* VirginityMakesYouStupid: Ruby is totally inexperienced, but she's a university graduate who is perfectly aware that sex exists, having a sister who she knows is an ex-porn star. Nonetheless, she finds anything to do with sexual relationships confusing, she [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/makes_me_look_professional believed one of her teachers]] who told her that a [[DangerouslyShortSkirt ridiculously short skirt]] made her look "professional and distinguished," she is totally nonplussed and shocked the first time she sees two gay men kissing (strip #36, May 13, 2013, marginally NSFW), and she [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/now_pucker_up has trouble understanding the difference between mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and a kiss.]] Even [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/it_is_complex her speech patterns shift]] from [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/pretty_for_your_date "educated sarcastic"]] to [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/knock_yourself_out "naive pre-teen"]] when she has to deal with matters of love or sex. Quite how she got through university with such a limited world-view is unclear; blame [[FreudianExcuse early trauma]] for granting her impenetrable ignorance, and also the fact that her role in the comedy is to be shocked by everyone else. However, sharing an apartment with Dillon seems to be giving her a crash course in human relationships; to judge by [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/that_is_improper her facial expressions,]] she's coming to understand ''him'' all too well.

* AllWomenAreLustful: Amber sometimes seems to be leading things towards this trope. She apparently went into the porn business for the sex, and, despite being quite a nice person a lot of the time, she couldn't resist tricking Gary into giving her (admittedly uniquely high-quality) oral sex.

* DramaQueen: Dillon sometimes takes his CampGay mannerisms to the limit (and beyond).Dillon's {{camp|Gay}}ness often tips over into sheer excess, perhaps manipulatively, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/best_ease_back_there as here.]]

Added DiffLines:

* GoodBadGirl: This trope is generally averted, in that the comic doesn't seem inclined to judge Amber or Chanelle for liking sex and even for making a living from it. However, Amber is in the process of settling down more, and has declared that she could be happy with one good man. Moreover, Ruby ''does'' seem inclined to judge Amber for her past behaviour; from her point of view, classing Amber as a good bad girl would be an act of forgiveness.

Added DiffLines:

* DramaQueen: Although she tries to be serious, Ruby is so tightly wound that she reacts to minor provocations by yelling. (Admittedly she regards Dillon and Amber as inflicting a lot of ''serious'' provocations on her.) Hence, she often increases the drama level, albeit unintentionally.
* EatingTheEyeCandy: When Ruby has her libido kick-started by the persistent proximity of assorted attractive men, she finds herself being repeatedly {{distracted by the|Sexy}}m -- especially as various [[YaoiFangirl gay guys keep making out in front of her]]. At first, she's outraged and tells herself they should be stopped, but it soon becomes clear, even to her, that she just can't keep herself from looking.

* FriendlessBackground: Ruby, as it appears. Her spiky attitude and suspicion of men would certainly explain this. The only social relationships she's mentioned have been with family (and she's comically bad at "bonding with her sister"), and a favorite teacher (who. it's rapidly pointed out in the comic, seems to have been abusing her trust). She also seems genuinely surprised when [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/help_you_buy_a_new_one Dillon offers to do her a favor.]] In fact, her lack of social connections sometimes threatens to tip her toward the LonersAreFreaks trope.
* HairTriggerTemper: In less subtle strips, Ruby can fly off the handle at minor provocations such as [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/pet_the_kitty being called "uptight".]] However, all of her biggest flare-ups seem to be directed at Amber; she mostly reins in her anger even when sorely provoked by Dillon. Amber may think that Ruby is generally short-tempered, but the evidence suggests that Ruby is just angry at Amber -- or at least, that she only allows herself to be on such a hair trigger with her sister.

* {{Hypocrite}}: In 'Webcomic/MenageA3'', he calls Gary out on nearly cheating on Yuki and goes on a lengthy lecture about being faithful and how a person that is cheated on feels... But when he started teaching Gary the Swirly-Go-Round kissing technique, he said that he had seduced 27 men away from their girlfriends with it. Though to be fair, "I made them forget their girlfriends" may be a gay figure of speech, meaning "I made them forget that they used to be interested in girls" rather than "I made them desert their girlfriends at that time".\\

Then, in ''Webcomic/StickyDillyBuns'', he became insecure and jealous when he started dating Jerzy -- and yet he himself continued flirting with every attractive man in sight. This gave Angel an excellent excuse to bad-mouth him to Jerzy, and caused Ruby, the most romantically inexperienced and naive character in the setting, to offer him some good (if blindingly obvious) romantic advice.

