!''Juno Steel''
[[folder:Juno Steel]]
!!Juno Steel
->'''Voiced by:''' Joshua Ilon
->"My name is Juno Steel. I used to be one of the guys who cleaned up this mess for the uptight types. Now? Well, now I mostly spread the mess around."

The titular detective of the Penumbra's space noir series. Extremely unhappy and determined to make Hyperion City a better place. Somehow.
----
* AbusiveParents: After she lost her job at Northstar Entertainment and became so poor she needed to move to Old Town, Juno’s mother was this to him and his brother: to the point where she ''killed'' Juno’s brother.
* TheAlcoholic: Juno's drunken himself into a stupor on more than one occasion.
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Juno had a twin brother named Benzaiten; growing up, the two were nearly inseparable. Then their mother [[OffingTheOffspring murdered Benzaiten when he was nineteen because she thought he was Juno]]. Juno's been crippled with guilt over it ever since (both over not having been there to stop it and over the inciting incident that made their mother despise Juno, despite the fact that the latter happened when Juno was ''four years old''), and it's one of the main reasons for his [[TheEeyore depression]] and DeathSeeker tendencies at the beginning of the series.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Under the influence of the Theia Soul.
* CareerVersusMan: At the end of season 1, Juno has to choose between his detective work in Hyperion City and running away with Peter. [[NotStayingForBreakfast He chooses his detective work.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Gets some dropped on him by Alessandra towards the climax of the Promised Land arc, and makes the decision to live rather than die dramatically and heroically.
** If Season One established Juno as a broken lady detective, then Season Two is all about his growing beyond that. Juno learns to stop throwing a HeroicSacrifice at everything and to value his relationships.
* ColdBloodedTorture: He and Peter face this at the hands of Miasma when she's trying to activate the effects of the Martian pill.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Like most characters. Things were fine until he turned four and his mother lost her job at Northstar Entertainment. After that, his family moved to Old Town, and it only got worse from then on.
* DatingCatwoman: A private eye whose romantic interest is a master thief. Of course, by Season 3 [[spoiler:Juno is officially a criminal himself, so this trope is no longer in effect]].
* DeadpanSnarker: ''Constantly'' quipping about whatever mess he's gotten into.
* DealWithTheDevil: Ramses O'Flaherty.
* DeathSeeker: Throughout Season 1 and most of Season 2. Juno constantly flings himself at every dangerous thing in Hyperion City; he plays it off as heroism and trying to do good, but other characters [[WhatTheHellHero are quick to call him out on the fact]] that it's because he thinks he's better off dead than alive. He locks himself in the bomb shelter with the [[FantasticNuke Egg of Purus]] despite the fact that he and Peter probably could've thought of another way to dispose of it (to the point where the official script says Juno's "disappointed" when the bomb goes off and he finds out he's alive), and at one point he throws himself into oncoming traffic to save a ''cat''.
-->'''Juno:''' Look, I'm not some selfless—\\
'''Ramses:''' No, you're definitely not "some selfless". Your delight at throwing yourself into harm's way implies more self-loathing than self-sacrifice. Great heroes risk great things. You risk only yourself, and as far as you're concerned that's very little on the line.
* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Subverted; he spills his feelings to Nureyev when he thinks he's about to die, but ends up surviving.
* TheEeyore: Major clinical depression? Doesn't value his own life at all? Makes life harder for everyone who cares about him? Yeah.
* GenderBlenderName: "Juno" is the Roman goddess of motherhood and childbirth.
* GoodIsNotNice: God, he's an ''asshole''. But he's stalwart force for good.
* HandicappedBadass: Loses an eye at the end of Season 1, and again after he's freed from the Theia Spectrum.
* HardboiledDetective: Deconstructed. He has many of the hallmarks of a heroic version of this - cynicism, depressive tendencies, snarkiness, world-weariness, a willingness to put his life on the line - but it's made abundantly clear they're symptoms of mental illness, trauma, and suicidal ideation.
* HeroicSacrifice: Deconstructed. As Ramses points out, Juno's willingness to throw his life away for the greater good isn't from a sense of nobility - it's because he simply doesn't value himself or his life very much.
* HopelessWithTech: Juno can play solitaire on a computer, but that's about it. He attributes this to not having any of this while he was a child.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Juno has ''really'' good aim. Only gets better with the Theia Spectrum.
* ItsAllAboutMe: An interesting twist. Juno tends to blame himself for everything, something Sasha Wire calls him out for when he tries to take the blame for her sister Annie's accidental death when they were children, telling him that he uses his own misery to ignore others and justify his lifestyle.
* JerkassRealization: Sasha slaps him with one in "The Day That Wouldn't Die."
* KnightInSourArmor: Is dedicated to making Hyperion City a better place, but is intensely cynical.
* NotStayingForBreakfast: Leaves Nureyev in the middle of the night at the end of Season 1, despite saying he'd leave to travel the galaxy with him.
* OddFriendship: Is or was friends with a high ranking official in a secret intelligence agency, his high-energy tech genius secretary, a TV personality and her psychotic brother, and Mick Mercury.
* PsychicPowers: Thanks to the Martian pill.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: On the receiving end from Sasha.
* StepfordSnarker: No matter how bad things get, Juno is ''always'' snarking. This includes on a reality TV show where the host is trying to kill him, on a train where he is being murdered by a criminal ''and'' poisonous gas, and in a Martian tomb where he was tortured by Miasma for several days, and just ''killed two people''. This is definitely a coping mechanism, for the ''numerous'' things that have gone horribly wrong, or are going wrong, in his life.
* SurvivorGuilt: About both his brother and the security guard from the museum raid.
* TookALevelInKindness: Over the course of Season 2. He's still a DeadpanSnarker, but he learns to stop lashing out at the people around him.
* {{Transgender}}: Juno is canonically non-binary. He uses he/him pronouns but regularly calls himself and is called a lady.
* WhatTheHellHero: Gets several of these over the first two seasons before his character development really kicks in.

