He also spouts half-truths and non-answers to his followers and refuses to give them vital information. This was later proven to be his canon characterization, BrokenPedestal and all. * ChildSoldiers: Conversed. America and a few other nations know Remnant is different than Earth (being a DeathWorld and all), but cannot help but be upset about how young Oscar is. Unlike Ruby, he did not volunteer to be in this war, and he would not be if not for him becoming the host of Ozpin. Since Oscar is so young and inexperienced, he often faces opponents that far outmatch him, and is exposed to terrible things no one his age should experience.

!!Ozpin's Group

* AdaptationalVillainy: Downplayed. Ozpin is still heroic and has good intentions but he is far from the BigGood he first seems to be. His secret-keeping makes him manipulative, shady, and untrustworthy at best, which makes his allies fear he may sacrifice their lives for his goals. He also spouts half-truths and non-answers to his followers and refuses to give them vital information. This was later proven to be his canon characterization, BrokenPedestal and all.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:After unintentionally silencing Vale with the Relic of Choice,]] Ozpin made efforts to change his ways and become more compassionate and moral.
* BrokenPedestal: Finding out that he kept the Silver Eye's deadly side-effect and the circumstances surrounding Summer's death a secret is what finally breaks RWBY, JNPR, and the nations' trust in him. They realize they cannot trust that his motives will align with theirs and that he may sacrifice their lives if he thinks their sacrifices will help defeat Salem. Whether Ozpin actually thinks that is left ambiguous.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Ultimately he is the one who must decide to approach Alfred and ask him to accept the rest of Vale's Aura. This decision weighs heavily upon him long after the transfer is unintentionally completed.
* ConsummateLiar: Whenever Ozpin speaks about his past there is a large chance he is lying. He hides it well, but the heroes slowly learn how to tell when he is lying. When England confronts him about he immediately insinuates she is lying without missing a beat.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Even more so than in canon. Ozpin's secret-keeping habits and mysterious ways erodes the trust his followers have in him until Teams RWBY and JNPR become suspicious of his motives and agree not to tell him that Sun is Vacuo.
* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler:How his reincarnation works. He slowly erases the soul of the host and takes over their body permanently.]]
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: He gave Atlas the Relic of Creation for safekeeping. He mistakes her gleeful smirk for a shy, awestruck grin, unintentionally adds fuel to her ego and arrogance by insisting she may become the most powerful Kingdom in Remnant's history, and encourages her "new solution" ways of thinking, not knowing Brainwashing what AMillionIsAStatistic those solutions Dehumanization entail.
* Hypocrite: Ozpin often talks about working together and trusting each other while he acts extremely secretive, avoids answering questions, lies or gives half-truths, and has little trust in his followers.
* IveComeTooFar: Ozpin tries to justify his decision to by claiming too many lives have already been lost for him to stop now. In his mind, if he loses the war against Salem all the things he did and all the lives he sacrificed will be for nothing. disagree and call him out for becoming so desperate to beat Salem he will .
* MyGreatestFailure: He has two.
** When he [[spoiler:accidentally geased Vale into never being able to speak ill of him again using the Relic of Choice]]. He's regretted it ever since.
** When Salem appeared for the first time in decades, Ozpin foolishly allowed Summer Rose to go on a mission to kill the Queen of the Grimm. The whole thing was a trap to draw Summer out and have her killed.
* TheNeedsOfTheMany: His decision to leave Yang, Jaune, Ren, and Nora in Roman's hands in order to return to Haven and save the Relic of Knowledge is this in a nutshell. Unfortunately for Ozpin, his allies disagree. They save Yang and the others, but the knowledge that Ozpin would have left them to die further breaks the trust they have in him.
* PoorCommunicationKills: One thing Oz is not good at is being open with others. He keeps many secrets, including how and why Summer died and the truth behind Silver Eyes. His secret-keeping habits ultimately causes RWBY, JNPR, and the nations to mistrust him and grow suspicious of his motives.
* Pride: Despite his good intentions, Ozpin's arrogance gets the best of him multiple times. He gathers allies and armies to fight Salem but thinks he is the only one who can truly beat her. He also believes he is always right and the way he does things is the only correct path.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: His decision to give Atlas the Relic of Creation and tell her that her clearheaded "solutions" will save Remnant, helps worsen her superiority complex and arrogance and is implied to be the source of her unyielding TautologicalTemplar mindset.

