* DecompositeCharacter: She shares this role with Franky for [[Characters/DragonBallBulma Bulma Briefs]]: Nami takes in personality (HairTriggerTemper) and her {{Tsundere}} - like mannerism, Franky takes in eccentric appearance and mind department ([[YouGottaHaveBlueHair blue hair]], GadgeteerGenius and {{Cloudcuckoolander}}).

* FanServicePack: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in ComicBookTime, but apparently, she's just prone to growth spurts. At the ages of 18 and 20. Every other week of her life. And the [[PerverseSexualLust fans]] [[RuleThirtyFour rejoiced]].

Nami's years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, [[OnlySaneWoman though they do get on her nerves from time to time]].

* AntiHero: She starts off as a thief not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die due to her past with the Arlong Pirates. After joining officially the Straw Hats, she still has the habits to steal and has remained quite greedy.

* ArtEvolution: In the anime, her eyes have been drawn lighter since the TimeSkip, going from dark brown to near orange. Furthermore, her eyes are originally drawn uniformly brown, with the irises only visible when she's showing strong emotion. Now, the irises are visible at all times (though the manga still generally follows the pre-TimeSkip design of "uniform brown unless emotional"). Also, like all of the women from early One Piece (such as Tashigi or Vivi), Nami becomes curvier and significantly more well-endowed over time as Oda's art style evolves.

* BadassBookworm: Nami is a highly skilled navigator as well as a talented cartographer, to the point where Arlong considered her skills on par with the fishmen "superiority" since they were superior to any fish-man's. When Luffy destroys her room at Arlong Park, maps of both bathymetric and geographic nature were seen, indicating Nami has a wide variety of cartographic skills. She is capable of formulating advanced equations in mere minutes to predict a precise course of action, although she usually needs to write the equations down on a physical medium when formulating them. She has the innate ability to sense changes in the weather, and can even predict the appearance of supposedly unpredictable cyclones in the Grand Line, even when running a high fever. The movie ''Strong World'' also shows that she performs better than a crew of scientists with some advanced equipment in predicting the weather.

* BarbieDollAnatomy: Averted. The front of her breast is clearly visible as she shows {{Sideboob}} during the Whole Cake island arc, in chapter 852, while it's hard to make out (most likely on purpose due to ''One Piece'' being a Magazine/ShonenJump manga), there is a line that forms part of a nipple. The rest can't be seen part because she's filthy, and partly due to the art style.

*** In the manga, for some time the scar was still visible a bit under her new tatto the times she wore sleeveless shirts, but by the Whisky Peak arc it completely disappeared. Maybe Oda thought it was too much of a hassle to draw.

* CelibateHeroine: Her reason to not want to marry Absalom is (other than he's a creepy pervert) that she is way too young to get married and would rather go on adventures for the time being. ** At the age of ten, after Arlong murdered her adoptive mother, Belle-mère, he promised her that if she drew maps for him and collected up 100 million beries, she could buy back her village and free the villagers from his rule. She agreed, despite the fact that she could’ve escaped any time she wanted to. Even after the rest of the village ([[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim seemingly]]) shunned her for selling out to Arlong, she stuck with it, believing that she was the only one who could help her village. This caused her to develop some serious trust issues and at the beginning of the story she doesn't truly trust or rely on anyone. Although she gets along with the Straw Hats, she doesn't think of herself as a part of the crew and, after being reminded about Arlong, she betrays them and takes the ship (not without some regrets, however). It's not until she's completely desperate and begs Luffy for help that she's able to actually trust someone and consider her their friend.
** After the two year timeskip, she does not over-react, scold, or hit the crew as often for their rash actions anymore, like when she decides to take part in activities such as [[spoiler:demanding money when the crew holds Ryugu Kingdom "hostage".]] In fact she now appears quite calm in the most daunting of situations, most notably when Fake Nami held a gun to her head, implying she has become fairly confident in her abilities.

