* BigBadDuumvirate: One of the three primary threats of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006''. It's more on Mephiles' side, though, since Iblis has no intelligence to speak of.
* CompleteImmortality: Both Iblis and Mephiles have shown the ability to withstand considerable damage and regenerate. This, alongside the fact they don't seem to age, implies that they are immortal.
* EldritchAbomination: Continuing the trend of Lovecraftian enemies within the series.
* FusionDance: The two of them can combine to regain their original form, Solaris.

* CoolSword: One
that Sega resembles a cross between a scimitar and a straight-edge razor.
* DeathByIrony: Used a Flame

* DomesticAbuser: Heavily
implied Mephiles became to be this to Shahra. His WeCanRuleTogether offer to her sounds like something an abusive boyfriend would say and his VillainousBreakdown sounds like an abusive boyfriend trying to get his girlfriend back on his side.

* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:Baked in lava.]]
* FinalBossNewDimension: The fight against Alf-Layla-wa-Layla takes place in a giant black void. Considering that at this point, all but the last few pages of the Arabian Nights have been sucked dry, this makes sense.
* FreudianExcuse: It's mentioned that he's been abused in the past. Though said abuse was partly a punishment for crimes he committed, so it doesn't diminish his HateSink status.
* HateSink: Erazor Djinn is a power hungry, unempathetic and purely self-serving douchebag who has nothing remotely sympathetic or likable going for him, and he acts extremely arrogant and haughty towards everyone around him. He treats Shahra like dirt and after her sacrifice, he has the gall to mock her as being weak. And to say nothing of how he puts Sonic's life on the line to further his own ends, and talks down to him and insults him as being a rat. [[spoiler:You won't so much as shed a tear for him when Sonic seals him in the lamp forever and destroys it.]]
* HumiliationConga: Hoo boy! It wasn't enough that he had to get his ass kicked by Sonic. Oh no, he had to suffer. To elaborate, [[spoiler:Just as he's boasting to Sonic that he's immortal, Sonic pulls out the lamp used to seal him away. Sonic then uses the lamp to painfully force Erazor to grant him three wishes: That he revives Shahra, return the Arabian Nights to the way they were, and be sealed in the lamp for eternity. The mighty genie is reduced to shamelessly begging Shahra, a weak genie of the ring, for help as he's sealed away. The final nail in his coffin is when Sonic throws the lamp into the Ifrit's lava pool, destroying Djinn forever.]]
* InTheirOwnImage: His ultimate goal, once he's acquired the World Rings, is to remake the world of the Arabian Nights in his image, and then move on to Sonic's world and repeat the process. He even states as such during the final boss.
-->'''Erazor''': I will remake this world and this reality in my own image!
* JackassGenie: Oh ''yeah''.
* KickTheDog: [[spoiler:Mocks Shahra as a mere Genie of the Ring after killing her.]]
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Sonic is more than willing to give him his just desserts — forcing him to grant wishes against his will to restore the Arabian Nights and revive Shahra, sealing him in his lamp again forever, and then destroying his lamp to finish him off once and for all — after all the hell Erazor put him, Shahra, and the Arabian Nights world through. While destroying the lamp was a straight PayEvilIntoEvil YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness moment, Sonic ''did'' need the djinn's power to solve the situation, but being able to ''force'' him to help and give him a HUGE HumilliationConga is a nice bonus ''and'' a huge CatharsisFactor for both Sonic AND the player.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: [[spoiler:Feels no regret when he accidentally kills Shahra, and even has the gall to mock her.]]
* ManipulativeBastard: He is to Shahra.
* MeaningfulName: Both. Erazor Djinn is a mix of 'Eraser' and 'Razor', as to how he's tearing apart the Arabian Nights, and he uses a straight razor as a sword. And again as Alf-Layla-wa-Layla, which translates as 'A thousand nights and one night'. He's calling himself [[AGodAmI The Arabian Nights]]. Also doubles as a BilingualBonus.
* MisanthropeSupreme: In the past, he was punished for his misdeeds and sealed away in his lamp, to be trapped until he granted the wishes of 1000 people. When his sentence was finished, rather than mellow him out, all it did was renew Erazor's hatred for people.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: Has six arms as Alf-Layla-wa-Layla.
* OneWingedAngel: Alf-Layla-wa-Layla.
* OpportunisticBastard: Early on, he tries to shoot Shahra with a flaming arrow, but Sonic [[TakingTheBullet took the hit]] and was afflicted with a life-draining curse. Erazor uses it to his advantage, telling Sonic he'll remove the arrow and break the curse if Sonic gathers all of the World Rings for him.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Spends his time at his Night Palace while Sonic's out collecting rings. He later summons the Ifrit demon to burn the remaining pages of the book.
* PlayingWithFire: [[spoiler:Ironic, considering his death.]]
* PowerEchoes: Alf Layla-wa-Layla's voice has a prominent echo effect.
* PowerFloats: Is never seen walking.
* PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep: Inverted for Alf Layla-wa-Layla, who has a much higher-pitched voice than Erazor Djinn.
* RealMenWearPink: Has pink skin.
* SadisticChoice: Gives one to Sonic at the outset of the game via the flame of judgement curse: Either Sonic delivers the Seven World Rings to him, or the flame will kill him. [[spoiler:Then it's [[MortonsFork subverted]] when he reveals that he was planning on sacrificing Sonic to obtain complete control of the rings.]]
* SealedEvilInACan: Prior to the game, he was imprisoned in his lamp and would not be released until he granted the wishes of 1000 people. [[spoiler:He gets sealed back in the lamp at the end of the game, though then the lamp is destroyed.]]
* SlouchOfVillainy: He's seen as this [[https://youtu.be/E5ErSymGoEc?t=93 in the opening]] before shifting to an AssKickingPose [[RuleOfCool for no stated reason]].
* TheSociopath: No JackassGenie isn't one after all.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: He is by ''far'' the darkest of the Storybook Series villains, the whole [[spoiler:''murdering Shahra onscreen'']] thing doesn't help his case.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:When Sonic reseals him back into his lamp.]]
-->[[spoiler:'''Erazor''': Shahra, I know you're there! Please, stop him! We can start over, the two of us! I swear! I swear it! The world is mine! I cannot be denied by that filthy rat! Whyyyyy?!]]

game instead of Eggman (who appears by proxy of King Shahryar, but isn't the villain at all).
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Wears pants and a cape but no shirt.
* WeCanRuleTogether: Offers this to Shahra.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Tries to sacrifice Sonic after he brings him the Secret Rings to gain control of them. [[spoiler:Get's done in by Sonic [[BewareTheNiceOnes pulling this on him by destroying the lamp (and him) after using up all 3 wishes.]]]]

* BadassMustache: His "whiskers".
* BerserkButton: Don't pull his mustache.
* BreathWeapon: Breathes out fire during the fight with him.
* BurningWithAnger: One of his cutscene portraits has his head aflame.
* CyberCyclops: He has two eye sockets, but only the left one has a visible (and [[GlowingMechanicalEyes glowing]]) eye, presumably to simulate the [[EyepatchOfPower stereotypical pirate eyepatch]].
* DualBoss: With Johnny.

* IllNeverTellYouWhatImTellingYou: How Sonic and the gang manage to enter his hideout. Even more embarrassing in that it's ''Marine'' who tricks him into revealing how to unlock the door.
* IneffectualSympatheticVillain: While not harmless, as he can hold his own in a fight, in terms of competence... he's a little lacking.
* KilledOffScreen: It's implied he was caught in the explosion after Sonic and Blaze defeat the Ghost Titan.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Has his own [[https://youtu.be/Hl-CaL-N6fM sinister, cartoonish theme]] that plays whenever he appears in cutscenes.

world at night? Those are [[PiecesOfGod pieces of its body]].
* AttackItsWeakPoint: In its first form in both versions, Sonic must attack its green eyes. As Perfect Dark Gaia in the [=PS2=]/Wii version, Sonic must again attack its eyes.
* BigBadEnsemble: With Dr. Eggman in ''Sonic Unleashed''.
* BodyHorror: When it goes OneWingedAngel, four arms sprout out of its body, complete with AlienBlood. Its ''jaw splits open'' to reveal seven large green eyes and lots of tongues.
* CastingAShadow: When fully matured, it can shroud the earth in darkness.
* CombatTentacles: Large purple ones that can form a barrier around it and can impact targets with explosive force.
* CompleteImmortality: Much like Light Gaia, Dark Gaia can never die, as he is necessary for the planet's cycle of death and rebirth. Being defeated by Sonic will only render it dormant until it gains enough negative energy to destroy the earth.
* DarkIsEvil: Just in the case the name wasn't enough of a giveaway.
* DemonicPossession: The Dark Gaia monsters can possess others, instilling negative emotions in them.
* EldritchAbomination: Lives within the Earth and tries to bring its destruction, was born at the beginning of time, is the representation of night, darkness, and destruction, and is a colossal, immensely powerful monstrosity with a head-mouth full of eyes, teeth, and tongues. Then it goes OneWingedAngel and manages to become even ''more'' monstrous.
* EvilCounterpart: Of Light Gaia, [[spoiler:AKA Chip]].
* EvilLaugh: At several points during cutscenes and the fight itself, it makes vocalizations which sound a lot like [[EvilSoundsRaspy raspy]] laughs.
* EyeBeam: Can unleashing beams of energy from its eyes as Perfect Dark Gaia.
* EyeScream: Sonic inflicts this on him during the final battle and ultimately defeats it by charging straight into its center eye.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: It gains three green eyes on top of its head and has seven more ''inside its mouth.''
* FlatCharacter: Dark Gaia has no real motivation for its actions or characterization. Justified in that Dark Gaia is a mindless, malevolent force of nature as opposed to an actual plotting villain.
* FinalBoss: Of ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed''.
* FisticuffsBoss: The [=PS2=]/Wii version is basically a boxing match between Dark Gaia and the Gaia Colossus.
* FrickinLaserBeams: Its SignatureMove is to fire large beams of energy.
* GoForTheEye: It's all that Sonic can do to take down Dark Gaia.
* TheHeartless: The Dark Gaia monsters are basically negative emotions given form by its dark energy.
* {{Kaiju}}: The ''biggest'' opponent fought in the video game continuities, to the point its comparable to a mountain.
* LovecraftLite: Is a Lovecraftian EldritchAbomination out to end the world, but Sonic [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu can still kick its ass]] [[spoiler:with assistance from Chip AKA Light Gaia, Dark Gaia's GoodCounterpart]].
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily: Perfect Dark Gaia has ''a lot'' of huge teeth.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: Has six arms as Perfect Dark Gaia.
* OneWingedAngel: Perfect Dark Gaia, where it grows two more pairs of arms and opens its seven true eyes inside its mouth. In this state, it's capable of shrouding the world in its darkness in order to begin the process of wiping out all life on the planet.
* OverlyLongTongue: Perfect Dark Gaia has two long, thin tongues on the sides of its big one.
* PhysicalGod: As an ElementalEmbodiment of primordial darkness, night and negative emotions, it's hard to call it anything else. It also shares a rare role with Solaris in that its capable of knocking rings out of Super Sonic as Perfect Dark Gaia, and even with the Gaia Colossus backing him up Sonic is still forced to the point of exhaustion fighting it.
* PressXToNotDie: Makes the player do this [[UpToEleven 60 times]] in its Perfect Dark Gaia form in the [=PS3=]/360 versions of ''Sonic Unleashed''.
* PurpleIsTheNewBlack: Dark Gaia's energy is shown as purple-colored.
* SealedEvilInACan: Has been inside the Earth since the beginning of time and constantly undergoes a process of breaking free, destroying the world, and going back in once its done. Eggman opens the can prematurely at the beginning of the game (which is why it explodes into millions of pieces that scatter across the globe and become monsters), and it's back in the can by the end of the game.
* ShooOutTheClowns: Gives the equivalent of a DopeSlap to Eggman upon its revival in the Earth's core and knocks him clear out of the area to fight Sonic [[spoiler:and Light Gaia (Chip)]].
* SlasherSmile: Dark Gaia appears to sport one due to the eyes above its closed head-mouth.

