* StrongAndSkilled: She started off as UnskilledButStrong, having never gamed in her life before, but was immediately shown to be exceptionally fast and strong, with speed that even Kirito couldn't keep up with. However after the two year TimeSkip, her fierce dedication to clearing the game granted her extensive skill and experience, where she ends up as the second/third best player in SAO, being only below Kirito and Heathcliff.

However after the two year TimeSkip, her fierce dedication to clearing the game granted her extensive skill and experience, where she ends up as the second/third best player in SAO, SAO and one of the top players on the Assault Team, being only just behind below Kirito and Heathcliff.Heathcliff. It's noted that her time on the Assault Team also translated over to ALO where she is able to use her experience there to make her character stronger in a new game.

* StrongAndSkilled: Boasts the status of being the greatest sniper in GGO and has the extensive knowledge about the game to match. Although she crosses over into WeakButSkilled a bit due to her stats making her a GlassCannon with little in the way of close quarters melee combat. Fully averted once she starts playing ALO where's she's undoubtedly WeakButSkilled, as her character has the lowest stats in the party, but she retains her ImprobableAimingSkills from her time in GGO.

* StrongAndSkilled: She boasts the feat of winning 77 consecutive duels, as well as the only player to best Kirito in combat. This is attributed to her full diving 24/7, therefore having more virtual experience than anyone else (including SAO survivors). Even entering a new game, she's so familiar with the mechanics that it's second nature to her, and quickly usurps whoever previously held the title of strongest player. Proof of her skill comes from her developing the 11-hit Original Sword Skill ''[[SignatureMove Mother's Rosario]]''.

* OvershadowedByAwesome: Klein is one of the top players in SAO, and his guild managed to survive SAO ''unscathed''. Not even the Knights of Blood can boast of a zero mortality rate. Not to mention that his Katana extra skill is considered incredibly rare due to having unclear conditions to unlock. He'd be TheHero in any other setting but for the fact that among his friends are the speedster in black and a lady warrior in white. He gets a chance to shine in the Caliber arc, where he proves to have some damn big brass balls.

to:

* OneOfTheKids: He's in his twenties, yet he gets along well with all of the younger characters, acting just as goofy and immature.

Added DiffLines:

* VitriolicBestBuds: Has shades of this with Kirito. While the two usually get along, Klein has a tendency to get on Kirito's nerves, usually in relation to girls, which leads to Kirito hitting him. Worth noting is Kirito is typically the one on the ''receiving'' end when he's with any other character, but with Klein it's the inverse.

->''"I don't want to lock myself in a room at the Town of Beginnings and slowly rot away. I'd rather stay the way I am until the last moment. Even if a monster beats me and I die... I won't lose to this game nor this world, no matter what."''

The main female protagonist. In SAO, she is the sub-leader of the frontline guild "Knights of Blood." Her speed and proficiency with a rapier is so advanced that she has earned the moniker of "The Lightning Flash."