* CampGay: '''If''' This is somewhat questionable with the (extremely) {{glam rock}}er Angel, for reasons discussed above and below But if Angel is ''is'' a gay man, male, he dresses to this trope much more than the CampGay part, unlike the sartorially quite restrained Dillon.

Dillon.

* EvilFormerFriend: Zii sees Angel this way (they used to work together), although Angel probably isn't really evil -- just someone with an understandable if strongly-held grudge. (Zii did have sex with Jerzy, who was Angel's boyfriend of the time -- though Zii claims that she didn't know this.) Angel sees Zii the same way, and shows much more contempt about it.

* GlamRock: The primary stylistic reference for Angel's band, "Pretty Boyz with Electric Toyz".

* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Angel definitely has long hair, and again, if Angel is a boy, he's quite pretty. But, again, see above.

to:

* TheDitz: Andy is completely incapable of picking up social cues or noticing when he's being exploited, and takes the dumbest advice from whoever offers it, to the point of treating Dillon as an oracular source of heterosexual dating advice. If it wasn't for his apparent competence in his job as a lifeguard, and his previous lack of a romantic life, his looks would make him a BrainlessBeauty.
* {{Expy}}: Andy, the gawky, socially clumsy, bow-tie-wearing swimming instructor, appears to be at least a visual expy for [[Franchise/ArchieComics Archie Andrews]]. (Archie comics are a known influence on the art style here.) He even ends up [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/we_will_sit_here trapped between a blond and a brunette]] in one sequence of strips, in classic Archie style.
* NiceGuy: Andy seems to be persistently nice in a slightly dim-witted way.

* AttractiveBentGender: Dillon makes a disturbingly plausible tall, leggy blonde woman. This became something of a standing joke in his time in ''Webcomic/MenageA3'', and is [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/on_a_bed_of_roses lampshaded by Matt]] in this comic.
* CampGay: Dillon just lives the trope.

Matt]]. See also Dillon as Gary's favorite porn star, [[http://www.menagea3.net/d/20090616.html Amber-Amber.]]
* CampGay: If you took every CampGay stereotype in the book and ''then'' some, squeezed them into a pink leotard and sprinkled them with glitter, Dillon just lives would be the trope.result. His orientation on the cast's page reads : "Gay. ''So'' gay."
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: He has his moments.

* DramaQueen: Dillon sometimes takes his CampGay mannerisms to the limit (and beyond).'
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: See Dillon dressed up as ComicBook/BlackCanary or Amber-Amber. And he's claimed to have "turned" several straight guys in the past with his Swirly-Go-Round kissing technique. Cosplaying as Gary's favorite porn star even got Gary to make out with him under the pretense of helping him learn how to do it right, but to no apparent lasting effect.
* {{Flanderization}}: Comparing early strips in ''Webcomic/MenageA3'' to his later appearances leads some readers to detect this. An ArchiveBinge may leave one thinking "Where did Dillon go, and why is Jack from ''WillAndGrace'' being called by his name?" He's arguably much more of a collection of stereotypes now than then -- though other readers would say that there were hints from early on. This is perhaps {{Lampshaded}} in ''Webcomic/StickyDillyBuns'' where he says he went "''from gay, to [[UpToEleven super ultra mega gay]].''"

* {{Hypocrite}}: He calls Gary out on nearly cheating on Yuki and goes on a length lecture about love and being faithful and how the person that is cheated on feels... But when he started teaching Gary the Swirly-Go-Round, he said that he had seduced 27 men away from their girlfriends with it. Though to be fair, "I made them forget their girlfriends" may be a gay figure of speech, meaning "I made them forget that they used to be interested in girls" rather than "I made them desert their girlfriends at that time". Not that moral consistency is the norm in this comic.

to:

* TheMistress: Dillon plays a gender-reversed version of this role to Nathan for a while.
* ThePornomancer: Has the same knack for seducing straight men that Zii has for seducing straight women. He claims that his tally so far is at least 27.
* StupidSexyFlanders: In-story and to [[{{Fandom}} fans]]. Him as ComicBook/BlackCanary was a low blow.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Funnily enough, ''some'' of Dillon's cross-dressing fits within this trope; much of it is for purely theatrical purposes. However, he's also perfectly willing to use drag to persuade Gary to accept his kissing lessons, or to give bisexual boyfriends extra thrills.

