One of the top guilds of YGGDRASIL with 41 members. Consisting only of members of society, the guild rose to prominence through the excessive purchase of cash items and possession of rare relics. One of their notable characteristics is that all of the guild members must play a non-humanoid race.
The guild itself is famous for its possession of eleven world class items, the most out of any guild in YGGDRASIL, and its creation of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, the most difficult dungeon which no one could conquer.
!General Tropes
* AntiPoopSocking: One of their rules was you MUST have a life outside of the game and be gainfully employed.
* BadassCrew: A top ranked guild that owns multiple World Class items and a Guild Dungeon that is renowned to be virtually impenetrable.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Momonga and the other members of guild Ainz Ooal Gown were just players who often get discriminated for playing as non-human races. And then they thought if people are gonna treat them as monsters, then let them be one. They then became one of the most well-known and powerful guild in Yggdrasil and their base is a dungeon infamous for being totally unbeatable. They were also a notorious PK guild, part of Momonga's plans involve doing good works so that their Guild's name would be associated with heroic acts.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: They were killed left and right because they were monster races, so they decided to just be monsters.
* TrueCompanions: The First Nine members of the guild were this to each other. And from the way Momonga remembers the guild, all 41 members were probably this to each other as well. It's probably also why members quitting or not showing up in the game hits Momonga even harder than normal, considering the fact that he had no such friends in real life.

Ainz Ooal Gown, formerly known as Momonga, is the main protagonist of the Overlord. He is the guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown and regarded as the highest of the 41 Supreme Beings by the [[NonPlayerCharacter NPCs]] of the Great Tomb of Nazarick.

An unexceptional salary man thrown into the role of a leader of more than a gaming guild, Momonga quickly adapts to his role as a (supposedly) EvilOverlord while still retaining distinctly human traits; notably, Momonga searches for his friends in this new world.

He has the appearance of a Lich, an undead skeleton creature devoid of skin and flesh. He wears an elaborate, jet-black academic gown adorned with gold and violet edges, has a dark red glow inside the empty eye sockets, and a dark halo-like object glimmered behind its head.

In his dark warrior persona, he wears a fully black body armor with purple and golden markings. He has a red cape on his back with two large swords.

He then turned her down after she ''excitedly asked him to take her virginity'' claiming there were more pressing matters at the moment. Similar occurrences happen with Shalltear. Unfortunately, most if not all his "disinterest" is merely a front, as the real reason why he hasn't had relations with either of them is that he is physically unable, thanks to his skeletal body. This frustrates him to no end.
* TheAce: Natch. He was pretty strong in Yggdrasil (though he specialized more for PvE than PvP), but in the New World, he has virtually no equals. ** Bringing harm to a denizen of Nazarick is also a good way to piss him off. After [[spoiler:he was forced to slay a brainwashed Shalltear]] he is hellbent on finding out who did it to make sure they can't threaten Nazarick. It also takes him a great deal of self-control [[spoiler:to stop himself from killing Evileye after finding out that she nearly killed Entoma]]. She was still able to sense his anger for a moment, but fortunately misinterpreted the reason for it.
** Being cut off from his guild mates is a sore spot in general for him, so anything that is even remotely disrespectful to them enrages him. In volume 7, Foresight's leader tries to bluff his way out by claiming he was sent by a friend of Ainz. Ainz briefly lets himself hope it's true, then becomes furious after realizing it was a lie. [[spoiler:So he changes his mind about letting them die a warrior's death and makes the leader and his girlfriend [[CruelAndUnusualDeath hosts for Gashokukochuuou's parasites]].]]

When Clementine sees him fight, she complains that he is "making fun of warriors".

* TheChainsOfCommanding: He's under the impression that he has to be the perfect overlord for his subordinates or they might lose their respect or possibly even loyalty to him. As a result, whenever Demiurge assumes he figured out what Ainz' (nonexistent) master plans are, Ainz feels compelled to do whatever Demiurge said. However, it's quite clear that he is worrying over nothing; Everyone important in Nazarick is fanatically loyal to the point that Demiurge has something of an existential crisis when he considers a world where he has no one to serve.
* CluelessBoss: Even when he finds out what his subordinates are doing, he just goes with it. Can't let his subordinates think he's incompetent, after all, even if they wouldn't care.

