In "Scars", he and Michonne are bound and tortured by Jocelyn and her children. Finally, in "The Calm Before", he, Michonne, Carol, and Yumiko are held by the Whisperers for a short amount of time and eventually released by Alpha herself.

Daryl then lost his crossbow and bike to Dwight, a member of the Saviors, and formed a murderous rivalry with him as the groups began to clash. Though he expected to be killed as punishment, Daryl was horrified to see Glenn instead be murdered and has blamed himself ever since. Daryl was then taken hostage at the Sanctuary, tortured by Dwight for an extended period of time, but refused to bend and join the Saviors as Negan wished. Thanks to assistance from Sherry, Daryl was able to escape the Sanctuary and rejoin the group as they go to war with the Saviors. Embittered by his imprisonment and torture, Daryl opined for total annihilation of the Saviors, clashing with Rickís approach that was eventually going to fail, as it was only a matter of time before they get out anyway with Eugene working for Negan, mounted an attack on the Sanctuary. At the end of the war, Daryl disagreed with Rickís decision to spare Negan and plotted with Maggie to one day kill Negan.

After Rick seemingly sacrifices himself to destroy a massive walker herd, During this time, he desperately tries to find Rick's body or evidence of his survival for closure. At some point he does find a dog for company; however, it can be presumed that Daryl spent a vast majority of the six years living in the woods completely by himself.
** It's partially subverted because he encounters Michonne looking for Rick's body on the riverbank about eight months after Rick blows up the bridge. Later the next day, he helps her find Judith and the other missing children who were kidnapped by Michonne's old friend Jocelyn and her group. Also, Daryl did tell Carol where to find him if she wanted to see him. However, dialogue between Henry and Daryl suggests that Carol hasn't seen much of Daryl after the bridge explosion. As such, Daryl spends many years completely cut off from his friends and allies who care about him.