[[folder:Rita]]
!!Rita
->'''Voiced by:''' Kate Jones
->"Item four: tell Mister Steel you want to go see a movie on his birthday, but your car is broken and Frannie is dead, so he needs to pick you up."

Juno's secretary and right-hand woman. Cares about him despite his abrasive personality.
----
* BadassAdorable: Sweet, ditzy, and as of "The Rita Minute 3," capable of hacking Dark Matters. She saves Newtown from the Theia Soul chips thanks to her computer skills.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: See above.
* BigSisterInstinct: Is older than Juno, and often takes it upon herself to take care of him or force him to take care of himself.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: "Juno Steel and the Mega-Ultrabots of Cyberjustice" shows that she's prone to this. Whenever one of her friends has a problem, Rita thinks it's her job to fix it, even if it has nothing to do with her. But oftentimes she tries to solve the issue on her own without asking the person with the issue what kind of help they need (or if they even need help at all), with [[NiceJobBreakingItHero less than stellar results]] - like when she hatches a scheme to get [[{{MacGuffin}} the Book]] without telling [[TheCaptain Buddy]] first, or when she [[spoiler:looks up Peter's birth name in order to prove he's not suspicious without realizing it's [[DoNotCallMePaul a huge violation of his privacy]]]].
-->'''Rita:''' Sometimes... sometimes when you see other people are hurting and you try to help them, you're really just being selfish, aint'cha? 'Cause you don't want to ''look'' at the hurt, you just want to fix it so it'll go away.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Rita doodles when she's supposed to be taking notes, can't hold a conversation for more than a few minutes without launching into a long-winded explanation of the plot of one of her favorite streams, and destroys the microwave every time she tries to pop popcorn. [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass Not that it makes her any less great at what she does]].
* TheCracker: Assuming that writing viruses in minutes (or less!) isn't a common skill in Hyperion City.
* MoreDeadlyThanTheMale: In a sense. She's [[HardboiledDetective Juno Steel's]] ditzy, mild-mannered secretary... and also one of the best hackers in the entire solar system, who's shown to be infinitely more competent than Juno whenever she's around to help during an episode. Jet tells Juno that the main reason Buddy accepted him into the [[BadassCrew Aurinko Crime Family]] was not because of his own skills, but because they wanted to recruit Rita and knew she'd only come if Juno was there.
* MotorMouth: Especially when talking about her favorite streams.
* MysteriousPast: Nobody knows what her last name is, where she's from, or what she did prior to working for Juno. All we know is that she has a ''lot'' of money (enough to register Juno as a private investigator and buy him his own office without a second thought), and that she's one of the most competent hackers in the solar system.
* OnlyOneName: She's just Rita. Aggressively so.
* PlatonicLifePartners: One of the most important people in Juno's life, to the point where he refuses to join Buddy's crew without her.
* PopCulturedBadass: She has a vast knowledge of movies and shows, and often draws on them for comparison when explaining her thought process.
* SassySecretary: Oh, boy. ''Big time''. It's {{Lampshaded}}.
* ShooOutTheClowns: When things become especially dire for Juno, she's cut off from him. Until Juno realizes how much she is his equal and keeps her around in the season two finale.
* VoiceWithAnInternetConnection: She's this for Juno during many of his cases.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Peter Nureyev]]
!!Peter Nureyev (aka Rex Glass, Christopher Morales, Duke Rose, Perseus Shah, Leon Prince, Peter Ransom, Monsieur Dauphin, etc.)
->'''Voiced by:''' Noah Simes