----
* ActionGirl: Oh yes. More than a few times she's taken down foes Kirito couldn't handle.
* ActionMom: To the AI Yui she is both a loving parent and a strong warrior.
* AdaptationDyeJob:
** Goes from auburn/brunette in the novels to strawberry-blonde in the anime.
** Her Undine ALO Avatar has blue hair and hazel eyes in the web novels, but cyan hair and eyes in other adaptations.
* AdoptivePeerParent: She and Kirito essentially adopted the AI Yui as their daughter and they're both still teenagers.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: During the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc, she asks Kyouko if she's ashamed of her humble origins as the daughter of farmers. Kyouko understandably loses her cool at that.
* AttemptedRape: Falls victim to this during the climax of ALO. Sugou, as his avatar ALO Oberon, attempts to molest Asuna in front of an impaled-on-the-ground Kirito, before the later frees himself, obtains administrator rights from Kayaba's "digital ghost", and beats the crap out of Oberon.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: As the sub-leader of the "Knights of the Blood Oath"
* BadassAdorable: Hard to imagine the vice-commander of "[[BadassArmy The Knights of Blood]]" going {{Tsundere}} towards our hero? Just watch Season 1 Episode 5.
* BadassInDistress: During the early part of the ALO arc, she was trapped in the ALO virtual reality by her then-fiance Sugou, who kept her locked in a cage in the World Tree with various restrictions. [[DamselOutOfDistress She came very close to freeing herself, and her breakout attempt scored her an admin card that she dropped for Kirito and Yui, albeit unknowingly at the time; without this, they would've had no way to access the World Tree's upper levels and find her]].
* BareYourMidriff: As Titania, during the ''Fairy Dance'' arc. Sugou dresses her with a pretty skimpy outfit.
* BattleCouple: With Kirito, especially during the ''Aincrad'' arc. They show an uncanny understanding of each other in battle, and coordinate their movements perfectly.
* BeautifulDreamer: Very much so. Even when she just woke up also.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: If you fall into her good side, you'll see she is a really sweet girl. However, anger her and you'll be cut in half before you even see her coming.
* BigGood: In the non-canon ''Hollow Fragment'' game, she ends up leading the Knights of Blood and the rest of the raid team due to Heathcliff glitching out and disappearing.
* BigScrewedUpFamily: The ''Mother's Rosario'' arc briefly hints at this, as not only does she have a very strict mother and a father who's out of touch with his family, but all her various relatives are competing with each other and used to be with her, until she was trapped in SAO for two years.
* BreakoutCharacter: She may have her fair share of detractors, but Asuna is still widely considered to be one of the most influential anime characters in recent anime, and quite possibly the most iconic Sword Art Online character.
* BullyHunter: Just like her husband, she ''hates'' those who victimize the weak. When she sees some rogue players in SAO trying to steal "tax money" from some kids, she doesn't hesitate in teaching them a lesson.
* CareerVersusMan: Played with. Her mother expects her to marry a man wealthy enough so she can have the stability necessary to have a career of her own without financial risks, which is implied to be what she did. Asuna on her part, does want a career of her own, but also be with the man she loves.
* CharacterDevelopment: The biggest one in the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc. After the events in Aincrad, she discovers she doesn't have the same self-confidence in the real world as she has inside VR. Something that holds her back, specially in her relationship with her mother. Her friendship with Yuuki allows her to overcome her insecurities and mature as a person.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** In Volume 1 her ActionGirl traits were toned down, making her {{Tsundere}} traits stand out more. However, as the series marches on, her ActionGirl persona takes the forefront ([[BadassInDistress with the exception of during the [=ALFheim=] arc)]].
** The anime adaptation got hit pretty hard because of this in the first season. Since later volumes tell events from the Aincrad arc in a non-linear fashion, but the anime tells them in chronological order, Asuna's characterization flip-flops a bit. For example, in episode 11, Asuna shows that she is afraid of ghosts. However, previously in episodes 5 and 6 the story also involves the possibility of ghosts, and yet she doesn't even flinch. That's because while the events of episode 11 were originally told on volume 2 of the light novel series, the events of episodes 5 and 6 were told in volume 8.
* ChefOfIron: She's an extremely skilled swordswoman, and has mastered her Cooking skill.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** She has shades of this from time to time, though it's understandable considering how many women are around Kirito. One example is in episode 19 of season 2, when she finds out that the mysterious warrior challenging people to a duel wasn't a man as she envisioned, but a girl. She then gets mad at Kirito and thinks he lost on purpose because of that.
** In ''Hollow Fragment'' she gets huffy when Kirito doesn't introduce her to Philla as his wife. It quickly dissipates when Philla sincerely states her desire to be her friend.
** [[spoiler:She also gets jealous at Alice to the point where both of them are exchanging [[DeathGlare Death Glares]] at each other at the end of Alicization after she saw the latter attempting to make advances on Kirito by hugging him tightly while riding in his motorcycle.]]
* ClothingDamage:
** When a certain character [[spoiler: (Sugou)]] rips off her top with the intention of raping her in front of Kirito.
** Happens literally in "Accel World VS Sword Art Online", when she and Lisbeth come in contact with a mace made of a rare mineral that [[TheNudifier destroys armor]], and both of them end up [[GirlOnGirlIsHot falling on top of each other without a stitch on]].
* ColorMotif: She's almost always dressed in white inside the virtual world.
* CombatMedic: Her ALO build; as an Undine healer, she hasn't forgotten how to use her rapier. More than once she's switched from healing to taking down the level boss, earning her the rather embarrassing nickname of "Berserk Healer."
* CombatPragmatist: In her duel against Yuuki, she's not above cheap-shotting her with a gut punch.
* ComingOfAgeStory: Her development in the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc. She becomes a much more mature and self-assured person at the end.
* CoolBigSis: She acts this way to most younger characters, particularly towards Liz and Silica online ''and'' in real life, though Suguha and Sinon aren't excluded. She definitely acts as this towards Yuuki, who calls her "sis." The ''only'' younger character she isn't this towards is Kirito; around him and him ''alone'' she assumes the hidden persona of a sweet and vulnerable ''little'' sister, despite being a full year older than her husband.
* CryCute: When she blamed herself for Kirito almost being murdered by the Laughing Coffin masquerading as her bodyguard, and frequently afterwards because of her kind and sensitive personality.
* CurbStompBattle: When the 21-30th floors of Aincrad were opened in ALO, Asuna, her friends and fifty other players rushed right to the floor boss, where they watched in awe as Asuna single-handedly took out the boss, kicked it to the side, and rushed onward to the 22nd floor. The reason was to purchase the small wooden house in the middle of the forest, the same house herself and Kirito briefly lived in, back in SAO.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her SAO avatar, as well as her real life appearance.
* CustomUniformOfSexy: A rare case where it was customized by the ''other'' members of her guild. They guilt-tripped her into wearing it due to how much it cost.
* CuteBruiser: A cute girl who is also one of the most powerful VRMMO players ever known.
* DamselInDistress: In the Fairy Dance arc, she is locked in a cage within Alfheim Online by the BigBad, who happens to be the Game Master (so she couldn't merely log off) and rescuing her is the catalyst for the arc.
* DamselOutOfDistress: During Fairy Dance, she was no idle damsel. Despite knowing that she was in the hands of a man with full power over the world, complete access to her real body, and willing to use his power at the drop of a hat, she pretended to be subdued long enough to make him drop his guard, memorized the passcode to get out of her cage, and fought with everything she had to either log out or at least gain a weapon that could be used to fight back. It's true that she relied on Kirito, but both had relied on the other several times in the past, and since she was carefully monitored after her escape attempt, she was given literally no chance to do anything else.
* DeclarationOfProtection: She promises to protect Kirito after saving him from Kuradeel's murder attempt.
* DefiantCaptive: When she was Sugou's captive in ALO, he asked for her love. She said he'd have to make due with her "disgust and hatred."
* DemotedToSatelliteLoveInterest: Zigzagged. She is reduced from being a badass, give-no-fucks ActionGirl and one of the most powerful and well-known players in the original arc to a DamselInDistress in ALO and eventually, a cursory nod in GGO outside being Kirito's girlfriend. Inverted later on, since she gets major focus in the Calibur arc and becomes TheProtagonist in ''Mother's Rosario''.
* {{Deuteragonist}}:
** In the Aincrad arc, to the point where her and Kirito's relationship supersede [[TheMostDangerousVideoGame the arc's main plot]] for a time.
** Even more significantly in the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc where she actually takes over the role of main character from Kirito.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Near the end of the Aincrad arc, she dies in Kirito's arms after taking a fatal blow for him in the final battle. She gets better once Heathcliff is defeated but remains trapped in virtual reality due to Sugou's manipulations, triggering the ''Fairy Dance'' arc.
* DifficultButAwesome:
** Her speed, both attack and movement. In [=VRMMORPGs=], you can concentrate to speed up attacks significantly. However, if you do it even slightly incorrectly (which gets more and more likely the more you are trying to speed up the strike), you cancel the attack and get frozen for a split second. By the time Asuna first meets Kirito, she (as a rookie) has faster attacks that even he does. Similar rules (though usually without a possible freeze penalty) apply to movement, and Asuna has one of the highest movement speeds of any SAO player.
** Her cooking skill in SAO is maxed out. It's very difficult to max out any skill and cooking is non-combat. Even someone like Kirito, who spends all his waking hours fighting, only has a couple fighting skills maxed out. This means she can eat like a princess every day, with common ingredients, while other players have the bland fare sold by [=NPCs=].
* DontYouDarePityMe: In Volume 7, she's not exactly happy about being pitied by her cousins, knowing that it's in large part because they no longer consider her a rival to them in academics.
* DotingParent: Towards Yui; ever since Kirito developed a Mobile APP that allows her to maintain contact with Asuna in real life, the Mother and Daughter have become practically inseperable online ''and'' offline.
* DudeMagnet: She says she has received many confessions and proposals from guys. She also has two stalkers.
* DynamicEntry: Asuna appears, practically out of nowhere, running [[MaybeMagicMaybeMundane slightly faster than the system's speed cap]], and knocks the player-killer who had paralyzed and was slowly killing Kirito into the far wall.
* EarnYourTitle
** Lightning Flash: A rapier in one hand without a shield in the other is fast enough to kick a whole lot of ass, and she's no slouch with her feet, either. At one point, she briefly ''overcomes the system speed cap'' to save Kirito.
** Berserk Healer: [[DrinkingGame Take a shot]] every time she asks another healer in her party "[[CombatMedic Can I leave the healing to you?]]"
* EarlyBirdCameo: Aside from the opening and ending credits, Asuna had a blink-and-miss-it cameo in episode 1, where she is seen in the crowd listening to Kayaba's tutorial
* {{Fanservice}}:
** When Kirito asks to spend the night (just for comfort), she strips down to her bra and panties before he can explain.
** She has a bath scene in one episode of Season 2, during the ''Calibur'' arc.
** Has another bath scene in Ordinal Scale. The home release version includes side shots of her private parts.
** ''Accel World VS Sword Art Online'' goes furtherest of all. Lisbeth accidentally made a weapon that [[TheNudifier instantly destroys armor]], which includes all forms of clothing, both Asuna and Lisbeth fall over and brush against said weapon, ending up [[GirlOnGirlIsHot naked on top of each other]].
* FanDisservice: Sugou strips and molests her right in front of Kirito during ''Fairy Dance'''s climax, making it one of the few instances where her nigh-nudity is not played for titillation.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Both in the game, and real life, she's a fantastic cook who is also feminine.
* FirstGirlWins: Not counting Suguha, Asuna is the first of the many girls in Kirito's (virtual) life, and the only one to win his affections.
* FriendToAllChildren: She has unconditional kindness towards young children, as shown by her ineractions with the charges of the orphanage, Yuuki and of course, her daughter Yui.
* TheGift: Unlike many of the players trapped in SAO, Asuna never had any prior gaming experience. Yet despite by a newbie, she somehow has impossibly fast speed and reflexes, eventually becoming the second strongest player of SAO alongside Kirito. The only explanation for this is Asuna simply has natural talent.
* GirlsAreReallyScaredOfHorrorMovies: In ''Hollow Realization'' during a sleepover event, she utterly freaks out as Lisbeth is telling a ghost story. [[spoiler:She practically has a heart attack when she thinks a real ghost (actually Leafa who logged back in after accidentally logging out from falling asleep) pops up in the room, and latter refuses to let Kirito fall asleep until she does]].
* GodivaHair: When Sugou rips her top off, her hair still conveniently acts as a censor.
* GoGoEnslavement: Her outfit as Titania is pretty revealing. Sugou was probably the one who designed it that way.
* GoodIsNotSoft: She might be the nicest girl around, but if she has to get her hands dirty in order to protect those she cares about, she doesn't even flinch.
* GoOutWithASmile: In the final battle of the Aincrad arc, she dies smiling to Kirito after TakingTheBullet for him. Fortunately for her, Heathcliff's defeat and subsequent deletion of the Aincrad server brought her back from imminent death.
* HappilyMarried: To Kirito in SAO according to the game's mechanics. She describes it as the best time of her life. In the real world, they're simply dating.
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: In the anime, when Lisbeth wishes her good luck in her relationship with Kirito. [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in the novels, where once Liz has met Kirito, Asuna quietly confirms her interest in him instead.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Despite her incredible strength inside the virtual world, she doesn't consider herself "a real warrior", especially since the confidence she has in VR doesn't translate well in the real world for her.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Yuuki quickly becomes a special person to her, and they think of each as "sisters".
* ImageSong: She has a total of six. My Independent Destiny, white flower garden, Tomorrow’s Rosario, Sing All Overtures (which is sung by Kirito, Yui, Silica, Lizbeth, Leafa and herself), Sleepless Legend (Sung with the Sleeping Knights), and Sora e to Ateta Tegami (a duet sung with Yuuki).
* ImpossiblyDeliciousFood:
** Thanks to her SupremeChef abilities, she manages to make an Impossibly Delicious Stew with a ragout rabbit, a super rare S-Class ingredient found by Kirito.
** Everything that she cooks is this to Kirito, S-class ingredients or not.
* InformedAttribute: [[SubvertedTrope Just about]]. When she decides to face off against "Zekken", the others ask if she'll use "Asuna", her usual Undine account, or "Erika", her knife-swinging Sylph account. This is the first time it's even mentioned that she ''has'' another account, and it never gets brought up again until [[spoiler:she needs to talk to her mother in ALO and has her use "Erika" to speed things up]].
* InsistentTerminology: Even after they've been dating in real life for a year, she still insists on calling Kirito by his character name instead of Kazuto, his real name. It possibly extends to many more people she met online, considering she referred to Leafa (as opposed to calling her Suguha) once when talking to Kirito in the first episode of Sword Art Online II.
* InTheHood: During her introduction she hid her face with a hood. Kirito doesn't know what she looks like until the first floor boss raid.
* ItBeganWithATwistOfFate: Unlike the majority of the other players trapped in SAO, Asuna was never a gamer. The Nerve Gear actually belonged to her brother, who by chance had to take a business trip at the time of the game's launch. Asuna merely borrowed the gear for a day to take a look at the virtual world out of curiosity. However she ended up being trapped in said game for two years, where she would become one of the strongest players and second-in-command of the highest ranking guild.
* KickTheDog: Asking Kyouko if she's ashamed of living as the daughter of farmers in the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc.
* KnifeNut: Her other character in ALO, "Erika", uses knives instead of rapiers.
* KungFuWizard: Her ALO [[RedBaron moniker]] is the "[[CombatMedic Berserk Healer]]". Despite being a magic using Undine Healer, she's no slouch when it comes to melee combat either. She has a tendency to leave healing to someone else, drawing her rapier to help out in battle.
* LadyOfWar: Wields a rapier in SAO and has a fighting style focusing on speed, making for a very graceful fighter.
* LightIsGood: Wears white colors, in contrast to Kirito's DarkIsNotEvil.
* LightningBruiser: She's not nicknamed ''The Lightning Flash'' for nothing, you know? Not only is she absurdly fast, her strikes are ''insanely'' powerful.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: To Kirito. Their relationship is very serious, to the point that they cannot live on if one of them dies.
* LonelyAtTheTop: In SAO, as second-in-command of the Knights of Blood, she demanded iron discipline and a steel will among all the members, and thus never smiled in front of them as an example. However, while the members followed her orders, she noted that it was out of fear, not respect. This is also the reason why Asuna never joined another guild in ALO, not even a small one between Kirito and their mutual friends.
* LonelyRichKid: This is explored in the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc. Ultimately, it's difficult being a rich girl. She's forced to get involved in her parents' business related endeavors, has to deal with extremely high expectations and having her life personal restricted, and her parents have pretty much planned her entire life out even down to ArrangedMarriage. She was never a gamer prior to SAO and only borrowed her brother's Nerve Gear to visit the virtual world for a day, but ended up being trapped in there for 2 years.
* MagicalBarefooter: She is barefoot in her Titania attire, which only has a white strap as footwear. Probably enforced, as Sugou designed the clothing.
* MagicKiss: [[spoiler:While Kirito has most of his past memories already recovered prior to his fight against Gabriel, a kiss from her causes him to remember the Johnny Black incident.]]
* MamaBear: Yui is "our pride and joy". Don't threaten her.
* MasterSwordsman: In SAO she mastered the One Handed Rapier skill, a skill line considered very difficult to use.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane:
** About halfway through SAO, Asuna runs faster than the dexterity speed limit allows [[spoiler:to rescue Kirito]]. Also, she [[spoiler:stands up -- despite unbreakable in-game paralysis -- and takes Kayaba's fatal strike, dying (in-game), but saving Kirito. She recovers.]] [[KillerGameMaster Kayaba]] himself comments that this is impossible by the rules of the game; the rules ''that he coded''. PowerOfLove? Yes. RealityWarper? Maybe.
** In GGO, her touch also reminds Kirito that he has a handgun, not just a lightsaber. Despite the fact that he's in a game, and she's in the real world. Between what we've learned about Fluctlight, and the fact that Amuspheres (like Kirito was using) are less-powerful and don't block 100% of nerve signals, this probably isn't "Magic." (Unless Fluctlight counts as "Magic.") Still, you never know...
* MeaningfulName: Yuuki means "Courage" and Asuna can be translated as "For Tomorrow."
* MsFanservice:
** As Titania she's baring a lot of skin. Once again, this is Sugou's fault. Then again, we get little snippets of that later in the series like when she was talking to Kirito about a quest in ALO while she was in the bath where her big boobs were covered.
** It's more prominent in the ''Hollow Fragment'' game, where she gets quite a few nude scenes including [[ReluctantFanserviceGirl reluctant skinny dipping]] and wearing a NakedApron on Kirito's request.
* NiceGirl: Sweet, kind and caring. [[BewareTheNiceOnes Just don't get her mad]]
* OfficialCouple: With Kirito since the very first light novel. They were married in SAO (according to game mechanics) and start dating in real life.
* {{Ojou}}: She's quite rich, and her father owns RECTO, the parent company that made SAO and the Amusphere.
* ParentalSubstitute: To the AI Yui, who essentially adopted her and Kirito as parents.
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler: As Creation Goddess Stacia in the Alicization arc and played straight during Kirito's 200-year rule in UW.]]
* PluckyGirl: Not even capture by Sugou broke her spirit. If anything, it only made her steel herself even more against his advances.
* ThePowerOfLove: When asked by Kirito about her faster-than-possible dash in SAO, she declares it was "an act of love."
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: What she wears with her school uniform, reflecting her ojou status again.
* TheProtagonist: She has the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc to herself.
* RapunzelHair: It reaches her waist and it becomes even longer as Titania. In the former case, it could reflect her ojou status but the later is clearly Sugou's work. She's supposed to be Queen of the Fairies after all.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: In SAO, though apparently this was because she was new to MMO games at the time, and didn't realize that when the game was asking for a name, it meant an alias for her character name, not her real name.
* RedBaron: In SAO, she is known as the "Lightning Flash." In ALO, she's known as the "[[CombatMedic Berserk Healer]]."
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: Develops one with Yuuki during the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc. The "romantic" undertones are milder than in other examples, but Yuuki still lampshades it, suggesting that they should "get married" as a joke. Asuna even gets a bit flustered, and Yuuki has to calm her down reminding her that she has a boyfriend already anyway. ''Lost Song'' and ''Hollow Realization'' just adds on the subtext with Asuna getting ''depressed'' when she thinks she's becoming a burden on Yuuki's happiness due to her growing friendship with [[PluckyGirl Strea]] [[spoiler:and capped off with Yuuki giving her a ''bouquet of flowers'' to show how grateful she is for her help]].
* RoyalRapier: In SAO, her primary weapon and it fits considering that she is an OfficerAndALady. One of them is made by her friend Lizbeth, [[NamedWeapon "Lambent Light"]].
* SamusIsAGirl: In ''Aria in the Starless Night,'' Kirito originally mistook her for a guy until she speaks. Before that, she awed him in regards to the speed of her ''Linear'' skill. It's also possible that most of the people at the first boss battle didn't realize her gender until her cloak was discarded. This is also what happens in the manga version.
* SecondLove: To Kirito. This helps him get over Sachi's death and the fall of his first SAO guild.
* SeenItAll: Her reaction to Kirito's [[ImplausibleFencingPowers Spell Blast]], a feat of incredible control and precision that ''everyone'' thought was impossible? Mild amusement.
* ShamefulStrip: Gets subjected to this by Oberon in Episode 24, where he rips her top off before licking and sexually assaulting her in front of the incapacitated Kirito.
* SickeningSweethearts: Occasionally when she and Kirito are being especially affectionate in front of their friends. [[DeadpanSnarker Lisbeth]] at several points has expressed irritation at it.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Asuna becomes a couple with [[NiceGuy Kirito]]. The man who has proven to her of his bravery, humility, kindness, selflessness, and peaceful nature. One of the critical reasons why she developed feelings for him was because she felt that he gave her a place in SAO.
* SixthRanger: Becomes this to the Sleeping Knights guild in ''Mother's Rosario''.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Her Knights of the Blood Oath uniform does have sleeves, but they expose her shoulders.
* SorryThatImDying: She apologizes to Kirito as she lies dying in his arms after [[TakingTheBullet Taking The Sword Slash]] for him in the final battle of the Aincrad arc. She gets better.
* SpoiledSweet: She belongs to a rich family. Before starting SAO, her family lavished plenty of attention and affection on her, but at the same time she had high expectations to fulfill. However, she behaves friendly with everyone and is very kind to her family's house servants.
* TheStrategist: Her main role in the Sleeping Knights guild during the ''Mother's Rosario'' arc. She's the one to come up with the strategy to beat the floor boss and discovers its weak point.
* SupremeChef: In SAO, she mastered the non-combat cooking skill to make food that tastes like the real world. In the real world itself, she has the same level of skill. Kazuto certainly thinks so.
* SwitchingPOV: The ''SAO: Progressive'' manga tells the story from her point of view.
* TearsOfJoy: [[spoiler:In the Alicization arc, she is the first person to shed tears in response to Kirito's [[HesBack return]].]]
* TenderTears: Sheds these a few times, particularly after Yui's apparent death and upon learning of [[spoiler:Yuuki's tragic condition]].
* ThousandYardStare: As she never knew Kirito had joined a guild, she has this reaction after he tells her the story of what happened with the Black Cats of the Full Moon.
* ThroughHisStomach: She uses [[SupremeChef her cooking skills]] to win over Kirito. And, boy, does it work!
* TrademarkFavouriteFood: Asuna seems to have a thing for sweets. Especially cheesecake in ''SAO Progressive''.
* {{Tsundere}}: The "Sweet" or "Dere" type. Sweet and kind until you piss her off. Although in her first appearances she looks more like a "Harsh" or "Tsun" type, but that's just because at first Kirito gets on her nerves all the time.
* UnskilledButStrong: At the beginning of the Aincrad arc, Asuna is a complete newbie who isn't familiar with basic game features. Yet her speed was so fast that she was able to surprise Kirito.
* UptownGirl: Her family is quite rich while Kirito belongs to the middle-class. This is one reason why her mother objects to their relationship.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: If her saving Kirito from Kuradeel is any indication.
* WeaponOfChoice: Rapiers. In SAO, she wielded the custom-made "Lambent Light".
* WhenSheSmiles: Kirito says he will never forget the beautiful smile Asuna gave him after accepting his proposal.
* WomanInWhite: A non-malicious example example of this trope. She wears a white uniform with red trim after joining the Knights of the Blood Oath. Her ALO avatar wears a similar outfit, but with blue trim instead of red.
* WorldsBestWarrior: She is essentially the female equivalent of Kirito in Sword Art Online; and doubly so in Alfheim Online when she inherits [[spoiler: "Mother's Rosario", the Ultimate Technique and final legacy of her beloved friend Yuuki.]]
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Her avatar in ALO, an Undine. Her other ALO avatar Erika, a Sylph, has grass-green hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Her [[NonUniformUniform uniform]] as a member of the "Knights of Blood."

