!!Germany & German Civil War
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nazi_flag.png]]

The strongest and most powerful nation the world has ever known... Or at least, so it seems. In reality, victory over the Soviet Union has only delayed the inevitable for the Reich: Tensions between the SS and the Wehrmacht are higher than ever, even as the SS itself dissolves to infighting between the Heydrich and Himmler cliques. The economy is at a standstill, the officer corps is overblown and useless, the navy is over budget yet under effeciency, and Hitler nearing his deathbed with no clear successor in sight. All while a mysterious string of assassinations rocks the corrupt bureaucracy, spreading fear and panic. It would truly take a miracle to bring the evil state back from the brink...
----
* AmbiguousSituation: It is never revealed who is actually behind the series of assassinations against the most heinous criminals of the Nazi regime, ranging from Oskar Dirlewanger to Josef Mengele. Is it the result of Heydrich and Himmler trying to kill off each other's support base? The Wehrmacht taking matters into their own hands to weaken SS influence across Germany? A plot by Bormann to increase panic and give himself an excuse to seize power? Hans Oster initiating phase one of his plan to dismantle the Nazi regime from the inside? Or is it really all just the work of highly skilled Polish underground resistance fighters, possibly aided by the Toronto Accords?
* CivilWar: After Hitler's death, the Nazi Party power struggle will almost always escalate into civil war (unless the player is skillful enough and makes sufficient compromises to avoid it, and even then, success is highly reliant on luck). The three primary contending factions in the civil war are the German government (gathering most of the Nazi party government, led by whomever emerged victorious from the power struggles), the Schutzstaffel Ordensstaat (the forces of the fanatical Nazi paramilitary Schutzstaffel under Himmler), and the Emergency Wehrstaat (a military junta of Wehrmacht officials led by Manstein). As the civil war continues, resistance movements in occupied nations will seize the opportunity to launch uprisings, and if the civil war drags on, the German Resistance can gain enough support to launch an uprising, establishing their own contender dubbed People's Germany — and potentially quickly snowballing against the exhausted other factions.
* TheCoup: If the Nazi Party power struggle becomes too excessive, the Wehrmacht or the SS paramilitary can coup the government to impose order (leading the player down the Emergency Wehrstaat or the Schutzstaffel Ordensstaat). The coups will almost guarantee the outbreak of the German Civil War.
* FascistButInefficient: Germany's economy is not in good shape, thanks to all the wars and the continuous war in the east against a massive partisan insurgency. In addition, since they're not invading new countries any more they can't keep looting them, and they're boycotted by the west in terms of trade.
* PleaseSelectNewCityName: The city of Leningrad was renamed Adolfsburg after its incorporation into the Reich proper.
* SuccessionCrisis: After Hitler's death, the Nazi Party leadership falls into a vicious power struggle between Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Göring, Albert Speer, Martin Bormann and Heinrich Himmler.
* VillainTeamUp: During the power struggle to determine Hitler's successor, Albert Speer and Joseph Goebbels form a power-sharing arrangement against their common enemy Heinrich Himmler. Bormann can also gain the support of either Himmler or the Werhmacht, and even both if he plays his cards right.

!!''UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler''
----
* KingOnHisDeathbed: Due to his liver cancer, Hitler is not long for this world. Soon after the game begins, he'll die, setting into motion a bloody power struggle within the NSDAP.

[[folder:Greater German Reich]]
The rightful government of the Reich, retaining the flag of Hitler's regime. It is led by whoever emerges victorious in the power struggle for the senate, be it Goebbels, Speer, Göring, Bormann, or the elected Council leader. Their generals consist of anyone who doesn't have either the 'Wermacht Sympathies' or 'Schutzstaffel Officer' traits, drawing in those who are generally more loyal to National Socialism than the Werhmacht or the SS, such as Hermann Hoth, Alfred Jodl, Gottard Heinrici, Hans Krebs, and Wilhelm Keitel.
----
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: To the point where you can almost rank each potential Führer from most to least evil, with the warmongering and fanatical Goebbels being the worst, and the reformist, Holocaust-halting Göring being the best.

