* BothSidesHaveAPoint:
** In '72 Hours', Will and Carlton call out one another for their hypocrisy and mistreatment towards one another. Will is open about wanting to behave the way he wants, yet constantly shames Carlton for behaving the way he does because he's not 'black enough'. As Carlton says, Will treats him like he doesn't measure up to a 'blackness ruler' he carries around for a while. Will, on the other hand, brings up that Carlton treats him like he's an idiot simply because he doesn't speak or act the way he does. He rightly states that Carlton being angry at him for judging him is hypocritical as Carlton judges Will just as much.
** In another episode, Will and Carlton both vie for a business position they both desire. At the end of the episode, Will calls Carlton out on how he wants for everything for himself despite having so much already and is just being extremely selfish. Will isn't wrong that Carlton already did have much of he wanted and already had a position he was happy with, only wanting the new position because it was better than his current one rather than letting Will have it. This prompts Carlton to call out Will on his laziness and how he thinks he can just use his charm to get what he wants. Throughout the episode, Will did want the position, but relied on being charming rather than putting in actual work and proving why he deserves it, even going as far as to compare Will to his father, Lou. This predictably makes Will angry and states that he is NOTHING like his father.

Misuse; berserk button is about usually small stuff that would make someone unreasonably angry.

* BerserkButton: Do not compare him to his dad. Ever.
** Don't accuse his cousin of being a CategoryTraitor.
*** Several of Will's most emotional and distressed moments in the show tend to be times when Carlton seems to be veering from his innocent, dorky persona and becoming more hardened - doubles as AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther, as Will worries a lot for Carlton's safety, and despite his teasing, truly doesn't want Carlton to change.
** Don't ''under any circumstances'' try to get too close with Ashley if you're her boyfriend or date. Admittedly, the two have clashed over his overprotective side more than once.
** PlayedForLaughs with his cherished Willie Mays-autographed baseball. He doesn't take it well when he thinks it was stolen when the Banks' house is robbed, or when he learned that Ashley actually took it for baseball practice.
** Insulting his mother. While PlayedForLaughs, it likely stems from his issues with his absentee father.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He's very protective of Ashley, although he's more like "Big Cousin Instinct". When Ashley is a teenager in later seasons, she doesn't always appreciate this. He also has some shades of this with the more naive Carlton.

And when Phil, and Vivian to a lesser extent, blame him for Ashley's misbehavior, Will quickly points out it was Phil's temper that caused the young girl to run away; in the same episode, when Ashley tries to blame Will for her getting in trouble, Will correctly states that she shouldn't have been at an adult event while still being a teenager.

* RevengeBeforeReason: It's heavily implied in "Bullets over Bel-Air" that the reason Carlton bought the gun wasn't actually for protection, but for revenge, due to his faith in the system being shattered, he wanted to take matters into his own hands, find the mugger and kill him. It's also implied that Will had deduced that was precisely what Carlton was planning to do, which is why he demanded that Carlton hand over the gun in the first place.

** In one episode, Ashley's boyfriend is pressuring her to have sex, and she's confused and scared about what to do, especially since she's a virgin. With Vivian out of town, it falls to Hilary to give a version of TheTalk--and she's surprisingly mature and serious about it, giving genuinely wise advice and promising to support Ashley in whatever choice she makes.
** In "Just Say Yo," Uncle Phil makes Will tell the whole family that he was the source of the amphetamines Carlton inadvertently took, which nearly killed him. Hilary spends the entire scene giving Will a DeathGlare for the ages, never even ''blinking'' as her cousin breaks down and confesses. As the scene ends, she silently places her hand on Carlton's back to comfort him. Her lack of dialogue and obvious anger are deeply unnerving considering her usual attitude.