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AyanaTaketatsu (Japanese), Creator/CassandraLee (English), Azucena Miranda (Latin American Spanish), Greta Ruiz (European Spanish)

Kirito's younger cousin and sister by adoption, and the co-female protagonist of ''Fairy Dance'' (Volumes 3-4). In ALO, she is a Sylph warrior called Leafa and is well known for being one of the fastest flyers in the game. Like the other characters, she is smart IRL and in game, competent, caring and is well received by critics and fans for those reasons.
----
* ActionGirl: It's kinda a requirement in ALO. She's also one IRL, as her kendo proficiency carries over to ALO.
* AdaptationalCurves: In the web novels, Suguha was originally meant to have a smaller bust size and Kawahara didn't bother changing it. His editor suggested him to make her stacked in other adaptations.
* AffectionateNickname: Is called "Sugu" by Kazuto.
* AnguishedDeclarationOfLove: The English dub of Season 1 Episode 22 has her saying "I love you" towards Kazuto before telling him to leave her alone due to the trauma of discovering that he and Kirito are one and the same.
* BackToBackBadasses: Does this with Kirito when charging the World Tree.
* BadassAdorable: In real life, she's a cute and cheerful kendo champ. In the game, she's a mighty Sylph warrior that has HairOfGoldHeartOfGold.
* BoobsOfSteel: Has the [[https://i.imgur.com/1EUPpKa.jpg largest]] [[https://i.imgur.com/4FV4ZNn.jpg bust]] of all the girls, and in real-life is the most physically fit, being a kendo national quarterfinalist.
* ChekhovsGunman: Kirito mentions her in passing at the very beginning of the series when telling Klein about his family, and a bit more when telling Silica about how she reminds him of his sister. In the anime, she appears leaving for kendo practice in the first episode before her brother logs into SAO.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Gets a bit jealous in Season 1 Episode 20 when Sakuya and Alicia, the leaders of the Sylph and Cait-Sith races, get a bit too friendly with Kirito after he saves them from an ambush.
* ClothingDamage: Happens in "Accel World VS Sword Art Online", where during a quest to get honey, Leafa gets to close to a boss with a special attack that destroys armor, she has a difficult time covering up in front of Kirito.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: In real life, she has black hair and black eyes (sometimes blue).
* DramaticIrony: For the first half of the ''Fairy Dance'' arc, we know that Leafa is Suguha and Kirito is Kazuto. However, ''Suguha'' doesn't know that Kirito is Kazuto, and ''Kazuto'' doesn't know that Leafa is Suguha.
%%* GiantPoofySleeves: As Leafa.
%%* GreenEyes: As Leafa.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the anime, she's shown going off to kendo practice, and on the news, sobbing as she realizes Kazuto is trapped in the game.
* FamedInStory: Because of her speed and skill she is one of the Five Great Sylphs.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: She has cute animal bean bags in her room.
* HairDecorations: A pair of clips in real life, and a five-petal floral brooch holding her ponytail as Leafa. Other accessories she wears are headbands and hats in real life.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: As Leafa her avatar is blonde and remains kind hearted.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Had her own adventures in ALO before Kirito joined the game.
* HeroicBSOD: She doesn't take very well to the news that both the cousin/brother she was trying to forget and the Spriggan she came to love are the same person. She spends the end of Season 1 Episode 22 crying unto herself in her room.
* IDoNotLikeGreenEggsAndHam: She used to hate [=VRMMO=] games, particularly when her brother became trapped in one. She then gave ''[=ALfheim=] Online'' a try and discovered that she really enjoyed it.
* ImageSong: She has a total of four. Face To You (Suguha), Sky The Graffiti (Leafa), Sing All Overtures (which is sung by Kirito, Asuna, Yui, Silica, Lizbeth and herself), Memorial Calibur (which is sung by Silica, Yui, Lizbeth and herself).
* IJustWantToBeFree: She plays Alfheim Online because she loves the freedom to fly where-ever she wants. In the light novel, she referred to her Sylph duties and party responsibilities as "chains attached to her wings". This is why she had only minor hesitation in becoming a renegade.
* IKnowMortalKombat: Unlike Kazuto, she is an inversion of this trope. Her years of studying kendo give her a tremendous edge over other players.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Falls in love with Kazuto, but after seeing him with Asuna, she moves on to Kirito, only to discover that it's her brother/cousin all along.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: Her preferred weapon. Justified as she practices UsefulNotes/{{kendo}} in real life, and is ''very'' good (national-level middle school quarter-finalist).
* KissingCousins: Deep down, she wants this with Kazuto, being in love with him. [[DeconstructedTrope However, she also knows this is wrong, he would never go for it, and she can't tell anyone because of the very likely backlash]], since they're also adoptive siblings. So she tries to get over him by loving Kirito, [[{{Irony}} not knowing they're the same guy]]...
* LightningBruiser: Having years of experience in kendo have made her both strong IRL and in-game. Also happens to be the fastest flying player in ALO.
* LittleSisterHeroine: Technically younger-by-a-year cousin, but Kirito's relationship with Suguha is like this because they were raised together by her parents.
* LuminescentBlush: When she realized that she had fallen asleep in Kirito's bed, with cleavage visible, and that he had woken up before her and noticed.
* LovesMyAlterEgo: Falls in love with Kirito, unaware that he is actually Kazuto. Since she had fallen in love with Kazuto, only to give up on winning his affections, she takes this badly.
* MagicKnight: Skilled with using both attack magic and her katana.
* MsFanservice: The animated adaptation regularly puts both her real life and in-game counterpart in situations that would [[https://i.imgur.com/rjYLgiJ.jpg emphasize]] [[https://i.imgur.com/pwGboAy.jpg her]] [[https://i.imgur.com/NshV5Ja.png ample]] [[https://i.imgur.com/RK2n1n5.gif breasts]], not to mention the former being the first female character to be shown fully nude in a ShowerOfAngst (with the nether regions alone covered by CensorSteam).
* NightmareFetishist: She's the only person who finds Tonky (a jellyfish-elephant hybrid monster) cute.
* NotBloodSiblings: She falls in love with her adopted brother and [[KissingCousins cousin]] who was raised with her since they were infants, only to get her heart broken. Then gets it inadvertently broken ''again'' by him in ALO. They do eventually make up, and she goes back to affectionately referring to Kirito as "Onii-Chan" both in real life and in-game.
* OddFriendship: With Alice, who is also an expert swordswoman like her.
* OneManArmy: [[spoiler:In the Alicization arc, she tanks an entire army of 3,000 foreign players despite her injuries before finally passing out from exhaustion.]]
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:As Earth Goddess Terraria in the Alicization arc.]]
* RedBaron: She is referred to as the "Speed Holic". [[spoiler:Post-Alicization, she is known by the UW people as the "Green Swordswoman".]]
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: Shares this with Philia in the [[AlternateContinuity videogame continuity]], though it gets special focus in ''Hollow Realization'' during their shared events for preparing Leafa for a kendo tournament. Leafa grows to enjoy Philia's enthusiasm with training, [[spoiler:becomes depressed when she twists her ankle not because she can't compete, but because it means all of Philia's efforts were for naught]], and actually bursts into tears [[spoiler:when Philia chooses to give up a really rare item during a quest for a golden cup that looks like a trophy as a consolidation award]].
* {{Sleepyhead}}: In ''Hollow Realization'', Kirito claims she has the "superpower" of being able to fall within seconds of finding a comfortable spot. During one event with a sleepover, she literally plops down onto the bed and talks about how much fun they're going to have before literally falling asleep and disconnecting from the game (since the Amusphere automatically logs out anyone who falls asleep while playing) so fast that everyone but Kirito wonders what just happened. [[spoiler:She logs back in right as Lisbeth is telling a ghost story, which manages to freak all of the assembled out with her utterly oblivious]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Official translations give her avatar's name as "Leafa". However, typos in the anime occasionally write it out as "Leefa" and fan translations of the novels used "Lyfa". A literal reading of the kana used in the novels would give you "Rifa".
* StoryBreakerPower: She had to be side-lined for most of ''-Ordinal Scale-'' since she's a top-four national-level kendo practitioner within her age group. As a result, she could have ended the movie (which takes place in the real world using augmented reality) on her own within the first 30 minutes.
* SuperSpeed: Sylphs are naturally fast and she's faster than the standard Sylph. Before Kirito came along with his illegal NewGamePlus stats, no one could keep up with her maximum speed.
* SupportingProtagonist: The third light novel volume is partly written from her perspective, albeit in a limited third person focused on her (as opposed to Kirito and Lisbeth's first person segments). She provides her thoughts while helping Kirito on his rescue mission.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: When they're at school, she demands that Shinichi call her "Kirigaya-san" rather than her first name or username.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Has the personality of a tomboy, enjoys sports, but she's fragile in some ways and has cute knick-knacks involving a kitty backpack.
* TomatoInTheMirror: After Leafa agrees to party with Kirito to the World Tree, we get to see her log out from her perspective. Cut to ''Suguha wearing an Amusphere''.
* {{Tsundere}}: Kirito has noticed she can switch out from angry to sweet in mere moments.
* UglyCute: [[invoked]] Not her, but rather she has a fondness for creatures that other people think are "creepy" or "weird." Notably, she finds Tonki, a creature that is a cross between an elephant and a jellyfish, adorable.
* WeakButSkilled: Stat-wise she's below average because she spends little time grinding, farming etc. but this doesn't matter in Alfheim Online. It's primarily skill-based so she becomes one of the most powerful Sylphs on dent of her real world skill that translates into game skill. This puts her at a disadvantage against Sigurd in terms of stats and gear and their duels always turn into a protracted game of wearing each other down. She defeated him pre-series.
* YouAreWorthHell: In ''[=Infinity Moment/Hollow Fragment=]'', she obtained her own [=NerveGear=] and logged into SAO, knowing well that players trapped within can die, just so she can be reunited with her brother.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/MiyukiSawashiro (Japanese), Creator/MichelleRuff (English), Lupita Leal (Latin American Spanish), Silvia Cabrera (European Spanish)