* AdaptationalJerkass: It's more like "Adaptational-No-Hotness-to-Distract-Us." Qrow is perfectly in-character, but without Qrow's handsome face and raspy voice to distract readers, his brash nature and flaws are harder to ignore.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: Often ruffles Ruby's hair. He does this
* CareerEndingInjury:
* DontCallMeSir: He insists that Whitley not call him "Mr. Branwen" since it makes him feel old so he calls him "Mr. Qrow" instead.
* HeroicSacrifice: He is stabbed through the torso protecting Ruby.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: He gets a spear through the stomach while protecting Ruby from Atlas.
* TakingTheBullet: Atlas throws a spear at Ruby. Qrow jumps in the way and is impaled through his back.
* UndyingLoyalty: He is fiercely loyal to Ozpin and his cause and has his back. Even if he disagrees with Ozpin in private (like when Ozpin wanted America to complete the Aura transfer) he will support Ozpin in public. The one time that loyalty wavers is when Ozpin wants to leave Yang and JNR to die in order to save the Relic of Knowledge.

* CessationOfExistence: Not yet but
* FriendlessBackground: He did not have anyone around his age on the farm. Before Ozpin came along, he spent most of his time in the fields or reading.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: He seeks to become stronger in order to catch up to his allies and become the leader Ozpin says he is meant to be.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Ozpin told him to greet Ruby with the "You have Silver Eyes." line. Unfortunately, Ruby has lost one of those silver eyes since she last saw Ozpin.
* OnlyFriend: is the only person he can call a true friend among the group of heroes. The rest are are hesitant "friends" or acquaintances at best since they cannot trust Ozpin, and keep their distance from Oscar as a result. is the only person to see Oscar as Oscar and not as Ozpin's vessel.
* ReluctantWarrior: He develops this mindset after the horrific Transformation Institute mission. He does not want to be a fighter and does not want to be Ozpin's vessel but keeps fighting in Ozpin's war because he knows people will die if he doesn't.
* ShrinkingViolet: Oscar is quiet and socially awkward, and often prefers the company of books to the company of people. He is unused to the life of a Huntsman and thus is often overwhelmed by their way of life. He also has little confidence in his abilities compared to his companions. He is not painfully shy, but has trouble conversing with strangers and has difficulty believing in himself. This is not helped by everyone's mistrust of Ozpin, which causes them to shun Oscar as well. is the first person to approach him with the intent of getting to know him (and without wishing to speak to Ozpin), which stuns Oscar. It takes a lot of coaxing to get Oscar to talk about himself since he does not think he is very interesting. Eventually, Oscar reveals how uncomfortable he is with his new life, and how upset he is that people only seem to care about getting information from Ozpin and not getting to know Oscar as a person.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Like in canon, when Ozpin is in control. The difference is that his eyes stay gold when Ozpin is in the driver's seat instead of returning to their normal hazel.
* TakeUpMySword: He uses Ozpin's cane to fight. He hates using it because the weapon is yet another way he is not seen as Oscar, but just as Ozpin's successor. He'd like to create his own weapon but does not have the supplies or time to do so.
* TheLoad: He is afraid of being this and forcing the others to protect him in battle. Yang reassures him that is not the case.
* TookALevelInBadass: He is able to effectively hold off until Ozpin distracted him.

* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Vale's Abel. He sold out his sister to Cinder in order to save himself.
* DirtyCoward: He sold out Vale to Cinder in order to save himself.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Mantle gave Cinder Vale's location, which led to everything from America and Canada's abduction to the fall of Beacon.

* Adorkable: She is so happy to have friends...
* ForgottenFallenFriend: Subverted. Her death has lasting effects on the characters, particularly Pyrrha. America also mourns Penny months later
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: She gets them: Teams RWBY, JNPR, America, Canada, Sun, and Neptune to be exact. This is also the reason why America accepts her into the group despite her orders to watch over him. Then she dies.
* InSpiteOfANail: Despite the nations' presence in the story, Penny still dies during her fight against Pyrrha. Seeing as how none of the nations were present at the Stadium itself, it unfortunately makes sense that nothing would change.
* KillTheCutie: Pyrrha accidentally kills her as she did in canon.
* KilledOffForReal: She dies as she did in canon. [[spoiler:Penny 2.0 may have her memories but she is a different person. Penny Polendina is dead, and her Aura can never be brought back.]]
* LiteralMinded: She does not understand figures of speech or metaphors.
* NoSocialSkills: Comes with being a LiteralMinded android.