!!''Joseph Goebbels''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_joseph_goebbels.png]]
----
* PrinciplesZealot: Even by the standards of the other Nazi elites, Goebbels is very fanatical and bloodthirsty. He sincerely believes in the principles of National Socialism and is dead-set on taking the Final Solution further than anyone else sans Himmler and Heydrich. If he becomes Führer, it's shown that he has far greater ambitions than Hitler and even less restraint.
* PropagandaMachine: Having long envisioned animation as an important tool of propaganda, once he becomes Führer, Goebbels will expand the Deutsche Zeichentrickfilme, providing them with the resources they need to preach National Socialism to the German youth.
* PublicExecution: One of Goebbels' first acts, after declaring the Reich's honorary Aryans 'subhumans disguised as Germans' and revoking their right of survival, is to execute Emil Maurice (Hitler's former chauffeur, whose great-grandfather was a Jew) live on television.
* WarHawk: Goebbels believes in the doctrine of Totaler Krieg (''Total War''), according to which the Reich must be in a constant military struggle with the corrupt world. During his inauguration ceremony as Führer, Goebbels announces Totaler Krieg on the Toronto Accord, and tells them to 'enjoy their last days on this Aryan Earth', and will soon after dedicate the entire Reich towards an expansionist war against the United States.

!!''Albert Speer''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_albert_speer.png]]
----
* MegaCorp: Speer forms the Alldeutsche Baufirma, a corporation designed to function as Germany's go-to construction contractor. All current and future government public projects will be contracted to this company, with material firms required to cooperate when the company requests.
* {{Nepotism}}: Speer appoints his son Albert Jr., who has not even finished his education, as a secretary in the Alldeutsche Baufirma, in order to prepare for a time when the father finally decides to hand his corporate empire to his son.

!!''Hermann Göring''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_hermann_goering.png]]
----
* PragmaticVillainy: Göring is a greedy opportunist whose concern for any ideology, including Nazism, is much lower than his desire for wealth and power. As such, in order to maintain his own position, he has no qualms about pulling back on some of the excesses of Nazi Germany in order to keep it, and himself, afloat. He's the only real pragmatist in the upper echelons of the NSDAP.
* {{Realpolitik}}: Göring will seek a détente with the Toronto Accord in order to avoid conflicting with the United States.

!!''Martin Bormann''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_martin_bormann.png]]
----
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Soon after coming into power, Bormann can fabricate a series of documents detailing an assassination plot against Hitler, in order to give himself an excuse to purge his rivals and solidify his power base. This eventually comes back to bite him, as the evidence of his forgery is brought to light, resulting in many important figures calling him to resign as Führer.
* StateSec: Bormann creates his own personal death squads to silence all opposition to his regime.
* {{Thoughtcrime}}: Subverted. If Bormann goes down the rather ham fisted path of claiming that Hitler was murdered by traitors as an excuse to purge his rivals, he forms the "Committe of National Socialist Thought," giving them power to punish "Non-National Socialistic thoughts." But instead of acting as a thought police, it's just another tool for him to gain power, as "Non-National Socialistic thoughts" include any doubts that the Fuhrer was killed.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Schutzstaffel Ordensstaat]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ss_flag.png]]
The result of the SS not being placated or disarmed during the power struggle, the Schutzstaffel Ordensstaat seeks to create a Germany where every aspect of life is dominated by the SS, much like Gotenland or Banat. Their defectors consists of anyone who has 'Schuttzstaffel Officer' trait, bringing in infamous names such as Otto Skorzeny, Sepp Dietrich, Paul Hausser, and even [[Film/{{Downfall}} Felix Steiner and Hermann Fegelein]]. Many of their generals are notable more for their fanaticism and war crimes than their actual talent as generals. While it can be formed peacefully without the civil war, such an event requires the Wehrmacht to willingly submit to the SS, an outcome so unrealistic is has a mere five percent chance of success.
----
* TheEmpire: While every form of the Reich generally fits the bill, the SS gets special mention for being able to literally name themselves the 'Aryan Empire.'
* ItsAllAboutMe: While it's quite difficult for an entire organization to pull this trope off, the SS manages to get it done, by specifically naming their nation, should they emerge victorious, as 'SS-Ordensstaat Germania,' as if Germany proper is just another colony of the SS, like Banat or Gotenland, rather than the other way around.