The main female protagonist of ''Phantom Bullet'' (volumes 5–6). An [[ColdSniper elite sniper]] in ''Gun Gale Online'' who wields the rare anti-material rifle "PGM Hecate II". She later joins ALO to be with Kirito and his friends, where she becomes a Cait Sith archer. In GGO, she is definitely excellent with her in-game range skills and has strategies for in-game battle. Once angered, she does have a violent temper, and that can cause her to not think whether IRL or in-game. Like the other characters, she is smart IRL and in game, competent, caring and had been well received by critics and fans.
----
* TheAce: In ''GGO'', she's one of the best players, which includes both Japanese, and worldwide players, has one of the rarest guns in the game, and tends to be fairly popular amongst the male players as a result. She is a co-winner of the Third Bullet of Bullets competition, but since Kirito only joined to find Death Gun and used a sidearm exactly once, he doesn't count. This means she is ''the'' best gunner in ''Gun Gale Online''.
* ActionGirl: She is one of the few female gunners in the predominately male populated GGO.
* ActionDuo: Becomes this with Kirito after finally accepting him as her partner. She's more of the ActionSurvivor to his ActionHero.
* AdaptationDyeJob: Has two variations in her case:
** Shino: violet hair in the web novels, and a brunette in other adaptations.
** Sinon: blue hair in the web novels, and teal hair in other adaptations.
* AffectionateNickname: Is called "Sinonon" by Asuna. She remarks in a [[http://www.taptaptaptaptap.net/sao-qna-sinon-leafa-yuuki/#shi-3 Q&A session]] that it's the first nickname she's had.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She was stigmatized because she killed someone with a gun. Even her own ''mother'' abandoned her.
* AnArmAndALeg: While attempting to take down Behemoth, a body guard armed with a minigun, Sinon gets one of her legs blasted off while she leaps off a building, and ''still'' manages to get in a kill shot on Behemoth.
* TheApprentice: In the video game continuity, she is this to Kirito, who taught her the ins and outs of combat and life in [=VRMMOs=] after she was glitched into SAO. She still proudly refers to him as her mentor, even though Kirito and her clearly see each other as equals now.
* ArcherArchetype: Her ALO avatar, especially in the games.
* ArousedByTheirVoice: Volume 5 describes Sinon's voice as having a high, clear and cute sound and therefore aurally pleasing to [=GGO=]'s mostly male playerbase. For the anime and games, Creator/MiyukiSawashiro uses a lower tone.
* AttemptedRape: [[spoiler: Kyouji attempts this on her, as well as a MurderSuicide. Who knows if he would've succeeded if Kirito didn't intervene [=IRL=]]].
* BadassAdorable: Not only is she cute as a kitten, both in the real and virtual worlds, but is also a force to reckon with in terms of ranged combat, so much so ''Kirito'' dreads the day she gets Skekhinah, ALO's ultimate bow -- which, by Sinon's own estimates, would allow her to snipe from 200m, well beyond everybody else's melee/spell range. [[spoiler:In Alicization, she fought Gabriel head-on despite being overpowered.]]
* BadassBookworm: She states she spent a lot of time in the library reading and likely spends a lot of time there when she's not gaming. ''Accel World VS Sword Art Online'' also has her reading up while in the virtual world, where she dons a pair of reading glasses.
* BecomingTheMask: As Sinon she is badass, confident, and tough, which is a huge contrast to her real life fragile, timid Shino Asada. Shino's goal is to become as strong as Sinon is. She gradually edges closer following her CharacterDevelopment, with the first step she takes being getting over her phobia of guns.
* BladeOnAStick: In the video game continuity, in addition to her [[ArcherArchetype skill with the bow and arrow]], she prefers using polearms for melee combat.
* BoomHeadshot: Her specialty, since she ''is'' a sniper.
* BoyishShortHair: The side tail variant in real life and in-game she sports this hairstyle, as reflective of her tomboyish manner and hobby.
* BrokenAce: None of her GGO skill helps her with her massive phobia of guns and PTSD. Her interactions with Kirito through the [=BoB=] tournament partially make her overcome her fears, though she admits it'll take some time to fully heal.
* BrokenBird: Her self-defensive killing of a robber haunted her for many years, causing her multiple psychological hang-ups.
* BrokenTears: At the climax of her breakdown after [[spoiler:seeing the Type 54 pistol as Sinon, she's reduced to a sobbing wreck after Kirito dissuades her from chasing Death Gun on her own]].
* CatGirl: Her appearance and mannerisms are often compared to those of a cat. Fittingly, she rolls a Cait-Sith in ALO.
* CharacterDevelopment: See DefrostingTheIceQueen below.
* CharacterTic: When wanting to distance from others she pulls up her scarf to cover her mouth, in both real life and GGO.
* ChekhovsSkill: Early in GGO, Sinon explained to Kirito that Snipers get a free shot that's undetected by the game's targeting system with every shot after being treated the same as everyone else's. [[spoiler:Later during the BOB, Sinon takes a shot at Death Gun but misses him. During Kirito's final battle with Death Gun, Sinon uses this to trick Death Gun into thinking she was going to snipe him, allowing Kirito to score a hit and defeat him.]]
* ChoiceOfTwoWeapons: She's the only character in the videogame continuity canonically shown using two entirely different weapons (bow and spear) between different games and being skilled with them.
* ColdSniper: At first, until warming up a little to Kirito.
* ContrastingSequelProtagonist: She diverges from Asuna and Leafa in that she is not a love interest for Kirito and is instead defined by her own DarkAndTroubledPast. She also started off on bad terms with him due to discovering he was actually a guy, and she wasn't introduced in a fantasy setting video game.
* CoolGuns: In the anime, a Glock 18 takes the place of the [=MP7=] as her sidearm.
* CrossPlayer: Sinon attempted this at first, when she got into GGO. She chose male, and her randomly generated avatar was a "bland, crude male body". However, GGO prevents such actions, and she was forced to play as her actual gender; the random generator produced the Sinon we know today.
* CryCute: Lets down her cold facade down and broke down sobbing a few times, such as after [[spoiler:Kirito dissuades her from chasing after Death Gun by herself]], and after [[spoiler:Mizue hands her a thank you letter for saving her and her mother during that robbery four years ago]].
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Her in-game Sinon avatar has teal hair and teal eyes to match, although her eyes are a lighter shade of blue.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: As an eleven-year-old, she accidentally killed a post office robber with his own gun following a GunStruggle. The experience traumatized her so much that she developed PTSD and a strong hoplophobia. Afterwards, she's shunned as a murderer by not only her schoolmates ''but her own mother'' as well.[[note]]Though to be fair, by that point, her mother has been already traumatized from [[spoiler:helplessly watching her husband bleed to death in a car accident]].[[/note]] She started playing GGO to try and get over her phobia, but it's only partially successful. She also has a replica gun in her room, but she's not able to overcome her fear.
* DarkSecret: In the [[AlternateContinuity video game]] continuity, she never reveals her past with the bank robber until ''Hollow Realization'' out of fear that Kirito and the gang will reject her, despite having survived SAO with them. [[spoiler:And even then she only does so after Kirito learns her secret from Richter (Kyouji) blabbing about it and he himself tells her about how he killed several members of Laughing Coffin and [[ILetGwenStacyDie let Sachi die]]]]. When she finally does tell them, she fully expects they'll abandon her...[[TrueCompanions only for them all to tell her]] [[YouAreNotAlone she is not alone]].
* DefrostingTheIceQueen:
** In the real world, Shino is a ShrinkingViolet burdened by the [[SurvivorGuilt guilt of having killed a person]]. Playing GGO she grafted another online persona as Sinon, who was confident and tough. However encountering Kirito and her anger towards him allowed her real life self to become emotional as well. Her experience with Kirito, and seeing him being strong despite being faced with a similar past as herself, only allowed her to become increasingly tougher until finally she GrewASpine and stands up to her bullies.
** This also holds true in-game for Sinon, who is typically ice cold and emotionally distant, but grows out of this once again with Kirito. After getting over initial distrust, Sinon finally accepts Kirito as her partner and is happy to work with him and is even grateful for everything he did for her. Though she retains holds a [[TheStoic stoic demeanor]] and a [[DeadpanSnarker snarky personality]].
* DeliberateValuesDissonance: Everyone in the series - ''even Shino herself'' - considers her a "[[YouKeepUsingThatWord murderer]]"; her friends simply consider her a SympatheticMurderer. When she was still waist-high to an adult, she and her mother visited a post office just as it was robbed by a gunman. When the gunman threatened to shoot her mother, she jumped on him and started [[GunStruggle wrestling for the gun]]. She survived - the robber didn't. In most of the world, she'd be called a ''hero'', but in Japan, where both ChildrenAreInnocent and DoesNotLikeGuns are taken UpToEleven, that makes her a murderer.
* DemotedToExtra: After the "Phantom Bullet" Arc, her character is still featured but has much lesser importance to the plot and she is largely a background character.
* DifficultButAwesome:
** A sniper rifle has one of the highest single-shot damage outputs in GGO, but more importantly, the first shot taken by a sniper from stealth does not give the target any warning or window to dodge. However, it is also one of the hardest weapons to actually hit with: the distance creates a low base accuracy, and the shooter must keep their pulse as low as possible to maximize their chance to hit. Furthermore, a sniper loses their primary advantage (surprise) after the first shot, making it ill-suited in 1v1 battles or when outnumbered.
** This carries over to archery in ALO. The game has no automated systems to aid the accuracy of an archer (unlike GGO), and arrows are affected by gravity and wind. But unlike magic, archery is a ranged weapon with no casting time; a master archer could defeat any melee opponent before they even managed to get within attack range. Since Sinon has already mastered long-distance shooting in GGO and all of the games created from The Seed use the same physics engine, she masters the bow very quickly.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Downplayed. She is far from androphobic, but whenever the male demographic of GGO is brought up, it's always about them being perverted.
* DudeMagnet: By virtue of being one of the rare few female players in the male-dominated GGO, she catches the eyes of them easily, much to her chagrin. Helps that she's wearing an [[{{Stripperific}} outfit that shows just the right amount of skin]].
* DullEyesOfUnhappiness: In the anime, Shino's eyes are a muted brown. However, as Sinon they are a vibrant turquoise. She's happier in the game world before joining Kirito's group of friends [[note]] Joining said group made her happier in both worlds [[/note]].
* EarnYourTitle: She's dubbed "[[ColdSniper Ice Sniper]]", for her cold distant personality and being the best sniper in GGO.
* EyeColourChange: As Sinon her turquoise eyes became teal whenever she activates her long range vision mode.
* TheFashionista: Her outfits in-game are pretty stylish like the other female characters. IRL, she wears casual clothes and sometimes a brown jacket and a scarf. Whether IRL or in-game, she can wear gloves with her outfits.
* FireForgedFriends: With Kirito after he helped her become more self-confident and [[spoiler:when he saved her from Shinkawa]].
* FreakOut: Whenever she suffers a breakdown caused by her [[TraumaButton trigger]].
* FriendlySniper: While she typically carries a calm and collected disposition, she is also a genuinely kind-hearted person.
* TheGadfly: Only really applies between Kirito and herself. Kirito teases Sinon, and Sinon finds a way to get him back.
* GenreSavvy:
** In Episode 2 of the 2nd season, she is discussing with Dyne she is getting bad vibes from an unknown player in the back of a party they were about to ambush but is ordered to not shoot him first. Turns out her intuition was right when the unknown member was [[GatlingGood Behemoth]].
** This is zigzagged in terms of her guessing Death Gun's actual username. She guessed the wrong player, but was correct in thinking that he was invoking a MeaningfulName.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When her team ends up in a counterattack by top player Behemoth, her leader Dyne is quick to give up and even suggest logging out since they'd die either way, Sinon snaps back at him and encourages the entire team to fight to the last man. Which they do.
* GlassCannon: Her character build in GGO focuses on STR and AGI, at the expense of VIT. This translates to ALO as well, where she's a ranger capable of doing heavy damage with arrows but has little in the way of close range melee attacks or defense.
* TheGlassesComeOff: In Episode 14 of Season 2, as Shino she finally stands up to her bullies and demonstrates her change of self by taking off her glasses when confronting them.
* GunTwirling: Shino gives a little flourish when she takes the pellet gun away from the school bully ... who'd tried to ''shoot her'' with it. Then she demonstrates that she's no longer phobic about guns IRL. Semi-justified by the weapon (A) being an airsoft model and (B) still having the safety on.
* GratuitousEnglish: She often spouts short phrases in English, many of them are [[PreMortemOneLiner Pre-Mortem One-Liners]].
* HeIsNotMyBoyfriend: She invokes this after Kirito (wisely) asks her to clear up any potential misunderstandings. Whether or not she actually ''does'' develop a romantic interest in him is left ambiguous, but there is some back-and-forth teasing between them. She also {{troll}}s him (in a glorious fashion) by asking him to "always think of me" when using Excalibur... in front of ''all'' his other love interests. Only the twitching of her Cait-Sith tail gives away her laughter.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Suffers a massive one when she realizes that [[spoiler:the pistol that Death Gun uses to kill his targets is the same model of pistol she used to kill the bank robber years ago.]]
** Suffers a slightly smaller one in ''Hollow Realization'' when [[spoiler:Kyouji, under his "Richter" avatar, starts talking about how she killed the bank robber ''right in front of Kirito'' and [[YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame calling her amazing]]. It's so bad that she nearly cuts off her friendship with Kirito and the others out of fear of what they'll think of her and even stays out of VR for several days]].
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Literally. Although she created an ALO character to play with Kirito and her new friends, she still mainly plays GGO, where she is one of the top players and goes on her own adventures in that game world.
* HellishPupils: If you look closely with her Sinon avatar, she's got slitted pupils, which further add in with her catlike mannerisms.
* HypercompetentSidekick: It is implied she is this to Dyne in their squad. In the Bullet of Bullets tournament, she casually notes he forgot to check his back when taking aim at him and has a much better performance of the two. In addition, she has also shown better judgment if the fight with Behemoth is anything.
* IdenticalStranger: Downplayed [[GenderFlip gender-flipped]] example and uncommented upon, but her real-life appearance (if she didn't have side tails, removed her glasses, and dyed her hair) is uncannily similar to [[{{Bishonen}} Kirito's]] own.
* IdentityAmnesia: In ''Infinity Moment/Hollow Fragment'', the glitching that sent her into SAO was so bad for a time she couldn't even remember her ''real name'', and only knew her in-game name of "Sinon" because it was in her menu. She got better.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: While she often denies this, at heart, she's lonely and wants friends who accept her for who she is. As a result, she's fairly quick to trust Endou, even though it ends up being misplaced, and is touched that Asuna and Liz want to become friends with her, although she worries how they'll react when they learn of her past (not yet aware that they already know).
* ImageSong: She has a total of three. "SOLITARY BULLET" (as Sinon), "RELIEF BULLET" (as Asada Shino), and "BLAZING BULLET" (Sinon and Kirito).
* ImprobableAimingSkills:
** Manages to hit a falling sword at 200m with a bow whose maximum effective range was 100m, while falling herself, while surrounded by falling ice shards, while using a spell that distorts the arc of her arrow. It's assisted by her knowledge of shooting moving targets and how this requires a deflection shot or leading the target.
** ALO players consider Shino's normal attacks to be this; she plays as a Cait Sith specced for long range vision, and regularly takes down enemies 100 meters away by arching her arrows. Shino doesn't consider it anything special, since she came from GGO and regularly engages from beyond 1000 meters with her Hecate II.
** It still isn't enough for her. She's hoping to obtain the legendary bow Shekhinah because she estimates with that bow she should be able to ''consistently'' snipe from 200 meters away.
* ItGetsEasier: [[SubvertedTrope No]], [[{{Deconstructed}} it doesn't]]. Try as she might, Shino just cannot take her mind off her accidental homicide by playing in GGO. When playing she tends to treat her Sinon avatar as a placebo effect instead, which means that when she attempts to pick up a gun in the real world using the same logic, she [[HeroicBSOD tends to suffer as a result]].
* InstantExpert: In ALO, it took her all of one day to fully master the bow. It's justified in that ALO and GGO use similar mechanics for ranged weapons. It took a little longer in the video game continuity, but justified there in that she was dropped into SAO with no prior training whatsoever and needed specific guidance from Kirito in order to figure out a weapon that she could use quickly.
* MageMarksman: Her ALO character uses magic to supplement her archery skills with enchanted {{Trick Arrow}}s.
* MaleGaze: Plenty of shots are dedicated to admiring her tight in-game outfit, including a first person view from one of her party members gazing at her legs and breasts.
* MangaEffects: It may sound redundant as this is nothing new to the series or any form of Japanese media, but Shino/Sinon expresses facial iconography IRL and in-game throughout the series.
* MarshmallowHell: Inadvertently ends up receivingf this from [[BoobsOfSteel Leafa]] in ''Hollow Realization''. They were trapped in a room with a DescendingCeiling and Sinon, in order to keep Leafa from getting crushed, tackled her to the ground and ended up...in a [[https://i.ytimg.com/vi/hH0F9KaKyEM/maxresdefault.jpg very favorable position]].
* {{Meganekko}}: She wears glasses in the real world not to correct her eyesight, but because they were made of ballistic-resistant [=NXT=] polymer and [[SecurityBlanket wearing them gives her a small sense of protection]].
* MinorLivingAlone: She lives in an apartment by herself. It's [[DeconstructedTrope deconstructed]] as she has difficulties paying for her own expenses, Endou ends up "befriending" her to take advantage of her apartment, and [[spoiler:she becomes yet another target for Death Gun because she lives alone in a place that they can sneak into easily]].
* MistakenForGay: Kirito, who is mistaken for a woman, points this out when a feed cam catches the two together in a cave. She replies that she doesn't mind if it means guys will stop hitting on her.
* MsExposition: She explains much of how GGO works for Kirito (and the audience).
* NotSoStoic: Despite her usual icy cold demeanor, Sinon can get emotional in certain situations. Seeing Death Gun triggered a panic attack in her, and of course there's Kirito who gets on her nerves several times.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: She becomes obsessed with defeating Kirito in a fair fight, thinking that doing so will make her strong like he is, and commands him to not lose until she can beat him. This later evolves into WorthyOpponent and Sinon decides against fighting Kirito unless it's a ''fair'' fight (as he had just been heavily damaged after battling Death Gun), so she resorts to ending the tournament in a draw.
* OnlySaneWoman:
** Despite being the second youngest out of Kirito's party (with only Silica being younger), she is easily one of the maturest present. She's less excitable than the rest and more likely of being sensible.
** This trope is even more prominent in the [[AlternateContinuity video game continuity]], which isn't canon, and in that continuity, out of the whole RagtagBunchOfMisfits that make up your party, she definitely comes across as the most rational, despite keeping her personality traits from other SAO media intact. It helps that most of her humor comes directly from [[DeadpanSnarker snark]].
* OrnamentalWeapon: It's a downplayed case here. She carries a machine pistol as a sidearm, but outside of the opening for the ''Phantom Bullet'' arc, she's only seen using it once, providing covering fire for her fellow squadmates during their attack on a Mob Hunter group. She tries to use it in two more instances; when Kirito sneaks up on her, she draws it but gets pinned, and [[spoiler:when she tries to pull it on Death Gun, she goes into shock on seeing his Black Star.]]
* OutOfFocus: She disappears almost entirely during ''Mother's Rosario'' aside from a few cameos.
* PhysicalGod: [[spoiler:As Sun Goddess Solus in the Alicization arc.]]
* PyrrhicVictory: She says her victory over the monster hunting squad at the start of the arc is essentially this, as while her team won, they should have been able to achieve a crushing victory given their advantages.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: Bases her character name on her given name of Shino, removing the "h", and adding an "n" at the end.
* RedBaron: In GGO, she is known as "Hecate", and sometimes "Goddess of the Underworld", [[EarnYourTitle from both her anti-material sniper rifle and the goddess]].
* ReiAyanamiExpy: She has short hair, fair skin, a DarkAndTroubledPast, and an emotionally-distant demeanor that defrosts thanks to the main character. Her MMORPG counterpart Sinon even has the blue hair.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: She wears a muffler as part of her GGO ColdSniper avatar.
* SecurityBlanket:
** Her glasses, which were advertised as being made of bulletproof material. In the anime, [[ScaryShinyGlasses they turn shiny]] when she is putting up an emotional barrier. [[spoiler:She finally discards them when confronting Endo for the last time]].
** She is attached to the Hecate II. Sinon [[CompanionCube sometimes talks to it]] when she needs to calm herself and prides herself on being one of the few players capable of wielding it.
** As both Shinon and Sinon, she pulls a scarf over her mouth when she no longer wishes to talk.
* SequenceBreaking: How she obtained the Hecate II. Sinon somehow fell into a dungeon much higher level than her but [[LoopholeAbuse discovered she could snipe the enemies and boss out of their attack range]], so she did just that. Doing so ended up netting her the rare weapon.
* SeriousBusiness: She really takes all of her moves in gaming highly, to the point where her leader suggested to log out of a losing game, she tells him off.
-->'''Leader''': ''Are you nuts? This is a game, for Christ's sakes! Think about it, even if we charged 'em, we'd just die!''\\
'''Sinon''': ''THEN DIE! It IS a game, so you can at least have the balls to face death here instead of whinin'!''
* ShortRangeGuyLongRangeGuy: Being a sniper, she is the long-ranger to Kirito's short-ranger because he uses a laser sword.
* SmallGirlBigGun: Sinon is small in size, so much so that her avatar is described as "doll-like". The Hecate II is longer than she is tall.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Played with. She wears glasses in real life and is a BadassBookworm. However it should be noted that she doesn't actually need glasses and wears them as a SecurityBlanket. However in the non-canon games she actually dons glasses in-game as Sinon when she needs to read something.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She is one of the rare female players girl in GGO. For this reason she constantly has to deal with guys [[MaleGaze hitting on her]] and becomes interested in Kirito when at first she mistakes his avatar for that of a female. Throughout the entirety of the "Phantom Bullet" Arc only one other female player is seen, Hunter X, who was a minor character without a single line of dialogue.
* SniperRifle: In GGO, an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FR_F2 FR-F2]] .308 sniper rifle, before upgrading to the [=FR-12,7=] (otherwise known as the [=PGM=] Hécate II) .50 [=BMG=] anti-material rifle that she managed to get as an ''extremely'' rare drop.
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: Her relationship with Kirito, after she finds out he's a boy and after GGO, is rife with mutual teasing.
* SplitPersonality: Shino views herself and Sinon as this, believing that if Sinon becomes powerful enough, [[SplitPersonalityTakeover the strength of "Sinon" will supersede the weakness of "Shino"]]. [[spoiler:They're not, as proven when "Sinon" becomes paralyzed by the sight of the Type 54 pistol. If anything, "Sinon" is akin to a placebo effect]]. Though this comes into play again and is left ambiguous, where [[ImagineSpot a scene within Shino's mind]] has a representation of Sinon approaching Shino and encouraging her to be strong and keep fighting.
* TheStoic: She tries being this as Sinon. It's partially justified by GGO's game mechanics, in which a player's accuracy increases the slower their heartbeat, so she deliberately keeps herself icy calm during combat to maximize effectiveness. However, she takes herself a tad too seriously and cracks pretty easily whenever she gets inconvenienced, and suffers a massive breakdown after seeing Death Gun's Type 54 pistol, culminating in her breaking down sobbing when [[spoiler:Kirito dissuades her from chasing Death Gun on her own]]. It becomes more apparent after joining Kirito's close circle of friends, where she's typically the calmest when it comes to any situation.
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: Upon joining ALO, her long-range skills translated into her becoming the archer of Kirito's party. The difference in setting justifies this; guns don't exist in ALO.
* StressVomit: Whenever she gets [[TraumaButton triggered]], she tends to throw up.
* {{Stripperific}}: She actually wears quite a bit, but her GGO outfit shows off skin in ''just'' the right places, especially her backside.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She seems to keep her distance from most players, but, as seen with Kyouji and Kirito, she can be friendly and even lighthearted.
* SympatheticMurderBackstory: As explained in her DarkAndTroubledPast, she may be a killer but she's not a monster because of it.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: This was the initial dynamic she had with Kirito after learning of the latter's true gender, but she eventually warms up to him. She also has this dynamic with Dyne's team, whom she doesn't think much of, but tolerates to get intel on the competition for [=BoB=].
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Averted. She's been in therapy ever since the botched robbery, but it didn't really do her any good as they were all ''Japanese'' therapists who fully embraced their culturally-enforced disgust for guns -- and those who use them, even accidental killers such as herself. Thanks to all of that, she has a case of PTSD so intense a schoolyard bully can set off a panic attack simply by ''pointing a finger at her and saying "bang".'' What straightens her out after four years is [[spoiler:meeting Sachie Oosawa, the then-pregnant teller the gunman threatened, and though she still can't get over her trauma over witnessing a shooting, let alone meeting the shooter, she feels indebted to Shino for saving her and her then-unborn baby -- now four-year-old Mizue, who gives her a doodle of herself and her parents with the words "[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics Shino onee-san]], [[EpiphanyTherapy thank you for saving mama and Mizue]]"]].
** In the [[AlternateContinuity video game continuity]], this is partially why she ended up in SAO to begin with. She volunteered to use the Medicuboid because it was being tested as a potential therapy aid for those with traumatic pasts. When SAO started glitching up [[spoiler:due to Strea]], it registered several [=NerveGear=]-derived ports as SAO players, and thus she was forcibly dragged in.
* TraumaButton: Guns in general, pistols in particular, bring back the memory of her past trauma and cause her to FreakOut and throw up.
* TrickArrow: Arrows with special magical properties exist in ALO. She, being a sniper in a gun-oriented game, exploits this ability to be able to perform to her full potential in a more fantasy-oriented game.
* TrueCompanions: After getting over her initial dislike of Kirito, she finally accepts him as her ''partner'' when they work together to take down Death Gun. Later she is officially inaugurated into Kirito's ALO party and becomes friends with everyone there.
* {{Tsundere}}: After getting along with Kirito when thinking he's a female player, she starts acting cold and angry towards Kirito after finding out his true gender for the first time right before the [=BoB=] qualifiers, but still helps him out.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Sure, there is forgiving [[spoiler: your attempted rapist]], and then there is ''still'' caring enough for him as a friend to [[spoiler: visit him in prison to try and help and save him as a person]]. Shino may be a little cold and rough around the edges, but she really is a good kid. She does so again in ''Hollow Realization'' [[spoiler:where despite Kyouji attacking her and gaining an orange cursor, she still wants him to understand who she really is and be her friend]].
* VomitDiscretionShot: Her fear of guns is so bad that it can cause her to puke, though the audience is not shown it.
* WeakButSkilled: In ALO, she has the lowest stats in Kirito's party, since her avatar there is only two weeks old. She compensates with her ImprobableAimingSkills, and does ''very'' well. She was also this in ''Hollow Fragment'', as she was forcibly dragged into the game alongside Leafa by the time everyone else had already reached Floor 76, but unlike Leafa didn't even have any prior outside experience in fighting to draw upon, which was partially why she took up the bow for long-range combat. Once again, she does ''very'' well despite these limits.
* WeaponOfChoice: "PGM Hecate II" which was a difficult boss drop.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: She's the second youngest out of Kirito's party (only Silica is younger, while Leafa is the same age but is a few months older), she is by far the maturest and calmest, rarely joining in the other's antics.
* WithFriendsLikeThese: It's revealed in the light novel version of Volume 5 that she used to be "friends" with Endou and her group, but it turns out that they really wanted to take advantage of her apartment so that they could party there. When Shino found out and put her foot down, they retaliated by using her traumas against her.
* WorldsBestWarrior: She is the greatest current gunner on Gun Gale Online, bar none.
* WorthyOpponent: Sees Kirito as one, and wants to face him in a future Bullet of Bullets tournament so they can finally have a proper battle. Though she'll never admit it, she greatly admires his skill, and even secretly bought her own lightsaber to practice deflecting bullets, with limited success.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Her avatars from GGO and ALO have greenish-blue hair. It fits with the science fiction/fantasy setting.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: When she learns that [[spoiler:Kyouji, who was the closest thing she had to a friend in real life for a long time,]] became interested in her because she killed someone, she doesn't take it well at all.
* UnknownRival: She views Kirito as her rival ever since he defeated her though the latter doesn't know about it.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/AoiYuuki (Japanese), Creator/EricaMendez (English), Eva Andrés (European Spanish)