** In general, she seems to be the one who makes the day-to-day decisions of the crew, such as handling supplies. This is historically accurate, too, since real world historical pirate ships were run mostly by quartermasters, with captains usually only dictating navigation and combat.

* CryCute: Despite being a cunning and sly woman, Nami is very sensitive. Despite acting like a massive jerk for the first half of the Arlong arc, after Arlong has the treasure she amassed for ten years stolen, Nami breaks down crying, begging for help in one of the series most famous panels, emphasizing how weak she is at that point. She also cries a lot when Usopp and Luffy fight and when the former temporarily leaves the crew, and another one in Zou when she tells Luffy [[spoiler:that Sanji has been kidnapped by Capone Bege]].

* {{Greed}}: One of her main traits. If there's money to be made, count her in! She started off as treasure-obsessed, and would do nearly anything to get large amounts of money, which includes raiding a Marine's base during the confusion of an attack. This is justified a couple arcs in: She wants to use the money for the REAL Greed-monger, her then-captain, so she could buy him off and he'll leave her hometown alone.

** Nami doesn't trust Robin when she first joins, and calls Luffy, Chopper, and Sanji idiots for being easily swayed by Robin to allow her to join up despite her history with Crocodile. She then goes to tell Robin that she herself won't be as easily swayed as she doesn't trust her. However, as soon as Robin casually offers up a bag of gems, Nami does a complete 180 and gets easily swayed. She even called her [[CoolBigSis "Sis"]].

* IconicOutfit: She has 3 of them; Her very first (the white shirt and orange skirt), her Enies Lobby outfit (the [[FanService infamous]] cuttoff brown blouse and blue skirt) and her first TimeSkip outfit, the bikini top and jeans. * TheLadette: She skirts the edge of this trope. She's very feminine in her dress, cute in her mannerisms (when she wants something) and knows how to manipulate men (Sanji, not that that takes much) with her looks. On the other hand, she can out-drink Zoro, who is a bit of an alcoholic, drops the sweet talk when she isn't trying to scam you out of your money going for insults instead, and shows no fear playing hardball with men much stronger than her (even if she's just doing the negotiations, and intends to step back and let the stronger crew members do the actual beating). Of all the pirates, she probably come the closest to "raping pillaging and stealing." Zoro often comments that Sanji's attentions to her (and Robin, but whatever) are even more pathetic taking into account that Nami is more of a man than the cook himself. Even if she does like to look pretty.

* MagicStaff: Her Clima-Tact, her main weapon. [[WeatherControlMachine can even create small-scale weather effects]] which Nami is able to use very strategically. * MarsAndVenusGenderContrast: Nami proves to be an archetypal character for this trope. As the series unfolds, it's clear Nami simply doesn't get men's way of thinking, whatever it is values, attitudes, behaviors, codes, intentions, decisions or actions. Specifically, she doesn't understand the tacit communication between Luffy and Zoro (as seen in Buggy arc), is the only character who hates to be in a Wanted poster (in contrast with general cheerfulness male characters react to publications and updates of those posters) and her opinions and advices are usually disregarded in topics like adventures, honor or discipline and respect, who are important for men (like her permission for Luffy and Zoro to fight Bellamy in Jaya arc, her attempt to ruin Luffy's adventure in Skypiea and her refusal to have a campfire in Upper Yard, the whole Usopp affair in Water 7, or the "Monster Trio" accepting or supporting the "Davy Back Fight" challenge against the Fox Pirates). Even after the {{Time Skip}}, that situation doesn't change at all, as seen in [[spoiler:Punk Hazard arc]] or the [[spoiler:Whole Cake Island arc, where Nami decided to cut bonds with Sanji, only to see how Luffy, unlike her, shows totally loyal with him, overriding her decision in the process]].

* OneWomanArmy: Nami has ''more'' than earned her place as this. She was already fairly powerful, but in the climax of the Whole Cake Island Arc, she and Luffy alone were able to take down half of Big Mom's personal PraetorianGuard -- the only reason they even lost was due to the enemy having such superior numbers (and Charotte Galette [[NoSell no-selling]] her powers, without which she's just an athletic but overall weak human).

