until Kurosaki states that they are his comrades, and the fact that Yuya looks like Yuto and has the family name Sakaki confuses him even more.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Alongside Kurosaki, he was good with children prior to Academia's invasion.
* GoodIsNotNice: And he's even worse than Kurosaki in [[PragmaticHero Pragmatic Heroism]].
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Kaito went from a smiling ace duelist to being just as ruthless as the Academia soldiers who destroyed his home. It's to the point he's even willing to card former friends if he feels they're a hindrance.
* KickTheDog: He refers to "comrades" as just burdensome baggage when they inevitably are defeated and their losses would demoralize him. Thus, any attempts at friendship, even from his former allies, are slapped aside with a glare.
** [[spoiler:When Kaito threatened to seal Kurosaki in a card, he wasn't joking, and he would've do so if it weren't for [[MoralityChain Sayaka]].]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Gives one to Dennis for his actions back in Heartland in Episode 114.]]
* TheLancer: [[spoiler:Temporarily takes over Kurosaki's role to Yuya's group in Episode 112.]]
* LawOfChromaticSuperiority: Cipher Wing, Cipher Twin Raptor, Cipher Mirror Knight, Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, and [[spoiler:Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon.]]
* LeaveHimToMe: [[spoiler:Says this to Yuya before taking over his and Kurosaki's Duel in Episode 109.]]
* LightEmUp: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon. Interestingly, the kanji is "Galaxy-Eyes ''Lightwave'' Dragon." His others Ciphers are also light-themed.
* LightIsGood: [[spoiler:After [[TookALevelInKindness cooling his head off]], he mellows out significantly and offers his services to Yuya's group in their quest to end the interdimensional war.]]
* LightIsNotGood: While his Cipher monsters are LIGHT monsters, he's a rage-driven {{Jerkass}}.
Seeing him summon two Monsters with the same Levels, then going into Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon just makes him freak out even more.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: He has no problems carding three Academia students in his appearance in Episode 100. When Yuya protests carding in general in Episode 102, Kaito responds very coldly that Academia's duelists have carded hundreds of people, so he'll card thousands of them in return.
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:In Episode 109, Kaito bails out Yuya's group from the Obelisk Force, and then tells Yuya to worry about his comrades.]]
** [[spoiler:Later in Episode 110, when Yuya is about to Duel Edo while his group is taking their leave, Kaito gives the unconscious Kurosaki a piggyback ride. It seems that Kurosaki's PowerOfFriendship speech during their Duel does have some effect on Kaito after all.]]
** [[spoiler:His speech to Yuya's group in Episode 112:]]
-->'''Kaito''': [[spoiler:"I realized it after my Duels against you and Shun. How important my comrades are, how wonderful smiles are, and how Dueling is supposed to protect these things. I'm sure he realized the same thing as well. That's why he came here, so that he can redeem himself for stealing away many smiles through Dueling. If he bravely admits the mistakes they have made, I have to do the same thing as well. I have inflicted fear upon countless Academia soldiers too."]]
* ThePowerOfFriendship: [[spoiler:Which ultimately allows him to summon Neo Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon, thanks to Sayaka's Little Fairy.]]
* ThePowerOfHate: Just like any other Resistance members.
* PragmaticHero: You can thank Academia for blowing up Heartland.
* PsychoRangers: Non-villainous example: Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon is similar to Yuya's Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, as both dragons are Xyz Monsters with 3000 ATK and 2500 DEF and they have special eyes and mechanical wings that can be activated, and both of them represent the wrath of their owners.
* TheRival: Was TheAce of the Clover Branch of Heartland Duel School, a rival to the Kurosaki siblings and Yuto's Spade Branch.
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: Does not approve of Yuya and Yuto's "Bring smiles with your Duels" philosophy.
* SixthRanger: [[spoiler:Appears to be one (unofficially) for Yuya's group, starting from Episode 109 onwards.]]
* StealthPun: Aside from "Cipher" meaning "Lightwave" or "Zero", it also has something to the word "Lu'''cifer'''".
* TookALevelInBadass: He was already poised to become the Duel Champion of Heartland, and according to Yuto and Allen he's even stronger after the invasion.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Yuto states Kaito used to be a kind and warm individual before the invasion. Well, when your homeland is razed and your family and friends are carded in front of you, it's hard to be happy.
* TookALevelInKindness: Downplayed, but he's starting to reconsider comradery after his Duel against Kurosaki back in Episode 105 and [[spoiler:restrain himself from sealing the Obelisk Force in cards.]]
* UnstoppableRage: His dueling used to have more warmth, but is now fueled by his rage and hatred for Academia. Even Yuto is not happy with his current Dueling style, and Yuya is unable to get through to him due to his heart being closed off.
* UpToEleven: He's pretty much Kurosaki with every aspect of Kurosaki's character subjected to this trope.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Seeing Yuya with Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon reminds him of Yuto in Episode 102.

Allen Kozuki is a resident of Heartland and a survivor along with his friend, Sayaka. Allen uses a Railway deck that uses Offensive tactics.
----
!!!Tropes associated with Allen:
* AnimeHair: He has very generic shounen hero hair.
* BrokenPedestal: He has one for [[spoiler:Yusho]] once considering him a teacher but now only sees him as a coward.
* ContinuityNod: During the Tag Duel against the Tyler Sisters, when Allen draws a card by the effect of Fairy Cheer Girl, her Overlay Unit covers his card in light and Allen draws it like it is a [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Shining Draw]].
* CoolTrain: He uses a Railway deck, referencing Anna Kozuki's deck.
* DishingOutDirt: The displayed Railway monsters are EARTH monsters.
* {{Expy}}: Presumably has no relation to fellow FieryRedhead [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Anna]] '''[[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL Kozuki]]'''. He does use a Railway Deck though. He is also like Guache due to having an offense-based deck and being a FieryRedhead to contrast his purple-haired, defensive partner.
* FieryRedhead: Most of his hair is red. While not particularly hot-blooded, he does get a bit upbeat during a duel.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: BrokenPedestal aside, Allen is in general a kind and welcoming guy, showing great concern for Sayaka, and making sure she doesn't overwork herself. However, he tends to be a bit abrasive with a very casual manner of speaking and isn't trustful towards the Lancers.
* MechanicalLifeforms: He uses a Railway deck, thus all of his monsters are Machine-Type monsters. He also has Limiter Removal to double the ATK of all of his Machine-Type monsters.

[[spoiler:Deconstructed in Episode 104 when Yuya attempts to be peaceful instead of being violent; he takes control of Yuya's body in order to defeat Edo.]]

* TookALevelInCynic: Yuto used to be a stoic but idealistic young man before the invasion. Ruri's monsters have a clear gender. Use the appropriate pronouns.

* DeathOfAThousandCuts: Her strategy is this. Her ace monster Lyrical Luscinia - Assembly Nightingale at best has 500 attack points. But due to its effect, she can continually attack her opponent directly slowly destroying them.