A master thief and con artist. Very well versed in the history of heists and has connections everywhere.
----
* TheAce: Peter's a master thief who's highly intelligent, incredibly attractive, and an expert at social engineering. He's pulled off several seemingly impossible heists, and once liberated an entire planet from its oppressors when he was, at most, sixteen years old. Even characters who don't like him (such as [[spoiler:Jet and Vespa at the beginning of season 3]]) accept that he's amazing at what he does.
** BrokenAce: By season 3, he's also depressed and bitter about Juno leaving him at the end of season 1, [[HeroicSafeMode trying to cope with decades of repressed trauma and failing miserably]], terrified of aging, and [[spoiler:in massive amounts of debt]].
* AgentPeacock: A very feminine gay man who also happens to be one of the best thieves in the galaxy.
* BadassBoast: His speech to the guards on New Kinshasa before he escaped and left Brahma.
* BeneathTheMask: Season 3's first episode reveals that despite his composed exterior, he has enough issues to rival Juno - he refuses to acknowledge his HiddenHeartOfGold, and pushes various issues away.
* TheBusCameBack: He returns at the season two finale. He's apparently working with Buddy and Jet.
* CheshireCatGrin: He has a cherub's smile but a mouth full of sharp teeth.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: He's got a bad case of it. He betrays Mag on the New Kinshasa heist, betrays Dark Matters to steal Grimm's Mask for Miasma, betrays Miasma to protect Juno, [[spoiler:seemingly betrays Juno and the rest of the Aurinko Crime Family to pay off his debts]]...
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Was an orphan on Brahma, then taken in by a man named Mag. Mag raised him to be the prodigy thief he is today. But Peter killed him when Mag wanted to wipe out the city of New Kinshasa and revealed his past was a lie.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Juno's the only person allowed to call him by his birth name. He [[BerserkButton flips out]] when [[spoiler:Rita accidentally calls him Nureyev in "Juno Steel and the Mega-Ultrabots of Cyberjustice"]].
* GentlemanSnarker: He matches Juno in wit, but exceeds him in polite veneer.
* GentlemanThief: But of course.
* HeroWithBadPublicity: On Brahma. The public version of the story is that he's a terrorist who almost destroyed Brahma's capital city, New Kinshasa. The real version of the story is a lot different - Peter and his mentor Mag successfully disabled the superweapon that [[EvilColonialist New Kinshasa]] was using to oppress the people of Brahma, and then when Mag revealed his plans to capitalize on the situation and destroy New Kinshasa in its entirety, Peter killed Mag in order to save everyone in the city.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Very much so. He's a ConMan who commits crimes on the regular, but whenever he finds himself in a situation where innocent people are going to be seriously hurt, he always ends up stepping in to do the right thing. He steals artifacts for Miasma until he realizes that her ultimate goal is to use them to commit genocide, then actively works to stop her, and in "Juno Steel and the Man in Glass", while he does steal from [[spoiler:Nova Zolotovna, he refuses to bleed her dry because he doesn't think she deserves it (even though doing so would instantly pay off his debts)]]. Buddy Aurinko even says as much when he asks her what his "calling card" is that allowed her to trace him:
-->'''Buddy''': An enduring moral core, coupled with a strong desire to excise that core completely. Demonstrated, of course, by a consistent pattern of pro-bono work followed up by a lot of con-bono -- like having a heart embarrasses you.
* [[FemmeFatale Homme Fatale]]
* KnifeNut: Superb with a blade.
* LoveableRogue
* MasterActor: Has hundreds of identities (with wildly different personalities, appearances, mannerisms, etc.), and is able to switch between them at the drop of a hat.
* RageAgainstTheMentor: He's understandably pissed when he learns, in the span of a few minutes, that Mag lied to him about knowing his father, about where Peter was from, and about the plan to get rid of New Kinshasa's Guardian Angel System.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: As a member of the Aurinko Crime Family, he uses the alias "Peter Ransom" - his real first name and his mentor/adoptive father's last name. But because he's notorious for his [[TwoAliasesOneCharacter many aliases]], everyone on the Carte Blanche except for Juno [[spoiler:and Rita]] assumes it's just as fake as the rest of the names he's gone by.
* SanitySlippage: Over the course of season 3, he's been having some sort of slow mental breakdown -- not sleeping, hearing things that aren't there, letting the mess in his quarters pile up, forgetting crucial mission-related details, etc. It's implied to have something to do with [[spoiler:his impending betrayal of the Aurinko Crime Family]].
* SelfMadeOrphan: After a fashion. He was already an orphan when Mag adopted him, but Peter later killed him.
* StepfordSmiler: Throughout season 1, he's ThePollyanna, serving as a foil to Juno's mopiness and continuously optimistic no matter how dire things get (even when he and Juno are being tortured in an underground tomb). When we finally get to hear him narrate an episode in season 3, it's revealed that this optimism was almost entirely a mask - underneath it all, he's depressed and badly coping with his trauma. He's just also ''really'' [[HeroicSafeMode good at compartmentalizing.]]
* SurvivalMantra: "File it away, under For Future Consideration."
* ThemedAliases: Most of his many aliases include some sort of reference to royalty. ''Rex'' Glass, ''Duke'' Rose, Perseus ''Shah'', Leon ''Prince'', Monsieur ''Dauphin'', a representative from ''Tsar'' Shipping...
* WithholdingTheirName: Only Juno knows that his real name is Peter Nureyev. [[spoiler:As of season 3, so do Rita and whoever he's in debt to]].
* WorkOffTheDebt: The main reason he [[spoiler:took the Carte Blanche job is because he's millions of creds in debt to an unknown entity and needs to pay it off extremely quickly]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:SashaWire]]
!!Agent Sasha Wire
->'''Voiced by:''' Sophie Kaner