* SquishyWizard: While she is not gifted with superhuman speed, strength or toughness, in fact, she's probably the weakest (physically) character in the crew after Usopp, she's still manages to keep up in fights because her Climatact and all it's variations allow her a wide-variety of extremely versatile and powerful effects. She can emulate the powers of multiple Devil Fruits, and she can usually avoid getting hit by crafting illusions or just making herself invisible.

* TeenGenius: When we are first introduced to her, she is eighteen and knows the ins-and-outs of sailing various kinds of ships, an almost entirely instinctive knowledge of climatology and meteorology, and an incredible knack at cartography that she had been refining since she was only ten years old. Eiichiro Oda states she was the third smartest character introduced in the East Blue Saga. The other two were pirates with years of experience, one being the first-mate of one of the most powerful men in the world. So yeah, she's smart.

** While not as Chopper and Usopp, she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have. This is justified out of pragmatism than anything else, since she is completely untrained in physical combat and knows when she can't win a fight. * BadassBookworm: Nami is a highly skilled navigator as well as a talented cartographer, to the point where Arlong considered her skills on par with the fishmen "superiority" since they were superior to any fish-man's. The movie Strong World also shows that she performs better than a crew of scientists with some advanced equipment in predicting the weather.

She agreed, despite the fact that she could’ve escaped any time she wanted to. Even after the rest of the village ([[BreakTheirHeartToSaveThem seemingly]]) shunned her for selling out to Arlong, she stuck with it, believing that she was the only one who could help her village.

However, while she warmed up to pirates thanks to the Straw Hats saving her and her town from captivity, it took her a while to feel she could start trusting Fishmen in general after the devilish impression she got from the Arlong Pirates, which Hatchan found out the hard way.
* BrokenTears: After Arlong [[KickTheDog decided to go back on his word and send corrupt Marines to confiscate the money Nami stole]], Nami completely breaks down, sobbing as she stabs at the shoulder tattoo Arlong gave her and screaming at Luffy to leave her and Cocoyashi behind to no avail. [[ThisIsUnforgivable Cue Luffy and the Straw Hats]] [[CurbStompBattle opening a can of whoop-ass]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown and bulldozing Arlong's crew]].Hats' CurbStompBattle on the Arlong Pirates]].

* CerebusRetcon: Initially played straight with Nami's [[MoneyFetish greed]] and distrust of pirates. In the Arlong Park Arc, we find out her hometown was taken over by pirates and she struck a deal with the leader to buy back the town from him if she gathered enough money. Ultimately subverted, when this arc was over, Nami is still obsessed with money and treasure. Even in the flashback to Nami's past, she was stealing things before Arlong showed up. It likely has more to do with her poor background.

* ShesGotLegs: Most of her outfits pre- and post-TimeSkip consist of short skirts and shorts that emphasize her legs, so they're often the first thing people see. It helps that Creator/EiichiroOda's wife is Chiaki Inaba, the ''incredibly'' attractive actress who once played as Nami, so Oda based her character on her as a tribute. ->''"What good is treasure if I'm all alone? I'd rather have nothing at all!"''

The eighteen/[[TimeSkip twenty]]-year-old navigator of the Straw Hats, and the second of Luffy's recruits. Nami was initially introduced as a thief who detested pirates and stole from them, tagging along Luffy with dubious loyalty to him. However, it is revealed that her surrogate home, the Conomi Archipelago, was occupied by the Arlong Pirates and she only wished to buy her home back. When Luffy freed the archipelago from Arlong's grip, she fully joined the Straw Hats afterward.

Nami is an exceptional navigator, able to read the weather with perfect accuracy then give instructions to pilot the ship through any storm, and is responsible for showing the way to the next island. Although Nami isn't strong like her crewmates, she uses a weapon called the Clima-Tact, later upgraded to the Perfect Clima-Tact and currently the Sorcery Clima-Tact to manipulate the weather on a small scale, giving her a great range of tricks and attacks. Her thievery skills are also quite useful from time to time: as the crew's priorities lie more on seeking adventure than actual piracy, she also takes on the role of ship's purser, ensuring that they have enough money to purchase food and supplies for their voyages.

