In fact, the ''only'' reason his plan ''didn't'' work was because [[spoiler: Sonic's fight with the first boss caused its arm to get stuck in the cannon, causing it to backfire when he activated it.]]

Though he fails to stop Sonic from destroying all his generators, Eggman still had enough energy to power his machine.