A young sorceress from the world of ancient Camelot. She summons Sonic to her world to help stop King Arthur from terrorizing her kingdom. However, she has other intentions...

* AndIMustScream: After being split from Iblis, Shadow sealed him away in the Scepter of Darkness. Imagine what it must be like to be stuck in solitary confinement ''for a whole ten years''! It's no wonder he's insane when he gets out!
** Shadow tries to pull this on him again in the end of his story, but he averts it by having absorbed Shadow's power through his shade.
* ArchEnemy: Despite the fact that he only interacted in one game, he was a pretty personal foe to Shadow, more so than any other character in the game.
* AxCrazy: Let's see, his plans essentially amount to the destruction of existence itself, his hatred of Shadow is almost to the point of psychosis, and he also laughs exhileratedly at [[spoiler:Sonic's (supposed) death]]? Clearly, being ripped from his body and stuck in solitary confinement for a decade has caused him to fit that to a T.
* TheBadGuyWins: He actually succeeds in his plan to [[spoiler:destroy the planet, and also heavily damaged the time-space continuum, and it is even implied that the time-space continuum was also rapidly dying throughout the final story. The Final Story is basically the heroes trying to set things right]].
* BigBad: Of ''Sonic 2006''.
* BigNo: In the brief cinematic in which Solaris's core is destroyed, a faint "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!" [[spoiler:in Mephiles's voice can be heard in the background audio]].
* TheBusCameBack: Mephiles reappears as an unlockable playable character in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'', [[RetGone somehow]].
* CastingAShadow: He can meld into a LivingShadow, bring shadows to life and merge them together to form larger shadow monsters, hide in the shadows of others, absorb shadows to grow stronger, and fire dark energy blasts.
* ColourCodedCharacters: The main difference between him and Shadow; initially, Mephiles's stripes are a gray-blue instead of Shadow's red.
* ComplexityAddiction: His plans could be... a bit simpler. [[spoiler:He seems to take note of this in the Final Story when he simply opts to just kill Sonic directly to cause Elise to cry.]]
* CreateYourOwnHero: Played with; from his perspective, he attacks Shadow and sends him to the ruined future after Shadow sealed him in the Scepter of Darkness. From Shadow's perspective, Mephiles attacked ''him'' first, [[NiceJobFixingItVillain giving him a reason to want to engage him and seal him.]]
* DarkIsEvil: Just look at his name; Mephiles the ''[[MeaningfulName Dark]]''.
** [[spoiler:Given he's the mind of Solaris,]] the darkness is a good indication of [[AxCrazy his state of mind.]]
* DirtyCoward: He usually fights when the opponent isn't looking; he even [[spoiler:murdered Sonic]] while his back was turned.
** A dose of FridgeBrilliance, [[spoiler:considering he was the ''mind and will'' of Solaris while Iblis, his counterpart, was the ''raw power'']]. It'd stand to reason he's not powerful enough to take anyone on in a head-on fight without some additional support. In other words, he [[KnowWhenToFoldEm knows his limitations]].
* EldritchAbomination: He is a spirit that embodies [[spoiler:the mind and will of a god]], but beyond this there is no real telling what he is. He doesn't even seem to have a true material form, the closest one being a primordial shadow. He reveals a crystalline form in Shadow's story, but nobody can seem to determine if this is truly what Mephiles looks like. [[spoiler:There's also the fact that, when he's in his proper body, he's actually a god that can feast on time itself.]]
* EvilCounterpart: He's basically a malicious version of Shadow.
* EvilLaugh: He lets out a good one when he [[spoiler:kills Sonic]].
* EvilTwin: To Shadow.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Franchise/DragonBall Cell]]. A time-travelling, manipulative entity with self-duplicating powers born of a scientific experiment who wishes to attain his ultimate form by merging with another being, succeeds in killing the protagonist and is opposed by a time-traveller hailing from a ruined future. It also helps that Sliver himself is an Expy of Future Trunks and Team Sonic's staff has admitted on numerous occasions to being huge fans of ''Dragon Ball''.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He has a particularly eloquent way of speaking, seemingly offers a way for Silver and Blaze to save the future, and bows to Shadow and thanks him for his form. When push comes to shove, however, he's a vicious and manipulative coward who is quick to stop with the false compliments when somebody catches onto him.
* ForTheEvulz: The only suggestible reason that he wants to completely destroy space and time. [[spoiler:Beyond [[EvilIsPetty being pissed at some scientists experimenting on him]].]]
* TheFourthWallWillNotProtectYou: Downplayed. In the Last Story, he catches the purple Chaos Emerald and slowly turns his head. Perhaps due to the rushed development's lack of polish, it's easy to assume he's listening to something within the emerald, but in reality, he's ''looking at the player'', completely aware that you're there!
* FragileSpeedster: Played with: He's very intelligent, capable of teleportation, time travel, and energy manipulation. However, he has noticeable trouble taking physical punishment while fighting Shadow, although he was shown taking on and withstanding several shotgun/minigun blows from Omega when confronting him in a cutscene.

Shadow accuses him of [[OmnicidalManiac craving destruction]], but he never confirms or denies this. Is he truly that evil? Does he consider this a way of getting even with Earth for ripping him from his body and putting him in a small cage for ten years?
* ItOnlyWorksOnce: Shadow was able to seal his spectral form inside the Scepter of Darkness, but after taking on a more corporeal form by merging with Shadow's... [[ShapedLikeItself shadow]]... in the present, he grows powerful enough to simply shatter the Scepter when Shadow tries to put him back in it.

* KickTheDog: He killed Sonic just to see Elise cry, and when she cried, he laughed in a sadistic manner.
* KnightOfCerebus: Mephiles is unarguably one of the darkest villains in the franchise. Other villains either had somewhat comical moments (even Metal Sonic) or took some time to voice their motives. Mephiles never does anything that can be considered comical and leaves the players to [[HiddenAgendaVillain decipher his ''true'' motives for themselves]]. Whenever he enters the story, any sense of lightheartedness evacuates and he's constantly played seriously, toying with others and ruining their day for the fun of it before moving on with his big plan. The damage he does is so staggering, so severe that the only way to clean up is to [[spoiler:throw away the timeline and start a new one where he has no involvement]].
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: The implied reason why he often pulls [[DirtyCoward dirty tactics]] on his opponents is because he's lacking in [[spoiler:Solaris's]] physical power and has to play mind games.
* LackOfEmpathy: He taunts Omega about [[spoiler:his part in sealing away Shadow in the future]], and he laughs [[spoiler:after (supposedly) murdering Sonic, and especially at Elise's sorrow and mental anguish at his (supposed) death]].
* LargeHam: Probably the other reason a lot of people like him, what with being voiced by Creator/DanGreen and all...
* LaughingMad: He laughs quite exhileratedly when [[spoiler:murdering Sonic]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: "Mephiles' Whisper", an eerie piano theme that transitions to much louder instruments.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: Both Mephiles and Iblis. Mephiles being the conscious mind, and Iblis being the raw power of Solaris.
* LivingShadow: Not only is he the ShadowArchetype to Shadow, but he's also born (well, reborn is more accurate) from Shadow's shadow. That's right, [[RuleOfThree Shadow's shadow became a Shadow]].
* ManipulativeBastard: This along with TheChessmaster. He manipulated seemingly everyone in the story over 210 years just so he could [[spoiler:cause Elise to develop feelings towards Sonic, only to kill Sonic, thus freeing Iblis from inside Elise, allowing himself to merge with Iblis to become Solaris]]. Even more impressive is that he doesn't actually lie to Silver at all. He just leaves out a TEEEENY but important piece of information.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Overlaps with MeaningfulName. Mephiles = Mephistopheles, the demon from Faust, sometimes associated with Satan. Likewise, Iblis is the Islamic name for the Devil before his fall. See below in the Iblis section for more.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: In the Last Story, he shows the power to [[spoiler:bring every Chaos Emerald right to him as soon as he gets one]], a power that is extremely useful in the ''Sonic'' games, with no prior reference or reason for this power to have appeared. Unfortunately, it's one of many parts of the issues that make people believe he has an extremely large case of ComplexityAddiction, since [[spoiler:in the future, he didn't show this power at all, and he gave a Chaos Emerald to Silver to start off the plot by way of TimeTravel]].
* NoMouth: His muzzle kind of inflates and deflates when he talks, though.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: His crystalline form he uses for half the game is much more detailed than any of the other anthropomorphic characters, and lacks feet. Even in his (very rare) other appearances, the amount of detail stays.
* NothingIsScarier: The Prima game guide doesn't seem to know what he is. His description mostly consists of theories and rumors, constantly referring to him as "it". The only thing it ''can'' say is that "it must never be allowed to capture the Chaos Emeralds."
* NotSoDifferent: He is in a way a darker version of Shadow's ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' personality. Both are chessmasters that played the desires of another to follow suit to their plans (Shadow to Eggman, Mephiles to Silver). Both desired revenge on humanity (especially those that experimented on them), though for Mephiles, revenge was only a side-motive. Both have planet-sized egos. And both nearly succeeded. Shadow's plan only failed because he decided he didn't want to go through with it; Mephiles' plan actually ''worked'' and the heroes had to really struggle to undo it.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: He sent Silver to the past, not to help Silver stop Iblis from destroying the world, but to break Iblis's seal so that Mephiles and Iblis can reform into Solaris and consume all of time and existence.
* ObviouslyEvil: He introduces himself as [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Mephiles the Dark]]. When asked about himself, he falls silent and changes the subject. He ''looks'' like an evil twin of Shadow the Hedgehog (who himself already looks like an evil twin of Sonic the Hedgehog). It's almost mind-boggling that Silver didn't realize Mephiles was a bad guy the very first time they met. He moves like a puppet, has soulless, feral eyes, and [[NoMouth NO MOUTH]] (yet his face [[UncannyValley moves when he talks]]). And that's when he is a Shadow doppelganger, to say nothing of his powered up form, which is crystal-like, emits blue flames, and has red scleras with [[SicklyGreenGlow green glowing]] cat irises. * TheSociopath: The universe is just a stress toy to him. And he'll play with it until it breaks.
* StoryBreakerPower: He can TimeTravel to any point in time at will, can transport anyone through any point in time, and can apparently summon all seven Chaos Emeralds to his side. It's a wonder as to why the plot doesn't end in seconds because of this.
* StrawNihilist: He asks Shadow why he continues to fight and attempt to protect humanity when they'll only persecute him later on.
* TimeTravel: Seems to be one of his main abilities. He can banish others to other time periods as well. This unfortunately leads to one of many narrative confusion (see ComplexityAddiction above).
* TurnsRed: [[spoiler:During the fight as Solaris, he attacks more frequently and increases the number of laser beams he fires.]]
* UnexplainedRecovery: Despite being [[spoiler:[[RetGone erased from time]]]], he reappeared in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'' as a playable character.
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: He's a truly mean, malicious, manipulative, and dark villain, making him especially stand out in the normally bright ''Sonic'' franchise. [[spoiler:The whole "assassinating Sonic" bit adds onto it as well.]]
* VillainsNeverLie: Technically, he wasn't actually lying when he told Silver that Sonic was the Iblis Trigger. All he does is omit the fact that ''killing'' Sonic is what makes him the Iblis Trigger.
* WeCanRuleTogether: He tries to pull this in Shadow's story twice, offering him a place at his side in order to get even with humanity before they have the chance to betray him. Ironically, ''he'' has a pretty good reason to hate Shadow, so he probably intended to kill him after he was no longer useful. of the god of [[SpaceTimeEater destroying time and light, Solaris.space]], [[RealityWarper as well as altering time and space in various ways.]] Time Eater starts destroying history and [[TakenForGranite petrifies]] Sonic's friends during Sonic's birthday, making Sonic team up with his past self to stop the Time Eater in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.

