Plus, he's an avowed science fiction geek who makes constant references and shows the most genuine glee about being on a spaceship.

** Of course this may be a case of DracoInLeatherPants. Young's version of "the greater good" is keeping the crew alive. Rush's version of "the greater good" is painting Young as a killer for Rush's benefit...
*** Rush makes the point that he did this because Young wouldn't make the hard choices that leaders sometimes need to make, and arguably does have something of a point, Jerkass or not.
*** As the series goes on it shows that Young has no problem with hard choices. The JerkAss part is that Rush pretty much frames Young because Young didn't make [[ForScience the choices that Rush wanted]].
**** And, one can respond that Rush's choices end up working better than Young's to which one can respond they could have not worked and so on, showing that, indeed, Rush is a true BaseBreaker.
** Then again for most people the fact he marooned over eighty people in the Pilot, without their consent. Away from their love ones and in constant danger with nothing but a grin pretty much [[JerkAss summed the character up for them.]]
** His decisions in "Aftermath" leading to [[spoiler: Riley's death]] doesn't help either.