An old friend of Juno's from Old Town. After over a decade apart, she comes back into Juno's life as an agent of Dark Matters.
----
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She and the boys decided to play a few mean tricks on her little sister for being a pest. She went missing and was presumed dead after Juno sent her into the abandoned munitions factory.
* PutOnABus: She's promoted to Dark Matters subdirector midway through season 1, and doesn't appear in person again...
** TheBusCameBack: ...until [[spoiler:the season 3 episode "Juno Steel and What Lies Beyond", when she and her agents crash Buddy and Vespa's wedding to take the [[CaperCrew Aurinko Crime Family]] into Dark Matters custody]].
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: She lays into Juno about his self-centered worldview and martyrdom after their ordeal in Old Town.
* TheStoic: Doesn't show much emotion, even when confronted with her past trauma. It's what makes her an effective Dark Matters agent.
* ThreeAmigos: With Juno and Mick as kids in Old Town.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:MickMercury]]
!!Mick Mercury
->'''Voiced by:''' Stefano Perti

Juno's childhood best friend. Has made significantly less of himself than either Juno or Sasha. Prone to bad investments.
----
* BlatantLies: As a kid, he claimed he was "King of the Freeway" and made outlandish stories about his travels to Hyperion City. He was proven wrong when a building he claimed to have been in one day ''blew up'' that morning. But Sasha and Mick still hung out with him.
* BreakThemByTalking: While under controlled by the Theia Soul, he nearly convinces Juno to give in to Ramses' idea.
* MindControlDevice: He's the first person Juno and Rita encounter who is controlled by the Theia Soul. It's not pretty.
* ThreeAmigos: Sasha and Juno still adored him after he was proven a liar.
* WhatTheHellHero: Delivers one to Juno, right after he gets a [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech harsher one]] from Sasha.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alessandra Strong]]
!!Alessandra Strong
-->'''Voiced by:''' Kat Buckingham

A rival PI Juno met on a case. An ex-veteran who survived the war, known as 'Cockroach Strong' because she can survive anything.
----
* CrazyPrepared: Her time in the military and will to live means she'll carry two weeks of rations to a mission that was supposed to take a few days.
* DareToBeBadass: Encourages Juno to survive.
* {{Determinator}}: Unlike Juno, she refuses to falter when things get ugly.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Buddy Aurinko]]
!!Buddy Aurinko
-->'''Voiced by:''' Sarah Gazdowicz

A retired thief who now runs the Aurinko Crime Family and Captain of the Carte Blanche.
----
* BrutalHonesty: Kicks things off with her new crime family by telling them all point-blank that none of them are the best at what they do, and they need to rely on each other if they want to succeed.
* {{Cyborg}}: She has a cybernetic eye [[spoiler:and a cybernetic heart and stomach to match]].
* EyeScream: Thanks to being exposed to Mars radiation for a prolonged period of time, one eye has severe nuclear damage.
* FieryRedhead: As described by Juno in "Juno Steel and the Time Gone By":
-->'''Juno:''' The woman who’d just taken my drink was a bombshell, by which I mean she looked extremely dangerous and made a hell of an entrance. She had big plumes of flame-red hair trailing over her neck and half her face and a dress so avant-garde I would’ve believed her if she said she got it next year. The first thing she did when she sat down was put a blaster on the table in front of her and, in the process, reveal she had another one, two knives, and what looked like a grenade strapped to her leg. She looked ready for a war -- hell, she looked ready to fight on both sides.
* HatesTheirParent: Despises her father, [[{{Pun}} Palomine]], although what exactly he did to deserve it is unclear.
* MoralityPet: She was the catalyst for [[TheAtoner Jet's]] HeelFaceTurn several years before the start of the series, although by their first appearance, Jet's clearly committed to doing good on his own.
* TheNeedless: She jokes to Juno that, as a result of her radiation damage from the Cerberus Province, she's "allergic to food." Turns out it's because [[spoiler:her mechanical stomach can't handle solids, and alcohol is all she needs to power her cybernetic organs]].
* NeverGetsDrunk: As revealed in "Juno Steel and the Heart of it All", [[spoiler:her [[{{Cyborg}} cybernetic heart]] runs on alcohol]]; thus, she's constantly drinking, but never shows any signs of inebriation.
* OfficialCouple: Vespa is her girlfriend.
* TeamMom: Becomes this for the Aurinko Crime Family. {{Lampshaded}} by Rita.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Vespa Ilkay]]
!!Vespa Ilkay
-->'''Voiced by:''' Chloe Cunha

