* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Was frustrated with being in her sister Cassandra’s shadow. She gets thrust into the spotlight [[spoiler: after Cassandra is murdered]]. Needless to say, this isn’t at all how she wanted it to happen, and she also has difficult coping with the mental stresses of leadership.
* BunkerWoman: Becomes this at the hands of Campbell in the season finale.

* TheChainsOfCommanding: Is faced with many difficult decisions over the course of the season.

* MoreDeadlyThanTheMale: Probably the most deadliest female character on the show so far, as she decides to execute Dewey when Grizz is unable to.

* IllGirl: Has a heart condition and a pacemaker.
* StudentCouncilPresident: Before the students were exiled. This leaves her as the only one with any sort of authority, putting her into the role of the students’ leader.

* TheMedic: Becomes this alongside Gordie when the two start running the hospital.

* DespairEventHorizon: Reaches this by 01x07. Being unable to deal with the erosion of his privilege in a healthy way, and suffering crippling drug and alcohol addiction, he winds up confining himself to his room and staying in bed all day. [[spoiler: Campbell whips him back into mental shape somewhat, but not for altruistic reasons]].
* EveryoneHasStandards: [[spoiler: He says that wished Cassandra was dead, and said some other horrible things about her, but the moment Dewey confides in him that he killed her and got him the 'peace and quiet' that he wanted, Harry is understandably shaken and moments later he immediately tells Kelly that Dewey killed Cassandra. For all that he despised her and even if he wished she were dead, it's clear it was just a bad thought and took no pleasure in her death]].

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Has this reaction when [[spoiler: he realizes that him complaining about Cassandra and wishing she was dead inspired Dewey to actually kill her]].

* ADateWithRosiePalms: Masturbates the night he plans to lose his virginity to Cassandra, hoping to last longer when she arrives. [[spoiler: She’s murdered before they meet up]].

* TheMedic: Becomes this alongside Kelly when they start running the hospital.
* TwoferTokenMinority: Is Jewish and implied to be Latino as well (his actor is Latino, and his surname-- Moreno-- is a Spanish and Sephardic Jewish surname common in Latin America, indicating that he is probably Sephardic Jewish).
* PlatonicLifePartners: Is very close with Bean, but they’re just friends. Bean even gives him advice on his date with Cassandra.
* TheSmartGuy: Shares this distinction with Bean.

* CainAndAbel: The Cain to Sam’s Abel.

* FauxAffablyEvil: Presents himself as laid back, honest, and cooperative. Most people don’t buy it, nor should they.
** He acts respectful towards Elle early on in their relationship, but this is just to lure her in. After she moves in with him, he begins abusing her almost immediately.

* ManipulativeBastard: Very good at emotionally manipulating people. Sam warns Allie that he’s still dangerous [[spoiler: even when chained up]] because his biggest weapon is his words.

* TheSociopath: Diagnosed as one, in fact. Sam tells a story about how he cut of the wings of the family's pet bird just to watch it struggle as it died.

* CainAndAbel: The Abel to Campbell’s Cain.
* DeadpanSnarker: Has shades of this, which often ends with Becca telling him DudeNotFunny.
* DisabledCharacterDisabledActor: Sean Berdy is actually deaf.

* PlatonicLifePartners: With Sam.

* BeautyMark: Has one on her left cheek.
* BetaCouple: With Luke.

* LetsWaitAWhile: Insists in not having sexual intercourse with Luke because she's saving herself for marriage. Downplayed in that she's fine giving him oral sex, and [[spoiler: they end up only waiting until their engagement]].

* SlutShaming: Once mocked Elle as a "thot". She regrets this and later apologizes to her.

* BetaCouple: With Helena.
* BookDumb: Is not well-read, but he has more emotional intelligence and better instincts than many people in the town.
* ForcedIntoEvil: [[spoiler: Is coerced into joining the coup plot despite his reservations. This is in contrast to the the rest of the Guard, who join in willingly. Fearing that Campbell will hurt Helena if he doesn't do what he is told]].

* AcademicAthlete: Was on the football team but is also very into literature.

* NiceGuy: He rarely insults people, instead giving them reassurance in the form of compliments and quotes from his favourite works.
* OnlySaneMan: Is one of the few voices of reason in town.

* DumbMuscle: Almost worse than Jason. He's often drunk and comes up with terrible ideas.

* IncompatibleOrientation: Comes onto Grizz, who's gay and admits as much.
* JerkassWithAHeartOfGold: While she has her Jerkass moments (such as refusing to let Elle hang out with her friends, talking suggestively about her friend Kelly's boyfriend and dismissing Cassandra's concerns about the boys' violent behaviour as bitterness that no-one wanted to date her in high school), she's still shown to be a good person despite this.

* AsianAndNerdy: West Asian rather than East Asian, but otherwise plays this straight. She's the main science person alongside Gordie.

* PlatonicLifePartners: Is very chummy with Gordie, but they show no romantic interest in one another.
* TheSmartGuy: Shares this role with her friend, Gordie.
* TokenReligiousTeammate: Is Muslim. She wears a hijab, and can be seen praying from time to time. However, her religious beliefs are out of focus compared to Helena’s.

* AintTooProudToBeg: [[spoiler: Moments before he's about to be executed by Allie and the Guard he's blubbering, sobbing and begging for his life and even swearing to not kill anyone again. It doesn't work.]]

* HeManWomanHater: [[spoiler: Seems to be one as he blames the women in the society for the issues and even beforehand Clark notes that Dewey treated his sister badly, implying that he was a misogynist before and after they got trapped in the new society]].

* AmbiguousDisorder: Her aggressive nature, MoodSwings and negative outlook on the world imply that she may suffer from manic depression.

* SucessfulSiblingSyndrome: She is alternately admires and is jealous of Cassandra. The latter’s academic success and natural leadership skills make Allie feel inferior and causes some tension in their relationship.

* YourCheatingHeart: Was cheating on Clark with a man she met on a college tour, before the show started.

* BadDreams: After she [[spoiler: executes Dewey]], she begins having nightmares.

** She also mentions that she was in a public service program that allowed her to help others build houses in Haiti.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Has this reaction when [[spoiler: he realizes that him complaining about Cassandra and wishing she was dead inspired Dewey to actually kill her]].

Cassandra's younger sister and Will’s friend. She was always overshadowed by her older sister, and wants a chance to prove herself.

* ReluctantRuler: She's pushed into taking over after [[spoiler:Cassandra is killed]], and doesn't much like the position because it puts everything on her shoulders. As PowerCorrupts, however, she becomes more invested into holding onto her position.

* SpoiledSweet: Comes from one of the town’s wealthier families (the town even winds up using his parents’ wine cellar as a jail), but is friendly and good-hearted.

* AntiHero: Even though she is trying to make the world a better place, she is forced to be the ruler due to [[spoiler: Cassandra's death]] and makes some questionable decisions.

* ReluctantRuler: She's pushed into taking over after [[spoiler:Cassandra is killed]], and doesn't much like the position because it puts everything on her shoulders.

* BewareTheNiceOnes: A milder version, but it still applies. Helena's very calm, composed, sweet and mild-mannered. But she knows how to shoot a gun and even stood up to Campbell when he came to her house looking for Elle, where she tells Campbell to 'Fuck off' and that he's 'not welcome here [at her home]'. And she wasn't there when Sam told Allie and the rest of her friends what Campbell's capable of, so it goes to show just how brave she is as well.