[[spoiler:Time Eater is technically an EldritchAbomination, but also a HumongousMecha, transformed into such by the VillainTeamUp of Doctor Eggman and his past self. Both Eggmen control the Time Eater to erase their previous defeats at Sonic's hands.

* AttackItsWeakPoint: Its consciousness, represented by a fiery orb, is its main weak point.

* BeamSpam: Loves firing lots of laser beams, especially once it TurnsRed. Oh, and these lasers are strong enough to injure Super Sonic, Super Shadow, and Super Silver.
* EldritchAbomination: It is a godlike monstrosity that can destroy timelines and dimensions at a whim.
* EvilIsNotAToy: The Duke of Soleanna seriously thought kidnapping a god and treating it like a lab rat was a good idea? Whether or not Solaris was always malevolent is [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation up for debate]], but it (or, rather, [[spoiler:Mephiles]]) certainly was after this, if not having been stuck in solitary confinement for ten years straight!

* LightIsNotGood: A being of heavenly light who is capable of destroying time itself.
* MadGod: Though like Chaos, it's more due to rage than outright insanity.
* MotifMerger: Mephiles has a sinister-sounding piano {{Leitmotif}} (with a techno remix as his boss fight music). Iblis is accompanied by a bombastic, orchestral score. * RetGone: [[spoiler:After being defeated, Elise blows out the Flames of Disaster, thereby erasing Solaris from existence.]]
* ShowsDamage: Solaris' first form's stony body flakes off when taking damage.
* SpacetimeEater: Easily capable of devouring entire dimensions and timelines.

The evil genie of the lamp who wants to erase the Arabian Nights.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: In the original story of ''Aladdin and the Magic Lamp'', the Genie of the lamp may not have been as lovable as [[WesternAnimation/{{Aladdin}} the Disney version]], but he was certainly not this malicious.
* AintTooProudToBeg: [[spoiler:He's reduced to begging Shahra to help him when he's being forcibly sealed into his lamp.]]
* AGodAmI: In his OneWingedAngel mode.
--> ''"I am... the Creator... The stories of this world are... '''mine!'''"''
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler:Before his death in the lava.]]
* BadassCape: He takes it off when he fights Sonic.
* BigBad: Of ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheSecretRings''.
* BigWhy: [[spoiler:His final word, right before being sucked into his lamp.]]
* BewareMyStingerTail: As Alf-Wayla-La-Wayla, his sword has now become his tail.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: Black sclerae with red pupils to be exact.
* BodyHorror: [[spoiler:His transformation was both unsettling and painful, to say the least.]]
* TheBusCameBack: Returned as a "buddy" character in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners''. He (or rather, several voiceless clones of him) also appeared as a minor ArcVillain during an event in the same game.
* ClippedWingAngel: [[spoiler:His transformation is actually incomplete. Because he got the wrong sacrifice, he wasn't able to absorb all seven World Rings.]]
* CoolSword: One that resembles a cross between a scimitar and a straight-edge razor.
* DeathByIrony: Used a Flame of Judgement curse on Sonic to force him to retrieve the Sacred Rings. Guess how he dies?
* DomesticAbuser: Heavily implied to be this to Shahra. His WeCanRuleTogether offer to her sounds like something an abusive boyfriend would say and his VillainousBreakdown sounds like an abusive boyfriend trying to get his girlfriend back on his side.
* DuelBoss: Despite being an all-powerful genie whose power is described by King Solomon as "godlike", when it's time for the final battle with Sonic, [[LetsFightLikeGentlemen he doesn't fight him with anything but]] [[WeaponOfChoice his sword]].
* EvilIsHammy: Oh boy, is it ever.
* EldritchAbomination: In his true form.
* {{Expy}}: An evil Djinn that seeks to conquer the world? He'd fit right in in the ''Film/{{Wishmaster}}'' series. He also looks a lot like ''Anime/DragonBallZ''[='=]s Majin Buu.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler:Baked in lava.]]
* JackassGenie: Oh ''yeah''.
* OneWingedAngel: Alf-Layla-wa-Layla.
* RealMenWearPink: Has pink skin.
Whyyyyy?!]]
* VillainOfTheWeek: Another one-shot villain who is the threat of a ''Sonic'' game instead of Eggman (who appears by proxy of King Shahryar, but isn't the villain at all).

Born at the beginning of time, this massive monster is the incarnation of night, darkness, and destruction. Sealed within the Earth for millions of years, Dark Gaia was woken up by Dr. Eggman as part of a scheme to dominate the world.
----
* AlienBlood: Bright green.
* AsteroidsMonster: The dark creatures that plague the world at night?
* FinalBoss: Of ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed''.
* TimeAbyss: Has been around since the beginning of time.
* ThroatLight: As Dark Gaia.
* WaveMotionGun: Perfect Dark Gaia unleashes a giant laser beam from its eye in the [=PS3=]/360 version.

[[folder:Merlina the Wizard]]
[[quoteright:145:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/merlina_sonic.png]]

--> ''"You could never understand my sorrow at seeing the ruinous future of this kingdom."''

-> '''Debut''': ''[[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries Sonic and the Black Knight]]''
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/MamikoNoto (Japanese), Creator/MelissaHutchison (English)

A young sorceress from the world of ancient Camelot. She summons Sonic to her world to help stop King Arthur from terrorizing her kingdom. However, she has other intentions...
----
* AntiVillain: What seperates her from the other ''Sonic'' villains is that she is driven by purely altruistic motives. Merlina wants to make her world never end, by making it never change, so it won't end in warfare.
* BatmanGambit: Her plan was to trick Sonic into defeating King Arthur so she could take the scabbard of Excalibur and use its immortality-granting powers to make the kingdom everlasting.
* BigBad: Of ''Sonic and the Black Knight''.
* BigBadFriend: Merlina seems to be Sonic's ally early on, [[spoiler:but is using him for her own means]].
* CastingAShadow: As the Dark Queen.
* TheChessmaster: Masterminded the plot of ''Sonic and the Black Knight''.
* CompleteImmortality: She uses the Scabbard of Excalibur to grant this to her kingdom.
* CurbStompBattle: This is the ''nicest'' way you can describe her first fight with Sonic. No matter how hard he tries, he can't land a hit on her thanks to her barrier. Then she snaps Caliburn in half and basically beats the everloving snot out of him. If Sonic had not gotten his HeroicSecondWind, she would've killed him.
* DarkActionGirl: [[PlayingWithATrope Played with]]: she's an antagonist and the FinalBoss, but is an {{Anti Villain}}ess.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Sonic manages to make her do a HeelFaceTurn by telling her to live each day to the fullest and cherish the time she and her kingdom have left.
* DualWielding: Uses twin swords and twin [[MagicStaff Magic Staffs]] as the Dark Queen.
* EnergyBall: Ultilizes these in her fight with Sonic.
%%* EvilBrit: Define "evil".
%%* EvilRedhead: Again, she's not evil.
%%* EvilSorceror: Er... see the above two.
* ExpositionFairy: For the beginning of the game, until Caliburn takes over.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: Has a red eye on her chest as the Dark Queen.
* FakeBrit: She is voiced by Creator/MelissaHutchison, who is American.
* FemalesAreMoreInnocent: One of the few female villains in a ''Sonic'' game that is the BigBad of her game, and is an {{Anti Villain}}ess WellIntentionedExtremist. Compare her to the other male villains on this page.
* FinalBoss: Of ''Sonic and the Black Knight''.
* FinalBossNewDimension: The fight with her takes place in a black void, much like the battle with Alf-Layla-Wa-Layla in ''Sonic and the Secret Rings''.
* FusionDance: Can do this with her shadow as the Dark Queen.
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: As the Dark Queen.
* ImageSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ua2XQlUTtTM With Me]]
* ImmortalityImmorality: While she's a WellIntentionedExtremist, she's using BlackMagic to spread darkness in order to make Camelot eternal. Sonic makes the argument that [[WhoWantsToLiveForever that a world that goes on forever is no good]], while Caliburn asks her if she truly believes that such a world would even function properly.
* LivingShadow: Has one that can manifest in the shape of King Arthur which she can control at will. She can also fuse with it to go OneWingedAngel.
%%* MagicStaff
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: Her shadow can grow multiple arms to attack enemies.
* OneWingedAngel: See FusionDance.
* SomeKindOfForceField: Uses one to defend against Sonic during her boss fight and in the fight before that.
* TheStoic: Always maintains a calm demeanor. Justified in that, in her view, she's doing what needs to be done to save her kingdom. Her emotional investment in this isn't much.
* StrawNihilist: She's a more sympathetic example than most. Merlina loves her world, but upon discovering that her world is doomed to end in ruin and warfare, became depressed and occasionally wondered why they should accomplish anything. Her solution was to try to find a way to make her world eternal.
-->'''Merlina''': Why do flowers bloom knowing they are destined to wither? Their time of beauty is so short-lived.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: As the Dark Queen.
* TurnsRed: More like turns black. As her health dwindles, her color scheme turns from blue to black.
* VillainOfTheWeek: A rare case where a new villain appears in place of Eggman, who is completely absent from the game.
* WalkingSpoiler: She's really the BigBad throughout the entire game, despite her benevolent actions at first.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Merlina wants to save her world... by stopping it from ever changing.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Her hair turns purple when she becomes the Dark Queen.