A specialist in field medicine and assassinations. Reunited with Buddy after being presumed dead for several years and is now a part of her crime family.
----
* CombatMedic: A field medic who is also skilled in assassinations.
* HandyShortcoming: Vespa suffers from psychosis as a result of her radiation poisoning, and constantly experiences vivid hallucinations. This ends up being an asset in "Juno Steel and the Shadows on the Ship", when [[spoiler:the Carte Blanche is attacked by [[HumanShifting a shapeshifter]] and Vespa, because she's spent so long learning how to distinguish her hallucinations from reality, is the only person who's able to [[SpotTheImpostor correctly determine who her real crewmates are and who is the impostor]]]].
* HealthcareMotivation: After she almost died following a heist with Buddy Aurinko gone wrong, she was forced into slavery under the [[LoanShark Board of Fresh Starts]] in order to work off her medical debts, and spent half a decade in indentured servitude as a mob boss's personal doctor and assassin.
* OfficialCouple: Buddy is her girlfriend.
* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: One of the symptoms of her radiation poisoning is that she often experiences hallucinations that vary in intensity based on her mental state. When she's [[SwitchingPoV narrating an episode,]] it's often hard to tell what's actually happening and what's just a hallucination. For example, "Juno Steel and the Shadows on the Ship" starts with her getting into an argument with Juno and Peter; it lasts for several minutes before the audience realizes that [[spoiler:Peter's asleep in the medbay and Vespa's been hallucinating him the entire time]].
* {{Transgender}}: "Juno Steel and the Shadows on the Ship" reveals that she's a trans woman.
* VolleyingInsults: Seems to happen quite often with Juno.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Has green hair.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jet Sikuliaq]]
!!Jet Sikuliaq
-->'''Voiced by:''' Alexander Stravinski

Also known as "The Man in the Brown Jacket", he is a pilot and initially met Juno after tailing him for Buddy.
----
* AcePilot[=/=]BadassDriver: In the Ruby 7.
* {{Asexuality}}: Jet is asexual and aromantic.
* TheAtoner: He knows he can't truly make up for his actions in the past, but he's determined to do good in spite of them.
* TheComicallySerious
* ConspiracyTheorist: Watching some of [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Rita's]] streams is enough to convince him that the government is secretly run by aliens in disguise.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: In his younger days, he was an infamous thief and a murderer. It is a past he is not proud of.
* VenturousSmuggler: During the War, he made a living by smuggling goods across the Outer Rim border.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Benzaiten Steel]]
!!Benzaiten Steel
-->'''Voiced by:''' Marc Pierre

The twin brother of Juno Steel. Died about twenty years before the start of the story.
----
* DeadPersonConversation: Juno talks to the memory of his brother in Monster's Reflection.
* OffingTheOffspring: He was murdered by his and Juno's mother after she accused him of stealing her pills.
* SiblingYinYang: In every possible way with Juno.
* ThePollyanna: Was incredibly optimistic and tried to see the best in everyone. [[AbusiveParents Including his and Juno's mother]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Omar Khan]]
!!Omar Khan
-->'''Voiced by:''' Elliott Sicard

Captain of the 151st precinct of the Hyperion City Police Department.
----
* DaChief: He's the captain of his precinct, and he [[ByTheBookCop tries his best to maintain law and order]] despite the corruptness of the organization he works for. Juno describes him as "one of the few good cops left in Hyperion City".
* FriendOnTheForce: "Friend" might be pushing it, but despite the less than amicable circumstances surrounding Juno's departure from the HCPD, he's come to Khan on more than one occasion for help and advice.
* HappilyMarried: To his wife Noor.
* HasTwoMommies: Raised by two female parents, whom he refers to as "Big Mom" and "Little Mom".
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: Has at least six children.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Miasma]]
!!Miasma
-->'''Voiced by:''' Kate Jones

A xenoanthropologist obsessed with Ancient Martian culture.
----
* ColdBloodedTorture: Performs painful experiments on Juno (and flat-out tortures Nureyev as motivation for Juno to comply) to collect data on the effects of the [[{{Telepathy}} Lassonionic Capsule]].
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: In the season 1 finale, she manages to activate the Egg of Purus, a bioweapon which she believes will wipe out all life on Mars. Except its true purpose is only to destroy all ''Martian'' life... and she's just injected herself with Martian DNA. As all the ancient Martians died millennia ago, [[SelfDisposingVillain she's the only one killed by the blast.]]
* TheManBehindTheMan: Nureyev turns out to be a mercenary hired by her, unaware of her intentions with the artifacts she's paid him to steal. (When he learns [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt what she plans to accomplish with them]], he [[TheStarscream defects and helps Juno take her down]].)
* ProfessorGuineaPig: Splices Martian DNA into her genome; acquires superhuman strength and regenerative abilities as a result.
* StarterVillain: She's the overarching villain of Season 1.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Eats a concerningly large amount of soup.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Pilot Pereyra]]
!!Pilot Pereyra
-->'''Voiced by:''' Simon Moody

