Waiting in Tarren Mill, he encounters the blue dragons Kalecgos and Tyrygosa and the mysterious young girl Anveena. Found the orphaned Thrall after the murder of his parents and raised him, intending to make him into a general that would lead the orcs into taking over Lordaeron for Blackmoore. The first paladin on Azeroth and Grand Master of the Order of the Silver Hand. Prior to the Second War, he was a student of Archbishop Alonsus Faol, but together they founded the Order of the Silver Hand when news reached Lordaeron of Stormwind's destruction by the orcish Horde during the First War. During the Second War he led his paladins into battle and rose to become one of the newly formed Alliance's greatest heroes. His title "the Lightbringer" was earned at the Battle of Blackrock Spire, given to him after the battle by General Turalyon..

Prior to the events of Warcraft III, Uther took Prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron as his apprenctice, hoping that he would grow into a benevolent and powerful paladin. Alas, eventually Arthas took a long jump down the slippery slope with the Culling of Stratholme, alienating both his mentor, Uther, and his lover, Jaina, before he went off to Northrend. After Arthas' return to Lordaeron, where he had slain his own father, Uther took it upon himself to defend the ashes of his king, kept in a magical urn. Arthas sought out the urn, so as to transport Kel'thuzad's remains, and after a heated fight, Arthas slew his former mentor. To this day, he is still remembered as one of the Alliance's greatest heroes.

Lordaeron was the largest of the human kingdoms on Azeroth. Ruled by King Terenas Menethil II, Lordaeron was the chief proponent of the Alliance. Lordaeron was also the birthplace of the Order of the Silver Hand. Unfortunately, fourteen years after victory in the Second War, the plague of undeath would ravage the kingdom of Lordaeron and Terenas would be killed by his own son, Arthas.

A large majority of the people of Lordaeron are now undead, with some among the ranks of the Forsaken. However, there are still living remnants of Lordaeron among the Alliance and the Argent Crusade.

* KnightTemplar: The Scarlet Crusade, formed after the fall of Lordaeron and believed anybody living not wearing their tabard to be an agent of the Scourge.
* LightIsGood: Of the human kingdoms the people of Lordaeron were the most religious and firmly showcased this.
* TheRemnant: The Scarlet Crusade was formed by remnants of the Silver Hand after the kingdom's fall, though it is eventually fully destroyed over the course of WorldOfWarcraft. Some paladins of the Silver Hand as well, which formed the Argent Dawn and later the Argent Crusade with other the races of Azeroth.
* StandardRoyalCourt: Terenas kept a royal court with nobles and ambassadors all coming in attendance prior to his death.

->"I will not institute quarantine without proof of your claims, ambassador! The people of Lordaeron have suffered enough without becoming prisoners in their own lands."
->Voiced by: Creator/TonyJay (Warcraft III), Earl Boen (World of Warcraft)

The king of Lordaeron and one of the primary founders of the Alliance. When Lothar brought the refugees of Stormwind with him north to Lordaeron, Terenas immediately called for all of the neighbouring kings to unite as the Alliance. After the Second War had been won, Terenas took over as its leader for years to follow. During the Third War, he ignored Medivh's prophecy of the Burning Legion's coming, dismissing him as "rambling prophet". As a plague had presumably struck the northern parts of Lordaeron, he sent his son, Prince Arthas, to investigate, who found out that an undead army, the Scourge, was behind it all. After Arthas returned from Northrend, he was killed immediately by the now corrupted Arthas, who promptly destroyed the lands he had ruled for over 50 years. Alas, he did not get to taste the swift release of death. His soul was bound within Frostmourne, alongside many others.