[[folder:Time Eater]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/time_eater.png]]
->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''

An EldritchAbomination capable of [[SpaceTimeEater destroying time and space]], [[RealityWarper as well as altering time and space in various ways.]] Time Eater starts destroying history and [[TakenForGranite petrifies]] Sonic's friends during Sonic's birthday, making Sonic team up with his past self to stop the Time Eater in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.

[[spoiler:Time Eater is technically an EldritchAbomination, but also a HumongousMecha, transformed into such by the VillainTeamUp of Doctor Eggman and his past self. Both Eggmen control the Time Eater to erase their previous defeats at Sonic's hands.]]
----
* AndIMustScream: Does this to Sonic's friends, as they are TakenForGranite due to it, but implied to still be aware, judging by what Tails says upon his rescue.
-->'''Tails''': I thought I was dead! Floating without a body in a black limbo... *shivers* I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: "Charge into the core!"
* BigBad: Of ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope except]] it is revealed that [[HijackedByGanon Dr. Eggman and his past self]] are controlling it]].
* CastingAShadow: Can fire dark energy blasts that immobilize opponents.
* ClockworkCreature: The Time Eater is basically a mass of purple smoke with clock gears sticking out of it.
* DetachmentCombat: Its Warping Arm Attack sends its arms through time holes to attack unsuspecting opponents.
* EldritchAbomination: It is far more monstrous than any other creature ever battled by Sonic and has a bizarre set of powers, including the ability to tear through space-time itself. By the end of the game, it's still uncertain what the Time Eater even is or where it came from.
%%* FangsAreEvil
* FinalBossNewDimension: Sonic and his past self fight the Time Eater [[spoiler:and both Eggmen]] in the Center of Time, where pieces of various stages featured throughout ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' float around.
* FrickinLaserBeams: Can fire small green laser beams in the 3DS version, as well as a large laser from its mouth in both versions.
* GetBackHereBoss: The fight with it in the console version mainly consists of the two Sonics chasing it through the center of time. Only Modern Sonic has to do so in the 3DS version, as Classic merely has to dodge its attacks until the core is exposed.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Its perfected form has cybernetic wings.
* HomingProjectile: Its main attack is this, which gets announced ''ad nauseum'' by your teammates.
--> "That looks like a Homing Shot!"
* HumongousMecha: [[spoiler:Turned into this so Dr. Eggman and his past self can control it to erase their past defeats at Sonic's hands.]]
* {{Leitmotif}}: Has two versions, in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EkbV8VW3-4 Modern]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XOJ8BrsK6s Classic]].
* LivingShadow: Its initial appearance invokes this trope. As the plot progresses, its form takes shape and gets progressively more mechanical [[spoiler:as a result of the Eggmen modifying it to fit their own ends]].
* ManBitesMan: Time Eater in the 3DS version will not hesitate to chomp on Modern Sonic after he manages to dodge all its other attacks.
* MultiArmedAndDangerous: The creature's final form has four arms, but only in the Console version. The 3DS one has a simplified design to comply with the handheld's limitations.
* PlayingWithFire: Its final, strongest attack in the console version is a massive fireball.
* PowerFloats: Justified in that it doesn't have legs.
* RealityWarper: Done through destroying time and space. [[spoiler:Eggman intends to exploit the creature's ability to damage the fabric of reality to erase his past failures and improve on his chances to defeat Sonic]].
* SuperStrength: Able to easily knock out Sonic and his past self and nearly crush them, while holding back, with one arm. [[spoiler:Fortunately, Sonic's friends cheering on both of them allows them to get up and defeat the Time Eater.]]
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Shares multiple characteristics with Solaris from ''Sonic 06''. [[WordOfDante Ian Flynn noticed this]], and wondered if the Time Eater is what remains of Solaris after the ResetButton. So far, Sega hasn't given an answer.
* SpaceTimeEater: Its name is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. By devouring the space-time continuum, the Time Eater damages the fabric of reality, leaving only the White Space.
* TakenForGranite: The Time Eater kidnaps Sonic's friends and [[TimeStandsStill freezes time for them]], turning them into blank statues in the White Space.
* TimeMaster: Can manipulate time and space, either by slowing down the flow of time or erasing pieces of the timeline.
* TheVoiceless: It does grunt and growl sometimes, but is incapable of speech.

[[caption-width-right:350:[[labelnote:Click here to see him without his mask]]\\

-->''You may call me... Infinite... in the brief moments that remain to you.''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicForces''
->'''Voiced by''': Creator/TakashiKondo (Japanese), Creator/LiamOBrien (English)

