The secret son of Jonathan Morgenstern and Seelie Queen, he was conceived when the two were allied during the Dark War. He was kidnapped by the Unseelie King and subjected to experiments using spells from the Black Volume of the Dead.

* HeinzHybrid: He is half-faerie through his mother and half-angelic, demonic, and mortal through his father.

* RapidAging: Because he was raised in Faerie, where time is a train wreck, Ash grew to double his age. Then when he enters Thule, he is transported three years back in time, while Emma and Julian are transported to two years in the future, so when the two meet him, he has aged up an additional five years. * AmbiguousDisorder: His traumatic experiences in Faerie Land and The Dark War left him with some severe mental problems, but due to the taboo on mental illness in the Shadowhunter culture nobody knows exactly what is wrong with him.

* MyBelovedSmother: She handpicks which dresses for her daughter to wear, which always fit her badly. Dialogues imply that she raised her children in a strict household, too. Possibly a stereotype of Middle Eastern/Southern European domineering mothers.
* ParentsAsPeople: Subverted. While she loves her children, she also expects them to bring prestige to the Carstairs family. Their move to London, is, after all, to gain enough allies so they have witnesses for Elias' trial. However, it is later revealed that she moved the family to London because she wanted her children to make allies for themselves, as she already considered Elias a lost cause.

Small wonders none of them are in the mood to be friends with him, even after he matures into a (somewhat) reasonable man.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: By the events of ''Chain of Gold'', it's obvious that he has matured from being the jerkass that he was during his Academy years; though he is still standoffish, he is no longer prone to insults.