In Wrath of the Lich King, Terenas provides the ironic narration of the expansion's opening. He also plays a major part as a soul in the fall of the Lich King, where he taunts the Lich King that his end comes and
----
* BigGood: For the Alliance following Lothar's death.
* ChekhovsGunman: He died in Warcraft III and provided the ironic narration for Wrath of the Lich King, but beyond that, few expected him to play a role of particular importance in the present. Fast forward to the last patch of the expansion...
* CoolCrown: Wore a magnificently horned and jeweled crown in life, though its current whereabouts are unknown.
* CoolOldGuy
* DeadPersonConversation: Has one with Arthas, then much later Tirion in the final patch of Wrath of the Lich King. It's also implied he regularly talks with Arthas at other times, like the narration in the Wrath of the Lich King opening cinematic.
* DramaticIrony: His narration during the opening cinematic of Wrath of the Lich King.
* TheGoodKing: Terenas ruled wisely and is fondly remembered by all citizens of the broken kingdom, both living and dead.
* KilledOffForReal: Slain by his own son Arthas, and while his soul remained chained within Frostmourne, he's eventually released.
* NonActionGuy: According to Tides of Darkness, Terenas is by no means a capable fighter, though this has been contradicted by the now uncanon RPG and WorldOfWarcraft.
* ThePaladin: According to the RPG and WorldOfWarcraft Terenas is a paladin, contradicting his NonActionGuy status in Tides of Darkness.
* PimpedOutCape: Wore a very large furred cape as befitting a king.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Slightly arguable, as he mostly proves unreasonable when Medivh comes to him, but even then he had reasons to easily dismiss him as the rambling prophet he thought he was.

->Voiced by: Creator/MichaelMcConnohie
->Class: Paladin

----
* AFatherToHisMen: Many characters and fellow paladins imply that Uther really cared for his men.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Not only the Grand Master of the Silver Hand, but also the most powerful.

** BadassBeard
** BadassCape
** BadassGrandpa: *sigh* "I'm getting too old for this."
** BadassPreacher: He was actually a knight before he became a priest and Alonsus Faol's protégé, but he then on the onset of the Second War went full circle back to knight by becoming a paladin.
* CoolOldGuy
* DeadPersonConversation: In Wrath of the Lich King, the player character, along with Jaina or Sylvanas, has one of these with the spirit of Uther in the Halls of Reflection. It's Uther who first gives the warning that there must always be a Lich King, lest the Scourge will run rampant and out of control.
* DropTheHammer: And perhaps because of him, it became the paladin's weapon of choice.
* EscortMission: The subject of one in Warcraft II, where he exposes Alterac's treason, though the matter in which it was discovered has since been retconned.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's willing to exile Tirion for disobeying orders for an orc's sake, but he gets angry when Barthilas disrespects Tirion, who is Uther's old friend and Barthilas' superior.
* FantasticRacism: See the above quote, and the fact that in Of Blood And Honor, he rejects Tirion's argument that Eitrigg is any different from the rest of the orcs. Justified in that he has not witnessed the orcs acting in any other way than their Warcraft I and II selves.
* HealingHands
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: Didn't wear a helmet in Warcraft III, though the TidesOfDarkness novel mentions him wearing a helmet during the Second War.
* HolyHandGrenade
* HonorBeforeReason: Quite clearly adheres to this, which is also the reason Lothar chose the seemingly less experienced Turalyon rather than him as his lieutenant during the Second War. Uther's rather fine with it as he prefers not to lead and is only comfortable leading the Silver Hand because it is composed of fellow paladins.
* KilledOffForReal: Slain by Arthas in the third game, though his spirit sticks on for a while until Wrath of the Lich King.
* KnightInShiningArmor
* LightEmUp
* MagicKnight: His martial training as a knight and the spiritual training he received as a priest under Alonsus Faol served well in making him both the first and the most powerful paladin on Azeroth.
* MightyGlacier: Noted in lore to be big, strong and enduring like a bear, but somewhat lacking in speed.
* MountedCombat: During the Second War.
* NobleBigot: Is one against the orcs, as he favors exiling Tirion for trying to help Eitrigg. Justified in that he has not witnessed the orcs acting in any other way than their Warcraft I and II selves.
* OldMaster
* OldSoldier: Served from the Second War onwards, living until old age in the Third War, where he's killed by his own pupil.
* PermaStubble: Artwork of him in Warcraft II depicted him with a stubbled face.
* ThePaladin: First of them, in fact.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives one to Barthilas, angered by his disrespecting Tirion.
-->Uther: You will learn to control your tongue, junior Paladin. I have known this man for years. We saved each other's lives more than once, and stood victorious over the enemy more times than I can clearly remember. Whatever he may have done, he certainly deserves more than to be harangued by an unseasoned boy like yourself.
* RedHeadedHero: Noted in TidesOfDarkness to have flame-red hair and beard, though Warcraft II and Warcraft III depicted him with light brown hair in addition to also being greying in III.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Not in Warcraft III, unlike the regular Paladin hero unit, but he has a case of this in WorldOfWarcraft.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: In Warcraft II his name was given as Uther Lightbringer, without 'the'.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: Like all other paladins in Warcraft II.
* WhatTheHellHero: Does this to Arthas first at Stratholme, then later during their confrontation after Arthas' FaceHeelTurn.