Nami's years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. Despite these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, [[OnlySaneWoman though they do get on her nerves from time to time]].

Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the [[FishPeople Fish-man]] pirate Arlong. She owes a great deal to the others and especially Luffy for this, and is often the only member of the crew other than Zoro to personally confront or remind him of the deep, gut-wrenching choices that he must face.

She has a bounty of 66,000,000 berries.[[note]]Her first bounty of 16,000,000 is assigned for her involvement in the Enies Lobby incident; most recently, she receives a 50,000,000 increase simply for being a member of the Straw Hats after the events of Dressrosa.[[/note]]

[[folder: # - D]]
* AccidentalTickleTorture: In the English dub only, she screams "that tickles!" when Sanji hugs her at the conclusion of the Luffy's duel with Foxy.
* ActionDressRip: During her fight with Miss Doublefinger, when she starts to become more confident in the abilities of her Clima Tact, she rips part of her robe and tears off her necklace in preparation for the fight.
* ActionGirl: [[ActionSurvivor Initially]], Nami is not a fighter but her navigator skills make her one of the most important members of the crew. Before reaching Alabasta, Nami asks Usopp to make her a weapon so she can help in combat as well, and she gains the Clima Tact, making her able to fight. After the TimeSkip, Nami's improved to become a [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]] like the rest of the crew, and then her Clima Tact is upgraded [[spoiler: with the soul of Zeus, one of Big Mom's homies who has sworn loyalty to Nami after a round of MistreatmentInducedBetrayal by Big Mom]].
* AdaptationDyeJob: Her hair is yellow-orange in the manga, but veers toward reddish-orange in the anime. The Oda-directed ''Strong World'' and ''Film Z'' notably make it purely orange, similar to the way the former lightened Robin's skin before she has become permanently light-skinned post-TimeSkip.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In the manga, Nami first appears in chapter 8, at the beginning of the Orange Town arc. In the anime, however, she makes an appearance in the very first episode, before Luffy himself.
* AlmightyJanitor: While technically her position is only the navigator, her word is law on all matters related to sailing, finance and the day-to-day management of resources, thus making her the unofficial quartermaster. At this point, even ''she's'' quite a bit stronger than her mere 66,000,000 bounty would imply thanks to the massive and dangerous upgrades she made to her Clima Tact. This is TruthInTelevision: In RealLife pirate ships, outside of battle, the quartermaster [[https://www.pirateshipvallarta.com/blog/pirate-stories/pirate-ship-quartermaster held just as much, if not more, power]] than the ship's captain.
* AntiHero: Starts off as a thief not willing to kill, but fine with putting pirates in situations where they are certain to die due to her past with the Arlong Pirates. After joining officially the Straw Hats, she still has the habits to steal and has remained quite greedy.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Usually PlayedForLaughs. With just slaps, she's one of the few characters able to render Luffy, who's made of rubber and therefore immune to most blunt attacks, a bruised and bloody mess. Creator/EiichiroOda says that it's because her blows are "emotionally and spiritually charged". This is actually ''subverted'' the first time in the manga, shortly after the [[Recap/OnePieceBuggyTheClownArc Buggy Arc]]; when she hits Luffy for being stupid, he just notes it bounces off him. So [[DoubleSubversion the next time]] she wants him to take her seriously, she [[EyeScream pokes him in the eye with a needle]]. It's tragically played seriously when she slaps [[spoiler:Sanji after he gives Luffy a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown during the former's BreakHisHeartToSaveHim gambit. It's probably the first time she actually gives up on a crewmate for real]]. Thankfully, they do make up later though once she learns his motives.
* AuthorAppeal: Oda is HappilyMarried to Chiaki Inaba, the actress who played Nami in the ''Jump Festa'' stage performances. Now Oda thinks his wife is incredibly sexy (and to be fair, she ''is'' very pretty), so he altered Nami's design so when she plays Nami in future performances he could show off her beauty to everybody...and because [[CovertPervert he really enjoys seeing his wife in the increasingly revealing outfits he comes up with]].