!!Amber Larose (formerly Amber-Amber)
([[BleachedUnderpants Formerly]] [[PornNames Amber-Amber]])

* AllWomenAreLustful: Amber sometimes seems to be leading things towards this trope. She apparently went into the porn business for the sex, and, despite being quite a nice person a lot of the time, she couldn't resist tricking Gary into giving her (admittedly uniquely high-quality) oral sex.

* BleachedUnderpants: [[JustifiedTrope Justified in-universe.]] She is trying to become a real actress (a la Traci Lords), though she and Dillon had the misfortune of working under JerkAss producer Nathan ([[CastingCouch all too literally]], as it turned out). Fortunately, (with a little help from [[AttractiveBentGender Dillon]]), [[KarmicTrickster she was able to turn the tables]] and nab both a favorable contract and a free apartment out of the deal.

to:

* EveryoneHasStandards: Her strongest standards are perhaps linked to a ''positive'' attitude to sex; in her eyes, getting it by trickery or using it for financial profit may be ethically questionable, but are the sort of thing that a girl may have to do, but cruelly refusing it to a boyfriend, leaving him frustrated, is just plain ''wrong''.
* {{Expy}}: Of Traci Lords, in both looks and her desired career path.
* HookerWithAHeartOfGold: Amber can be genuinely sweet, though she's sometimes selfish or self-indulgent, and really does want to help Gary when she thinks he needs assistance.
* ICallHimMisterHappy: In her quest to get [[CampGay Dillon]] to use his Swirly-Go-Round technique on her again, Amber reveals that she's indeed named her vagina "Rosebud" (and terrifies poor Dillon in the process).
* TheImmodestOrgasm: After tricking Gary into an ... intimate [[PracticeKiss practice kiss,]] her [[{{Pun}} rather epic climax]] alerts Gary's FridgeLogic detector.(''"Wait. How are you talking?"'') The result? [[http://www.menagea3.net/strips-ma3/can_i_have_your She breaks him.]]
* TheMistress: To Nathan, until she gets what she wants from him, in writing.
* MyGodYouAreSerious: Gary comes to her doorstep, telling her he's seen all her videos and apologising for having seen her as a lust object. She doesn't believe he's seen them ''all'' -- until he brings out a massive box of porn, his entire Amber-Amber collection.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Demonstrated twice. Once when Zii tells her of Gary's rather messy relationship with Yuki, which she interprets as abusive, leading her to declare war on the spot on "Yuki"[[MistakenIdentity (actually [=DiDi=])]]. The second time occurs when she hears that [[spoiler: Yuki keeps using Gary for oral sex and never reciprocates with any sort of physical affection]].

[[foldercontrol]]

!!Dilly Himself (The Title Character)

[[folder:Dillon]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Dillon O'Brien

The comic's primary character, a flamboyant gay actor with a passionate romantic streak and some problems with self-control.
----

* AllGaysArePromiscuous: Played with in the person of Dillon (not so much with the other gay characters). He used to claim a rather promiscuous past in ''Webcomic/MenageA3'', but he now mostly ''seems'' to be looking for a reliable monogamous partner, and talks about how badly a past boyfriend's cheating hurt him. On the other hand, he's a compulsive flirt, which at the very least often makes him ''look'' like a representative of this trope, and sometimes makes him seem like a flat-out {{hypocrite}} for those complaints.
* DragQueen: Dillon may tend this way for professional purposes. Back in ''Webcomic/MenageA3'', his stage career received a boost when he was a hit in the (female) role of ComicBook/BlackCanary, and in this comic he claims to have been successful in more such roles, and goes shopping for a skirt to wear in another. He does look good as a woman, but why so many cross-dressing parts come his way is unclear.
* GayBestFriend: Played with, in that Dillon seems to want to be every woman's gay best friend. He has more actual (gay) sex than the archetypal gay best friend, but otherwise fits the trope fairly well in relation to Amber. He's equally determined to play the part for Ruby, whether she wants him to or not; her attempts to keep him at a distance bring out her snarky side, which occasionally leads to her calling out his faults.
* {{Jerkass}}: It may not be conscious on his part or that of the writers, but Dillon ends up in this category for some readers when his cute ditziness slips too far into self-indulgent stupidity. For example, Ruby almost drowned because he couldn't stop flirting, even though he already has a boyfriend -- and while she was being revived, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_got_distracted he was taking pictures.]]
* LargeHam: Although Dillon appears to be a competent professional actor in the comics universe, his {{camp|Gay}} mannerisms and flamboyant emoting could be considered hammy.
* LovableSexManiac: Appears to be the intention with Dillon, who, when he isn't actively pursuing Jerzy or yearning for the unattainable Gary, is using Ruby as a straight guy detector, trying to impress Richie the handsome pet store owner, rubbing up against Andy the (non-gay) swimming instructor, and generally flirting with every attractive male in sight, while being blond, cute, and ditzy. How lovable he ''actually'' is, is [[YMMV/StickyDillyBuns a matter of personal opinion]].

