The two components that make up the being known as Solaris. Mephiles represents its intelligence, and Iblis, its raw power. Some time before the events of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', Solaris was experimented on by the Duke of Soleanna, but an accident separated the entity into its two components. Mephiles was sealed in the Scepter of Darkness by Shadow, and Iblis was sealed by Silver in the young Princess Elise.

When push comes to shove, however, he's a vicious and manipulative coward who is quick to stop with the false compliments when somebody catches onto him.

* KnightOfCerebus: Mephiles is unarguably one of the darkest villains in the franchise. Other villains either had somewhat comical moments (even Metal Sonic) or took some time to voice their motives. Mephiles never does anything that can be considered comical and leaves the players to [[HiddenAgendaVillain decipher his ''true'' motives for themselves]]. Whenever he enters the story, any sense of lightheartedness evacuates and he's constantly played seriously, toying with others and ruining their day for the fun of it before moving on with his big plan. Also, he's the only villain to canonically [[spoiler:kill a major character (Sonic, for that matter), as well as succeeding in destroying the world as well as the fabric of existence]]. The damage he does is so staggering, so severe that the only way to clean up is to [[spoiler:throw away the timeline and start a new one where he has no involvement]].
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: The implied reason why he often pulls [[DirtyCoward dirty tactics]] on his opponents is because he's lacking in [[spoiler:Solaris's]] physical power and has to play mind games.
* LackOfEmpathy: He taunts Omega about [[spoiler:his part in sealing away Shadow in the future]], and he laughs [[spoiler:after (supposedly) murdering Sonic, and especially at Elise's sorrow and mental anguish at his (supposed) death]].

* ManipulativeBastard: This along with TheChessmaster. He manipulated seemingly everyone in the story over 210 years just so he could [[spoiler:cause Elise to develop feelings towards Sonic, only to kill Sonic, thus freeing Iblis from inside Elise, allowing himself to merge with Iblis to become Solaris]]. Even more impressive is that he doesn't actually lie to Silver at all. He just leaves out a TEEEENY but important piece of information.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Overlaps with MeaningfulName. Mephiles = Mephistopheles, the demon from Faust, sometimes associated with Satan. Likewise, Iblis is the Islamic name for the Devil before his fall. See below in the Iblis section for more.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: In the Last Story, he shows the power to [[spoiler:bring every Chaos Emerald right to him as soon as he gets one]], a power that is extremely useful in the ''Sonic'' games, with no prior reference or reason for this power to have appeared. Unfortunately, it's one of many parts of the issues that make people believe he has an extremely large case of ComplexityAddiction, since [[spoiler:in the future, he didn't show this power at all, and he gave a Chaos Emerald to Silver to start off the plot by way of TimeTravel]].
* NoMouth: His muzzle kind of inflates and deflates when he talks, though.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: His crystalline form he uses for half the game is much more detailed than any of the other anthropomorphic characters, and lacks feet. Even in his (very rare) other appearances, the amount of detail stays.
* NothingIsScarier: The Prima game guide doesn't seem to know what he is. His description mostly consists of theories and rumors, constantly referring to him as "it". The only thing it ''can'' say is that "it must never be allowed to capture the Chaos Emeralds."
* NotSoDifferent: He is in a way a darker version of Shadow's ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'' personality. Both are chessmasters that played the desires of another to follow suit to their plans (Shadow to Eggman, Mephiles to Silver). Both desired revenge on humanity (especially those that experimented on them), though for Mephiles, revenge was only a side-motive. Both have planet-sized egos. And both nearly succeeded. Shadow's plan only failed because he decided he didn't want to go through with it; Mephiles' plan actually ''worked'' and the heroes had to really struggle to undo it.
* NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist: He sent Silver to the past, not to help Silver stop Iblis from destroying the world, but to break Iblis's seal so that Mephiles and Iblis can reform into Solaris and consume all of time and existence.
* ObviouslyEvil: He introduces himself as [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Mephiles the Dark]]. When asked about himself, he falls silent and changes the subject. He ''looks'' like an evil twin of Shadow the Hedgehog (who himself already looks like an evil twin of Sonic the Hedgehog). It's almost mind-boggling that Silver didn't realize Mephiles was a bad guy the very first time they met. He moves like a puppet, has soulless, feral eyes, and [[NoMouth NO MOUTH]] (yet his face [[UncannyValley moves when he talks]]). And that's when he is a Shadow doppelganger, to say nothing of his powered up form, which is crystal-like, emits blue flames, and has red scleras with [[SicklyGreenGlow green glowing]] cat irises. And is voiced by Creator/DanGreen. On top of that, his name is a corruption of [[{{Satan}} Mephistopheles]].

Ironically, ''he'' has a pretty good reason to hate Shadow, so he probably intended to kill him after he was no longer useful. Shadow accuses him of [[OmnicidalManiac craving destruction]], but he never confirms or denies this. Is he truly that evil? Does he consider this a way of getting even with Earth for ripping him from his body and putting him in a small cage for ten years?

* EldritchAbomination: He is a spirit that embodies the mind and will of a god, but beyond this there is no real telling what he is. He doesn't even seem to have a true material form. He has a crystalline form in Shadow's story and the Last Story, but nobody can seem to determine if this is truly what Mephiles looks like. [[spoiler:There's also the fact that, when he's in his proper body, he's actually a god that can feast on time itself.]]

Whenever he enters the story, any sense of lightheartedness evacuates and he's constantly played seriously, toying with others and ruining their day for the fun of it before moving on with his big plan. Whether or not Solaris was always malevolent is [[YMMV up for debate]], but it (or, rather, Mephiles) certainly was after this, if not having been stuck in solitary confinement for ten years straight!

* AxCrazy: Let's see, his plans essentially amount to the destruction of existence itself, his hatred of Shadow is almost to the point of psychosis, and he also laughs exhileratedly at [[spoiler:Sonic's (supposed) death]]? Seems to fit that to a T.