->Class: Paladin

One of the founding members of the Order of the Silver Hand and so the first paladins of Azeroth, Turalyon was Lothar's protégé, and served as his second-in-command through the Second War. While fighting the orcs, Turalyon nonetheless struggled to reconcile them with his religious beliefs; how could the Light be all-embracing and all people essentially good while the evil of the orcish Horde existed? By the end of the Second War he finally resolved these doubts, and in turn led the Alliance Expedition into Draenor, the orc homeworld. There Turalyon helped to save Azeroth from destruction again, though he was thought lost when Draenor was destroyed. He was discovered to have survived in The Burning Crusade; while not present in the game, his son, a half-elf paladin, was discovered alive in the remnants of Draenor.

* DualWielding: Picks up Lothar's broken sword during the Battle of Blackrock Spire and dual wields it in conjunction with his hammer when he fights the remnants of the Horde at the Dark Portal.

In the former case, it's particularly out of fear that Alleria will ultimately get herself killed in her reckless crusade against them.
* FantasticRacism: His epiphany that allows him to fight at his full potential with the orcs is that, because they're not from Azeroth, they're not part of the Holy Light.
* FrontlineGeneral: Following Lothar's example, Turalyon leads from the front and can often be found in the thick of the fighting.

->Eligor Dawnbringer: "Let me let you in on a little secret, Commander. The power of the Ashbringer came from the man who would wield it... I was there, Commander. I watched him burn legions of undead in righteous fire before he would even unsheathe the blade. Alas, your grasp on history is... lacking."
->Class: Paladin

High-ranking member of the Silver Hand, at the battle of Blackrock Spire during the Second War, he encountered an orc warlock wielding a powerful dark orb, which mangled his hand when he tried to pick it up after the warlock's death. Many years later, as the Third War approached, he and a group of allies met and discussed the use of the orb against the potential undead threat. While Issilien attempted to destroy it, the orb absorbed the Light and was purified, healing Alexandros' hand when he tried to touch it. He then took the crystal to Ironforge, where Magni Bronzebeard forged the sword Ashbringer.