[[/folder]]

!!Other Major Characters

[[folder:Amber]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Amber Larose (formerly Amber-Amber)

Dillon's room-mate, a former porn star seeking to make it as a serious actress. Back in their ''Webcomics/MenageA3'' days, she was the prime mover in arranging the slightly dubious transaction which got her and Dillon the apartment, which is in their joint names. They love each other like brother and sister, and often work together. Amber's view of the world seems to have been somewhat distorted by years working in the porn business; she's nice enough, but she has doesn't always understand other people with less uninhibited attitudes -- notably her own sister.
----
* TheAtoner: Ruby may be forcing Amber into this role, in a small, domestic way. Just by putting up with Ruby, Amber is atoning for the damage she unintentionally did to Ruby's psyche.
* DarkSecret: Amber has kept her porn career secret from her parents (and Ruby has colluded in this [[spoiler:despite feeling incredibly bitter about the fact]]). However, this seems unlikely to last if Amber's acting career takes off...
* ADateWithRosiePalms: When first seen, Amber is looking to get back to dating. It later becomes clear how she's been making do, when Ruby first accidentally discovers her "Battery Operated Boyfriend" under a sofa cushion, and then another sex toy amid the sheets on her bed. (It appears that Amber is a bit untidy.)

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Angel]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Angel

Jerzy's old friend and (briefly) lover, who is determined to get Jerzy back, by any means necessary. Angel is also a professional musician and something of a mystery in certain respects.
----
* AmbiguousGender: Appears to be the situation with Angel, at least initially. Angel is gay character Jerzy's ex, and plays in a band called "Pretty Boyz with Electric Toyz". Most readers and most characters within the comic meeting him for the first time assume that Angel is a gay man with an androgynous style. [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/missed_opportunity But then, panel 4 here happens]] -- and readers remember that Jerzy has acknowledged a bisexual past...
* {{Emo}}: Although Angel's primary stylistic reference is GlamRock, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/write_a_song that doesn't preclude some "emo" moments,]] or [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/one_person_cares moody sulking]] when sufficiently provoked.
* GenderReveal: Apparently happens [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/missed_opportunity here,]] albeit with some latent ambiguity. See the discussion of AmbiguousGender above.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Probably the case with Angel -- see the entry for AmbiguousGender above.
* OstentatiousSecret: The question of Angel's actual gender has fallen into this category at a meta-level; see the notes on AmbiguousGender. The writers are very careful to not use pronouns, substantives, or adjectives that would give away the secret. Hints are dropped here and there, but they're never conclusive...

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jerzy]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Jerzy

An occupant of the apartment next to Dillon's. Being both hunky and gay, he is naturally of great interest to Dillon. Unfortunately, he comes with some baggage attached.
----
* BearHug: Jerzy's [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/most_important_person "Jerzy Hug"]] is very much in character for [[ManlyGay him]].
* ManlyGay: Jerzy -- [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_just_want_to_kiss_you and he knows it.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Jerzy [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_just_want_to_kiss_you finds himself in this position,]] explaining to Andy that asking gay men for dating advice regarding Ruby is probably a bad idea while also giving Dillon a small dose of reality.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Ruby]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Ruby Larose