A mysterious villain who joins Eggman's bid for world conquest. Originally a self-styled "Ultimate Mercenary" jackal hired by Eggman and leader of his own "Jackal Squad," a crushing defeat by Shadow led him to start wearing a mask and pursue power even greater than Shadow's Chaos abilities — which he believes he has now thanks to Eggman's Phantom Ruby.
----
* AchillesHeel:
** [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's illusions are powerful, but they can be countered by someone who has a Phantom Ruby as well, and being in close proximity to a Phantom Ruby weakens his own. The Avatar manages to find a Phantom Ruby prototype left behind by Infinite, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
** Infinite's character bears one perhaps even more noteworthy than the rare possibility of [[spoiler:a second Phantom Ruby nullifying his powers]]: namely, [[{{Sadist}} his hopeless addiction to sadism]]. Infinite isn't interested in pragmatism; [[TheBully his personal agenda is domination]], to relish in the fear, suffering, and subjugation of others as much as possible, constantly playing it off as it "not being worth the time" to finish off the enemy. Even after Eggman calls him out on letting Sonic live when he had him cornered, ''the one person who could absolutely ruin everything'', Infinite tries to rationalize it away. [[spoiler:Even beyond that, [[CreateYourOwnHero Infinite failed to recognize what he'd inadvertently created when he subjected the Avatar to the same experience that led to]] ''[[CreateYourOwnHero him]]'' [[CreateYourOwnHero becoming so powerful]].]]
** [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby can't function without an external power supply of some sort. If all power supplies are destroyed, Infinite would no longer have access to his greatest weapon and be substantially weakened. This one isn't fully exploited, as Eggman had a backup power supply when the primary one, the Death Egg, was destroyed.]]
* AdjustingYourGlasses: Performs the "by the bridge" method to his mask.
* AlwaysSecondBest:
** [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was this to Shadow. He was the captain of a mercenary squad and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary" until he was dealt a crushing defeat at the hands of the UltimateLifeForm. The humiliation drove Infinite to seek power so he'll never be weak again.]]
** His seeming mastery of his powers [[spoiler:granted by the Phantom Ruby]] makes it appear as though he's the only one who could use them. [[spoiler:However, the prequel comics reveal that Eggman was the Ruby's original wielder — however brief — and he could utilize it with far greater ease, and when he takes it back at the game's climax, he immediately demonstrates a greater level of power in projections than Infinite ever had.]]
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He has Sonic's number in hand-to-hand combat, able to defeat him effortlessly. Of course, as the game progresses, Sonic eventually returns the favor.
* AmbiguousSituation:
** [[spoiler:The game reveals that the gem embedded into his chest is the Phantom Ruby, or rather, the finalized version of a prototype Phantom Ruby created by Eggman. What happened to the original and ''how'' Infinite is connected to said Ruby remains unknown... Unless you play Episode Shadow, wherein you learn that Infinite was the leader of the Jackal Squad Eggman hired to protect his base in Mystic Jungle, where the ''real'' Phantom Ruby was being analyzed.]]
** [[spoiler:It's also left vague on whether the Phantom Ruby's abilities are just illusions, outright reality warping, or a mix of the two. While the villains are revealed to be virtual reality constructs and the obstacles that appear during his boss fights are illusions manifested by the Ruby's power, Infinite's energy attacks and the Phantom Ruby's ability to distort gravity and create Null Space implies that there's more to the Ruby's power than what has been told.]]
* AnimalStereotypes: He's a black-furred jackal who started off as a thief and later grew to be a menacing villain, a common stereotype of jackals.
* ApocalypseHow: [[spoiler:He nearly pulls off a Class 6 when he tries to erase the resistance by dropping a construct of the sun onto them.]]
* ArchEnemy:
** Can be seen as one to the Avatar. [[spoiler:The Avatar's fellow soldiers were killed by Infinite, and since then, they have developed a fear of him, something Infinite uses to torment them. [[CharacterDevelopment However, some encouragement from Sonic helps the Avatar to conquer their fear of him]] and [[TookALevelInBadass help Sonic take him down for good]].]]
** [[spoiler:Infinite views Shadow as one, considering he's the reason Infinite sought to become who he is today. After Infinite accepts that Shadow [[ButForMeItWasTuesday has no reason to remember him]], but also proves in his mind that he has become more powerful than Shadow by toying with him in an illusory world, Infinite moves past this as well.]]
* ArtificialPerson: Infinite is shown to be this in the opening, as Eggman's latest and most powerful experiment, [[spoiler:though he most certainly wasn't always]].
* AssholeVictim: [[spoiler:Shadow was cruel to him and his team... but they'd already put their lot in with Eggman to help take over the world and get power at that point.]]
* AttackDrones: His red energy cubes serve as these for him, as his main fighting style is to send his cubes to attack opponents, arranging them in various shapes and formations.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: He's TheLeader of the Eggman Army, and by far and away its most powerful member.
* AxCrazy: [[MaskOfSanity He hides it well]], but it's pretty clear that Infinite is quite unhinged underneath it all, as he relishes in causing death and destruction. [[spoiler:In the final issue of the tie-in comic, when Infinite strikes the Phantom Ruby with his sword, he's shown what he desires most: a desolate, destroyed world, implying that he was crazy even ''before'' he gained the Ruby's power.]]
* BadassArmfold: His default pose.
* BadassBaritone: Has a deep, commanding, echoing voice thanks to Creator/LiamOBrien voicing him, and is clearly one of the powerhouses of Eggman's army.
* BadassInCharge: Leads the Eggman Army in ''Sonic Forces'' and more than capable of [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyI kicking you]] [[CurbStompBattle all around]].
* BadassNormal: [[spoiler:The final tie-in comic shows that before he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby, he was a highly skilled mercenary captain. He managed to fight his way through hundreds of Eggman's robots and came within a hairsbreadth of actually ''killing'' the good doctor, only failing due to the Phantom Ruby's interference.]]
* BattleAura: Gains one when using his powers, but how it looks depends on the version. In the [=PS4=]/XBOX One version, he glows with a red aura and is surrounded by a purple haze that occasionally flickers with red, glitching static. In the Switch version, he has a simple red outline. In the comics, his aura resembles crimson flames.
* BerserkButton: He does not like being called "weak" very much.
* BraggingThemeTune: His theme is essentially just bragging about how dangerous and awesome he is.
* BreakTheHaughty: [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team called Jackal Squad, and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and lead to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* BringIt: Makes this gesture to Sonic at the beginning of their final battle, right before growing to giant size.
* BondVillainStupidity: In his second fight with Sonic, despite still being more powerful than him, Infinite decides against killing him, deeming him [[NotWorthKilling not worth the effort]]. Eggman [[WhatWereYouThinking utterly blasts him for this]], and indeed, it comes back to haunt him later as Sonic eventually becomes strong enough to defeat him.
* BossRemix: An instrumental version of his theme song plays during the first two boss fights with him.
* TheBully: When you get right down to it, at his core, Infinite is nothing but a superpowered bully who enjoys flaunting his power and superiority over others. He constantly insults Sonic and his allies, hovers above his opponents so he can literally look down on them, and shows no respect for anyone. [[spoiler:His backstory in Episode Shadow reveals that the reason he became Infinite in the first place was that he was handed a humiliating defeat by Shadow and wanted power so he'll never be weak again, much like how real-life bullies are often motivated by a need to feel powerful.]]
* CharacterTic: His mask appears to be very loose-fitting, as he has to frequently adjust it.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:During his fight with Silver, Infinite drops one of the Phantom Ruby prototypes he was supposed to destroy. The Avatar would later find that same prototype, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
* ClassicVillain: He has a distinctly evil appearance, acts as an EvilCounterpart to the avatar, and commits nearly ''all'' of the SevenDeadlySins:
** Wrath: Slaughters innocents with no remorse, just to assert dominance over them.
** Pride: Considers himself the greatest and most powerful being alive.
** Sloth: Relies almost entirely on the Phantom Ruby (See UnskilledButStrong below)
** Greed: Thirsts for power.
** Envy: Despises Shadow for beating him easily and calling him "weak".
* ColdHam: Despite his calm demeanor and subdued voice, practically every line of dialog that comes out of him is an over the top BadassBoast.
* ColonyDrop: [[spoiler:Eggman and Infinite's plan to destroy the Resistance? Use the Phantom Ruby to create a virtual reality construct of the Sun and drop it on them.]]
* ColourCodedTimestop: While not exactly a time-stop, his teleportation produces the same effect as the Phantom Ruby. [[spoiler:This is not a coincidence.]]
* CoolSword: The final issue tie-in comic for ''Sonic Forces'' shows that Infinite's WeaponOfChoice [[spoiler:before gaining the power of the Phantom Ruby]] was a red sword curved like a scimitar.
* CreateYourOwnHero: [[spoiler:Infinite himself would inevitability create someone who would oppose him — the future Rookie of the Resistance, who would go on to be the key player in stopping Infinite once and for all.]]
* CreateYourOwnVillain: [[spoiler:He was hired by Eggman to protect the facility the Phantom Ruby was being studied in — then Shadow rolled around and mercilessly crushed him. Infinite was so taken by terror and humiliation that he more or less sold his soul for the sake of power, giving himself over to Eggman to become the Ruby's testing grounds.]]
* CunningLikeAFox: His mask is modeled after a fox's head and he has a bushy tail like a fox, [[spoiler:even though he's actually a jackal]].
* CurbStompBattle: He's an undisputed master of this.
** [[spoiler:An unmasked Infinite is on the receiving end of this to Shadow in Eggman's Facility in Mystic Jungle, which would lead to his StartOfDarkness and him becoming Infinite.]]
** In Issue Three of the ''Sonic Forces'' prequel comic, ''Looming Shadow'', Eggman dispatches Infinite to deal with Omega when he rampages through his Arsenal Pyramid as a test of his abilities. It's not a spoiler to say he won decisively.
** His first meeting with Sonic has him and the other villains dealing out a ''brutal'' one to Sonic, with Infinite in particular not even using his hands. The Blue Blur is unable to fight back at all and is soundly defeated.
** [[spoiler:A flashback shows him dealing out one to the Avatar and his team, frightening the Avatar so much [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere that they ran away in fear]].]]
** In Mystic Jungle, Silver tries to hold his own against Infinite. Key word is ''tries''. It ended as well as you'd expect, and Silver would've been killed had Sonic not stepped in.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: All those energy attacks Infinite uses? You won't see them in his boss fights. [[spoiler:Possibly justified by his need to prove himself stronger, and thus holding back.]]
* {{Cyborg}}: The heroes believe he was built by Eggman, but in actuality he seems to be this. If nothing else, he has [[spoiler:Eggman's perfected artificial]] Phantom Ruby embedded in his chest and some sort of upgrades that increased his physical abilities.
* DarkIsEvil: He's one of the villains and his predominant colors are black and white, with hints of red here and there. When his aura is active, his entire body, sans the gem on his chest, turns black.
* DarthVaderClone: He's got a scary mask with a voice to match, black coloration, powers that prominently include the color red, once wielded a red sword in the prequel comic, and is Eggman's most prominent [[TheDragon second-in-command]] in ''Forces''.
* DashAttack: One of his attacks during the Avatar's boss fight with him has him dashing at the player like a rocket, similarly to Sonic's Homing Attack.
