At the end of the anime, Homura was last seen fighting off wraiths with her new powers. At the beginning of the movie, she's returned to her glasses-wearing persona and is once again a transfer student at Madoka's school. She immediately joins the other magical girls but soon begins questioning the nature of the world she is in, returning to her stoic {{Badass}} persona and serving as the main character of the movie.

!Homura Akemi
->Voiced by: ChiwaSaitou (JP)

At the end of the anime, Homura was last seen fighting off wraiths with her new powers. At the beginning of the movie, she's is returned to her glasses-wearing persona and is once again a transfer student at Madoka's school. She immediately joins the other magical girls but soon begins questioning the nature of the world she is in.

* AffablyEvil: She might be a [[spoiler: Goddess of Evil]], but [[spoiler: Homucifer]] at least creates a world where everyone is happy, [[spoiler: even if she has to kidnap Madoka to do it]]
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: [[spoiler: She actually does save Madoka...by becoming the devil to her god.
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: As Homulilly she is essentially tortured by her IronicHell, is aware of their surroundings, and powerless to fight back the entirety of its psychological horror. It is implied this was true of all witches.]]
* [[spoiler: AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: As Homulilly.]]
* [[spoiler:BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: An explanation for her actions at the end of the movie. The psychological terror she endured over the course of the series finally reaches its tipping point in ''Rebellion'' when she more or less decides that it's better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven.]]
* BigShutUp: Pulls a VERY SCARY one on Kyubey. The effect is lost on the critter, but [[NightmareFuel not on the audience]].
* BossWarningSiren: [[spoiler:Homulilly has it's own countdown.]]
* BishonenLine: [[spoiler: From Homulilly to Demon Homura.]]
* ByronicHero: Possibly more so than in the original anime. [[spoiler: She is taking the role of Lucifer, after all.]]
* ClaspYourHandsIfYouDeceive: [[spoiler: Yes, Demon Homura does a [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Gendo pose]] at one point.]]
* [[spoiler:ClingyJealousGirl: Implied in Rebellion as one of the reasons as to why she dethroned Ultimate Madoka. Madoka's words that she cares deeply for Homura as well as [[LoveYouAndEverybody everyone else]] were one of the final things to throw her over the edge.]]
* CoolMask and NiceHat: [[spoiler: As Homulilly. They quickly fall off, to reveal that there's nothing on the top of her head but a field of flowers.]]
* DarkMessiah: [[spoiler: As Demon Homura; kind of. While Madoka makes the world better out of selfless love for everyone, Homura makes the world better so that it can be a prison for Madoka. Familiarity with UsefulNotes/{{Buddhism}} would explain why this might be a ''very bad thing''.]]
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: Homura actually usurps Madoka as god.]]
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: [[spoiler: Subverted, and not in the way you'd think.]]
* DiscardAndDraw: Homura has regained her TimeStandsStill powers. [[spoiler: Mostly because it's all in her head.]]
* DrivenToSuicide[=/=]DeathIsTheOnlyOption: The trailer's played with this, but ultimately it was a case of NeverTrustATrailer. In the movie proper [[spoiler:after finding out Kyubey's plan to capture Madoka and use her to bring back the old system, Homura decides to become a witch and then starts moving towards a guillotine to make sure she dies.]]
* [[spoiler: EntitledToHaveYou: The dark side of Homura's desire to be with Madoka.]]

She does not succeed, however, thanks to the combined efforts of the five magical girls trapped in her witch barrier.]]
* [[spoiler: HumanoidAbomination: Homulilly is reasonably humanoid. Demon Homura plays it straighter.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: She begins questioning her world when she starts to remember the anime's events.
* LostAesop: In the original series this was "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." [[spoiler: In this movie it's subverted when Homura gets exactly what she wants...though it's suggested she broke the universe worse.]]
* [[spoiler:LoveMakesYouEvil: Homura's love for Madoka drives her to become the devil.]]