The notoriously corrupt mayor of Hyperion City.
----
* CorruptPolitician: Their administration is known for taking bribes and has deep ties to many of Hyperion City's crime syndicates. Hyperion City's voting population doesn't seem to mind -- according to the Promised Land liveshow, Pilot ran for office using the slogan "if the bad guys get to use bad guys, why don't we?".
* HighHeelPower: According to Juno, in "Juno Steel and the Promised Land":
-->'''Juno:''' Pilot Pereyra, mayor of Hyperion City for four years running, was famous for their stiletto heels. They had a new pair in a new hideous color every week, and Pilot made killings off of them. Both in the literal sense – just ask Sal Barone, found floating in Mars’s orbit with two of Pilot’s heels jammed into his throat – and in the financial sense – like how for a year after, every crime boss in Hyperion paid Pilot hand over fist for a pair like the one that killed Barone.
* {{Transgender}}: Pilot is nonbinary and goes by they/them pronouns.
* VillainousBreakdown: Their life goal was to find [[AdvancedAncientAcropolis the Free Dome]]; they have one of these at the end of "Juno Steel and the Promised Land" when they realize the Free Dome was never actually built.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ramses O'Flaherty]]
!!Ramses O'Flaherty, aka Jack Takano
-->'''Voiced by:''' Matthew Zahnzinger

A mayoral candidate who wants to end the corruption plaguing Hyperion City. He hires Juno Steel to protect him during his campaign.
----
* TheAtoner: [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]]. After he steals Sarah's intellectual property and ruins the lives of her and her sons, he's filled with guilt and vows to spend the rest of his life doing good to make up for what he's done. However, his idea of "doing good" usually falls under either "throw copious amounts of money at a problem until it goes away" or "take away people's free will so they can't do bad things".
* BigBadFriend: In "Juno Steel and the Promised Land", he's revealed to be the cause of Juno's malfunctioning eye, the person who hired Piranha and the Proctor, and the perpetrator of the real estate scam, Maia King's attempted assassination, and the sabotage of Polaris Park. He hired Juno Steel not to protect him, but to take out Pilot Pereyra so that O'Flaherty can win the mayoral election by default.
* BuyThemOff: After he stole ''Andromeda: Chainmail Warrior'' from Sarah Steel and made millions off of it, he felt guilty and tried to send Sarah most of the profits. When Sarah refused to accept the money, he [[FauxAffablyEvil got mad and filed a restraining order against her.]]
* MrAltDisney: When he went by Jack Takano, he managed Northstar Entertainment in much the same way Disney managed his own company. And of course, there's his ambition to create a futuristic utopia.
* MysteriousBacker: In return for protection during his mayoral campaign, he pays Juno handsomely and provides him with the THEIA Spectrum, a top-of-the-line cybernetic eye that, according to Juno, costs as much as "an army that will do your shooting for you".
* ShadowArchetype: He represents Juno's worst traits taken [[UpToEleven to grotesque extremes]] - his ego and obsession with doing good, regardless of the feelings of others.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Under both of his identities. Jack Takano was lauded by the public as one of the greatest creative minds of all time - they were unaware that the project that made him famous, ''Andromeda: Chainmail Warrior'', was a property he stole from Sarah Steel. Ramses O'Flaherty wins his mayoral election by a landslide; even after his death, he's considered the best mayor Hyperion has ever had and posthumously declared a galactic hero. (To be fair, he ''did'' institute rent-controlled affordable housing that ended up keeping millions of people off the streets... it's just that he was also planning to mind-control everyone living in said affordable housing units before Juno and Rita thwarted his plans.)
* WellIntentionedExtremist: He truly wants to end corruption in Hyperion City and keep its citizens safe. Unfortunately, his plan to do this is to use the THEIA Soul to mind-control everyone in the city and stop them from making dangerous choices.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:M'tendere]]
!!M'tendere
-->'''Voiced by:''' Anjimile

A former weapons designer who has a history with Jet.

* ArmsDealer: They made and sold weapons during the war.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Seeing Jet [[spoiler:set off one of their bombs, resulting in the death of fifteen people]], triggered this reaction in them.