The {{deuteragonist}} of ''Mother's Rosario'' (Volume 7) and the energetic, cheerful Imp leader of the Sleeping Knights guild. She holds a street duel competition, hoping to find someone strong enough to help her guild solo a floor boss, an achievement which will mark their names on the Monument of Swordsmen.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: While she's fairly attractive in the web novels, she's even more prettier and sexier in other adaptations, but only in her ALO avatar.
* AffectionateNickname: Her older sister calls her "Yuu."
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: [[spoiler:She was socially ostracized because of her having AIDS.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Duels with Kirito twice and wins both rounds. It is debatable (in-universe even!) who is actually more skilled, as Kirito never fights her with his signature style (and Lisbeth theorizes that Kirito never fights "seriously" anymore unless lives are on the line, and thus didn't go after her the way he did with Heathcliff and Death Gun), but her reaction speed and [=VRMMORPG=] experience are significantly better than his. Kirito even stated that had she been in SAO, the system would have instead granted her the dual blades ability due to her superior reflexes.
* AlwaysWithYou: [[spoiler: She lives on in the [=OSS=] she gave to Asuna before she died. Also, her spirit appeared to Asuna to help her against the FinalBoss in ''Ordinal Scale''.]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: She shares a RomanticTwoGirlFriendship with Asuna in ''Mother's Rosario'', and is practically a member of Kirito's UnwantedHarem in ''Lost Song''. Turned up a notch in ''Hollow Realization'', where Yuuki forms a close friendship with fellow GenkiGirl Strea, presents a bouquet of flowers to Asuna in one event, and has special one-on-one events and pillow talk scenes with Kirito like the other heroines.
* AngstySurvivingTwin: Averted for the most part, but shows hints of this when she gets strongly attached to Asuna due to her resemblance to her twin sister.
* BadassAdorable:
** She's probably one of the kindest and most cheerful people you'll ever meet in ALO. She's also the most powerful player in the game and the only person who can beat [[TheAce Kirito]] in a fair duel.
** In ''Lost Song'' and ''Hollow Realization'', this character trait is amplified by the simple fact that she is living life to the full, no longer shackled by an impending death.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: When she was being denied access to the Floor 27 boss, she responds by trouncing one of the grunts blocking the way.
* BirdsOfAFeather: With [[PluckyGirl Strea]] during the events of ''Hollow Realization'', with both of them being so upbeat and cheerful they practically rebound off each other to the point where Asuna wonders if she's actually being a burden on Yuuki, [[spoiler:[[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming until Yuuki presents her with a bouquet of flowers Strea helped her with in order to thank Asuna for her help on a real-world test]].]]
* BladeSpam: Her SignatureMove is the Mother's Rosario, which is an 11-hit Original Sword Skill.
* BigSisterWorship: She looks up to Asuna as a role model and a surrogate sister. She evidently had this relationship with her late real twin sister as well.
* CharacterDevelopment: At the beginning of Sister's Prayer, hardly as upbeat or optimistic as she is by the time of Mother's Rosary, but by the end, she's on the way to founding the Sleeping Knights.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Is an Imp and wears mostly dark colors but is perpetually cheerful.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Yuuki earns the respect and friendship of ''everyone'' she crosses blades with by defeating them. Asuna, for instance, became her surrogate sister after their duel.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of the Mother's Rosario arc. In the anime, she takes over the EvolvingCredits opening during the arc.
* DoNotGoGentle: Her main motivation for wanting to carve the names of the Sleeping Knights onto the Monument of Swordsmen [[spoiler:before AIDS claims her and the rest of Sleeping Knights also pass on]].
* DoomedByCanon: [[spoiler:Averted in the video game canon, as Yuuki doesn't die.]]
* DuelBoss: [[spoiler:After fulfilling certain conditions in ''Hollow Fragment'', Kirito can challenge her to a non-fatal duel after beating Heathcliff. Despite the fact that she came from Alfheim Online, she [[InstantExpert instantly masters]] the mechanics of SAO to the point of giving Kirito a run for his money.]]
* GoodCounterpart: For Shouichi Shinkawa / Red-Eyed [=XaXa=] . Both are very ill in real life and wanted to prove their strength in the VR world, which gave them more opportunity than the real world. Unlike [=XaXa=], who completely gave up on the real world ethics and became a killing machine [[spoiler:and SerialKiller as "Death Gun"]], Yuuki chose to become one of the best players in Alfheim Online and lead a band of similarly [[spoiler:terminally-ill patients]] as well as being one of the genuinely nicest characters in the series.
* HairAntennae: She has a small one pointing near her headband. Ironically, she says she doesn't like bugs.
* IKnewThereWasSomethingAboutYou: [[spoiler:Even after trying to cut all contact with Asuna so she wouldn't find out the truth about her, she had a feeling Asuna would find her in the real world.]]
* ImageSong: She has a total of three: Liberty Rosario, Sora e to Ateta Tegami (a duet with Asuna), and Sleepless Legend (along with Asuna and the rest of the Sleeping Knights).
* IllGirl: [[spoiler:She was born with HIV, contracted from an infected blood infusion given to her and Aiko's mother while giving birth to them. By the time Asuna sees her physical body, it was already blind, bedridden and on the verge of death, with her consciousness hooked up onto the Medicuboid for three years.]]
* UsefulNotes/JapaneseChristian: She and her family are Christian. The name of her Original Sword Skill reflects her religious upbringing.
* LaserBlade: In ''Fatal Bullet'', she uses the same Photon Saber as Kirito does, though unlike him, she uses it as a singular weapon instead of wielding a pistol or similar one-handed firearm alongside it at the same time.
* LightningBruiser: Remember how most opponents can't even react to Kirito dashing towards them before it's too late? Let's just say that Kirito can't even react to ''her'' and leave it at that.
* MasterSwordsman: She is called "The Ultimate Sword" for a ''very'' good reason; as even Kirito, ''The'' WorldsBestWarrior of SAO, was outclassed by her in single-sword combat.
* MeaningfulName:
** Her guild -- "Sleeping Knights" may sound romantic, until one realizes that [[spoiler:all its members are terminally ill patients with their consciousnesses kept alive by the Medicuboid while their physical bodies are sleeping, and are soon to be, figuratively, asleep for good]].
** Her own name, Yuuki: is a pun on the Japanese word "Courage", quite symbolic of her resolve to optimistically live her life [[spoiler: with what little time she has left.]]
** The character choice in her name also [[http://www.taptaptaptaptap.net/sao-qna-sinon-leafa-yuuki/#yuu signifies that she was born when the crinum blooms, in July]]
* NiceGirl: A bright and kind-hearted lass who encourages everyone around her to happily live life to the fullest, without a single spiteful or selfish bone in her body.
* NotTooDeadToSaveTheDay: [[spoiler:Despite her death, Yuuki's spirit appears during the final battle of the ''Ordinal Scale'' movie to help Asuna and her friends.]]
* OhCrap: When she realizes that Merida is using Ran's [=NerveGear=] to try to get into Sword Art Online and help her guildmates, she panics.
* OneSteveLimit: Yuuki's first name is pronounced the same way as Asuna's surname, which causes confusion when Asuna's friends refer to her as "Yuuki-san". When Yuuki jokingly suggests marrying Asuna, she suggests that Asuna should marry into her family as otherwise her name would be "Yuuki Yuuki".
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She is shown to be shorter than Asuna by a good bit, but displays her prowess as the best player in ALO.
* PluckyGirl: Twenty players blocking the entrance to the boss room, with thirty more on the way? Bring it on, she says.
* ThePollyanna: Despite [[spoiler:her family being killed off one by one by AIDS until she was left to bear the pain and the stigma by herself]], she remains cheerful and as energetic as an IllGirl could possibly be.
* PostFinalBoss: In ''Hollow Fragment'', she appears only if Kirito [[spoiler:chooses to investigate the optional "strange area" after defeating Kayaba, likely due to the same glitching that brought Leafa and Sinon in. If so, she and Kirito fight a Half-Loss Duel, and defeating her will allow her to be recruited into the party on a NewGamePlus]]. However, as this event is directly referenced in ''Lost Song'' by both of them, the fight is canon in the videogame continuity.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She is the best player in ALO and a large portion of her attire is purple along with her hair.
* RedBaron: In ALO, she is known as Zekken, or 'Absolute Sword', [[EarnYourTitle due to her legendary skill as a swordswoman]].
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship:
** Shares one with Asuna. While milder than other examples, she lampshades this when she playfully proposes marriage to Asuna. ''Lost Song'' and ''Hollow Realization'' just adds on the subtext with Asuna getting ''depressed'' when she thinks she's becoming a burden on Yuuki's happiness [[spoiler:and capped off with Yuuki giving her a ''bouquet of flowers'' to show how grateful she is for her help]].
** In ''[[AlternateContinuity Hollow Realization]]'' she starts to build one with [[BirdsOfAFeather Strea]] due to their shared enthusiasm and go-lucky attitude, to the point it triggers Asuna to wonder if her own friendship is just burdening Yuuki.
* {{Samurai}}: In Sister's Prayer, she takes this as her PrestigeClass once she gains a few levels in "Asuka Online."
* SamusIsAGirl: In Season 2 Episode 18, as Liz and the others tell Asuna about Zekken, a mysterious warrior who always challenges people in a certain spot during a certain time of day. Asuna at first assumes that it's a guy, particularly as Kirito was also unable to beat him. Then in episode 19 she finds out that Zekken is actually a girl, and her image of a heavily armored man gets shattered. She also gets a little upset at Liz for [[YouDidntAsk not telling her Zekken was a girl]] and [[DeathGlare at Kirito]] as she [[WouldntHitAGirl suspects he lost on purpose because Zekken was a girl]], despite him trying to say otherwise. She quickly learns that he was being honest when Yuuki counters her Quadruple Pain, showing just how fast her reaction speed is compared to Kirito's.
* SayingTooMuch: In Sister's Prayer, she admits to Merida that she isn't using an Amusphere, almost spilling the beans on the Medicuboid test, which is meant to be confidential. Luckily for her, Ran lies to Merida and says that they're actually using modified [=NerveGears=] approved by their doctor.
** Downplayed, but [[spoiler:when Asuna tells her she called her "sis" twice, she breaks down crying because she and the Sleeping Knights don't want Asuna to get to close to them because they feel it will only hurt her if she learns about how they don't have much time left.]]
* SignatureMove: The titular Mother's Rosario, an 11-hit attack developed with pure skill in technique and crystallized into a Sword Skill. [[spoiler:She later passes it on to Asuna before dying.]]
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In the non-canon game ''Lost Song'', Yuuki's condition improves and she says that she'll be able to stay in the long run. Presumably, this is so that Yuuki (who [[PromotedToPlayable becomes playable in said game]]) won't have to be cut out altogether. This continues into its sequel ''Hollow Realization'', where Yuuki is ready to tackle a new adventure with her new friends and any worries about her condition are almost nonexistent.
* StepfordSmiler: She admits that she's not as cheerful or upbeat as she seems, and that it took her a long time to understand what her mother wanted to teach her by talking about Jesus, but believes that smiling and living life to the fullest are good things in and of themselves.
* SuperReflexes: Remember how we said that Kirito has the fastest reaction speed in SAO? Yuuki's reflexes surpasses even ''that''. Kirito even said that had she been in Aincrad, she would have been the one granted the Dual Blades skill instead.
* TalkingThroughTechnique: She believes in facing others head on, and the fact that actions speak louder than words. In Sister's Prayer, this is how she convinces Merida [[spoiler:not to try to re-enter SAO in an attempt to help her guildmates]].
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: A shining beacon of courage, joy and hope too bright to remain burning in this cruel and selfish world.
* VSign: Her signature VictoryPose, as seen [[http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20141115201217/swordartonline/images/thumb/d/d0/Yuuki_V.png/640px-Yuuki_V.png here]].
* WeaponTombstone: [[spoiler: Her sword, adorned with her bandana, marks the spot where she met Asuna for the first time as well as where she spent her final moments in the company of Asuna, her surviving guildmates, and Kirito and Asuna's raiding party.]]
* WorldsBestWarrior: Of Alfheim Online; even Kirito, the WorldsBestWarrior of SAO, respectfully acknowledges her as such.