* [[spoiler: OurMonstersAreWeird: Homulilly is probably more full of sheer WTF than any other witch seen previously. She initially looks like a giant humanoid figure...but then she looses most of her head and it just gets stranger from there. First there's the exposed portions of the skeleton and the ribbons that turn into hands. Then there's the tears of teeth that can move around and shoot nuts, the clock hands emerge from the remains of her head, the flying shields with fanged mouths, the weird-looking birds, the Homura-soilders that come in various sizes, and the [[DemonicDummy Demonic Dummies]].]]

* [[spoiler:PsychoLesbian: Her deep devotion to Madoka becomes full-blown {{Yandere}} obsession by the 3rd movie.]]
* [[spoiler: RealityWarper: As Devil Homura, she recreates the world and rules as its supreme power now that she has dethroned Ultimate Madoka.]]
* [[spoiler:SanitySlippage: The entire movie is a long, slow one for her. By the stinger, it's possible Homura's ''finally'' gone mad...]]
* [[spoiler:SatanicArchetype: She ends up becoming essentially Lucifer in MagicalGirl form and the EvilCounterpart of Madoka, who is a MessianicArchetype.]]
* SlasherSmile: It's ''really creepy''.
* [[spoiler: SlouchOfVillainy: As Demon Homura.]]
* [[spoiler: SoulJar: After becoming Demon Homura, she breaks her old Soul Gem in her mouth and gets something entirely new. Which she then swallows.]]
* TheGlassesComeOff: When she starts getting serious.
* TragicHero: The film is essentially all about how [[spoiler:Homura's undying love for Madoka causes her to become the villain.]]
* [[spoiler:TomatoInTheMirror: Homura realizes the Witch she's hunting it's ''herself''.]]
* [[spoiler:TotalitarianUtilitarian: Weird example. Homura just wants a world where Madoka is happy...but that pretty much means creating a world where other people are happier too.]]
* TragicKeepsake: Madoka's hair ribbon [[spoiler: though it only actually appears near the end of the movie. In one of the last scenes Homura actually returns it to Madoka.]]
* {{Ubermensch}}: [[spoiler:Homura is finally winning at life, saving Madoka and creating a world where she can be happy with her. [[ProtagonistJourneyToVillain Too bad for everyone else, though]]. Or maybe not. Sayaka and Nagisa are alive, the quality of Mami's and Kyoko's lives has improved substantially, and everything seems relatively normal again.]]
* UnwantedRescue: [[spoiler: As Homulilly, she resists the attempts of the magical girls to save her because she wanted to die.]]
* [[spoiler:UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: Possibly subverted, given that Homura is more interested in keeping Madoka happy. Making the world better is just a means to that end.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: Even worse than in the original anime!
* [[spoiler:WellIntentionedExtremist: Say what you will about her FaceHeelTurn, but ultimately, it ended up doing to Kyubey something not even Madoka could do, and left the world in a fairly happy state... at the cost of having to brainwash her best friend and feeling remorse for all eternity, or at least until the next installment in the series.]]
* VillainProtagonist: [[spoiler:Homura is the most proactive character in the movie and the main focus. At the end, she turns on Madoka and becomes the Devil to Madoka's God.]]
* [[spoiler:{{Yandere}}: While she already treaded the line in the series, by this movie, Homura traps Madoka in her new world so Madoka doesn't leave her ever again.]]