!!''Heinrich Himmler''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_heinrich_himmler.png]]
----
* BigBrotherIsWatching: One of the first actions Himmler takes in his national focus tree after coming to power is to begin surveillance on all Germans, and numerous focuses in his tree expands his national surveillance even further.
* BookBurning: Once in power, Himmler will classify all Nazi literature as official documents and ban all kinds of non-governmental books, which he sees as a potential propaganda tool of Judeo-Bolshevism. Soon after this decree is issued, members of the SS Youth will storm people's houses and burn all such illegal books.
* CulturePolice: After coming to power, Himmler launches a second [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleichschaltung Gleichschaltung]] that tries to create a unified Aryan cultural identity by massacring dissidents and creating extremely draconian cultural regulations. Even intellectual environments like mathematics and science are purged of "Jewishness" and "Aryanized" into new and twisted forms.
* DystopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Himmler believes in a very extreme form of Aryan supremacism, and also believes in using extreme totalitarianism to forcibly steer the nation towards his ideals. As such, should Himmler come to power, he will create a nightmarish nation that is even more totalitarian, oppressive, and supremacist than Hitler's Reich.
* TheCaligula: Himmler can literally gain the 'insane' trait, which allows him to form the 'Aryan Empire,' with itself as it's first emperor.
* {{Thoughtcrime}}: One of Himmler's pet projects tries to control the thoughts of individual Aryans and force them to train their thoughts to fully reject all ideas planted by the Reich's enemies. Violation of this pattern of thinking is considered a "loss of Aryaness" and will be subjected to punishment from the Schutzstaffel.

!!''Josias zu Waldeck und Pyrmont''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_josias_von_waldeck_und_pyrmont.png]]
----
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Compared to Himmler, Heydrich and Lammers, Waldeck-Pyrmont is the most 'moderate' leader among the SS, though that's an absurdly low bar.
* NaziNobleman: He is both a high-ranking member of the SS and the head of the Princely House of Waldeck-Pyrmont, something that comes up in a few of his focuses.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Emergency Wehrstaat]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_junta.png]]
The result of allowing the SS to hold too much influence over the Reich, or else, the state of affairs being so chaotic that the military deems only themselves able to stabilize the situation, the Emergency Wehrstaat, while filled to the brim with hardcore Nazis, is also the faction that is most likely to care more about functioning government and military supremacy than ideology. Defectors to their side include anyone with the 'Wermacht Sympathizer' trait, including big names such as Erich von Manstein, Erwin Rommel, Heinz Guderian, and [[{{Film/Valkyrie}} Claus von Stauffenberg]], which just so happens to coincide with the most skilled and talented generals the Reich has to offer. While they can seize power without plunging the nation into civil war, to do so requires them to fully disarm the SS, and Himmler isn't going to take that lying down 85% of the time.
----
* MilitaryCoup: The entire reason they exist.

!!''Franz Halder''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_franz_halder.png]]
The former chief of staff of the OKW, he seeks to recreate the old Nazi regime as accurately as possible, though with far more military control over political matters.
----
* MeetTheNewBoss: Halder seeks to maintain as much of the old regime as possible, while keeping the Heer in power.

!!''Friedrich Olbricht''
An important member of the reserve army, Olbricht wants to turn Germany into a Prussia-style army with a state, caring little for the ideology of National Socialism.
----

!!''Hans Speidel''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_hans_speidel.png]]
----
* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Although he is still a fascist, Speidel does not believe in the Nazis' racial purity theories and prefers to turn Germany into an orthodox fascist state, like Mussolini's Italy, and repeal the Nuremberg Laws.

!!''UsefulNotes/ErwinRommel''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_erwin_rommel.png]]
----
* {{Cincinnatus}}: Rommel comes to power by overthrowing Hans Speidel in a coup. Once he thinks he has fulfilled his duty of saving the Reich, he'll step down and hand power back to the restored NSDAP under Hermann Esser, because he is not interested in ruling.
* EvilReactionary: Rommel is a hardline Hitlerist who seek to reverse Hans Speidel's reforms and return Germany to how it used to be under Adolf Hitler.