The Atlas Pilot that Weiss bribes to take her to Mistral.
* AcePilot: He performs well during the Lancer fight and flies into what is essentially a warzone to save Yang's team, all without getting a scratch on his ship.
* AscendedExtra: In canon, he dies after the Lancer fight. Here, he survives and becomes the heroes' go-to pilot for their journey.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was discharged from the military because he went against orders in order to save lives.
* FromCamouflageToCriminal: He used to be in the Atlas military until he was discharged for disobeying orders to save people. After that he used his piloting skills to ship illegal goods until Weiss came along. He's all-too happy to become the heroes' pilot as thanks for saving his life.
* HiddenDepths: He likes to draw in his spare time, and he's quite talented.
* IOweYouMyLife: His initial reason for assisting the heroes. He grows to resignedly enjoy their company and believe in their mission to save Remnant and Earth.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Nameless in the show, given the name "Sterlyn" here.

* BreakTheBadass: Salem notes she is the strongest Kingdom on Remnant and Mistral envies her strength. Mistral's betrayal and Cinder's actions broke her so badly that she would rather give up than fight nowadays.
* BrokenAce: She is the strongest nation on Remnant but can be incredibly snarky and abrasive. She has her reasons.
* CommanderContrarian: Downplayed. She argues with America more often than not and has a habit of belittling him and his ideas, but when they are in danger such as when they fight Atlas she'll put her bitterness aside to assist him. Seeing how she's stuck in America's head (which can't be beneficial to her happiness), it's understandable.
* CynicalMentor: Amber starts out as this towards America. She is prone to giving him insults on the verge of verbal abuse until CharacterDevelopment kicks in.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Vale's past is a history of pain and betrayal. [[spoiler:First Ozpin betrays, tortures, and tongue-ties her so she cannot speak ill of him, forcing her to flee her own Kingdom.]] Then Mistral betrays her. Then Cinder comes along...
* DeadpanSnarker: Often when speaking with America. She has a dry sense of humor.
* JadeColoredGlasses: Her experiences turned her bitter. She will take any chance she gets to tell America he's an idiot and he might as well stop fighting because there is no way to win.
* MysteriousPast: Her past was unclear until The Charlatan of Choice.
* NeverBeHurtAgain: It's implied that Mistral's betrayal broke her, leaving her mistrustful and suspicious of the motives of everyone she meets.
* OneWomanArmy: She ended the Great War almost by herself using
* PersonOfMassDestruction: She ended the Great War almost single-handedly
* SourOutsideSadInside: Her past (complete with multiple betrayals) led her to be suspicious, cold, mean, and critical with extreme trust issues. Doubly so after she
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In a way. Her soul merged with America's body and she now lives on as a voice in America's head.
* SuicideDare: She insults America and says he should kill himself before his enemies do. America is stunned into silence by the dare and calls Vale out for acting so cruelly, insisting that she's kinder than that.
* WeatherManipulation: Her Semblance gives her control over fire, lightning, and wind.

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: She chooses to help America (a stranger) over obeying her orders. She also gives him space instead of demanding answers, and treats him with surprising compassion upon learning his situation.
* BrokenPedestal: After hearing the full story about Ironwood's actions against the twins,
* DefectorFromDecadence: She turns against Atlas and her tyrannical regime and helps the heroes infiltrate the Transformation Institute.
* EveryoneHasStandards: She decides not to hand America over to Military HQ when she finds out he was attacked by a soldier of Atlas.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: She discarded her military ensemble beforehand and was never a villain but officially turns her back on the Atlas military and assists the heroes in invading the Transformation Institute while wearing new blue attire.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She is aloof, harsh, and cold, but opens up her home to America when he has no other place to go.
* LadyOfWar: She moves and fights with feminine grace, no matter the situation.

* DarkSecret: He left Vacuo and refused to go to Shade Academy because he is Vacuo and did not want to be forced to give up his freedom.
* IJustWantToBeFree: His reason for refusing to go to Shade Academy. If he went there, Vacuo's government (or Shade's Headmaster/Headmistress) would figure out he is Vacuo and either force him to work for the government or lock him a GildedCage to keep him safe from Salem. He wants to live his life the way he chooses, not the way others want him to.
* MacGuffinPersonReveal: He is the personification of Vacuo, the one that can retrieve the Relic hidden in Shade Academy's Vault.
* NiceGuy: He's a pretty friendly guy, as seen when he goes to talk to Canada simply because he thought he looked lonely.