When Clementine, one of the strongest physical fighters in the realm gets caught in a grapple, he's strong enough to completely rupture her internal organs and shatter her spine just by squeezing her against his chest with one arm. Though she identifies him as a supposedly physically weak Elder Lich, she's unable to break out of his grip no matter how hard she tries.
* SweatDrop: One of his most frequent expressions in the manga, coupled with his face being super deformed into a generic, undetailed, and very surprised skeleton skull.
* TaughtByExperience: Best demonstrated in Ainz's duel with [[spoiler:Shalltear]]. He is not usually CrazyPrepared but Ainz does know the ins and out of both the Yggdrasil system and his own class allowing him to defeat a ManOfKryptonite through superior tactics and preparation. * UnskilledButStrong: Skilled warriors who've fought "Momon" quickly note that he just swings around his sword like an ignorant child, then begin questioning how he's survived being an adventurer with such terrible abilities. He doesn't even use any Martial Skills. However, left unsaid is that he's so strong and fast that they still can't get any attacks in, which Clementine in particular finds frustrating. On the other hand, he can trade his ability to use magic temporarily in order to become a level 100 warrior. While not a match for a real warrior of his level, he does become stronger, faster ''and'' more skilled.
* UselessUsefulSpell: As a spellcaster and top-ranked player of Yggdrasil, he is actually not greatly above average in player-versus-player combat because he chose to build his character for purposes of role playing, not fighting. As a result, he mostly uses instant death spells when such abilities generally don't work against player characters, setting aside the monstrously powerful special ability granted by the Eclipse class. However, the real world doesn't have to worry about game balance, so instant death spells work just fine.
* VillainProtagonist: His lich body prevents him from having any real empathy for humans anymore, though he's kept from getting too evil by the possible consequences.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: His stated intention.
* WartsAndAll: To the whole of Nazarick, he is a godlike, invincible, ideal leader who never makes mistakes. Only the audience knows that, despite his power and despite his dampened emotions, he is at heart a regular guy who does not have any real experience at leadership [[IKnowMortalKombat aside from his YGGDRASIL guild]]. And only the audience knows that he is in reality rather weak-willed beneath his "absolute overlord" facade, in some ways ending up subordinate to his own Guardians out of his fear of not being the leader they expect him to be and his paranoia that they might betray him if that happens.
* WhatHaveIBecome: Momonga reacts whenever he notices he's ''not'' reacting like he should. Realizing he's missing emotions, no longer has a visceral reaction to human deaths, and even views them as inferior beings leaves him mildly concerned over how much his mind has changed.

The most powerful dragons in the New World. Six hundred years in the past, the Dragon Lords and their subordinates were the uncontested rulers of the planet. In modern times they've become secretive and reclusive, to the extent that some believe several no longer exist. [[spoiler:The end of the Dragon Golden Age came about after the first and second invasion of Yggdrasil MMO player characters. The first group, known as the Six Gods, taught the lesser races (humans in particular) the secrets of Yggdrasil spell casting and item making. The MMO based magic somehow corrupted the natural Wild Magic system that was native to the New World, and weakened the dragons who used it. The second group, known as the Eight Greed Kings, enacted a global conflict that resulted in the slaughter of countless dragons on the battlefield, reducing their numbers to only a few dozen of the most powerful. Despite these losses, it appears the remaining dragons (or Platinum Dragon Lord at a minimum) were successful at engineering events for these Yggdrasil visitors, and at least two separate groups afterwards, to fight among and kill themselves. Fearing the destructive power of Yggdrasil MMO player characters, they now move about in secrecy and prefer to strike against enemies from the shadows]].

In the New World, what an MMO calls experience points is actually the "life force" of a living creature converted into potential energy. Whenever one creature slays another, a portion of this "life force" is transferred to the victor, making them stronger. Defeating stronger creatures (for example a dragon) gives greater life force than defeating weaker creatures (for example a goblin). Gathering this life force makes a creature stronger... thus experience points. Therefore spells or abilities that supposedly drain experience points, are really draining souls.]]

One of the Dragon Lords, and depending on the source, their leader and the single most powerful dragon on the New World. Platinum Dragon Lord is incredibly ancient and said to predate the arrival of the Six Gods who uplifted humanity. [[spoiler:He is one of the few beings to know that the New World has been invaded by unimaginably powerful outsiders from another dimension known as Yggdrasil. Starting as far back as six hundred years ago, the actions of these creatures forever changed the New World and earned Platinum's eternal hatred.
