** He is also this to himself as of ''Black 2 and White 2''. Unlike Ghetsis in the prequel who has longer hair, is dressed in a Sage robe and comes off as well-meaning and polite before unveiling his true colours to the player, Ghetsis in the sequel is immediately evil, has a short hair and a cane to his hand and dresses in dark clothing to cement his full transition into a black-hearted villain.

His mainline anime appearance was much publicized, and he went on to get a generous amount of merchandise and marketing, including a Nendoroid figure.

* BreakingOldTrends: Part of N's popularity is helped by just how different he is from Pokémon's traditional rivals that came before and after him:
** He is the first rival to be part of and even ''leading'' a villainous team in Team Plasma, and continues to lead Old Team Plasma.
** He is the first [=NPC=] to completely be rid of all of his Pokémon and challenge the player with a new team every time.
** He is the first rival to capture and use a Legendary in battle against the player.
** He is the first [=NPC=] to use a Legendary outside a battle facility.

* ConfusionFu: Since N releases his old team after every battle and catches a new one, he ends up using all 17 types that existed at that point in time and does not use any Pokémon twice, which makes it pretty hard to predict what Pokémon he's doing to send out next unless you're already familiar with the game.

There's also the matter of how they reacted to their defeats. In Giovanni's case, he recovers from his loss at the hands of Ethan/Lyra during ''HGSS'', as shown in ''[=B2W2=]'', and is seen to be in a mentally functioning state. Ghetsis, on the other hand, flies into a rage and he later goes into a violent mental breakdown after being defeated by Nate/Rosa, causing the Shadow Triad to take him away after being broken into a vegetable.

** To Giovanni. Both are [[AbusiveParents abusive fathers]] to their son who are known for their uncaring and selfish parenting, who pursue goals of world domination, as well as being driven insane after being defeated by the player character. But while Giovanni is AffablyEvil crime lord who is affable to the player and even congratulates the player for his victory against him, Ghetsis is FauxAffablyEvil who is brutally antagonistic to the player and even attempted to ''kill'' him/her with his Kyurem inside Giant Chasm. * {{Foil}}: To the scientific-minded Colress, as they are both Ghetsis' CoDragons. Zinzolin is a heavyset man who is TheBrute while Colress is a LeanAndMean man who is an EvilGenius. Their Pokémon types also contrast. Zinzolin uses Ice-type Pokémon who heavily leans to physical attack and defense, while Colress uses Steel-type Pokémon (except Beheeyem), which are weak against Ice-type, with Colress leaning more heavily to special attack and defense.