* AIIsACrapshoot: She isn't evil per se, but she is willing to attack anyone she believes is threatening Alfred F. Jones and has no qualms about taking human lives.
* AntiHero: Her only mission is to protect Alfred F. Jones. Get in the way of that mission, and you will be terminated.
* BashBrothers: With America.
* BeYourself: America gives her this advice when he tells her not to try to be Penny Polendina for her old friends' sakes.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Other than America, she has trouble bonding with and caring about people. Given the choice, she would leave many of her companions to die if their survival was not beneficial to protecting Alfred F. Jones. The only exception (again, other than America) is Canada because he treated her kindly and does not expect her to be Penny Polendina. This extends to Sterlyn and Ruby as well after the former teaches her how to fly an airship and the latter helps Penny name her weapon.
* BloodKnight: She is built for combat and her first solution to most problems is to terminate the source of them.
* CallAHumanAMeatbag: She gains the habit of calling Salem's henchmen "Meatbags", displaying her utter loathing of them. It worries America a little but he lets it go since she only calls Salem's forces that.
* CameBackWrong: Penny 2.0 does not have Penny's Aura. She does have most of Penny's memories without the emotions that came with them. Because of this she is now a ruthless, logical, single-minded android that has no emotions or morals, will kill anyone who interferes with her mission, and looks like America's dead friend.
* CombatPragmatist: She has no problem with attacking enemies before they know she is there.
* TheComputerIsYourFriend: Her mission is to protect Alfred F. Jones. She will eliminate anyone who gets in the way of that mission.
* Creepy Green Eyes: She has luminescent green eyes and never blinks. They also glow in the dark.
* CreepyMonotone: She speaks in a flat, emotionless voice while discussing things such as injury and murder. That is, until she starts experiencing emotions.
* CurbStompBattle: Every battle she has been in is completely one-sided, with her coming out on top with little effort.
* DoAndroidsDream: Although Penny 2.0's "Aura Moderation Module" is offline, she develops emotions and an evolving personality.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Polendina gives Penny 2.0 upgrades to make her stronger and more combat ready (in order to increase the chances of her survival the second time around). She uses those upgrades to slaughter Polendina and his men.
* HeroesLoveDogs: She may be a literal killing machine but she adores puppies.
* LackOfEmpathy: She does not attempt to comfort America after he is brutally attacked by the soldier, nor does she have any sympathy for the enemies she kills. When it comes to America she grows out of it.
* MoralityChain: America is this to her. He is the only reason she can be considered a SociopathicHero, because without him she would not be fighting to protect Remnant and Earth. Protecting him is her only mission, and protecting Earth and Remnant is thus an extension of that mission.
* NamedWeapon: She calls her weapons Azure Sunshard despite there being no blue on them. It is implied she named them after the color of America's eyes.
* OverrideCommand: Polendina installed a kill-on-sight command for Pyrrha in Penny 2.0. It overrides all other missions in favor of Pyrrha Nikos's termination. All missions except protecting Alfred F. Jones, of course. Unfortunately, Penny's logic processes dictates that both missions align.
* Patricide: Kills her creator without an ounce of remorse because he threatened Alfred F. Jones.
* Protectorate: Protecting Alfred F. Jones is her mission. She will do anything to protect him, including kill those she perceives as the slightest threat to his safety.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Penny's eyes turn crimson when her protocol to kill Pyrrha is activated.
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: She often speaks in formal, long-worded sentences that leave most people scratching their heads as they try to understand what she is saying. America usually translates what she means into simpler terms. Justified in that Penny is a robot with an extensive vocabulary in her data-banks.
* SociopathicHero: She has no regard for human life (other than America), will kill anyone she sees as a threat with little provocation, and will even go out of her way to eliminate potential threats. Luckily America keeps her in check.
* ThatManIsDead: Justified. Penny 2.0 has Penny Polendina's looks and cataloged memories, but she is a completely separate person from Penny Polendina.
* TookALevelInKindness: A minor but noticeable shift in her character comes when she grows to care about people other than Alfred for reasons unrelated to her mission to protect him. She also learns compassion and how to comfort people when they are distressed. She's still ruthless when it comes to everyone not on her list of loved ones.
* TheUnblinking: Penny never blinks, reinforcing her robotic and seemingly emotionless nature. The only times she does blink is when she is feeling conflict or emotion.
* WalkingSpoiler: Her existence is not revealed until the end of The Depths of Deception.