!Madoka Kaname
->Voiced by: AoiYuki (JP)

At the end of the anime Madoka wished to destroy all witch's before they were born, which ultimately erased her from exsistence. However, when the movie begins she is inexplicably alive and living with her family while secretly being a magical girl. Just how has this happened?
----
* [[spoiler: AmnesiacGod: Twice. The first time was intentional, and she entrusted her powers and memories to Sayaka and Nagisa so they could return it to her at the right time. The second time was forced by Devil Homura, who extracted her human self from Ultimate Madoka and rewrote her memories as well as suppressing her powers. However, it is heavily implied that she will regain her powers and memories when given the right trigger.]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence For a given value of dead]]. Exactly how this happened is one of the movie's mysteries. [[spoiler: In fact, she's still a concept and is just manifesting as herself in Homura's witch barrier. However, at the end of the movie Homura actually brings her back to "life" for real.]]
* BigGood: As in canon.
* [[spoiler:BroughtDownToNormal: At the end of the movie she returns to being a normal girl]]
* DecoyProtagonist: As in canon; the viewer initially follows Madoka, but it then switches to Homura.
* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: Despite her apparent omnipotence, Madoka didn't expect Homura to usurp her.]]
** [[spoiler: NotSoOmniscientAfterAll]]
* FakeMemories: [[spoiler: Initially it seems that these memories were implanted by Homura's witch barrier. It turns out Madoka was unaffected and instead entrusted her memories to Sayaka and Nagisa in order to fool Kyubey.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler: In Homura's new world. See AmnesiacGod.]]
* LoveYouAndEverybody: A [[DudeNotFunny non-humorous example]]. [[spoiler:Homura cries in a field of flowers, partially about no one understanding her and also about her feelings towards Madoka being [[UnrequitedLove unreturned]]. Madoka moves in and assures her that she cares deeply about her. Homura is excited, until Madoka [[NiceJobBreakingItHero goes on to list all the other people that she cares about as well]]...]]
* [[spoiler: MemoryGambit: Does so in order to fool Kyubey.]]
* [[spoiler:NewTransferStudent: In Homura's new world. In fact, she was living in America for three years.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: She's supposed to be.
* UnwantedRescue: [[spoiler: Homura "saves" her from the Law of Cycles.]]
* WistfulAmnesia: [[spoiler: In Demon Homura's new world.]]

!Sayaka Miki
->Voiced by: EriKitamura (JP)

At the end of the anime Sayaka had vanished from the world, taken by the Law of Cycles. Like Madoka, she has inexplicably returned to life. Just what secrets is she hiding?
----
* BackFromTheDead: Like Madoka, she is somehow alive again. [[spoiler: It turns out that Sayaka is now part of Law of Cycles and is basically acting as an assistant to Madoka. She then comes back for real as an apparent side effect of Demon Homura's ascension.]]
** [[spoiler: CameBackStrong: "Dying" has given her new powers. See SummonMagic.]]
* BackToBackBadasses: With Kyoko.
* [[BashBrothers Bash Sisters]]: Fights this way with Kyoko, especially during the final battle where [[spoiler: Oktavia, controlled by Sayaka herself like a weapon, wields a giant version of Kyoko's spear]].
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler: The very end of the movie, thanks to Demon Homura.]]
* [[spoiler: DefiantToTheEnd: Just before Demon Homura erases the last of her memories, Sayaka says that she will always remember Homura is a demon.]]
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Oktavia Von Seckendorf, kinda. See SummonMagic.]]
* IaijutsuPractitioner: [[spoiler:She frees Homura from Mami's ribbon restraints by cutting the lock in this fashion.]]
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler: In Demon Homura's new world.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: [[spoiler: She's one of only two people who knows what's really going on due to Madoka suppressing her own memory, and she was even able to fool ''Homura'' and surprise the latter with her newfound strength and cunning.]]
* [[spoiler: OurAngelsAreDifferent: While not explicitly stated, Sayaka arguably fills the role of an angel for Madokami.]]
* PosthumousCharacter: Like Madoka, she's supposed to be.
* ShipTease: [[spoiler: During the climactic batttle she tells Kyoko she was happy to be by her side and regrets leaving her behind when she died.]]
* SummonMagic[=/=][[spoiler:GuardianEntity: As part of the Law of Cycles, Sayaka can summon Oktavia von Seckendorf, her witch form, and also an army of familiars from other witches.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: Thanks to retaining memories of previous timelines due to Madoka's influence, she fights much less erratically and is overall more cunning. She's also capable of summoning Oktavia as a GuardianEntity, as well as a boatload of familiar.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: She still maintains some brashness but is overall a lot nicer and more understanding than she was in the original anime.
* UnwantedRescue: [[spoiler: She's not to happy about Homura's new world, even if she has been brought back to life.]]
* WistfulAmnesia: [[spoiler: In Demon Homura's new world.]]