Once he returned, however, the Scourge had already taken over Lordaeron, and so he led the remnants of the Silver Hand against the Scourge. Wielding the Ashbringer, Alexandros became legendary for the number of undead he slew, leaving only ashes behind him. Tragedy struck however, as his oldest son, Renault Mograine, thinking he's the unfavorite of the family, was manipulated by Balnazzar (in the guise of Dathrohan) into leading his father into a trap, before killing him with his own sword. Kel'thuzad eventually raised him as the mightiest death knight the Scourge had ever seen, though he was slain again, this time by his other son, Darion Mograine, when he came to Naxxramas in search of his father.
----
* Badass: He did not gain renown just by wielding one of the most powerful swords in the franchise. As Eligor Dawnbringer himself said: The power of the Ashbringer comes from the one wielding it.
** BadassBeard: Had a fierce red beard to match his hair.
** BadassBoast: During his LastStand against his undead ambushers.
--->"Tell your master that a thousand of his minions will not suffice! I will deliver you all... And when I am done I will stand... AGAINST A THOUSAND MORE!"
** BadassCape: Wore a long blue cape into battle.
* BerserkButton: Harming or letting Darion get harmed causes him to fly into a frothing rage.
* BFS: The Ashbringer in the game is a big sword with a quite broad blade. It turns even bigger after its corruption.
* CameBackWrong: Raised from the dead by Kel'thuzad as one of the Four Horsemen and the Scourge's most powerful death knight, but he's eventually slain by his son Darion.
* CoolSword: The Ashbringer is one of the most iconic Cool Swords in the franchise, though not as much as Frostmourne.
* DarkIsNotEvil: The Warrior tier 3 set from classic WorldOfWarcraft was initially stated to be a set of armor forged for him when he led the Scarlet Crusade, though this was later retconned into him never wearing it while alive. To elaborate, the set has a very Death Knight-ish appearance.
* DropTheHammer: Wielded a large hammer during the Second War.
* Et Tu, Renault?: Reacted with a great deal of sorrow and disappointment as he was stabbed in the back by his son Renault.
* FieryRedhead: Matching his hair color, he's fierce and short-tempered.
* HairTriggerTemper: He has a very short fuse and is prone to exploding in anger, especially when Darion is harmed.
* HealingHands: As a paladin, he's supposedly capable of using the Light to heal himself and others, but it's subverted on the one occasion where he's seen trying: After picking up the orb that would eventually form the Ashbringer's core, he's unable to heal his mangled hand.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: Never seen wearing a helmet into battle.
* HolyHandGrenade: A number of characters remember him bringing down the wrath of the Light on the undead before ever drawing his sword.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Stabbed InTheBack by his own son Renault with the Ashbringer.
* KilledOffForReal: He's killed twice by his own sons, but his spirit remains around for a while before finally being freed as the Lich King's death.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Despite his fiery nature, he was also kind and honorable. Even Tirion himself praised him for the purity of his soul.
* LightEmUp: Even without the Ashbringer in his hands, Alexandros himself was quite capable of using the Light to slay his foes.
* MagicKnight: As a paladin, he's quite capable of blending Light with martial prowess.
* MasterSwordsman
* NamedWeapons: The Ashbringer was named so because of how it left only the ashes of the undead it killed in its wake.
* OffingTheOffspring: In the Ashbringer quest and comic, he kills Renault from beyond the grave.
* OneManArmy: Has a reputation as one, due to the Ashbringer.
* ThePaladin
* PapaWolf: Very protective of his sons, especially Darion.
* ParentalFavoritism: While he loved both of his sons, to the outside it seemed like he clearly showed favoritism to his younger son Darion compared to his older son Renault.
* ParentsAsPeople: Sure, he loves both of his sons, but he shows clear ParentalFavoritism towards Darion, causing Renault to develop into a WellDoneSonGuy in an attempt to gain his respect. Balnazzar in Dathrohan's body uses this to manipulate Renault into killing him.
* PlayingWithFire: Noted for his burning of undead legions in holy fire, both by his own power and through the Ashbringer. As a death knight, he also bathed his foes in flames.
* RedBaron: Was named the Ashbringer after the sword he wielded.
* RetCon: Several, either concerning him or his sword. He personally started out as the betrayed Highlord of the Scarlet Crusade, which was once a pure organisation. This was later retconned into the Scarlet Crusade only existing after his death in the Ashbringer comic, as it led to the split of the Order of the Silver Hand into the Argent Dawn and the Scarlet Crusade, the latter of which was never pure.
* TragicHero: Alexandros' greatest flaw, his ParentalFavoritism, turns out to be his ultimate downfall as his son Renault turns against him.