* BadassAdorable: She's a very cute young lady, and she knows it, but she's also far from helpless. She even sometimes lampshades it.
The movie Strong World also shows that she performs better than a crew of scientists with some advanced equipment in predicting the weather.
* BadassNormal: She has no Devil Fruit powers, but the Clima-Tact more than makes up for it.
* BaitAndSwitchComment: At the Onigashima War, Ulti promises to spare Nami if she declares that Luffy won't become King of the Pirates. Nami starts to say "Luffy will never..." but completes the sentence by saying that he'll never ''[[{{Determinator}} give up]]'' on becoming King of the Pirates.
* BareYourMidriff: A few of her outfits sport this, but her first timeskip design is the most evident case of this, since she wears only a bikini on the upper side of her body. Zou is actually the first post-TimeSkip arc in which she's not baring it, and she starts the arc with a midriff-baring outfit before exchanging clothes with Wanda.
* BathingBeauty: Gets a few of these scenes occasionally.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Double-subverted. The serious damage she receives during her more intense fights does show, but as soon as the fights are over, in any of the more minor battles, and in the long run overall, her skin is absolutely flawless.
** The most ridiculous is probably the case of her shoulder; she ''stabbed'' it repeatedly during her epic FreakOut at Arlong Park, and it left a very large and visible scar (which you can see [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/d/de/Nami_Scar.png/revision/latest?cb=20130203043820 here]], above the [[FanService fan service]]) for the remainder of the arc. As soon as the arc was over? She got a new tattoo and her scar was nowhere to be seen. But deep stab-wound scars like that, in real life, are particularly nasty and never quite heal so completely.
*** In the manga, for some time the scar was still visible a bit under her new tatto the times she wore sleeveless shirts, but by the Whisky Peak arc it completely disappeared. Maybe Oda thought it was too much of a hassle to draw.
** Averted as far as [[WildTake Wild Takes]] go: she has the most out of anyone, ''and'' the goofiest. Being the OnlySaneWoman will do that to you.
* BecomingTheMask: Initially, she had only intended to use Luffy for all he was worth before leaving. But the longer she stayed with them, the more she grew to like being part of the Straw Hats (especially compared to her experiences with Arlong). Eventually, she betrayed them and cheerfully took off with Going Merry, but once she was on her own, she [[HeroicBSOD broke down and cried]]. When the Straw Hats eventually follow her, she is visibly upset while trying to keep them out of a fight she thought they couldn't win. Like with Robin later on, Luffy continues to think of Nami as part of his crew and confronts Arlong for her sake. The final nail in this was when Luffy told Nami to watch [[NiceHat his signature straw hat]], simultaneously a sign of his trust in her and a sign he was [[LetsGetDangerous about to kick some serious butt]]. By this time she is too shaken with emotion to even move, ultimately coming to the realization she ''wants'' to be a Straw Hat, leading to her ultimate decision to leave with them after Luffy defeats Arlong.
%%* BerserkButton: There are quite a few things that can set her off.
%%** Do not spend money without consulting her first.
%%** Do not steal anything from her, especially if she stole it first.
%%** Don't call her a witch.
%%** Don't charge her outrageous fees.
%%** Don't insult her good looks.
* BlackMagicianGirl: Nami has all the trimmings of this due to her Clima-Tact: she's the weakest of the crew in a physical fight, but she's able to control weather effects as though they're magic spells being cast from a staff (with lightning being her specialty, although she's more than proficient with heat, wind, cold, water, sea clouds, and illusory techniques as well). Some of her opponents have even referred to her as a witch in response to her fighting style.
* BlowYouAway: Since she can control the weather with her Clima-Tact, she can use this to attack. It's how she defeated Miss Doublefinger.
* BorrowedCatchPhrase: When she claims to be a crossdressing man to get Zombie!Lola off her case, she uses Bon Clay's "Not joking around!"
