Starting the ''Advanced'' series as a newbie trainer, May only wanted to travel the world at first. She initially disliked Pokémon before experience around them changed her mind. * BrattyHalfPint: Downplayed case. While usually sweet-natured, May can sometimes have a very huffy temperament, especially when she starts to get too confident in her abilities.

As a result, she decides to stop traveling with Ash, realizing such a step is necessary for her to step out of his shadow, but she still expresses her gratitude to him for everything he has taught her.

* {{Tsundere}}: A Type B, meaning she's mostly sweet and gentle...unless [[JerkWithaHeartOfGold Drew]] is around, or Ash and/or her brother Max pisses her off.
* TheUnfavorite: Downplayed. Her parents are generally a lot more interested in Max, though that's probably just because he's younger and needs more attention. They do a good job of cheering her on in Contests, though -- her mother traveled all the way from Petalburg to Slateport City to support her when the Hoenn Grand Festival came!
* VerbalTic: "-kamo", which even squeezed its way into her ImageSong!
** StealthPun: Her starter was Achamo, which could easily mimic this sound. The VerbalTic isn't present in the dub, and would have to be changed anyway as Achamo's English name is Torchic. However, "kamo" is used to suggest uncertainty and can be translated to "may," which makes her English name quite appropriate.
* WasTooHardOnHim: May in one episode said some very hurtful things to Max as her words caused him to say that he hated her and ran away. While looking for him, May realized how harsh she was on Max and was worrying that something happened to him. After seeing that he still cared about her, May apologized to Max for being mean to him, which he accepts.
* WhatTheHellHero: Received an earful from Nurse Joy and the other judges for pressuring her Bulbasaur in its first Contest.
* YourSizeMayVary: Was roughly Misty's height in her first episode. In all later episodes she's slightly shorter than Ash, though some OffModel moments occur, most commonly the actual difference in height between her and Ash.