Amber's sister, a recent BBA graduate who is currently looking for a job in Montreal, and who has moved into the apartment and Amber's room during her search. Ruby and Amber have ... issues. Ruby is prudish and conventional, and so is way out of her depth in this company, but she is determined to get through despite everything. She is also ''fiercely'' determined always to do the right thing (as she sees it), which gives her sometimes surprising strength of character. 1970s television programs seem to be her main form of entertainment and her guide to life.
----
* AgeInappropriateDress: Ruby demonstrates this twice over in her early scenes. When first seen, in public, she's wearing a [[DangerouslyShortSkirt very short skirt]] (indeed, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/an_excuse_to_get_close her very first appearance]] involves an [[WardrobeMalfunction accidental]] [[PantyShot panty flash]], albeit more visible to other characters than to the readers), despite her aggressive disinterest in anything sexual -- for reasons that she later explains, but also perhaps as a symbol of the fact that she's emotionally still a young girl. Later, to sleep, she changes into a [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/time_to_bond_with_my_sister long nightdress]] that would look prudish on your great-grandmother.
* BadLiar: A key trait with Ruby, as [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/try_committing_to_him she actually says herself at one point]] -- albeit sarcastically when refusing to flatter Dillon. The fact that she's blatantly deceiving ''herself'' over her interest in sex just causes her to blush furiously, and her persistent abrasiveness with Amber may largely be caused by the fact that Amber involved her in deceiving their parents for several years.
* BecomingTheMask: Ruby invokes this, perhaps simply as an excuse, when she [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/things_i_could_give shows Dillon her tougher, cynical side]] while in [[BeardOfEvil masculine disguise]]. Then [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/what_kind_of_boyfriend_are_you she uses that tougher side]] to help Dillon out (at a little risk to herself, apparently just because it's the right thing to do).
* BrokenBird: Ruby is a minor textbook example of someone broken by emotional trauma. She's been suffering for a while, too; WordOfGod is that the WildTeenParty during which she was traumatised took place [[http://www.pixietrixcomix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=13780&start=45#p459890 when she was about 14,]] and she's still not recovered in the comic, which is set after she has graduated from university. However, the cause of her bitterness, a minor FreudianExcuse, is [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/no_interference revealed during her first appearance,]] rather than being saved up for some big scene later. Furthermore, her broken emotional state is frequently PlayedForLaughs in this comedy comic, making her simply a [[TheComicallySerious comedy]] [[SourPrudes prude]] or ButtMonkey in many strips.
* ButtMonkey: Ruby is repressed and easily confused, which causes her multiple problems:
** In her first appearance, she accidentally [[PantyShot panty-flashes]] Dillon and Jerzy; later, she stumbles on a collection of porn her sister has starred in, is disgusted to find two of her sister's sex toys just lying around, and then ends up [[spoiler:hiding in a wardrobe, watching and then listening while Jerzy and Dillon have sex]] (which she ''doesn't'' enjoy). Oh, [[WebcomicTime and that was only the first day]].
** The next day she has it pointed out to her that her favorite tutor at university was an exploitative pervert, and her long-standing wardrobe choice is therefore deeply embarrassing.
** The day after that, there's the trip to the swimming pool where she nearly drowns and then experiences what feels to her like a minor HumiliationConga. At which point, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_got_distracted she notices again]] just how life is treating her.
** And that's never mind her past experience of discovering that her sister was a porn star -- [[spoiler:by being exposed to one of Amber's films at a teenage party -- when she was 14]].
** She gets a little more hardened as the story continues, of necessity. But the emotional traumas don't stop. She tells Dillon that hanging around with him and Amber [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/you_will_always_be_my_favorite_girl "is like tuning my TV to the 'Uncomfortable Realizations Channel,' 24-7".]]
* CelibateHeroine: Ruby declares herself uninterested in romance or sex, and just wants to find a good job. Whether this can survive the slightly ham-fisted manipulations of Dillon and Amber, combined with her own evident twinges of desire, remains to be seen, but in the long term, it seems unlikely.
* CharacterDevelopment: When she first appears, Ruby is not only naive but rather priggish; her reaction to the sight of two men kissing (strip #36, May 13, 2013, marginally NSFW) is to think "I must put a stop to this right now!" (although she takes no actual action). However, it rapidly becomes clear that she has an ordinary working libido, and likes the sight of attractive men. She remains in denial for a few days, but she does quite quickly come to acknowledge the truth, telling herself [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_am_a_modern_woman "I have every right to look at men".]]
* CovertPervert: Ruby is not only [[DistractedByTheSexy easily distracted by the gay male activity that keeps happening around her]], she has a tendency to think about men in homosexual scenarios and then deny to herself that she's interested, or mentally change the subject. And when she glimpses Matt's penis in a male restroom (it's a long story), she finds herself looking for longer than is [[MaleRestroomEtiquette polite]]. [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/overly_friendly At this rate, she's unlikely to fool anyone else for very much longer.]]