* DealWithTheDevil: ''Issue Four: Rise of Infinite'' reveals exactly who Infinite once was: [[spoiler:he was the leader of a band of thieves before Eggman offered him and his band the chance to work for him, having been given a glimpse of Infinite's own secret desires and tempted him with the chance to see them realized.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the {{Sadist}} and DarkerAndEdgier archetypes. Infinite is extremely dangerous, but his constant need to relish in the pain and suffering of others screws him and Eggman over on several occasions, such as letting Sonic live when he could have easily finished him off, or [[spoiler:killing the Avatar's squadmates, an act that would inspire the Avatar to become stronger and ultimately be the one to foil Eggman's plan to incinerate the Resistance with a virtual sun. His motives also turn out to be due to him being little more than TheBully, reveling in pain to support his own wrecked confidence after Shadow [[CurbStompBattle handily beat him]]]].
* TheDragon: Is Eggman's right-hand man in ''Forces''. The fourth comic that was released alongside the game reveals [[spoiler:that Infinite's squad was raiding Eggman's base to make quick cash. Eggman offers Infinite the chance to help take over the world]].
* DragonInChief: Eggman ''probably'' couldn't have defeated Sonic and taken over most of the world without him. [[spoiler:Though Infinite would be absolutely nothing more than a sellsword without Eggman giving him the power of the Phantom Ruby, so it really all evens out. Ultimately, in spite of Infinite's impudence towards Eggman heavily implying a betrayal, it is the doctor that ultimately dismisses him and takes the Phantom Ruby for himself after he fails too many times.]]
* TheDreaded:
** To the Resistance. Infinite defeating Sonic gave him quite a fearsome reputation, and Knuckles states that most soldiers that see him flee in terror.
** To the Avatar. [[spoiler:The Avatar's fellow soldiers were killed by Infinite, and since then, they have developed a fear of him, something Infinite uses to torment them. [[CharacterDevelopment However, some encouragement from Sonic helps the Avatar conquer their fear of him]] and [[TookALevelInBadass help Sonic take him down for good]].]]
* DrivenByEnvy: [[spoiler:Everything he is today is a desperate attempt to one-up Shadow.]]
* DrivenToMadness: [[spoiler:Overlapping a bit with GoMadFromTheRevelation, when Infinite tries to avenge his squad's destruction at Shadow's hands, Shadow delivers an absolutely '''''brutal''''' NoHoldsBarredBeatdown, mocking him as he lies broken and trembling at Shadow's feet. The sheer terror this instilled in the mercenary positively ''broke'' him, and he became obsessed with obtaining power so that he would never be driven to that point again. Though it should be noted the vision he was given by the Phantom Ruby (a wrecked, desolate world) and that he completely willingly signed up with Eggman to take over the world implies he was somewhat insane to begin with and Shadow just made him more overtly so.]]
* DrunkOnTheDarkSide: It's pretty clear he's drunk with power and ''loves'' lording it over everyone else and abusing it to no end. Though slightly unusually for this trope, he's more of a ColdHam. Unfortunately for him, he's so caught up in his own power and believed superiority that he makes serious mistakes that screw him and Eggman over on multiple occasions.
* EvilCounterpart: Episode Shadow pretty much makes him one to the Avatar. [[spoiler:Both of them had their entire squads destroyed by a powerful enemy and were belittled and mocked, leading them to vow to become stronger. However, the Avatar wants to be stronger to protect the world and his/her friends, while Infinite seeks power for his own sake.]]
* EvilGloating: '''Constantly'''. Infinite just ''loves'' to talk on and on about how invincible he is to all his opponents. And, yes, while he can back it up, this trait likewise showcases how much his power blinds him to the potential danger that leaving his opponents alive poses in the moments they ''do'' overcome his power. By the time Sonic faces him for the third and final time, he indirectly tells him YouTalkTooMuch in their banter.
* EvilerThanThou: Asserts that he sees himself as this compared to Eggman. [[spoiler:Eggman later reveals he had no intention of Infinite being his end goal and already had a replacement prepared from square one in the form of his final mecha. When Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman disposes of him and takes his place without a second thought.]]
* EvilIsPetty: His motivation for wanting to destroy the world and seek power? [[spoiler:[[DisproportionateRetribution Because Shadow defeated him and called him weak.]]]] There's also a part of ForTheEvulz in that as well due to his [[{{Sadist}} sadism]].
* EvilLaugh: Will do this occasionally, such as when you die during the boss fights with him.
* EvilTastesGood: Tying in with his sadism. During his first meeting with the Avatar, he reflects that he can "taste" his fear, anxiety, and doubt, and finds it "delicious."
* EvilSoundsDeep: Has a deep, scary voice that contains a noticeable [[PowerEchoes echo effect]], though that's likely due to the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby, as his voice before he had his mask was less intimidating, but still pretty deep]].
* EvilWearsBlack: Wears black gloves and boots and is one of the villains.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: The mask and Phantom Ruby give him a golden pupil with red sclera. When not wearing the mask, he has a blue eye and a yellow eye.
* ExtremityExtremist: In his first battle with Sonic, he manages to defeat him without even using his hands (save for using his energy blasts), literally kicking him around like a big blue ball.
* FacialHorror: He has a patch of fur over his right eye that makes it look like he has a scar.
* FailedASpotCheck: [[spoiler:He dropped one of the Ruby prototypes and didn't notice it and the Avatar dropping that same Ruby later and Infinite not even seeing it right in the Avatar's hand.]]
* FatalFlaw:
** {{Pride}}. Infinite is undeniably powerful and dangerous, but he's so caught up in his own power and superiority that he never considers the possibility that he ''can lose''. This pride causes him to make some careless errors, such as [[BondVillainStupidity letting Sonic live]] [[WhyDontYouJustShootHim when he could've easily finished him off]]. This is partly what makes his boss fights so satisfying, as you get to show Infinite the hard way that he's [[NotSoInvincibleAfterAll not as invincible as he thinks.]]
** His InferioritySuperiorityComplex also lends itself to this; [[spoiler:his [[{{Sadist}} sadism]] is largely about proving to himself he's stronger than anyone else, and as noted, his desire to draw out the pain backfires on him more than once.]]
* AFatherToHisMen: Implied. Quite possibly his ''only'' redeemable aspect was that he was did care about his Jackal Squad, being furious at Shadow after he took them all down. Though it’s worth noting that this is before he became Infinite.
* FlashStep: He's quick enough to perform these.
* {{Flight}}: He's capable of flying. [[spoiler:Mostly because of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* FlunkyBoss: After damaging him enough during the Avatar's boss fight with him, Infinite will summon Eggman's robots to assist him.
* {{Foil}}: Can be seen as one to Metal Sonic. Both are Eggman's most powerful creations and both of them have massive [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex inferiority complexes]] against one of the main characters. But Metal Sonic is a robot designed to resemble Sonic, while Infinite [[spoiler:was an ordinary Jackal who is empowered by the Phantom Ruby]]. Also, while Metal Sonic has double-crossed the doctor on more than one occasion, Infinite remains loyal to Eggman to the end.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Infinite wasn't born with his powers, back then he was just [[spoiler:a jackal. Episode Shadow reveals that he was once a mercenary who joined Eggman after taking his offer to help take over the world and was assigned to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at Shadow's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
* HateSink: While he wasn't this [[spoiler:when he was a BadassNormal]], it ends up being what he is by the events of the game. A PsychopathicManchild with a constant {{Sadist}} streak, he may appear to be a badass, but by the end, it's clear that he's nothing but [[TheBully a bully.]] [[spoiler:He's not even competent enough to keep the fight up, removing what may have been his only redeeming quality: his [[EvilIsCool cool factor.]]]]
* HandBlast: He is able to fire [[FrickinLaserBeams laser beams]] and {{Energy Ball}}s from his hands.
* TheHeavy: He takes leadership of Eggman's army in ''Sonic Forces''.
* HeroKiller: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] in that the only people he actually kills are [[spoiler:the Avatar's teammates]], but he effortlessly defeats other powerful characters such as Sonic, Silver, and Omega.
* HiredGuns: He was a mercenary before [[spoiler:[[BerserkButton Shadow]] [[CurbStompBattle inspired]] [[FaceHeelTurn him]] to become more powerful.]]
* HopeCrusher: Infinite thrives on driving his opponents to despair with his immense power. As he tells Silver:
-->'''Infinite:''' This wasn't part of my agenda, but I'm always happy to crush a hero. It keeps the rabble in line. Shows them that there is no hope.
* HumanoidAbomination: He appears to be the same kind of FunnyAnimal species as the main cast, but his design incorporates traits from different animal species, he possesses powers beyond anything seen so far, and Tails is unable to make sense of the readings he gives out on the Miles Electric. [[spoiler:He's really a FunnyAnimal (a jackal, specifically) like everyone else, but powered up by the Phantom Ruby.]]
* ICanStillFight: [[spoiler:His final words before he disappears.]]
* IHaveTheHighGround: Infinite is fond of hovering high above the heroes as a display of his power and superiority.
* ImageSong: Aptly titled "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKjOJuPjiu4 Infinite]]".
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: The Phantom Ruby allows him to conjure up anything he feels like to attack Sonic and the others with, ranging from lasers to cannons to [[spoiler:an outright ColonyDrop using a localized burning star that fills the sky]], the requirement being that they have to come in contact with the Phantom Ruby's red cubes or be in close enough physical proximity to Infinite. [[spoiler:They're actually just illusions, but they will still be injured or killed as if the illusions were real.]]
* ImmuneToFlinching: PlayedWith during his boss fights. If struck by Sonic's Homing Attack or the Avatar's Wire Attack, he'll recoil from the impact. But if struck by the Avatar's Wispon attacks, he won't react outside of grunts of pain.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Heavily implied to have one. [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that prior to the game, he was the captain of a mercenary team and touted himself as the "Ultimate Mercenary". That all changed one fateful day when he and his squad were hired by Eggman to protect one of his laboratories in Mystic Jungle, where they encountered Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow effortlessly destroyed his entire squad and handed Infinite a humiliating defeat, which would lead to Infinite's vow to become stronger and led to him obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby.]] This is why he constantly boasts about his power: to make himself feel strong. This is also why he objects to Eggman's strategy to retreat after [[spoiler:the Death Egg is destroyed]]. To him, retreat is a sign of weakness.
* {{Infinite}}: It's his name. ''Duh.'' Fittingly enough, Hoobastank sings the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI97jY3FZ9Q main theme]] of ''Sonic Forces'', and their name is often stylized as h∞bastank, also containing an Infinite symbol. He also has the infinity symbol decorated on the soles of his boots.
* InformedSpecies: [[spoiler:He's a jackal, despite looking ''very'' little like one.]]
* InterfaceScrew: Throughout the Capital City stage, Infinite will occasionally pop in and use the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby]] to [[GravityScrew screw with the gravity]].
* IWorkAlone: Espouses this sentiment during the final battle with him. [[spoiler:Having his entire squadron wiped out by Shadow likely inspired a desire to never again rely on others.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' Friends are nothing but a fleeting illusion. You can count on nobody but yourself.
* KnightOfCerebus:
** While ''Sonic Forces'' is one of the darker ''Sonic'' games to date, it still has some lighthearted scenes at times. Any scene involving Infinite, however, is utterly devoid of humor or levity. Notably, he is one of the few ''Sonic'' villains to be explicitly seen killing people onscreen.
** This is best shown in Stage 16, Capital City. Knuckles, learning that Eggman's army is undermanned in his home base in Metropolis, decides to order a full-scale assault on the city. Things quickly go to hell when Infinite arrives and, at the doctor's command, [[spoiler:activates the Phantom Ruby's power to create giant, grotesque illusions of himself, throwing the Resistance into chaos]]. By the time the stage ends, 80% of the Resistance is utterly annihilated.
* LackOfEmpathy: Infinite only cares for causing as much destruction and suffering as he can. He considers friendship to be a waste.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: He remarks to Eggman that Sonic has beaten him "for decades."
* LiteralMinded: [[spoiler:After Shadow [[CurbStompBattle wrecked his shit]] two months before the start of the game and told him to "never show your pathetic face around me again", Infinite took that to mean he should start wearing a mask.]]
* LivingShadow: He resembles one quite well, especially when his BattleAura is activated, and bears some similarities to [[http://38.media.tumblr.com/e16e8c9de4026ccc9804d1df97b8008b/tumblr_n8thieEJ0J1ta883ho2_r1_500.png Blaze's concept art]].
* LovesTheSoundOfScreaming: After decimating the Avatar's squad, he deliberately allowed them to run away and live for this reason.
-->'''Infinite''': Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live.
* MadnessMantra: ''[[spoiler:I AM NOT WEAK!]]''
* MalevolentMaskedMan: Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head and is one of the main villains of the game.
* MaskOfPower: Whenever he gets ready to attack, the [[GlowingEyesOfDoom right eye on his mask glows red.]]
* MasterOfIllusion: [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's true power. It doesn't actually warp reality, but it [[MindRape mind-rapes]] anyone within range with illusions and hallucinations that seem so real that [[YourMindMakesItReal whatever happens in said hallucinations happens for real]]. In his boss fights, this is done through his energy cubes. Contact with them sends the player into a glitching illusion where they are attacked by objects manifested by the Ruby's power.]]
* MineralMacGuffin: [[spoiler:He has some relation to the mysterious purple gemstone that is referred to as the "Phantom Ruby" by an [[AllThereInTheManual in-game guide]] that everyone was after in ''VideoGame/SonicMania'', implied by the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3BkwugNsS0 sound]] it makes. The game reveals that the Ruby was given to him by Eggman.]]
* MismatchedEyes: [[spoiler:His right pupil is blue and his left pupil is gold.]]
* MyHeroZero: Inverted, he is an antagonist[[note]]some allies of his notwithstanding[[/note]], so he wouldn't be a hero. In [[https://twitter.com/Nakamura_ShunR/status/886230312044199937 earlier drafts]], he is referred to as Zero. ([[OneSteveLimit Not to be confused]] with [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure ZERO]] AKA E-100 Alpha.)
* MysteriousStranger: Infinite is presented as this, during the main story anyway. Sonic never discovers Infinite's backstory during the game. Only Shadow knows what he was before becoming what he is now.
--> '''Sonic''': I don't know anything about you. Not even your name.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:Dropping the prototype Phantom Ruby screws him and Eggman over in the long run.]]
* NoNameGiven: Even before taking the moniker "Infinite", we only know his nickname "The Ultimate Mercenary". His actual name is never revealed.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Used intentionally to give Infinite an otherworldly, alien feel to him. While designed in the same CartoonCreature style as other characters, his design incorporates both foxlike traits as well as the hairstyle used by both hedgehogs and echindas. He also has a red outline around him and is constantly emanating a purple aura that occasionally flickers with red static, as if he's out of sync with the ''Sonic'' universe.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: When confronting the Avatar in Metropolis, he teleports right next to the Avatar, his mask mere inches away from his face, taunting him on whether he'll fight or run away again.
* NotSoDifferent: Presumably the reason he loves tormenting the Avatar: [[spoiler:He lost his squad and was called weak by a much more powerful opponent. It reminded Infinite of himself that day when he takes out the Avatar's squad and calls them "weak". Except now Infinite's the big dog who [[PitifulWorms belittles]] his opponents, much like Shadow.]]
* NotWorthKilling: His initial reaction to Sonic after their second fight, [[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries similar to King Arthur]].
-->'''Infinite:''' As I predicted. You're not even worth the effort to finish off.
* ObviouslyEvil: Let's see: [[EvilWearsBlack Has black fur and clothing?]] Check. [[MalevolentMaskedMan Wears a metallic mask shaped like a fox's head that hides his face]] save for an eye that has a [[SupernaturalGoldEyes gold pupil]] and [[RedEyesTakeWarning red sclera?]] Check. [[PowerGlows Glows with a red outline and emanates a purple haze]] with [[OminousVisualGlitch red glitching static?]] Check. [[TheDragon Is the right-hand man to the main antagonist of the series?]] Check. [[VoiceOfTheLegion Has a demonic, echoing voice?]] Check. [[AxCrazy Openly relishes death and destruction?]] Check. Yep, definitely a bad guy.
* OminousVisualGlitch: His aura occasionally has a glitch-like effect in some spots. The official ''Sonic'' Youtube channel's upload of his theme also has the image glitching out. [[spoiler:His virtual reality constructs have the same glitching effect]]. Just before the final level of the game, [[spoiler:Eggman is able to make him vanish like his constructs by recalling the Phantom Ruby, implying that part or all of his physical form had become a phantom construct.]]
* OmnicidalManiac:
** Infinite and Eggman's plan in ''Sonic Forces'' is to destroy the world and rebuild it from the ashes in their image.
--->'''Infinite:''' We move forward with the plan?\\
'''Eggman:''' Of course! When it's complete, the Resistance will be erased. The world will be nothing but ashes, from which a glorious Eggman Empire will rise!\\
'''Infinite:''' And the Resistance will yield to the [[spoiler:Phantom Ruby's]] power. All will submit.
** [[spoiler:The vision he got from the Phantom Ruby in the prequel comic implies he may have had ambitions of being one of these ''before'' he became what he is now.]]
* OneSteveLimit: One of his names is "Zero" in a draft. He is not to be confused with ZERO AKA E-100 Alpha.
* ParodySue: Has many traits of one of the VillainSue variety. He's portrayed as faster than Sonic, able to curbstomp some of the strongest heroes in the series, forms a LegionOfDoom of some of its strongest villains subservient to him, and spends every other sentence bragging about how powerful he is... [[spoiler:because his one true, definitive power is the ability to make YourMindMakesItReal illusions that make himself appear all-powerful. In actuality, he's nothing more than a [[{{Sadist}} sadistic]] [[TheBully bully]] with more power than he has any right to, and once ways around his power are found, he's not nearly as invincible and perfect as he ''thinks'' he is and his sadism screws his side over royally.]]
* PitifulWorms: Constantly insults and belittles Sonic and the Resistance, referring to them with such terms as "rabble" and "ants" and "pests". In the Japanese version, he's quite fond of calling them "trash".
* PowerCrystal: [[spoiler:The source of Infinite's power is the gem on his chest, a finalized version of the Phantom Ruby prototype created by Eggman.]]
* PowerIncontinence: Implied. [[spoiler:After being defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, Infinite's body begins to glitch and warp like his virtual reality constructs, implying that they did so much damage to Infinite that his body couldn't contain or control the Phantom Ruby anymore.]]
* PowerOfTheVoid: He can attack with HardLight cubes of PureEnergy. [[spoiler:A more straightforward example is the Phantom Ruby's ability to create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists. He uses this in an attempt to kill Sonic, but Sonic manages to escape with help from the Avatar.]]
* PowersDoTheFighting: [[GameplayAndStorySegregation Gameplay-wise, anyway.]] In cutscenes, he's a dynamic, hands-on fighter who pelts opponents with energy attacks. In his boss fights, he mainly floats around and attacks with his cubes, [[ShapingYourAttacks arranging them in various shapes]]. [[spoiler:Of course, given the [[MasterOfIllusion nature of his powers]], it's not entirely clear how much of what Infinite does is actually him and how much is an illusion created by the Phantom Ruby.]]
* PsychoForHire: He's a {{Sadist}} who ''really'' enjoys his work as Eggman's {{Dragon}}. [[spoiler:He also really enjoyed being a mercenary and willingly joined Eggman. Deconstructed to a degree, as his sadism is a FatalFlaw that ultimately bites him and Eggman in the end and causes him to make mistakes that even Eggman realizes were blunders.]]
* PsychopathicManchild: Pretty much the definition of the trope. [[spoiler:His whole motivation basically boils down to Infinite throwing a massive tantrum over being humiliated by Shadow.]] His "I AM NOT WEAK!!!" rant says it all. Some may even compare him to [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess Zant]].
* PunchClockVillain: [[spoiler:He was originally just another hired goon in Eggman's employ. Then Shadow wrecked his shit, driving him over the edge and turning him into what he is today.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: [[spoiler:The purple gem, referred to as the "Phantom Ruby" in ''VideoGame/SonicMania'' that is the source of Infinite's power, is able to transport people to another destination and can also disable [[SuperMode Super Sonic]].]]
* ReadingsAreOffTheScale: While no numbers are given, Tails states that the readings he's getting off of Infinite don't make sense. [[spoiler:Given the true nature of his powers, this was likely because what it was picking up and what Tails and Sonic saw happening didn't match up.]]
* RealityEnsues:
** Being a BadassNormal doesn't mean you're ready to take on ''every'' opponent that crosses your path. [[spoiler:In Episode Shadow, he fights Shadow in an attempt to avenge his fallen comrades. Shadow, being a highly trained GUN agent and having Chaos Powers, [[CurbStompBattle effortlessly hands him his ass]].]]
** Being an AxCrazy {{Sadist}} makes him dangerous... but it also makes him not nearly as reliable as he ''could'' be and ultimately [[SanityHasAdvantages proves detrimental to his and Eggman's plans]].
* RealityWarper: [[spoiler:Of a sort. Infinite can't control ''conventional'' reality per sé, but he possesses absolute control of reality for anything caught in the Phantom Ruby's field of effect, casting a world of illusion that becomes tangible reality for all afflicted. This can stem anywhere from confusing the senses, losing sense of time, altering the terrain, or ''[[UpToEleven dropping a star from the sky]]''.]]
* RecurringBoss: You fight Infinite [[RuleOfThree three times]] throughout the game. The first fight is with Sonic, the second fight is with the Avatar, and the final battle is with [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Sonic and the Avatar together]].
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: He's colored black and red, and radiating reddish energy, and he is ''certainly'' not to be trifled with.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Subverted. He appears to have red sclera, but Episode Shadow reveals that it's just the red-tinted glass of the mask. His sclera is actually white.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Eggman's red. Best shown in their reaction to [[spoiler:Sonic and the Avatar escaping the Phantom Ruby's Null Space]]. While Eggman is naturally having a FreakOut, Infinite merely responds with an unamused scoff. Ironically -- [[spoiler:Eggman is more of a CrazyPrepared NoNonsenseNemesis (Blue), while Infinite is a StupidEvil {{Sadist}} (Red)]].
* RestrainingBolt: [[spoiler:Exactly how it works isn't made clear, but when Infinite fails one time too many, Eggman proves capable of effortlessly recalling him and reclaiming the Phantom Ruby and Infinite is powerless to do anything about it.]]
* {{Sadist}}: ''Hoo boy''. Infinite absolutely relishes in causing terror and pain in others and he is not afraid to let it be known. A throwaway line in his theme song outright says that Infinite is at his best when people are at their lowest. [[spoiler:Deconstructed, as his rampant sadism costs him and Eggman in the end.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') Fine, I will teach you fear, then pain, and then... Well, at least the fear and pain will end.\\
'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') I can taste your terror, child. All that anxiety and doubt... it's delicious. (''Fires an energy blast in front of the Avatar, [[{{Troll}} intentionally missing just to startle them]]'') Give in to your fear. Flee, screaming, and I'll let you live. (''EvilLaugh'')