!Mami Tomoe
->Voiced by: KaoriMizuhashi (JP)

As before, Mami is still the senior magical girl in Mitakihara. However, she's now living with an odd creature she calls Bebe, which seems to have helped combat her lonliness. She comes into conflict with Homura when the latter attempts to discover the truth of their world.
----
* BatmanGambit: Pulls a hugely epic one on [[spoiler: Homura. First she attaches a ribbon to Homura to make herself immune to Homura's [[TimeStandsStill time stops.]] Then, when Homura seems to have landed a disabling shot, she reveals that the Mami Homura was fighting was just a copy made from her ribbons.]]
** [[spoiler: TheChessmaster: Homura was being played from the beginning.]]
* BuildingSwing: Mami's ribbons are much more versatile than they were in the anime.
* BigSisterMentor: To ''everyone''.
* FakeMemories: [[spoiler:An effect of Homura's MentalWorld.]]
* ImprobableHairStyle: It turns out she curls her hair with ''magic''.
* ModestyTowel: During one gratuitous scene where she comes out of the bath.
* [[spoiler: SelfDuplication: She actually makes a copy of herself with her ribbons.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: What happens when Mami is no longer held back by her emotional issues? She adds tons of new weapons like handguns and shotguns to her arsenal, she uses her ribbons to devastating effect [[spoiler: even using them to create a duplicate of herself at one point]] and [[spoiler: her Tiro Finale upgrades to a RAILWAY GUN.]]

!Kyoko Sakura
->Voiced by: AiNonaka (JP)

Kyoko is now a classmate of Madoka, Sayaka and Homura. She's also living in Sayaka's place, and it seems that the social interactions is causing her to act differently than she did in the anime. When Homura starts getting suspicious, she comes to Kyoko with a request that tips her off to the secret of their world.
---
* BackToBackBadasses: With Sayaka.
* [[BashBrothers Bash Sisters]]: Fights this way with Sayaka, especially during the final battle where [[spoiler: Oktavia wields a giant version of Kyoko's spear]].
* BigEater: As in canon, but played for cuteness and laughs.
* DemotedToExtra: She has a more marginal role than the other characters.
* FakeMemories: [[spoiler:An effect of Homura's MentalWorld.]]
* {{Flanderization}}: Her BigEater tendencies are subjected to this. [[spoiler: This is likely due to the FakeMemories implanted by Homura's witch barrier.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: Kyoko now acts more like a typical schoolgirl, and is good pals with the other characters. [[spoiler:This is the result of FakeMemories. At the end of the movie, Homura's changes to the new world keep her from reverting to her previous personality.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Apples...but this is also the result of {{Flanderization}}.
* ShipTease: Her and Sayaka are actually living together.

!Nagisa Momoe
->Voiced by: KanaAsumi (JP)