!!''Hans Oster''
[[quoteright:156:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/twr_hans_oster.png]]
The only high ranking Nazi who isn't actually a Nazi, Oster, in seizing power, has successfully worked within the system to destroy the system, bringing in a new, democratic age for Germany free from the stains of National Socialism.
----
* ClearTheirName: One of Oster's first actions after taking power is to rehabilitate Henning von Tresckow, who was executed for treason, murder and espionage after his failed 1948 coup, declaring him one of Germany's first 'righteous among the nation'.
* InternalReformist: Oster seeks to lead Germany back onto the correct path by releasing political prisoners, forming a cabinet of like-minded people (including a social democrat) and restore the suspended constitution.
* RageWithinTheMachine: Despite being a general in the Wehrmacht, Oster has no love for Nazism and has worked tirelessly to free Germany from the brainwashing and tyranny of the Nazi regime. His path is the only way for Germany to become a democracy outside of the People's Germany rebellion.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:People's Germany]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peoples_germany_flag_imperfect.png]]
A rag-tag group of unarmed, unsupported, and often at odds with each other rebels and milita who only rise up after the civil war drags on for too long, giving time for the people to become disillusioned with National Socialism. They have no unified ideology: Communists, monarchists, and democrats alike stand united to purge the Nazi scum from their homeland. This does, however, lead to significant infighting, even before they achieve victory...
----
* DarkHorseVictory: People's Germany can only appear at the first place if the German civil war goes on for too long, allowing more radical ideologies like communism to grow when Nazism is increasingly discredited by the drawn-out civil war. Then after that, the rebels must defeat the Wehrmacht, the SS and the German goverment itself in order to assert their control over Germany.
* DefectorFromDecadence: Many members of the anti-Nazi resistance are former members of the NSDAP who became disillusioned with how they ran Germany, and defected to the side of the resistance.
* FullCircleRevolution: It is completely possible for People's Germany to become a highly authoritarian socialist state under leaders like Willi Stoph or Erich Mielke, or to slide back into a different form of Nazism under Otto Strasser.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The leadership of People's Germany spans the entire political spectrum from communists to ex-Nazis, and it can adopt nearly every ideology in the game.
* LaResistance: People's Germany is made up of German socialists, democracy supporters and disillusioned fascists, all united in their desire to see the Nazi regime fall.

Many of their generals are notable more for their fanaticism and war crimes than their actual talent as generals.
* TheRevolutionWillNotBeVilified: Though People's Germany has a few evil paths, it has far more morally upstanding paths and clearly holds the moral high ground over Nazi Germany overall.

!!''Erich Mielke''

----
* EmergencyAuthority: Soon after taking power, Mielke gives himself sweeping emergency powers, apparently to carry out reconstruction and restore stability. At the end of his political tree, he declares a permanent state of emergency, effectively turning him into Germany's new dictator.
* ThePurge: After becoming Chairman of Germany, Mielke will start an extensive process of denazification, which ends up to be little more than an excuse for him to purge everyone else.

!!Reichskommissariate and SS-Ordensstaaten
----
* EvilColonialist: Essentially every single German colony state is the quintessential example of this trope. At the very best, the Untermensch are treated as slaves, constantly reminded of Aryan superiority over their race, and allowed to reproduce only to produce more workers and laborers. At worst, SS squads will roam the countryside, executing entire villages on sight, while bombers make nightly trips to bomb slavic civilization into nonexistence, all to make room for Aryan settlement.
* WeAREStrugglingTogether: Thankfully averted. Nazi rule is just ''so'' tyrannical, that it can make people divided by religion, race, and ideology unite against them, at least until they're fully kicked out.

The most stable of all the German Reichskommissariats, Ostland actually has a chance of not collapsing, so long as the civil war is averted in Germany. This is in large part due to the relatively leniant occupation (at least, in comparison to the other colonies), and the existing German Baltic minority.
----

Known as 'The Slave State,' Reichskommissariat Moskowien is an unholy and unstable abomination, with German control barely held together by a recreated Stormtrooper organization, which is favored over the military or SS to put down resistance.
----
* LesCollaborateurs: Reichskommissariat Moskowien is forced to collaborate with numerous native Russians who mostly serve as police officers and factory inspectors. However, their loyalty is questionable, and many might be plotting against their masters.

The Black Pearl of the Reich, Crimea is a name reduced to the history books. In three years time, Reinhard Heydrich has managed to almost completely Germanize his personal kingdom, turning it into a tourism hotspot and economic powerhouse. His ambitions, however, do not stop at merely serving the reich to the best of his ability...
----

* AllohistoricalAllusion: Gotenland can adopt a doctrine known as "Totenhand"; it is based on the Soviet [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Hand Dead Hand]] automatic nuclear retaliation system.
* CrapsaccharineWorld: Gotenland is a stable and profitable component of the Reich with a flourishing tourist economy. However, behind this stability is Heydrich's utter ruthlessness in Germanizing Crimea and stomping out resistance.

* CultOfPersonality: As ruler of Gotenland, Heydrich had created a major cult of personality surrounding himself and Hitler.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Both Himmler and Heydrich have fiercely entrenched themselves in their own visions for how the SS should function going forward, and it is becoming clear that only one shall prove to come out on top.

[[folder:SS-Ordensstaat Banat]]
A state formed from the German occupation of the Banat region. Instead of giving the territory to Romania, Hungary, Croatia, or even back to Serbia, Hitler decided to turn it, along with Gotenland, into the first SS-Ordensstaat, as an experiment to determine if the Schutzstaffel could run things any better than a normal Reichskommissariat. They can't.