* SanityHasAdvantages: While Infinite ''is'' extremely dangerous, he's also clearly an insane {{sadist}}. This screws over him and Eggman on several occasions, as he prioritizes his sadism over pragmatism.
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:In issue four of the prequel comic, Infinite was a ruthless mercenary, but a relatively stable guy (though his Phantom Ruby-induced vision of a desolate world implied there was some element of insanity). However, the death of his squad and his own humiliating defeat at Shadow's hand brought all of that madness to the surface.]]
* SkywardScream: [[spoiler:In his breakdown.]]
* SmallNameBigEgo: Even before taking up the mask and becoming ''reborn'', he considered himself to be the "ultimate mercenary" before Shadow [[CurbStompBattle took him down in one battle]]. [[spoiler:Even after his upgrade, Infinite isn't as big of a fish as he ''thinks'' he is, as he was little more than a pawn for Eggman that the good doctor disposes of the moment he's screwed up one time too many.]]
* SmugSuper: '''And how!''' Infinite has a bigger ego than Sonic and Shadow combined and has all the power to justify it [[spoiler:now. He was a relatively weak MilesGloriosus originally]].
* TheSocialDarwinist: Espouses this sentiment during his fight with the Avatar. As revealed in Episode Shadow, [[spoiler:this sentiment is likely the result of his effortless defeat at Shadow's hands. He never again wanted to be as weak as he was that day, and that conviction and self-loathing seems to have inspired a hatred for those who are weak.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' (''To the Avatar'') You must be a straggler who got left behind. The strong will always vanquish the weak. You have only your own frailty to blame.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Rarely raises his voice above a cold, CreepyMonotone, even when committing acts of mass slaughter.
* SoreLoser: [[spoiler:And how. There aren't many characters out there who handle being defeated by turning AxCrazy and going on the mother of all power trips.]]
* SpaceMaster: [[spoiler:While the Phantom Ruby's powers are mostly centered around illusions and virtual reality, it does give Infinite some degree of spatial manipulation, mostly centered on [[GravityMaster controlling gravity]]. In Central City, Infinite uses the Phantom Ruby to screw with the gravity and he's also capable of creating Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists.]]
* TheStarscream: Subverted. While Infinite [[TeethClenchedTeamwork does disagree with Eggman at times]], he remains loyal to him to the end.
* StartOfDarkness:
** [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
** The fourth and final tie-in comic shows it started a little sooner when [[spoiler:despite failing to steal anything from Eggman, Eggman offers Infinite and the Jackal Squad the chance to become stronger and take over the world. Infinite is more than happy to [[EnemyMine oblige]]]].
* TheStoic: To the point of DissonantSerenity. Infinite is never seen to be anything other than unnervingly calm, barely raising his voice outside of the occasional EvilLaugh and two ThisCannotBe moments. It helps that the mask hides his facial expressions. Episode Shadow shows that he was more emotive prior to the game.
* StoryBreakerPower: [[spoiler:Infinite is able to create "[[EvilKnockoff virtual reality constructs]]" that have the personalities and powers of the characters they are based on, so it's possible for him to create an army of giant [[UltimateLifeForm Shadows, Biolizards]], [[PhysicalGod Chaoses, Dark Gaias]], [[KingKoopaCopy Zavoks]], [[EvilKnockoff Metal Sonics]], [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg Bigs]], etc., but why he does not do so before the climax is unclear.]]
* StupidEvil: His primary flaw is that he prioritizes indulging his own sadism over the mission, with disastrous results for both himself and Dr. Eggman.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: Well, only one eye, but his eye has a gold pupil with red sclera.
* SuperpowerLottery: [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby's illusion powers are incredibly versatile and dangerous. With the Phantom Ruby, Infinite can create [[MasterOfIllusion intricate illusions so real]] that [[YourMindMakesItReal anything that happens to the victim in the illusion affects them for real]]. Infinite can also use this power to create virtual reality constructs of ''any'' character, complete with the memories, powers, and personalities of the original, ''and'' he can alter them to make them stronger and more dangerous, such making Metal Sonic bigger and granting him electrified versions of his energy cubes. Infinite can also use the Phantom Ruby to [[PowerOfTheVoid create Null Space, a seemingly inescapable void in space-time where nothing exists, much like a real-life black hole]]. Apart from that, Infinite [[FlyingBrick has flight, super speed, super strength, energy blasts, and incredible durability.]]]]
* SuperSoldier: [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he's basically one for Eggman. Infinite was already a highly skilled mercenary, but the "super" part didn't come in until he gained the power of the Phantom Ruby.]]
* SuperSpeed: He's quick enough to FlashStep. It’s implied that it's not just actual speed, as he can seemingly teleport. [[spoiler:Infinite's ''real'' power and the strange readings imply he can't even do that and is more using the Phantom Ruby to ''appear'' capable of it. In practice, Sonic is capable of keeping pace with him once the Phantom Ruby's power isn't at play.]]
--> '''Tails''': Whoa. This guy is faster than Sonic!
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Infinite's personality and elements of his backstory loosely recall [[spoiler:Mephiles the Dark. Like Mephiles, Infinite enjoys causing pain in others. Also like Mephiles, a weaker Infinite was defeated by Shadow in the past and left with words to hold onto. Furthermore, when the empowered Infinite meets with Shadow again and reminds him of their past while calling him by name, Shadow is confused, just like when Mephiles reunited with Shadow]].
* {{Technopath}}: [[spoiler:The power of the Phantom Ruby transformed the Hard-Boiled Heavies from ordinary Eggrobos into superpowered machines.]]
* ThisCannotBe: His normally unshakable demeanor has faltered on two occasions, the first being [[spoiler:when the Avatar manages to survive Infinite's illusion during his fight with them]], and the second being [[spoiler:when he's defeated for the final time]].
* TooImportantToWalk: Highlighting his SmugSuper nature, Infinite is never seen walking and prefers to just fly around as a demonstration of his power.
* UnderestimatingBadassery:
** Throughout the game, Infinite never considers Sonic and the Resistance to be a credible threat, passing up an opportunity to kill Sonic because he felt he was NotWorthKilling. Eggman even blasts Infinite for that, [[ProperlyParanoid knowing that as long as Sonic was alive, he'd continue to be a thorn in their side]]. This would end up being a costly mistake, as Sonic eventually becomes strong enough to defeat him.
--->'''Eggman:''' You let the hedgehog ''live?!'' That is a ''great'' source of concern!\\
'''Infinite:''' [[TemptingFate For you, perhaps. He's beaten you for decades, but I defeated him in our first encounter.]]
** [[spoiler:This caused his StartOfDarkness to begin with; despite claiming to be the "Ultimate Mercenary", he hadn't counted on being beaten by [[UltimateLifeForm Shadow.]]]]
** [[spoiler:He also shows to be dismissive to Eggman and outright brags about defeating Sonic when Eggman couldn't. Cue Eggman effortlessly pulling a YouHaveFailedMe on Infinite after one failure too many on the Jackal's part.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: [[spoiler:Implied: While Infinite has some skill in hand-to-hand combat thanks to his mercenary background and can steamroll through a good chunk of the cast, he is entirely reliant on the Phantom Ruby in combat. His boss fights mainly consist of him letting his energy cubes do all the work, with his only physical attack being an easily avoidable DashAttack. In cutscenes, his fighting style basically boils down to "throw energy blasts at opponents until they die". He's shown to have trouble when its powers are weakened or neutralized. In addition, Eggman shows himself far more proficient in the Phantom Ruby's use.]]
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: Infinite skirts the line about as razor-thin as you can get. His constant death threats and assurances that he will make things slow and painful for any opposition still avoid bumping the rating above "E-10+" (so no worse than the highest rated games in the franchise like ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'', ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', or ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'') and don't necessarily remove the usual ''Sonic''-feel from the scenes he's not in, but he definitely changes the tone of the game in comparison to the rest of the franchise.
* VillainBall: After defeating Sonic in the Mystic Jungle, he lets him live, deeming him NotWorthKilling. Eggman calls him out on doing so, knowing that Sonic will continue to be a threat as long as he's still alive, and is ultimately proven right.
* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:He has a huge one after Shadow humiliated him, going into a insane freak-out which pushes him into becoming Eggman's weapon. He also has another (albeit brief) one when he starts to disappear after being defeated for the last time.]]
-->'''Infinite:''' [[spoiler:''[notices his hand shaking]'' I... I'm shaking... Me!? Me... Afraid...!? Urgh. Pathetic!? Me... he's calling ''ME'' weak!? No! I am not weak! I'm... I'm not. I'm not weak! I AM NOT WEEEEAAAAAAK! URRRAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!]]
* VillainSong: Has one that can be heard [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKjOJuPjiu4&t=0s here]], which goes out of its way to describe just how dangerous and powerful he is and how he'll destroy anything in his way.
* VisualPun: Infinite's habit of [[IHaveTheHighGround hovering above the heroes]] means that he's ''literally'' "looking down on them".
* WalkingSpoiler: He's a major driving force behind the conflict of ''Sonic Forces''. [[spoiler:The Phantom Ruby also counts as this due to being the same one from ''VideoGame/SonicMania''.]]
* WasOnceAMan: According to an interview with Izuka, he used to be a regular guy like Sonic and Co. before aligning himself with Eggman. [[spoiler:Episode Shadow reveals that he was once an ordinary jackal and a mercenary hired by Eggman to protect his lab in Mystic Jungle, where he encountered Shadow. After a humiliating defeat at the dark hedgehog's hands, he vowed to become stronger, leading him to become Infinite.]]
* WeCanRuleTogether: [[spoiler:Eggman offers this to Infinite after a fight with him, and Infinite accepted the offer.]]
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: [[spoiler:After his final defeat in ''Sonic Forces'', he fades away into a light and flies into a tower, after which Tails tracks his Phantom Ruby leading to Eggman's final mecha with Infinite nowhere to be seen. Exactly what Eggman did is unclear.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He has ghostly white hair and he's one of the bad guys.
* WhosLaughingNow: [[spoiler:His main ambition for utilizing the Phantom Ruby. Rather expectedly, Shadow, the one who started his embitterment, is the first person he personally toys with before starting about capturing Sonic.]]
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: [[spoiler:Before obtaining the power of the Phantom Ruby, Infinite was just a mercenary who did his job and was a relatively stable guy all around (though the vision he received from the Phantom Ruby implies some degree of mental instability). By the time of the game, the Ruby's power has clearly gone to his head and has turned him into a sadistic, power-hungry sociopath.]]
* TheWorfEffect: His first meeting with Sonic ends with the hero utterly trounced.
* WorthyOpponent: Completely averted. He treats everyone he fights with utter contempt.
* YouHaveFailedMe: [[spoiler:All but said. After the virtual sun plan fails thanks to Infinite's screw-up and he's defeated by Sonic and the Avatar, he's teleported away against his will. Tails then tracks his Phantom Ruby underground... leading directly to Eggman's final mecha powered by it, with no sign of Infinite.]]
* YourMindMakesItReal: [[spoiler:Revealed to be the actual power of the Phantom Ruby: it creates illusions that nonetheless feel real to the victim's brain, causing injuries taken in the illusion to occur to the victim in reality.]]

** It's the first final boss fought in a Super form (outside of the ''VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy'' and ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries'') to be able to knock tings out of a Super character, meaning physically harming them. To contrast this, Perfect Chaos, Finalhazard, Metal Overlord, and Devil Doom were only able to slow them down.