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Ruby's choice of dress when she first appears is clearly unwise for someone seeking a serious business career. While [[ShesGotLegs she has nice legs]], they may not get her taken seriously enough in interviews, and because she never seems to have learned to crouch rather than bend to pick things up, she's a repeated WardrobeMalfunction waiting to happen. ([[AdultsAreUseless Why nobody has mentioned this to her before is unclear]], though it turns out that [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/makes_me_look_professional the idea of dressing that way was put in her head by someone else]].) Despite any problems she has in dealing with Dillon, he may have done her a ''huge'' favor just by pointing this out.
* DeadpanSnarker: Ruby seems to have ambitions in this direction, but she needs to work on her deadpan; she's often too excitable or neurotic. Still, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/try_committing_to_him presented with an easy target by Dillon,]] [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/no_one_is_perfect she manages okay.]] If she can learn a bit more self-knowledge and greater insight into others' weaknesses, she might even become the SnarkKnight, but at present she's too young to apply her cynicism to herself. On the other hand, if her more negative emotions get the better of her, she could become more of a StepfordSnarker.
* DefrostingIceQueen: There are, inevitably, hints of this with Ruby, although she's more immature and irritable than a typical chilly ice queen. In fact, her cold façade seems to be a thin protective screen; it collapses quickly at the sight of a cute kitten or Dillon being [[LargeHam hammily emotional]]. Nor may any defrosting be that slow a process; although her first date (of sorts), with Andy, has problems, her interactions with him suggest that she's perfectly capable of being polite and even quite sweet.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Ruby is prone to this, as she's naive, nervous, and way out of her social depth most of the time, and she's prone to gabbling under stress. [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_am_still_staring_at_it This is a particularly uncomfortable example for her, trying to pass in male disguise having taken her places she doesn't want to be.]]
* DoesNotLikeMen: {{Averted|Trope}}. Ruby ''seems'' to feel this way in her early appearances, but it turns out that her real issue is that she fears ''sex''. Men -- potentially any men -- represent sex to her, and she seems initially to think that most or all of them are sex-obsessed. She assumes before she meets him that Dillon will be "pervy" (though that may be because he's a friend of Amber's), and she's nervously curious when she finds herself alone in a man's bedroom, and surprised that it's not more sordid. This phobia is backed by her minor FreudianExcuse, and she looks like she's being set up to learn better. (Those who find her attitude grating may call this a HeelFaceTurn).\\
\\
In fact, as she keeps being [[DistractedByTheSexy distracted by the sight of attractive men]], it becomes clear that her dislike is not as complete as she wants to suggest; she [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/it_is_complex finds the prospect of her first date more confusing than repulsive,]] and once she's been dragged out, her behavior towards her date, Andy, is perfectly polite and even pleasant, and she finds the prospect of kissing him scary but not disgusting. It seems that, so long as she isn't feeling threatened or provoked, she has no real sense of hostility towards men in general.
* FishOutOfWater: Ruby is a bit of a CountryMouse, but more "ordinary small town" than "country", and not matching the specific norms of that subtype. Mostly, her problem is trying to be asexual in a fairly highly sexualised webcomic.
* FreudianSlip: [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/very_very_very_soon The first clear evidence that Ruby may be kidding herself about her interest in men.]]
* HeroicBSOD: Hero or not, Ruby seems to be prone to these. Sometimes, she just blanks for a moment, as when [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/something_you_are_not_telling_me Amber asks if she is a lesbian]]. [[note]](Apparently unable to process the idea, she [[ComicallyMissingThePoint semi-comically misses the point]], and assumes that Amber is ''confessing''. Ironically, Amber was established to be bisexual in ''Webcomic/MenageA3'', although her behaviour so far in this comic has been entirely heterosexual.)[[/note]] However, greater stress can cause her full-on blue screens:
** [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/banish_these_thoughts She suffers a pop art-styled mental crash effect]] after [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_am_curious_about_her_work Andy accidentally hits her]] with something that should be an insult but which actually [[ArmourPiercingQuestion penetrates]] some totally pointless mental armour she has erected.
** Seconds later, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/your_expectations_of_me she suffers a more serious BSOD,]] which lasts for some time and multiple strips -- simply because of the prospect of her first kiss.
* HollywoodNerd: Ruby isn't actually described as a {{nerd}}, but that's really her characterisation; nor does anyone bother denying that she's attractive, although she herself tends to avoid the subject. Still, for someone who takes little care of her appearance, she's basically a stunner in cute glasses, sometimes ill-chosen clothes, and too many angry scowls. Her figure is on the slim side of optimum, her complexion is fine, and she apparently moves gracefully. She only has to walk down the street in a pair of designer jeans to attract every straight male in sight. Few real people with her priorities would be so casually attractive.