The co-male protagonist of the Alicization arc. A boy from Rulid Village whose Sacred Task is to cut down the Gigas Cedar, the seventh generation woodcutter since his predecessors.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: He used to have a bowl hairdo in the web novels. When he first appeared in the light novels, he's a certified {{Bishonen}} and even more so in the games.
* AdaptationalBadass: Introduction-wise, Eugeo started out as a villager in the light novels who would later work his way to become a swordsman. The video game continuity version of Eugeo? He's already a swordsman, especially in ''Hollow Realization'', [[spoiler:where he becomes an Integrity Knight before the aformentioned game began]].
* AlternateTimeline: In ''Millenium Twilight'', [[spoiler:the Eugeo who appears there is all but stated to be from the canonical timeline and was brought into the video game continuity through the [[TimeyWimeyBall timeline shenanigans]] going on throughout the game, as he calls out to Kirito and remembers how they grew up together, and is saddened to realize this Kirito doesn't have those memories. He gets over it pretty quickly though as they fight, reminiscing happily that memories or no, it still is Kirito]].
* {{Bishonen}}: Just like Kirito.
* CharacterDevelopment: He starts developing the "ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight" mindset when Ronye and Tiese are about to be raped by two goons. He also gains the resolve to save Alice and oppose the Axiom Chruch as a result.
* ChildhoodFriends: To Alice and [[MindScrew maybe Kirito]].
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: Eugeo has a penchant for helping others, such as when he shared his food to Kirito and offering assistance to Tiese to lessen her Valet job. Unlike most examples, however, he's also conscious of his well-being at the same time.
* {{Determinator}}: Gives Kirito a run for his money in this department.
* FakeDefector: [[spoiler:Used his status as an Integrity Knight so he could get close to Quinella and assassinate her. This action bites him in the ass... ''fatally''.]]
* FatalFlaw: Aside from his ChronicHeroSyndrome, his recklessness can get him into trouble at times. [[spoiler:If he just listened to Kirito's warnings instead of focusing on killing Quinella, then his death didn't happen.]]
* FightingYourFriend: [[spoiler:Due to Quinella's forced synthesis, he ends up fighting Kirito.]]
* GrewASpine: Becomes more daring as the story goes on.
* GuardianEntity: [[spoiler:His "spirit" shows up during Kirito's fight against Gabriel, and later in the epilogue.]]
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: [[spoiler:After Quinella slices the Sword of Blue Rose in half when Eugeo was merged he was un-merged with his body in half.]]
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:He's visibly stunned after finding out that Bercouli killed the dragon who guarded the Blue Rose Sword.]]
* HeroicResolve: He'll save Alice no matter what it takes, even if it means breaking the rules to do it.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: [[TrueCompanions Nakama]], and general best friend to Kirito, which makes him a:
** LivingEmotionalCrutch: On the same level as '''''[[LoveInterest Asuna]]'''''. [[spoiler:Becomes literal when Kirito spends the rest of the arc wielding Eugeo's sword after his death.]]
* AnIcePerson: His Sword of Blue Rose creates thorny vines of ice out of the ground. In terms of appearance, Eugeo consistently wears blue and white clothing and armor.
* KilledOffForReal: [[spoiler:Ends up being cut in half during his failed attempt to kill Quinella.]]
* LastBreathBullet: [[spoiler:He manages to disarm Quinella by cutting off her right arm before dying.]]
* LovableCoward: Eugeo started out as this, often complaining, worrying about breaking the rules, and relying on Kirito for guidance. This changes when two goons are abusing their authority to sexually harass Ronye and Tiese.
* MyGreatestFailure: As a child, his cowardice resulted with Alice being taken to the Central Cathedral and turned into an Integrity Knight. He spent ''six years'' trying to cut down the Gigas Cedar as an excuse to forget about leaving his village... [[spoiler:until Kirito is dumped back into UW by Rath.]]
* NamedWeapon: Sword of Blue Rose.
* SempaiKohai: Has this relationship with Teise.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: If the rules are immoral by his standards, he would rather break them.
* StartXToStopX: [[spoiler:He brought up the idea of fusing himself with the Blue Rose Sword to fight Quinella's sword golems despite Kirito's pleas, only to get killed off in the end.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Went from a woodcutting villager to an [[spoiler:Integrity Knight]].
* TheTragicRose: A big part of Eugeo's motif, shows up literally in Cardinal's story of how the Blue Rose Sword was created.
* YouAreNotAlone: [[spoiler:His "spirit" gives one to snap Kirito out of his DespairEventHorizon.]]