!''The Second Citadel''
[[folder:Marc and Talfryn]]
!!Sir Marc
->'''Voiced by:''' Stefano Perti

One half of the would-be knight duo. Completely determined to be formally knighted despite the obstacles placed before him.
----
* BigBrotherInstinct: Rushes off to scream that he thinks ''might'' be Tal. [[spoiler: It's not]].
* {{Determinator}}: He took the knight exam hundreds of times. The actual knights are the only things holding him back.
* DisabledSnarker: His legs are paralyzed and cause him pain. Barely a minute goes by when he hasn't made a quip about the situation at hand.
* [[FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling Foolish Sibling]]: He's the brother who wanted to be a knight in the first place. Plays fast and loose with the pills he needs to function.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Says this about himself and Rilla, she doesn't disagree.

!!Sir Talfryn
->'''Voiced by:''' Jason Millen

The second half of the would-be knight duo. Less keen on perilous adventures, but accompanies his brother anyway.
----
* Asexuality
* BigEater: Insists he isn't, but Marc claims otherwise.
* CowardlyLion: Would rather run and/or hide from trouble, but when push comes to shove he is both clever and very brave, looking for [[TakeAThirdOption third options,]] and one couldn't have a more staunch ally.
* [[FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling Responsible Sibling]]: He's the brother who takes odd jobs to keep them in the black. Dotes on Marc, whether Marc likes it or not. But will occasionally pull a stunt.
* OnlySaneMan: He may be anxious, but among him, Angelo, Damien, and his brother, he's the only one paying enough attention to his surroundings to make coherent conclusions.
* ScarilyCompetentTracker: He's a far better tracker than Marc, and occasionally works as one to put food on the proverbial table. Found a shortcut around the Lake of Tranquillity that even the Queen wasn't aware of.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sir Caroline]]
!!Sir Caroline
->'''Voiced by:''' Leslie Drescher

The first-ever female knight in the queen's service. Serious like a heart attack and somewhat ruthless.
----
* {{Determinator}}: Is able to attack a creature of pure fear, despite the fact said creature was able to hold off three other leads just with it's psychic powers.
* GoodIsNotNice: Is a very capable knight, but can be rather rude to her fellow knights. (Then again, the other knights are also often rude to her.)
* IceQueen: So very standoffish. WordOfGod says she's just kind of like that.
* OnlySaneMan: In 'Lady of the Lake', she's in charge on the mission with Damien and Angelo as Investigator General. She takes initiative and researches the situation while the others are less helpful; Sir Damien is too distraught over Rilla's kidnap to be much use, and Sir Angelo spends most of his time comforting his friend.
* SheIsTheKing: Although she serves the Queen, she's referred to as "Sir" Caroline.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Sir Caroline is the only woman in a citadel of male knights. Lampshaded when Angelo implies ''this'' is her special skill.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sir Angelo]]
!!Sir Angelo
->'''Voiced by:''' M. Sutherland

One of the queen's most famous and powerful knights. Extremely physically strong but not quite as sharp as his best friend and rival Sir Damien.
----
* FriendlyRivalry: Happy to be "best rivals" with Damien.
* TheHeart: Of the characters, Sir Angelo is the most likely to stand his ground on the correct course of action.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: Really doesn't pick up on Sir Caroline's offence when he tells her to smile more.
* LargeHam: Subtly is not his strong suit.
* LiteralMinded: Has a tendency to take Damien's more flowery metaphors very literally.
* SuperStrength: Stronger than any other knight so far.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sir Damien]]
!!Sir Damien
->'''Voiced by:''' Matthew Zahnzinger

Also one of the queen's most famous and powerful knights. Likes poetry and the sound of his own voice. Somewhat obsessed with his rivalry/friendship with Angelo.
----
* TheArcher: Proficient with a bow above all other weapons.
* BadLiar: Particularly when panicking or anxious.
* {{Catchphrase}}
-->'''Damien:''' I must speak my heart.
* CrisisOfFaith: During 'The Battle at World's End'.
* {{Determinator}}: Sir Damien has fought monsters while sick, comatose, and with a [[MadeOfIron leg fractured in five pieces]].
* FriendlyRivalry: With Sir Angelo.
* GuiltComplex: According to Rilla, he can barely handle the guilt he makes up, much less actual blame. He's ''very'' insecure.
* MotorMouth: So very talkative. He becomes babbling when he's upset.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: He's named after Saint Damien the Tranquil, a founder of the Second Citadel. Regularly prays to him for guidance.
* NervousWreck: He often has to be calmed down from anxiety attacks, and frequently prays for tranquillity.
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler: He sends a letter of resignation to Queen Mira in part two of "The Lovers of the Fallen Tower" so he can focus on improving his relationship with Rilla and Arum]].
* WarriorPoet