A brand new magical girl, she is quite a bit younger than the others. [[spoiler: The true identity of Bebe, see her section for more details. Also the magical girl that became the witch Charlotte.]]
----
* [[spoiler: AscendedExtra[=/=]BreakoutCharacter: Due to Charlotte's popularity with the fandom, she was given a magical girl form in ''Rebellion'' who joins the main cast.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler: In Demon Homura's new world.]]
* BubbleGun: See InstrumentOfMurder.
* CatGirl: Her magical girl outfit resembles this.
* ChromaticArrangement: Orange.
* [[spoiler: ExtremeOmnivore: When she puts on her "Bebe" face. It's unclear if this is her native magical ability or an effect of being part of the Law of Cycles.]]
* {{Expy}}: Design-wise, she is one to [[Manga/HidamariSketch Yuno and Nazuna]].
* [[spoiler: {{Familiar}}: Once she starts fighting she's accompanied by two of Charlotte's familiars.]]
* GirlishPigtails: Sports two very small ones.
* HairDecorations: Flower-like hairbands.
* IHaveManyNames: Nagisa Momoe, [[spoiler: Charlotte, Bebe]].
* InstrumentOfMurder: Her weapon is a trumpet that [[BubbleGun shoots bubbles]]. Each of said bubbles can pack quite a punch; the bubbles from one blow of the trumpet can shake and crack a strong Witch's barrier.
* IWasToldThereWouldBeCake: Apparently the real reason why [[spoiler: she went with Madoka and Sayaka to Homura's barrier; she just wanted to eat some cheese again.]]
* MysticalWhiteHair: Her white hair highlights her mysteriousness.
* NotQuiteFlight: During the battle against [[spoiler: Homulilly]] Nagisa rides on this odd long flying black thing [[spoiler: vaguely reminiscent of Charlotte's alternate form.]]
* [[spoiler: OurAngelsAreDifferent: See Sayaka's entry.]]
* PluckyComicRelief: More childish and amusing than the rest of the cast.
* [[spoiler: PosthumousCharacter[=/=]BackFromTheDead: As the witch Charlotte she was actually dead to begin with, but she returns as part the Law of Cycles. She's brought back for real in Demon Homura's new world.]]
** [[spoiler: CameBackStrong: Partially by virtue of coming back as her magical girl self.]]
* RapunzelHair: Her hair is even longer in relation to her body than Homura and Kyoko.
* SixthRanger: Joins the original magical girls [[spoiler: minus Homura, since Homura is turning into a witch]].
* SweetTooth: [[spoiler: Implied by her witch form.]]
* TechnicolorEyes[=/=]SupernaturalGoldEyes: They're yellow on the inside and red on the outside.
* TokenMiniMoe: She's younger than the rest of the cast and goes to elementary school.
* [[spoiler: TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cheese, to the point where she interrupts an emotional moment between Kyoko and Sayaka to proclaim her love for it. This trope is spoiled because it's a pretty balatant indicator of her identity.]]
** FridgeHorror: Considering [[spoiler: Mami refers to herself as cheese during the cake song, and considering what Charlotte did to her in episode 3. Or perhaps it's subtle form of ShipTease.]]
* [[spoiler: VoluntaryShapeshifting: Can transform into her witch-self, and can also put on her Bebe face in order to gain ExtremeOmnivore powers. It's unclear if this is her natural magical ability or the result of being part of the Law of Cycles.]]

!Bebe

An odd creature that appears to be the witch Charlotte. She's currently living with Mami and is helping the magical girls fight Nightmares. [[spoiler: She is secretly the magical girl Nagisa Momoe, see her section for more details.]]
----
* AscendedExtra: After having only appeared in one episode of the anime, she gets an expanded role.
* BigEater: It does like to eat.
* HeelFaceTurn[=/=]TookALevelInKindness: Unlike her anime self, she is firmly on the heroes side, and is practically Mami's best friend.
* NonstandardCharacterDesign: Her design and movements differ quite a bit from the other characters.
* [[spoiler: ObfuscatingStupidity: Bebe[=/=]Nagisa knows what's really going on, and is acting the way she is in order to fool Kyubey.]]

* RedHerring: [[spoiler: Homura initially targets Bebe, since she's obviously a witch. The truth turns out to be more complicated.]]
* SpeakingSimlish[=/=]TheUnintelligible: What she actually says is mostly nonsense, but it's transated through subtitles.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Cheese, of course.
* TeamPet: To the magical girls, particularly Mami.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: As in the previous series. [[spoiler: She also adds a MagicalGirl tranformation.]]