A girl from Rulid Village who was friends with Kirito and Eugeo until she was taken away by an Integrity Knight for touching the gravel from the Land of Darkness. As Kirito and Eugeo later find out, she was synthesized into an Integrity Knight herself. [[spoiler:At the end of Alicization, she becomes a RobotGirl in the real world and a phenomenal icon in ALO.]]
----
* ActionGirl: To the point she could keep up with Kirito and Eugeo like nobody's business. [[spoiler:Even after getting a robot body in the real world, she can still beat Kirito in a sparring match with it.]]
* {{Adorkable}}: She's an Integrity Knight [[spoiler:and a RobotGirl]] with NoSocialSkills. Do the math.
* AliceAllusion: She's a ''literal'' Alice archetype, especially as a kid.
* BigEater: ''Hollow Realization'' shows Alice ordering ''over eight scoops of ice cream'', with each having a different flavor, in a single cone.
* CatGirl: [[spoiler:After making an account in ALO, Alice took the form of a Cait Sith as her avatar in Material Edition 22.]]
* ChildhoodFriends: To Eugeo and [[MindScrew maybe Kirito]].
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** [[spoiler: She and Asuna get into a fight when Asuna logs into Underworld to meet Kirito.]]
** [[spoiler:At the end of Alicization, she and Asuna are exchanging [[DeathGlare Death Glares]] at each other after the latter saw her seating behind Kirito's motorcycle and tightly hugging him.]]
* CoolBigSis: [[spoiler:To Silica, whom she helped in fending off some Player Killers during their recent adventures in ALO.]]
* DragonRider: [[spoiler:Alice has two pet dragons as her support units while fighting Gabriel at the World End Altar. This is mainly her reason of becoming a Cait Sith.]]
* EyeScream: [[spoiler:Her eye quite literally pops when she breaks the seal. Break what seal? Quinella placed a seal in the right eye on everyone who lived in the underworld to prevent them from breaking the laws she created.]]
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:She had a minor breakdown after Kirito told her about the Integrity Knights and mentioned her sister's name.]]
* HopeBringer: [[spoiler:Kirito sees her as "the hope that connects everyone's will to the future".]]
* HumbleHero: When Kirito and Asuna asked her and Eugeo to stay at their place in ''Memory Defrag'', she said that "hospitality isn't necessary" and she can "handle herself", only for Kirito to point out that she's not familiar with ALO culture.
* IdentityAmnesia: [[spoiler:Through her synthesis. She gets better, though.]]
* IRegretNothing: She never had any regrets in the path she took. Her father understood why.
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:Towards Gabriel for killing Bercouli.]]
* KnightInShiningArmor: The "shining amror" part is that Alice's standard attire has golden armor on it.
* LadyOfWar: She openly admits to Kirito that as an Integrity Knight, she lives to fight [[spoiler:and doesn't want to StayInTheKitchen (although Kirito has legitimate reasons for not wanting to let her fight, since Gabriel is ''after her'' at that time)]].
* MagicKnight: Skilled in both swordplay and magic.
* NamedWeapon: Fragrant Olive Sword.
* NoSocialSkills:
** In regards to outside UW culture, Alice is very blunt. [[spoiler:She even reveals Kirito's heroism in UW and boldly addresses his uncle as "father" prior. Suguha is shocked at the latter part.]]
** In ''Memory Defrag'', Alice had a problem interacting with other ALO players due to her Integrity Knight upbringing. Kirito has to get her out of this situation.
* OddFriendship: With Suguha, who is also an expert swordswoman like her.
* PetalPower: The Fragrant Olive Sword creates a cloud of golden, razor sharp petals that Alice can direct at will.
* PrettyFreeloaders: [[spoiler:She sneaks into Kirito's place by simply packing herself in a box to get out from Rath. It's only for a single night though, and Rinko seems cool with it after a talk with her on the phone.]]
* TheRival: [[spoiler:Sees Asuna and Sinon as these in regards to [[ChickMagnet Kirito]], especially with the former.]]
* RobotGirl: [[spoiler:After being sent to the real world by Asuna, she adopts a robot body that looks identical to her UW avatar.]]
* SweetTooth: If ordering over eight scoops of ice cream in ''Hollow Realization'' is anything to go by.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Turns out that Quinella manipulated Alice into doing her dirty work. The same goes for the Integrity Knights too.]]
* WeakButSkilled: [[spoiler: Her ALO account is out of Kirito's league, but like Sinon, she makes it up with her fighting skills. In Material Edition 22, she single-handedly fends off some Player Killers with Silica.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:Alice is not pleased at Kirito's decision to stay behind in UW for 200 years. Kirito feels guilty about it.]]

!Ryōtarō Tsuboi / Klein (SAO, ALO)
[[quoteright:287:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aincrad_klein.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:[[labelnote:Click here to see Klein's ALO avatar]] http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alo_klein.png[[/labelnote]]]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/HiroakiHirata (Japanese), Creator/KirkThornton (English), Gabriel Ortiz (Latin American Spanish), Rafael Ordóñez Arrieta (European Spanish)

Kirito's first friend and comrade in SAO. After Kayaba trapped them, he and Kirito parted ways to gather his real-world friends, in the process forming "Fuurinkazan", a guild famous for having ''all'' of its members survive SAO. Later in ALO, he joins Kirito's party as a Salamander-type swordsman.
----
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: The poor guy never manages to score the definite girl of his life. He's desperate enough to marry an ''[=NPC=]'' at least. [[UpToEleven Not even then he's successful.]]
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: As TheLeader of Fuurinkazan.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He develops a small one towards Kirito, showing it in ways such as asking Asuna to take care of him and telling him to stay alive in the game.
* BoisterousBruiser: Loves a good fight, and isn't afraid to yell his enthusiasm.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Is one of the nicest guys in the series, with a really soft heart, and has cried the most out of all the characters. He is also a badass swordsman with balls of steel, and an excellent leader.
* ButtMonkey: Gets ignored by the plot and gets little respect from his friends, who constantly pick on his failed love life and attempts to get a date despite being an accomplished clearer
* ChivalrousPervert: A very loyal friend and comrade, who also likes to ogle schoolgirls.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: At the start of the ''Caliber'' arc, he mentions that their party [[CripplingOverspecialization could really use some more spellcasters]], only to get reprimanded that he's not exactly [[Literature/HarryPotter swish-and-flick]]ing, himself. He tries to defend himself as being a samurai, which prompts Asuna to point out that classic RPG samurai are MagicKnight[=s=]. When he claims that he would rather give up his title as a samurai than use magic, Yui points out that ALO's [[SpellBlade element-enhanced Sword Skills]] are magic for magic-haters. Kirito has to dig him out with the counter of "You don't chant when you use a Sword Skill, so it doesn't count."
* DoggedNiceGuy: A non-romantic example to Kirito. He keeps trying to get Kirito to join Fuurinkazan and tries to pull him out of his loner shell, but isn't as successful as Asuna. When he realizes Asuna's feelings for Kirito, he asks her to take care of him.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Appears in the news report in the first minute of the first episode.
* FaceOfAThug: Is described as this by Kirito. The avatar he originally made for himself in Aincrad is said to be much more handesome.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Klein has had his own adventures in SAO, and the story of how Furinkazan went from being a noob guild to ''the'' ActionSurvivor guild is one worth telling one day.
* HotBlooded: High energy and passion goes with being a BoisterousBruiser.
* IWillWaitForYou: A non-romantic example. He always holds a open hand to Kirito to join him and even when he is at his emotional nadir, Klein still was friendly to him and wanted to help him, even when it seemed Kirito might be willing to fight him.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: In SAO, he gained the rare ability of equipping katanas. That's why he becomes a samurai in ALO. This is justified in ''Hollow Fragment'', where most Katana skills can inflict bleed.
* TheLancer: Plays this role during the ''Caliber'' arc, acting as a HotBlooded contrast to the level-headed Kirito.
* MartialArtsHeadband: His main shtick, even in real life, is wearing one of these.
* NiceGuy: Beneath his gruff, lecherous persona is a kind soul. In SAO, his first action post-entrapment was to find his friends and bring them under his wing.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: [[spoiler: In ''Caliber'', he insists on [[DulcineaEffect saving Freyja]] even though everyone else is sure it's SchmuckBait. This decision saves the team's ass, but not without some BrainBleach due to Freyja's true identity as Thor.]]
* RealNameAsAnAlias: His real name of Tsuboi. His character name is [[GeniusBonus Klein referencing]] a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klein_bottle Klein Bottle]]. In Japanese, this would be pronounced as Kurain no '''Tsuboi'''
* {{Samurai}}: Designs his SAO and ALO characters around this class even though SAO and ALO are classless, and attempts to roleplay as a samurai too.
* SpiderSense: Like Kirito, he possesses the hypothetical skill, Hypersense.
* SpiritedCompetitor: He won't go around picking fights, but he isn't afraid to show off his enthusiasm.
* TookALevelInBadass: Seriously. He starts off a complete and total noob who had trouble with the starter enemies, to one of the best players in SAO by the end, and he leads his own guild which had nobody die in it. Not even the Knights of the Blood can boast that!
* WeaponOfChoice: [[KatanasAreJustBetter Katanas]]. In SAO, he used the "Karakurenai".

An ax wielding merchant who runs a shop in SAO while his real-world wife runs Dicey Café, his real-life one. In ALO, he reprises his SAO job as a Gnome.
----
* AdamSmithHatesYourGuts: His store's MO is to buy cheap and sell expensively. Turns out he uses his profit to support lower-level players and a local church.
* AnAxToGrind: Carries a massive ax that he ''definitely'' knows how to use.
* AnEntrepreneurIsYou: In SAO, he runs a shop on the 50th floor. 2/5 of his 10 Skills is for appraisal and negotiations on pricing items.
* BaldOfAwesome: He's virtually hairless, and he's also one of the most powerful players in SAO, if he were to concentrate more on combat.
* TheBartender: His job in real life is running a bar. He also fits the adviser part of the role both in the game.
* GeniusBruiser: Big and intelligent in combat. Don't think this salesman is for nothing, he's a tough one.
* GoodGuyBar: He runs one in both the virtual and real worlds, and in both cases Kirito and his friends hang out there often.
* HappilyMarried: In the real world. When he was trapped in SAO, his wife singlehandedly kept his bar running and waited for him to come back, so they could pick up where they left off. He did, and they did.
* JerkassFacade: He gives off the image of being a greedy merchant, but in reality, he donates his profits to lower-level players. He's quite surprised when Kirito reveals he knew that.
* LetMeGetThisStraight: He more or less summarizes Kibaou's grievances with the beta testers as being over monopolizing resources in a manner similar to this trope, before following up with the fact that because of the beta testers, the rest of the players have access to the most important commodity of all- information.
-->"If I have this right, Kibaou, you're claiming that many newbies died because the former beta testers didn't help them, and therefore they should apologize and pay reparations? Is this correct?"
* NiceGuy: You can never tell from his shop's seemingly unfair trading policies, but Agil is a loving husband and player who spent most of his fortune helping newbies.
%%* OurGnomesAreWeirder: His race in ALO.
* RealNameAsAnAlias: '''A'''ndrew '''Gil'''bert Mills, or '''Agil'''
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Gives a minor one to Kibaou in Season 1 Episode 2 when he goes into a rant against Beta-testers, showing him that the free manual handed out to people was written by the same people Kibaou accused of being selfish cheaters.
* ScaryBlackMan: Subverted -- as intimidating as he looks, he is actually one of the kindest senior players in SAO.
* TokenMinority: He's the only one of Kirito's close SAO friends who isn't a native Japanese, he's also black.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kirito. They occasionally playfully bicker, but both have a higher opinion of the other than they let on.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[AnAxeToGrind Two-handed axes]]. In SAO, he used the "Ground Gorge".

A young dagger wielder who befriends Kirito. She was able to befriend an NPC dragon that became her familiar, earning her the title of "Beast Tamer." She later joins ALO as a Cait Sith beast tamer.
----
* ACupAngst: Shows hints of this in regards to Suguha's [[BoobsOfSteel bust]] in the Extra Edition episode.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the light novel, she is among the highest level players outside of the Aincrad frontline [[note]] Level 43, and after her introduction arc, 45[[/note]] and capable of going solo in a dungeon. The only reason she needed Kirito's help was because she got lost in the Forest of Wandering for hours ''after'' the completion of a raid, so she was tired and out of crystals. Her major appearance in the anime's first season, on the other hand, makes it look like her only ability is Pina and that she is helpless without the dragon.
* AGirlAndHerX: Befriends a Feathery Dragon she names Pina.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: Silica is doted on and protected by ''every'' member of the Heroes of Aincrad like a little sister, by Kirito, Asuna, and Lisbeth in particular, due to her meek and vulnerable personality. Even Yui, who is ostensibly her junior, is braver and more assertive than she is. Silica for her part often feels guilty about this; in particular during the "Ordinal Scale" Motion Picture, her cowardice during a key battle [[spoiler: cause Asuna, shielding her from the blow of a resurrected Aincrad boss, was robbed of her 2 years of Memories spent in Aincrad.]]
* BadassAdorable: Yes, she's cute as a button, but she's still a competent player for someone as young as her.
* TheBeastmaster: In Both SAO and ALO she works with dragons. Her skills are good enough that she can even befriend non-hostile animal mobs like deer.
* ButtMonkey: In her first appearance alone she got her pet killed, nearly answered the door to Kirito in her underwear, and got caught by tentacle monsters far below her level twice. In the Gameverse, each game she ends up getting assaulted by tentacle monsters or being reminded of [[ACupAngst lack of assets]] and in having animal mobs attack her and nearly damage her clothes. Her first scene in Millenium Twilight had her running away from mobs by hiding in a barrel...and then getting stuck and needing help to get out.
* CatGirl: A Cait-Sith beast tamer in ALO.
* CuteButCacophonic: Silica ''loves'' to sing the songs of the virtual idol Yuna in the ''Ordinal Scale'' film; not that she's very competent at it, but hey points for effort.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Her Avatar's default outfit has this. On more than one occasion (usually involving tentacle monsters), she has to desperately hold on to prevent a PantyShot.
* DudeMagnet: She gets a lot of party member invites from guys in Aincrad. The narration explicitly calls them "suitors."
* EarlyBirdCameo: Silica had a very brief cameo during episode 1 with the crowd of players listening to Kayaba's announcement.
* FamedInStory: She's a celebrity in Aincrad for three reasons: 1) [[ThereAreNoGirlsOnTheInternet She's a real girl.]] 2) She's an upper middle level player. 3) She owns a Feather Dragon, an exceedingly rare creature.
* GirlishPigtails: Signifying her youth and immaturity.
* GrowBeyondTheirProgramming: Familiar algorithms do not provide the option for familiars to physically defend their masters. Pina took a hit for Silica because she ''wanted'' to.
* HairDecorations: Ribbon and something else to hold up her pigtails.
* HeadPet: Her pet dragon Pina tends to rest on her head.
* HeroicBSOD: She clearly has one after Pina pulls a HeroicSacrifice.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: She is certainly an "enthusiastic" fan of the virtual idol Yuna in the ''Ordinal Scale'' motion picture, but can't hold a note to save her life, as shown in her adorably-hilarious attempts to imitate Yuna's singing when put on the spot by Liz to do so.
* HopelessSuitor: For Kirito. The first time she met him, he was still too shaken over Sachi's death to think about romance. By the time they meet up again, he's in a relationship with Asuna.
* ImageSong: She has a total of four. ☆Lovely Super Idol☆, Party-go-round (Silica & Lizbeth), , Sing All Overtures (which is sung by Kirito, Asuna, Yui, Leafa, Lizbeth and herself), Memorial Calibur (which is sung by Leafa, Yui, Lizbeth and herself).
* KnifeNut: Uses a dagger as her main weapon.
* LittleSisterHeroine: Kirito and Silica are not blood related, but Kirito sees Silica like this because she reminds him of Suguha.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Pina has useful abilities like detecting monsters or restoring HP, but her greatest value to Silica is as a friend.
* TheLoad: Her main role in the Ordinal Scale film consisted of running away from a boss and getting knocked on her back by Eiji which forced Asuna to [[TakeTheBullet take the blow for her]] and [[spoiler: nearly lose her memories of Aincrad to show off the villain's plans]].
* LuminescentBlush: Fairly often around Kirito due to her PrecociousCrush.
* MeaningfulName: Her avatar name comes from the fourteenth element Silicon. The bauble-like hair bands represent Oxygen (as in silicon dioxide a.k.a. silica). Why? Her birthdate is October 4th (10/4; since 104 was Rutherfordium, her father added 10 and 4 to get 14: Silicon), and her real name comes from ''keiso'', the Japanese for Silicon. Kirito figured all that out from the simple hint that "My name comes after Alumi, and before Rin." Silica was shocked.
* NiceGirl: A kind young lass, whom in spite of her (comparative) weakness and cowardice next to the other heroes of Aincrad, always steps up to take responsibility and stands by her friends when the chips are down.
* PrecociousCrush: On Kirito, who's two years her senior. [[spoiler:Taken UpToEleven at the end of the Alicization arc when she took advantage of Kirito's gratitude by hugging him, only to end up getting her tail grabbed by Lisbeth for it.]]
* PluckyGirl: After Pina's temporary death, Silica was distraught but never gave up hope that she could save her dragon.
* RedBaron: In SAO, she is known as "Dragon Master."
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Averted. Her online avatar sports red eyes, but she is a kind soul.
* RescueRomance: Kirito saves her after Pina performs a HeroicSacrifice, helps her get the resurrection item, and protects her from Titan's Hand. This prompts her attraction to him.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: She ditches Titan's Hand when she's first introduced.
* SupportingProtagonist: Her introduction arc in Aincrad volume 2 is written from her prespective but Kirito takes the lead narrative-wise.
* ShoulderSizedDragon: Pina perches on her shoulder.
* ShrinkingViolet: She's easily embarrassed and flustered, especially in a romantic situation.
* TokenMiniMoe: She's one of the youngest characters in both SAO and ALO, as well as the youngest in Kirito's Caliber party at the tender age of thirteen.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[KnifeNut Daggers.]] In SAO, is seen using a "Shadow Dagger" before replacing it with an "Ebon Dagger" received from Kirito.
* YoungEntrepreneur: In ''Hollow Realization'', she eventually follows in Lisbeth's footsteps and opens a meat bun shop, building it from the ground up with input from Lisbeth and Kirito.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Wears thigh-high boots in SAO with a longcoat.