* HotLibrarian: Pretty well from the moment she walked through the door -- certainly as soon as her personality was established -- readers were assuming that Ruby was going to embody this trope. She's certainly got the prim and prudish attitude and the glasses, she's cute enough, and she's going to ''have'' to unwind a little eventually if she isn't going to snap under the strain; in fact, she all but lampshades the trope just by existing. Whether she'll ever actually let her hair down (metaphorically -- she actually wears it in a short bob) remains to be seen; she'll have to learn how to act sexy before she can exploit her attractiveness. She might just consider that undignified even once she's relaxed a little, and so continually avert the trope.
* InformedAbility: Ruby's intelligence. She has a full college education, and is definitely a bookish {{nerd}}, but she's never shown any signs of being more cerebral than the rest of the cast, apart perhaps from some ''slightly'' sharper sarcastic lines in her dialogue. Admittedly she hasn't had much chance to show off any book learning, she's also supposed to be terribly [[VirginityMakesYouStupid naive]], and this could all be put down as conventional [[IdiotBall comic stupidity]], but it's still not clear that the writers have much of a handle on her supposed smarts.
* TheIngenue: Somewhat {{deconstructed|Trope}} in the persona of Ruby. She fits the trope in many ways; she's younger than the rest of the main cast, woefully naive (and at least one older figure has taken advantage of this in the past), virginal, and if not immune to sexual innuendo, certainly very bad at handling it. However, she's also petulant, arrogant, and insecure, and her "purity" is treated as both a symptom and a cause of emotional damage. She's ''also'' determined to succeed on her own terms, and would probably be angry if anyone tried to play Prince Charming for her.
* KindheartedCatLover: Ruby develops this trait fairly early on, possibly in an attempt by the writers to soften her initially abrasive image.
* LuminescentBlush: Ruby is capable of inflicting these on herself by dint of her over-active imagination, [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/very_very_wrong as here]] and [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/your_expectations_of_me here.]] This may occasionally be a CrushBlush when she's thinking about Andy, but even then it seems to be more the sexualised thoughts that she associates with him than her feelings for Andy himself which trigger the blush.
* {{Meganekko}}: Ruby could be considered a western version of this type, being at least book-smart and quite cute in her large glasses. However, her [[HairTriggerTemper short temper]] and uncertainties about men may disqualify her.
* NeatFreak: [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/likes_and_dislikes Ruby suffers from this]] as just a ''minor'' aspect of her personality.
* {{Nerd}}: Ruby, in a slightly unusual female form. She's [[HollywoodNerd not actually unattractive]], her social ineptitude takes the form of abrasiveness rather than bumbling, she doesn't seem very interested in science or computers (her degree is in Business Administration), and we have no particular evidence about her physical fitness. However, the [[NerdGlasses glasses]], the opinionated attitude, and the privileging of intellect over social relationships, make her classic nerd. She's just the sort of nerd who {{geek}}s despise. And in her case, [[NerdsAreVirgins nerds are definitely virgins]].
* NerdGlasses: Ruby goes for the classic "unflatteringly large" version -- though she does perhaps manage to make them look a little bit {{adorkable}}.
* ParalyzingFearOfSexuality: Ruby is [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/turn_around prone to this problem,]] although she's so deep in denial she isn't always paralyzed; after she's seen a few sexual scenes, her imagination starts running out of control at every opportunity (she clearly finds {{guy on guy|isHot}} ''very'' hot), and she keeps talking herself into looking more, despite her disapproval -- [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/very_very_wrong as here.]]
* PowerHair: One might guess that Ruby has ambitions in this direction.
* RightlySelfRighteous: A trope occasionally seen in Ruby. She can be priggish and judgemental, but [[JerkassHasAPoint she has a point]] when she criticises Amber for her years of lying to their parents, and she's prepared to call Dillon out for his hypocrisy when his friends just enable him. She's often confused, but she tries to live by her moral code.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Hinted at by [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/it_is_complex Amber's own response when she gets Ruby into an "elegant" dress.]] However, intentionally or not, the effect was ambiguous at best for some readers, who felt that Ruby [[BeautifulAllAlong looked just fine]] in [[NerdsAreSexy her normal style of dress]], and that Amber and Dillon's efforts verged on an UnnecessaryMakeover.
* SillyRabbitRomanceIsForKids: More or less Ruby's attitude at the start of her personal story in the comic.
* SweetPollyOliver: Ruby disguises herself as "Rudy" for one evening, at Dillon's suggestion, to support him while he spies on Jerzy and Angel. He, meanwhile, [[DisguisedInDrag drags up as a woman]]. She probably opts for male disguise because the alternative would be to pretend to be "Dilla's" ''girlfriend'', and she doesn't want to be taken for a lesbian, or because she's carried away by the idea of playing detectives; she does throw herself into the game with more enthusiasm than might have been expected, and also claims that [[BecomingTheMask some of Rudy rubs off on herself]]. It's not perhaps the most convincing disguise ever, but Ruby does manage to fool her own sister from a moderate distance.
* WhenSheSmiles: Ruby is slim, with good legs and an expressive face -- but she goes through a lot of the comic in a state of anger or stress, and her face expresses ''that'' all too well. Hence, her occasional sincere smiles are ''interesting.'' But they do need to be sincere; hysterical laughter or forced grins don't work so well on her, and her reactions to cute kittens are arguably too extreme to be attractive.
* YaoiFangirl: Ruby denies it fervently, but [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_do_not_speak_japanese Angel's suggestion that she has fujoshi tendencies]] is clearly accurate.