[[folder:SS-Ordensstaat Burgund]]
An artificial, man made state that comprises of most if not all of German occupied France, and even some portions of German occupied Belgium and Switzerland. It can be formed by Speer, Goebbels, Göring, and Bormann, and its creation is the only way to prevent the SS from rising up and starting the civil war, other than trying to disarm them.
----
* ReassignedToAntarctica: Göring and many others view the creation of Burgundy as a way to give Himmler a personal fiefdom to excercise his insanity without restraint, so he is prevented from interfering with German politics, specifically on the matter of Hitler's successor.

* VestigialEmpire: Britain, once the most powerful nation on Earth, is not doing particularly well by 1952. The defeat at Dunkirk caused an international humiliation, hastening the fall of the British Raj, and bringing the power of the empire seriously into question. The United States now dominates western geopolitics, and the dominions such as Canada and Australia have become de facto independent, and are just as much under American control as British.

* PoliceState: Under Beria's leadership, the NKVD's power greatly grew in the rump USSR. They have been actively purging 'enemies of the state', and the streets of Perm run red with blood from these summary executions.
* ShockingDefeatLegacy: Due to the trauma of defeat in the Second World War and the ensuing chaotic political situation in the Union, all Soviet politicians have radicalised to some degree. Not only is their great nation obliterated, but most of their citizens live in literal racial slavery and are being actively exterminated by the Germans. This resulted in them distancing themselves away from Marxism-Leninism in favour of various other ideologies.

* DirtyCommunists: Konev's Ultravisionary Marxism is characterized by its infinitely expanded state power, and Konev goes even further than Stalin in terms of ruthlessness.
* GeneralRipper: Though the specifics of his personality aren't revealed, what can be gleamed from the revealed focus trees show Konev to be a paranoid warmonger with a bloodthirsty desire to crush all enemies of the Soviet Union.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: After the German-Soviet War, Konev has radicalized to such a point that his brutality, totalitarianism, and ruthlessness rival that of the Nazis.
* HistoricalVillainUpgrade: The real Konev did have a tendency to use extreme violence (in World War II and the 1956 Hungarian Revolution) and to wholly negate normal judicial procedures (as what happened in Beria's trial). In this timeline, the trauma of the USSR's defeat in the Second World War further radicalised him, turning him into a much more bloodthirsty, unstable and genocidal person.
* NukeEm: When reunifying Russia, Konev's alternative option to bombing Siberia with chemical weapons is to bomb them with nuclear bombs instead.
* PressXToDie: Konev's deep research tree is extremely hazardous, and some focuses will very often result in total collapse of the Soviet Union.

----
* PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny: The name ''Republic of Korea'' is no more than a sham, as Syngman Rhee rules the country with almost autocratic power.

!!''Syngman Rhee''
----
* ThePurge: If Rhee successfully crushes the 1952 protests, he'll consolidate his power over Korea by purging the military, the departments, the communists, and optionally the conservatives and liberal democrats as well.

!!''Pak Hon-yong''
----
* AllohistoricalAllusion: If Pak's Jucheists come into power, he'll implement the exact same policies that Kim Il-sung did in real life UsefulNotes/NorthKorea, even though Kim himself disappeared long ago after the defeat of Communist China.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flag_of_vietnam_1.png]]

----
* AllohistoricalAllusion: Just like in real life, Vietnam is invaded and can be divided in two by a foreign superpower seeking to set up their own right-wing puppet government. The difference is that in ''TWR'', the Nationalist Chinese-backed Vietnamese Republic is located in the northern half of Vietnam (if the Chinese managed to gain enough during their invasion to force the legitimate Vietnamese government into signing an armistice), while the US-backed Republic of Vietnam was located in the south.
* BalkanizeMe: If neither side wins the China-Vietnam war, Vietnam will be divided in two between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the south and the Vietnamese Republic (a Chinese puppet) in the north.
* GovernmentInExile: Liu Shaoqi's Communist Chinese government has resided in Vietnam since being defeated by the Nationalists in the Chinese Civil War. When Nationalist China invades Vietnam, Marshal Ye Jianying will lead a group of Chinese veterans to aid Vietnam in retaining its independence.

!!''Hồ Chí Minh''
----
* AllohistoricalAllusion: After Hồ Chí Minh's death, the Vietnamese government can choose to rename a city after him, but in this timeline, said city is Haiphong instead of Saigon like in real life.
* ChummyCommies: Hồ Chí Minh only seeks to free the Vietnamese people from imperialist oppressors, and protect and preserve the liberty that many of his countrymen have died for.