A blacksmith and friend of Asuna. She helped forge both her and Kirito's weapons, while in battle she's a mace wielder. In ALO she joins as a Leprechaun.
----
* TheBlacksmith: She personally made Asuna's rapier "Lambent Light" and Kirito's secondary straight sword "Dark Repulser." This continues in ALO, this time with Kirito's sword there as well as virtually everyone elses weapons that aren't better quest rewards, including some of Sinon's bows. She also handles repairing everyone's gear there as well.
* BigSisterMentor: She serves as this to Silica, often helping her out with problems. In ''Hollow Realization'', she even gives her input for starting her own business.
* BrainyBrunette: Her hair is naturally brown, and she's very smart.
* CannotSpitItOut: Never manages to directly tell Kirito about her feelings. Kirito catches on the gist of it from her embarrassed stuttering and turns extremely embarrassed himself upon realizing it.
* CarryABigStick: She wields maces when she fights.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** Despite supporting their relationship, she gets angry when she sees Kirito and Asuna getting lovey-dovey.
** [[spoiler:Post-Alicization, she grabs Silica's tail out of jealousy when the latter is making an excuse to hug Kirito.]]
* CoolBigSis: Develops into one towards Silica after they meet up. They're often seen together both in and out of virtual reality, with Silica often confiding to her.
* CovertPervert: ''Hollow Fragments'' seems to depict her as one. In one scene where they bathe in some hot springs, she makes it clear that Kirito isn't to peak on her but gets the temptation on peaking on him ''herself''. She then accidentally invites Kirito to visit a real life hot spring with her, making it sound like she's asking Kirito out on a date, but luckily Kirito [[ObliviousToLove doesn't pick up on this]] and suggests all of their friends go together.
* EarlyBirdCameo: She's easy to miss, but she appears in the first episode as part of the large group of people listening to Kayaba's announcement. She also had her real life hair color before it was customized pink in-game.
* DeadpanSnarker: She was the major source of snark before Shino showed up, often showing exasperation with Kirito's antics and mercilessly ripping into Kirito and Asuna's more [[SickeningSweethearts affectionate moments]].
* DropTheHammer: Happens on a daily basis, as she's constantly beating metal into weapons and armor. She also occasionally wields one in combat, and currently possesses [[Myth/NorseMythology Thor's]] hammer, [[ShockAndAwe Mjölnir]], one of the legendary weapons in ALO.
* GlassCannon: Originally, her weapons focused on sharpness and quickness, while largely ignoring durability. After Kirito effortlessly destroyed her best sword, she realised that in a desperate situation, what could ultimately save the lives of her clients is the weapon's durability.
* HairDecorations: Both in-game and out, she sports hair clips that divide her bangs.
* ImageSong: She has a total of four. Cheer! Tear? Cheer!!, Party-go-round (Silica & Lizbeth), Sing All Overtures (which is sung by Kirito, Asuna, Yui, Leafa, Silica and herself), Memorial Calibur (which is sung by Leafa, Yui, Silica and herself).
* {{Leprechaun}}: Her character race in ALO. It just so happens that Leprechauns are skilled at tinkering and smithing, receiving bonus skills in them as a race of ALO (they even get mechanical wings, rather than the normal fairy wings).
* MaleGaze: On Asuna's advice she started wearing a cuter outfit as part of her blacksmith attire, which actually resembles a waitress outfit. Her shop immediately became more popular.
* NamedWeapon: In ALO, Klein gave her the legendary hammer, Mjölnir, on the condition that she will not break it down into Orihalcon ingots.
* PluckyGirl: Despite losing Kirito to Asuna, Rika still cheers for the two of them.
* PrettyInMink: Has a fancy fur lined cape she wears for cold weather.
* TheProtagonist: Her introduction arc in Aincrad volume 2 is from her prespective and she is a first person narrator.
* RoseHairedSweetie: Her avatars in SAO and ALO have pink hair, fitting her cheerful personality.
* SecretKeeper: In SAO, she was the only person to whom Kirito had revealed his DualWielding Unique Skill.
* ShipperOnDeck: When she's not being envious, she openly supports Asuna and Kirito in their relationship.
* SkinshipGrope: Seems to [[LesYay really enjoy]] doing this to Suguha/Leafa, for a [[BuxomIsBetter couple of obvious reasons]]. Does it at least twice, once in real life during the recap special at the [[PoolScene pool]] with Suguha in her SchoolSwimsuit, and once in ALO in the Girls Ops manga, at the [[BeachEpisode beach]]. With a WardrobeMalfunction.
* SwitchingPOV: Is the narrator of her story in Volume 2, and a short scene in Volume 4.
* {{Tsundere}}: To the point where she attempts to punch Kirito for calling her a "rip-off blacksmith".
* UltimateBlacksmith: She's maxed out her blacksmithing skills, allowing her to craft any weapon including legendary ones.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[CarryABigStick One-handed maces]] with a buckler.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Dyes her hair pink in SAO after she starts blacksmithing (a group photo on her wall reveals her with naturally brown hair).
* YoungEntrepreneur: In SAO, she built her blacksmithing business from the ground up.
* YouthfulFreckles: One of the few characters to have them, alluding to her can-do personality.
* ZettaiRyouiki: Wears this in her school uniform IRL.

[[folder:Yui]]
[[quoteright:243:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yui_0.png]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KanaeIto (Japanese), Creator/StephanieSheh (English), Susana Moreno (Latin American Spanish), Nina Romero (European Spanish)

An AI in SAO created to take care of the mental health of the players but was suspended by the Cardinal system when the death game began. Unfortunately her monitoring operations continued and sensed the negative emotions such as fear, despair, rage, and madness from the players. Unable to perform her duty due to her restriction, she broke down due to errors. When she sensed Asuna and Kirito's more positive emotions, she was overcome with the urge to see them, which then kicked off the events of Morning Dew Girl and later made her their adoptive daughter.
----
* AmnesiacsAreInnocent: The girl who has no memory also doesn't have a care in the world.
* ArtificialIntelligence: A Top-Down AI.
* BackFromTheDead: Kirito manages to save her information before she's deleted from the system, and successfully brings her back in ALO.
* BadassAdorable: Cute and sweet, not to mention she actually cares about the players in the game worlds she's assigned (it's her job to begin with). But try to threaten those she care about (i.e. her adopted mom and dad), she will conjure up a sword made of fire (or any weapon of mass destruction) and utterly erase you from existence, even if you are a nigh-invulnerable boss monster. In short, do not taunt the happy fun admin.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Claims only she and Asuna can hug "Papa" when Kirito first meets Leafa after the latter thanks him for rescuing her. She in general reacts poorly to other girls getting too clingy with him, but it's clear she only wants to make sure he stays faithful to Asuna.
* DaddysGirl: To her Daddy Kirito, particularly in the ALO arc, because she has more screentime than in Aincrad and so more time to be affecionate.
* {{DePower}}: In SAO she was a system admin, but in ALO, she's no longer connected to the Cardinal system and so she no longer automatically has admin abilities. [[spoiler: She DOES however have the admin passwords.]]
* DoesNotLikeShoes: Goes barefoot both in human and pixie forms, seemingly as part of her standard equipment in the first and as a trait of her Navigation Pixie official attire in the second. It also might be out of personal preference, given her innocent child status.
* TheEmpath: Due to being programmed as a therapist, she is extremely compassionate and in-tune with the emotions of those around her. Near the end of her introductory arc, she is able to casually push a girl she just met towards confessing her feelings towards her guild leader.
* ExpositionFairy: In ALO, she provides Kirito with intel.
* FairyCompanion: In ALO, she becomes a "Navigation Pixie."
* FlamingSword: A giant one that she conjures up to save Kirito and Asuna from a Level 90 Boss Monster.
* FlowerInHerHair: As a Navigation Pixie in ALO, she wears a blue flower in her hair.
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: Technically, since she's an AI, her true form is not the cute kid that looks like a hypothetical child of Asuna and Kirito. Admittedly, It might as well be nowadays.
* FunSize: Upon entering ALO, she adopts this size (and poses as a Navi Fairy) for ease of travel (in Kirito's shirt pocket) and the better to not rouse the suspicion of the reigning computer system.
* AGlitchInTheMatrix: She causes one of these in SAO. When she screams, the area bugs out briefly.
* HappilyAdopted: When Kirito and Asuna found her wandering around a forest, they initially planned to find her parents. In the end, they ''became'' her parents, to the delight of everyone involved.
* TheHeart: She was originally designed to maintain the mental health of the players by giving them emotional support. Unfortunately, when the death game began, she was suspended by the Cardinal system and was forced to watch the players commit suicide and kill each other out of fear, anger, and despair. Then, she came across Kirito and Asuna.
* ImageSong: She has a total of four. I Know "Ai", Heart Sweet Heart, Sing All Overtures (which is sung by Kirito, Asuna, Silica, Leafa, Lizbeth and herself), Memorial Calibur (which is sung by Leafa, Silica, Lizbeth and herself).
* InfinityPlusOneSword: What she conjures up to annihilate in ''one'' hit the most powerful boss in the game.
* TheInformant: Her main role post-Aincrad is to use her nature as an AI to give intel into the system for Kirito and the other players, providing valuable information on monsters and [=NPCs=].
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She has shades of this in ''Hollow Fragment''. While she typically dresses appropriately, she doesn't have an understanding of covering up while bathing. She jumps up excitedly while in the hot spring, with her ModestyTowel at risk of falling off, to the concern of Asuna. She's just a little kid, after all (or a program with the mentality of one).
* KillerRabbit: In SAO she looks like an ordinary, cute child and then she one-shotted a Floor-90 boss. Just to be clear, the population didn't get above Floor 75.
* LivingLieDetector: She can easily tell when someone is lying, probably in order to help her do her job better.
* MySensorsIndicateYouWantToTapThat: She knows about Recon's crush on Leafa, again because of her ability to sense emotions.
* MysticalWaif: At first appearing to be a helpless young girl wandering in the woods, Kirito and Asuna quickly discover she has hidden powers, as the game marks her as "immortal" and she is able to kill a dungeon boss that had downed both of them.
* NiceGirl: She is literally made to be an emotionally healing outlet of grief, sadness and anger; but like daughter like mom all the same.
* OurPhlebotinumChild: The love between Kirito and Asuna bought her into existing in the main game world.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: She wouldn't be a very effective therapy bot if she was obviously inhuman.
* SheIsAllGrownUp: In ''Accel World vs Sword Art Online''. [[spoiler: Unfortunately, in that world at least, she's far from the kind girl that she was in her 'childhood', and only superficially resembles either of her parents.]]
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Although it's not brought up, she looks weirdly like a child Asuna with Kirito's hair color. She even has a similar hair style to Asuna, making her being their "daughter" ironic. This may mean she purposefully or subconsciously sculpted her avatar to look like that when she broke out of Cardinal to find them.
* TagAlongKid: Joins Kirito and Asuna in their adventures, even though physically appearing as a young girl.
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Invoked. Yui was designed to be a sort of therapist for players in [=SAO=], but the system prevented her from doing her job. Needless to say, this caused a lot of problems for both her and the players she was unable to help.
* TokenSuper: If Kirito isn't deemed ''super'' enough, than Yui certainly is. She's a BenevolentAI with [[StoryBreakerPower administrator powers]] so she could [[OneHitKill instant kill]] any [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu unbeatable boss]] in the game, along with being an [[NighInvulnerability Immortal Object]] that couldn't be destroyed conventionally. In fact, in the Aincrad arc she became a case of TooPowerfulToLive and was [[AlmostDeadGuy almost deleted]]. She was only able to return after a {{depower}}ing, but even so she was able to use her AI nature to see the code that underpinned monsters and {{NPC}}s enabling her to provide valuable information.
* WomanInWhite: In line with her purity and innocence, Yui's outfits are predominantly white. Bonus points for going barefoot.