!!Andy

A hunky, heterosexual, and amazingly oblivious young lifeguard at the local swimming pool, who keeps getting dates with Ruby despite her best efforts.

* CluelessChickMagnet: Andy definitely [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/help_you_measure fits in this category.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Chanelle]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Chanelle Numberfine

Amber's former colleague from her porn days, friend, and occasional drinking buddy. [[PornNames That surname may not be the one she was born with]].
----
* CoitusUninterruptus: Chanelle is clearly a mistress of this. (See strip #10, February 8 2013, marginally NSFW.)

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jacob]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Jacob

A junior pet shop employee who inveigles Dillon into doing his job for him, and [[spoiler:loses that job as a result.
----
* PuppyDogEyes: Used by this cute (if rather [[CreepyChild creepy]]) kid [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/a_gadjillion_crickets here.]]
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Present (in limited form) in the obnoxious (and faintly [[CreepyChild creepy]]) form of Jacob, who not only manipulates Dillon through cuteness and flattery, but who seems to recognise Dillon's attraction to Richie well enough to exploit it -- although he seems to think of it in terms of some kind of manly comradeship rather than sexual attraction, as he assumes that Ruby is Dillon's girl and doesn't understand when Dillon talks about hitting on Richie.

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Matt]]
xxxxxxxxxxxGraphicxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Matt

Dillon's former boyfriend from ''Webcomics/MenageA3''. Matt is a bisexual underwear model, and a danger junkie, which makes him [[TheCasanova ''extremely'' unreliable romantically]]; Dillon is still smarting from being two-timed by him, although [[CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem there's still a lot of mutual attraction]]. However, Matt is usually nice enough if you don't have to rely on him for fidelity.
----
* ChivalrousPervert: Matt encounters the disguised Ruby at a men's urinal. He's amused and flattered when she boggles at a glimpse of his ... [[GagPenis equipment]], and then clearly spots that she's a disguised woman within seconds. However, although he's laughing under his breath, his response is to provide her with [[http://www.stickydillybuns.com/strips-sdb/i_am_a_manly_man a get-out that saves her from further embarrassment.]]

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Minew]]
%%xxxxxxxxxxxGraphics_to_comexxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
!!Minew

Ruby's pet kitten. Ruby doesn't always feel able to talk to the other human characters, and Minew seems to be a good listener.
----
* BilingualBonus: Amber suggests the name "Minew". "Minou" (pronounced "Me new") is a French Canadian term that means "kitty."
* CuteKitten: Minew is not only cute (arguably mostly as an InformedAttribute -- he's mostly shown just sitting there), the chance to pet him instantly suppresses Ruby's [[HairTriggerTemper short temper]].