* BreakHisHeartToSaveHim: A platonic example. In the Arlong Park arc, Nami tries to make the Straw Hats leave Cocoyashi since she's so close to paying off her debt to Arlong and buying back her town's freedom, and she doesn't want the Straw Hats to get hurt. After she finds out Arlong broke his promise [[KickTheDog and confiscated her money]], she goes through a ''heartbreaking'' HeroicBSOD, and as a last resort she screams at Luffy to go away and leave her and her town alone. What follows is a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown as the Straw Hats completely thrash the Arlong Pirates.
* BrickJoke: Zoro still owes her money for that time he borrowed some from her in Loguetown to buy some new katana.
* BrokenBird: She is shown to have been spectacularly broken as a little girl in the Arlong arc (due to the brutal murder of her adoptive mother and her years in Arlong's crew). That was until Luffy defeated Arlong that she was no longer broken.
[[ThisIsUnforgivable Cue Luffy and the Straw Hats]] [[CurbStompBattle opening a can of whoop-ass]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown and bulldozing Arlong's crew]].
* ButtMonkey: One of the rare female versions and one of the biggest '''''[[UpToEleven ever.]]''''' She's more so known as [[FieryRedhead that one chick who blows up at her crew mates idiocy]], and a {{greed}}y pirate girl, but whenever something goes wrong, ([[PlayedForLaughs which is all the damn time,]]) she'd be no better than ''[[CowardlyLion Usopp]]''. Best exemplified in the [[HalloweenEpisode Thriller Bark Arc]], where after Enies Lobby is all said and done, you would think that nothing could faze her. [[{{Bathos}} Cue the ghosts and zombies.]]
** As of the TimeSkip, this seems to be [[InvertedTrope flipped:]] When her doppelgänger pointed a gun at her ''head,'' she didn't even flinch. Yes, Nami the [[{{Greed}} greedy]] [[FieryRedHead red head]], pulled a [[TheStoic Stoic.]] That goes thrown right out the window as soon as Luffy starts doing his usual antics because she doesn't have to put on a brave face anymore (and Nami didn't fear Chocolat one bit for pretending to be her and was actually rather annoyed), but Nami can still stare daggers when the moment counts.
* CallBack: Nami gets déjà vu when she and Luffy [[spoiler:manage to get out of Big Mom's book prison by burning it, which burns them and their clothes]]. It's a call back to Little Garden, where the same happened to get out of Mr. 3's Candle Set.
* CatFight: Gets into these all the time, but her fight with Kalifa in which Nami herself is scantily clad and getting rubbed all over [[FanService by the just-as-buxom, fishnet-fond Kalifa using her]] [[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum "Slippery wet soap powers"]] takes the cake.
* CelibateHeroine: Her reason to not want to marry Absalom is (other than he's a creepy pervert) that she is way too young to get married and would rather go on adventures for the time being. While she regularly flirts with others to get what she wants, she is one of the four crew members (along with Robin, Luffy and Zoro) to never show unambiguous attraction to anyone.
* CharacterDevelopment:
** At the age of ten, after Arlong murdered her adoptive mother, Bellemere, he promised her that if she drew maps for him and collected up 100 million beries, she could buy back her village and free the villagers from his rule. She agreed, despite the fact that she could’ve escaped any time she wanted to. Even after the rest of the village ([[BreakTheirHeartToSaveThem seemingly]]) shunned her for selling out to Arlong, she stuck with it, believing that she was the only one who could help her village.
* CharacterTics: Playfully sticking her tongue out at someone she's robbed or just somehow screwed over. It also shows up fairly often in official artwork and merchandise.
* ChildProdigy: Nami was able to draw impressive maps by the time she was only ''ten''.
* ClassyCatBurglar: Nami definitely qualifies -- First, she is a master thief, being able to steal items off of her victims without them noticing. Second, her [[AnimalMotifs animal motif]] is a cat, the animal most associated with being sneaky like a thief. And thirdly, her main nickname is ''"Cat Burglar"'' Nami.
* CloseToHome: Since she spent her childhood under Arlong's abuse, harming any children is the one thing that sets her off. Nami becomes very protective when she learns of the chilrdren's experiments at Punk Hazard and, during the Onigashima War, [[spoiler:Nami zaps Ulti for harming Tama, despite having tried to run from her just a few seconds before.]]
