** For the most part at least. He's becoming less pure as the show continues, but, to his credit, some of his more outrageous actions lately (becoming a pimp in "Butters' Bottom Bitch", helping Cartman hold a PF Chang's hostage at gunpoint in "The China Probrem", attacking a boy with diabetes in "Going Native", etc.) have been due to either naivety or stress.

* EvilIsPetty: His evil deeds as Professor Chaos are mostly limited to stealing chalkboard erasers, switching restaurant orders, and trying to flood the earth with a garden hose.

* AbusiveParents: And how. They [[YouAreGrounded ground him]] for pretty much everything short of breathing, try to sell him to Paris Hilton in "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset", beat the crap out of him after it was actually Cartman (imitating Butters) who cussed them out on the phone, even try to murder him by abandoning the car he's in and letting it drown into the river in his own episode, and chain him in the basement for a week at the end of "Marjorine" (where he faked his death in order to have a new identity as a girl). And they are saints compared to his grandma, who bullies him constantly.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Several episodes, but "Butters' Very Own Episode" deserves an honorable mention, as it is the first time he is given his own spotlight, with the boys DemotedToExtra, thus preparing the audience for the more major roles he would come to play in the later season.

* AmbiguousDisorder: Butters has some idiosyncrasies that fall under the UsefulNotes/AspergerSyndrome category: He exhibits some odd and repetitive CharacterTics like fidgeting his knuckles together, stuttering a lot, singing to himself, pulling his pants all the way down when going pee, and playing with random objects (e.g. cow poop in "Kenny Dies" and apples in "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset") during his free time. Also, the ThemeTune for "The Butters Show" in "Butters' Very Own Episode" describes him as a "boy who can laugh at a storm cloud"; Aspies tend to laugh at things that aren't intended to be funny. On the topic of clumsiness (another common trait of AS), Butters' tap-dancing caused one of his shoes to fling up in the air and accidentally kill people not once, but twice. He's also LiteralMinded at times; in "The Hobbit" when Wendy asks him if he's "just an asshole", Butters assures her otherwise by stating that he has "arms, legs, and everything". In terms of social status, while Butters is fairly outgoing and friendly, a lot of the kids think he's strange, and he didn't have a good time "fitting in" with the other three boys while taking Kenny's place.

* BornUnlucky: His birthday is on September 11th [[note]]although it could've been before 2001 since he has been around in prior episodes; even his breakout episode "Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub" aired two years before 9/11[[/note]] and is constantly grounded for little to no reason.

* CheerfulChild: Despite being the ButtMonkey by everyone, including his own parents.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: The closest thing the show has; however, Butters-centric episodes often subvert this, such as "Butters' Bottom Bitch" and "The Tale of Scrotie [=McBoogerballs=]".

** Played much straighter with the New Kid in "The Stick of Truth". In fact, The game all but states that the New Kid considers Butters his best friend out of the [[MagneticHero several]] they've made throughout his adventure. They're even still friends in "The Fractured But Whole" and "Phone Destroyer". Though if the player makes the New Kid female, this trope gets changed to PlatonicLifePartners, ShipTease, or LikeBrotherandSister.

** Butters's parents ground, beat and berate him constantly, his mother went crazy and attempted to drown him in a lake, his parents attempt to sell him to Paris Hilton, Cartman convinces him the world is ending and he lives in a bunker and a junkyard for several weeks, he gets committed to a mental asylum and anally probed by a machine for eight straight hours... the creators ended up having to put a moratorium on torturing Butters because it was just becoming too much.

* MistakenForGay:

* SuddenNameChange: Was originally called "Swanson" in the Season 2 episode "Conjoined Fetus Lady" (Stan refers to him by this name in the opening dodgeball scene), as well as "Puff Puff" in storyboards, but was renamed "Butters" in "Two Guys Naked in a Hot Tub".

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: His alter-ego Professor Chaos was created after he was rejected as Stan, Kyle, & Cartman's new friend.

One of the kids at South Park Elementary. He used to be a background character with little importance, but he became a major character shortly after "Kenny Dies" (and actually temporarily stayed dead). He's a WideEyedIdealist who should be commended for remaining so after the world tries its hardest to give him reasons not to be.

His "evil" alter-ego is Professor Chaos, who is the arch-rival of Coon and Friends.

Starting with Season 3 onwards, Butters' personality is established and he slowly gains larger and larger roles as the series progresses. While still absent from the Boys' iconic bus stop scenes, he's essentially an official member of their group these days.

* TokenReligiousTeammate: Not a huge part of his character, but comes up a few times, like in "The Death of Eric Cartman."

* YouAreGrounded: Butters fears this more than any other punishment in the world, [[AbusiveParents with good reason]].