[[folder:Lord Arum]]
!!Lord Arum
->'''Voiced by:''' Noah Simes

Lord of the Swamp of Titan's Bloom. A humanoid lizard who doubles as a trap making architect.
----
* BornOfMagic: Was created by the Keep.
* CallingParentsByTheirName: Even though the Keep technically created him and is his parent, he just calls it "Keep."
* HatesEveryoneEqually: Hates humans, but seems to hate his fellow monsters almost as much.
* KnifeNut: In his first fight, he has four knives in his four hands.
* LimaSyndrome: After [[spoiler: developing a crush on Sir Damien]], Arum slowly begins to feel things for [[spoiler: Rilla]] while she's stuck at his keep.
* LizardFolk: As Noah Simes says in the episode commentary, he is literally a lizard.
* MonsterLord: He's not called "Lord" Arum for nothing.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: As mentioned above, he has four arms.
* SingleSpecimenSpecies: The only lizardman of his kind. Justified as he was created by the Keep.
* TheSymbiote: With the Keep. He protects it, takes care of it, and is nourished by it, but if he is cut off from his connection with it, he starts to die.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Rilla]]
!!Amaryllis, aka Rilla
->'''Voiced by:''' Melissa Ennulat

The local herbalist/doctor of the Second Citadel. A woman of science and technology in an age of so-called "magic potions." Makes medicine for Marc and is engaged to Damien.
----
* BluntYes: Marc suggests using instant fire starter. She heartily agrees.
* DoctorsOrders: Reminds Marc that she's his healthcare provider, and therefore the final authority on his medication.
* LoveConfession: While on trial in [[spoiler: monster court]], she confesses the truth that she loves [[spoiler: Lord Arum]].
* NatureHero[=/=]ScienceHero: She scours the deadly jungle on her own to find specimens to research.
* ScienceDestroysMagic: She's determined to end snake oil "magic potions" with her evidence-based research. She's got far to go, though.
* StockholmSyndrome: She, like her fiance, develops feelings for [[spoiler: Lord Arum]] while he holds her captive.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Keep]]
!!The Keep

Lord Arum's sentient home in the Swamp of Titan's Bloom.
* AdorableAbomination: It might be an EldritchAbomination, but it dotes on Lord Arum, is very cheerful, works hard to make its inhabitants happy, and lulls Arum to sleep when he overworks himself.
* BotanicalAbomination / LivingStructureMonster: It is a sentient plant/building.
* CoolHouse: It's a sentient plant/building! It can reform itself to whatever shape required of it, expand and "build" new rooms, and its front door is a portal to anywhere in the Swamp of Titan's Bloom.
* DotingParent: To Arum. The Keep created Arum to take care of it and it dotes on him like a loving parent, telling him not to work to hard, singing him lullabies, and generally just being a mom to him. It also would do anything for him, up to hurting itself to protect him.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Quanyii]]
!!Quanyii
->'''Voiced by:''' Melissa Dejesus

A mysterious witch the group meets in the jungle. She has a flighty personality, but always seems to be secretive.
----
* AmbiguouslyEvil: It mostly comes down to the setting. She's a witch, the rest of the characters are knights, there's a conflict there even if she seems mostly willing to help out. [[spoiler:It turns out she's actually entirely there to protect her girlfriend, Sir Caroline]].
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: It's hard to tell whether it's this or ObfuscatingStupidity, but it's clear she has a screw loose.
* LipstickLesbian

* HappilyAdopted: The sisters of the Garden of Graves clearly loved her very much, especially Sister Tiilei.

Steel]]''

*''[[Characters/ThePenumbraPodcastSecondCitadel
* DealWithTheDevil: Ramses O'Flaherty.
-->'''Juno:''' Look, I'm not some selfless—\\

!!Rita
->'''Voiced by:''' Kate Jones

* BewareTheNiceOnes: See above.

->'''Voiced by:''' Noah Simes

* GentlemanThief: But of course.
* [[FemmeFatale Homme Fatale]]
* KnifeNut: Superb with a blade.
* LoveableRogue

[[folder:MickMercury]]
!!Mick Mercury

* BreakThemByTalking: While under controlled by the Theia Soul, he nearly convinces Juno to give in to Ramses' idea.
* MindControlDevice: He's the first person Juno and Rita encounter who is controlled by the Theia Soul. It's not pretty.
* ThreeAmigos: Sasha and Juno still adored him after he was proven a liar.

->'''Voiced by:''' Jason Millen

The second half of the would-be knight duo. Less keen on perilous adventures, but accompanies his brother anyway.
----
* Asexuality

[[folder:Sir Caroline]]
!!Sir Caroline
->'''Voiced by:''' Leslie Drescher

* InnocentlyInsensitive: Really doesn't pick up on Sir Caroline's offence when he tells her to smile more.
* LargeHam: Subtly is not his strong suit.

* DotingParent: To Arum. The Keep created Arum to take care of it and it dotes on him like a loving parent, telling him not to work to hard, singing him lullabies, and generally just being a mom to him. It also would do anything for him, up to hurting itself to protect him.