* CombatPragmatist: She will take advantage of any moment in a fight. From feigning innocence or injury, to attacking a weak point of the enemy directly, to using a vivre card [[spoiler:which makes homies made by Big Mom respond to Nami's commands because that card is made from Big Mom]].
* CombatStilettos: She's most often seen wearing high-heeled sandals, though she doesn't fight physically.
* CompositeCharacter: Nami's design and personality (and arguably her background story as well) is the result of a long process with several other similar characters. The first apparent character in the process of developing towards Nami was Silk in ''Romance Dawn, Version 1'', who was then followed by another girl called Ann in ''Romance Dawn, Version 2''. Each one of the girls had her own personality which seemed to have been placed into Nami's overall design.
* ConfusionFu: One of the Clima-tact's abilities is to create several fake Nami illusions. It also makes her look like any one of them, meaning it's not a good idea to rely on the fact that they all look different from her.
* TheConsigliere: While all the Straw Hats can fill this role for the very [[IdiotHero dense]] Luffy, Nami is the one who most often directs him in the right direction with her advice and insight, especially in regards to navigation. Whether or not he actually follows that advice is really up to his mood, however, which is why Nami tries to avoid letting him in on making decisions that would cause the crew problems.
** In general, she seems to be the one who makes the day-to-day decisions of the crew, such as handling supplies. This is historically accurate, too, since real world historical pirate ships were run mostly by quartermasters, with captains usually only dictating navigation and combat.
* CoolSword: One of her new techniques is to create a wind sword, though she prefers creating atmospheric attacks.
* CowardlyLion:
** While not as Chopper and Usopp, she does not have the fear immunity that the rest of the crew have. This is justified out of pragmatism than anything else, since she is completely untrained in physical combat and knows when she can't win a fight. After the TimeSkip and two years of training, she's become much stronger and is no longer as cowardly, like when her doppelgänger points a gun at her head and she doesn't even flinch.
* CruelToBeKind: In the Arlong arc, she encounters a young boy who wants to kill Arlong to avenge his father. Realizing the boy doesn't stand a chance, she hits him with a staff, condescendingly tells him that Arlong doesn't have time for him and leaves him a stack of bills. Unfortunately, her point doesn't sink in until Nojiko stops the boy, explains Nami's intentions and [[QuitYourWhining tells the boy that she has no patience for those who would get themselves killed when Nami chooses to persist despite how painful things are]].
* CynicismCatalyst: The death of Belle-mère at the hands of Arlong caused Nami to hate pirates with a passion. She ultimately gets over it after Luffy defeats Arlong.
* DamselInDistress: During the Thriller Bark arc, she needs Sanji's and Lola's help to be saved from Absalom. Justified, since she has been narcotized. Once she wakes up, [[DamselOutOfDistress she deals with Absalom by shocking him with a thunderbolt.]]
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: She wears short skirts two times in canon. The first was [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/b/bf/Nami%27s_First_Outfit_Water_7_Arc.png/revision/latest?cb=20130927194940 in the Water 7 arc]], when she didn't fight at all. The second was [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/6/6a/Nami_Enies_Lobby.png/revision/latest?cb=20130509032406 in the Enies Lobby arc]], where she more than proved her worth as an ActionGirl. Her battle outfit in ''Film Z'' has one as well, though in that case it's partially justified: since she was turned into a kid, her outfit is child-sized, and thus looked a lot shorter when she returned to normal.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Nami had one of the worst upbringings among her crew. Her parents were killed in a war when she was a baby, and she and another girl, Nojiko, were ''de facto'' adopted by Belle-mère, a wild child-turned-Marine-turned-tangerine farmer, who brought them home. When Nami was 10, Belle-mère was murdered by Arlong when she used all the money she had to pay for the lives of her children instead of herself (she didn't even have to, since they weren't registered). She was then conscripted into Arlong's pirates for her mapmaking skills, then dicked around for a 100-million berry bounty on the town's freedom that Arlong never intended to allow her to pay.