->"The only good non-human is a dead non-human."
->Class: Dark Knight

Grand Marshal Othmar Garithos was a human supremacist and noted racist with a fierce hatred for all non-humans, and a special hatred reserved for elves in particular. When Lordaeron fell during the Third War, leadership of the broken remnants of Lordaeron's army fell upon his shoulders. He managed to successfully defend southern Lordaeron and take back Dalaran from the Scourge, but at the same time cost the Alliance the aid of the blood elves when he tried to execute Kael'thas and his men. He was killed by Varimathras on orders from Sylvanas, after having previously allied with each other to take back Lordaeron's capital city.
----
* AntiHero: He's a quite despicable person, but is fighting the Scourge to save his homeland regardless.
* AnAxeToGrind: Wielded a large double-headed axe into battle.
* AssholeVictim: No one doubts Sylvanas' motives for wanting him dead weren't anything but malevolent, but it's hard feel sorry for him after he threw the Kael'thas and the blood elves under the bus.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Leader of the Alliance remnants in Lordaeron and a nigh unstoppable fighter in his own right.
* Badass: Despite being a thoroughly unpleasant individual, he is quite the monster in combat.
** BadassMustache: It ends up becoming memetic through the traits of Tresdin, the Legion Commander who uses his character model.
** FourStarBadass: His competence as a general is debatable, but his competence as a frontline fighter is not.
* BlueBlood: Inherited the title of baron from his father.
* CoolHelmet: Wears a rather fancy winged helmet.
* CutLexLuthorACheck: Reclaiming Lordaeron would've been accomplished much easier if Garithos didn't go out of his way to send his non-human soldiers and generals on suicide missions. Then there's going out of his way to exterminate the Blood elves. Somewhat averted with Sylvanas, as when he realizes her forces outnumber his, he agrees to an EnemyMine.
* CutsceneIncompetence: Dies easily for a tank unit with an ability to turn invulnerable to magic.
* EnemyMine: Realizing that they cannot take the Capital City on their own, Garithos reluctantly agrees to team up with Sylvanas. She ends up backstabbing and having him killed when they've won, despite her agreeing to leave Lordaeron to him.
* TheExtremistWasRight: Kael'Thas eventually became an egotist mana addict who willingly dealt with a demon lord, instigating events that could have possibly lead to the destruction of all Azeroth. However its generally agreed Garithos decisions damned Kael and forced him into the desperate situations he was faced with.
* FantasticRacism: When it comes to racists in Warcraft, this guy is probably one of the more infamous examples.
* FrontlineGeneral: Many things can be said about Garithos, but he's no coward, leading his forces into battle himself.
* FinalSolution: His on-click quotes suggest it to be a goal of his to purge all non-humans from Lordaeron after reclaiming it. He certainly gives it a try when he orders Kael'thas and his soldiers to be executed.
* GeneralRipper: While in charge of the Lordaeronian remnants in the south, he's very focused on the non-humans in his own ranks and goes out of his way to persecute them, eventually leading to his attempted mass execution of Kael'thas and his elves.
* HateSink: With his massive Jerkassery and attempts to execute the then-sympathetic Kael'thas and his people, his role in the game is basically to make the player hate him as much as possible.
* HealingHands: Used Holy Light to heal the soldiers under his command.
* HolyHandGrenade: Capable of calling upon the Light to smite his undead foes.
* Jerkass: Towards non-humans at least. He seems more amiable towards his fellow humans, but we don't really get to see it before he is killed.
* KilledOffForReal: After being killed by Varimathras and then eaten by ghouls, he is certainly not coming back.
* KnightTemplar: Views the non-human races as evil savages unworthy to live in Lordaeron and will jump at the chance to enforce his views.
* LanternJawOfJustice: Subverted. While even Varian himself would be jealous of that magnificently chiseled chin, and he is fighting to save Lordaeron, he's a despicable Jerkass who tries to execute some of his own troops.
* LightningBruiser: Fast, hard-hitting and an absolute tank in combat.
* LightEmUp: Capable of wielding the Light to heal allies and strengthen their armor, as well as to smite undead.
* LightIsNotGood: Despite the name of his custom unit and the color of the armor he wears, he utilizes paladin spells in combat, but does not really act in the manner expected of a Light-wielder, to put it mildly.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Wielded a larged lion-faced shield into combat, though it ultimately failed to protect him from Varimathras.
* MountedCombat: Rides a horse into battle, which probably attributes to his LightningBruiser status.
* TheNeidermeyer: Extremely dismissive of the non-human soldiers under his command, and tries to have Kael'thas and his men killed when he returns from battle to find them working with naga. He seems more amiable towards human soldiers, but we don't really get to see it before he is killed.
* OneHandedZweihander: He wields a full-sized battleaxe in one hand.
* ThePaladin: In Warcraft III he uses the custom class Dark Knight, half of whose skillset is based on the Paladin hero unit.
* SuperMode: Able to use the Mountain King ability Avatar which makes him much more powerful and immune to spells.
* TheSouthpaw: Due to his unit model being based upon the Knight, he wielded his axe in his left hand as many other units in Warcraft III did.
* TragicBigot: According to AskCdev, when asked about Garithos past, he fought the Horde during the Second War in Quel'Thalas when it was razed, but while he was doing so, his village got destroyed by a detachement of orcs and his family killed. This led to Garithos deciding that the elves diverted forces away from the Alliance's true goal: the defense of humanity alone.
* UriahGambit: Purposefully sent Kael'thas and the Blood Elves on suicide missions ultimately forcing them to enlist the aid of the Naga against the Scourge.
* YouAreInCommandNow: After most of Lordaeron's military command was killed and the Silver Hand was fighting on a seperate front in Lordaeron, he was left in charge of many of the remnants.