* ADayInTheLimelight: The special "Episode of Nami" TV Special that aired between episodes 560 and 561. A retelling of the Arlong Park Arc. Actually post TimeSkip Nami reminiscing while on their way to Fish-man Island.
* DeadpanSnarker: In the Funimation dub. Luci Christian clearly enjoys making Nami as wry as possible.
* DefiantToTheEnd:[[spoiler: During the Wano Arc, after being beaten bloody by Tobi Roppo member [[HairTriggerTemper Ulti]], Ulti demands that Nami admit Luffy will never become Pirate King. Even knowing that she's only one of Ulti's [[HeadbuttingPachy headbutts]] away from death, Nami refuses and declares through tears that Luffy will definitely become Pirate King.]]
* DefrostingIceQueen: At first, she claims to only want to work with the crew to accomplish her goals, and maintains that for a little while before she eventually betrays them to steal their money during Arlong's last days in the East Blue. But by that time, she had grown so comfortable with them that she didn't want to leave; even her own sister remarked that it had been a long time since she had seen Nami so emotional.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: She will often go barefoot when relaxing and her usual choice of footwear exposes a good amount of her feet.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: According to [[WordOfGod Oda]], she hates orangeades (chocolate-coated oranges) and prefers the actual fruit.
* DopeSlap: Or rather, "Dope Punch". She applied it liberally whenever her crewmates (usually [[IdiotHero Luffy]]) act very stupid. She mellows out on it after the TimeSkip, though.
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: She beats her crewmates up very often, but never do said crewmates respond in kind. She does lessen on the beatings after the TimeSkip, though.
* DudeMagnet:[[WordOfGod Oda]] comments that Nami and Robin are considered very beautiful women InUniverse, and indeed many men are shown attracted to her, such as Sanji, who constantly flirts with her. Nami herself exploits her attractiveness as much as she can. Unfortunately, she ends up gaining the interest of [[InvisibleJerkass Absalom]], who even attempts to marry her via force. In the Wano arc, Nami shows her naked body to distract the enemies, and ends up distracting [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer many women as well]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:E - L]]
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: By the time of Wano arc, a glimpse of her naked body after a WardrobeMalfunction has even some women among the crowd nosebleed with hearts in their eyes. Also, in ''One Piece novel: HEROINES'', shop employee Miucha cannot help but admire and praise Nami's beauty.
* EverybodyKnewAlready: She asked Nojiko to keep her efforts to buy her village back from Arlong a secret, even after Genzo had her banished from the village for joining Arlong Pirates, knowing that the villagers struggled to pay the tribute. It turns out that Genzo, unwilling to believe she'd join the pirates willingly, got Nojiko to tell him the truth, but decided to keep it a secret from Nami so she could run away if she was unable to go on.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** As greedy as she is, she's willing to give up treasure for the sake of her friends, such as giving some of Thriller Bark's treasure to her friend Lola as a gift, or being willing to spend all the treasure to buy Caimie and set her free (unfortunately, she gets preemptively outbid).
** She'll gladly take and steal money, but the idea of being bought [[BerserkButton really angers her]].
** When it comes to children, especially orphans or kidnapping victims, she will fight hard to protect them and keep them safe.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: She grows her hair out during the TimeSkip.
* FanServicePack: Over the course of a few hundred chapters/episodes, Nami's physique changed greatly. Her breasts have gradually increased in size, from modest B's to full-blown F's. It's enough to make you think that the story hasn't been in ComicBookTime, but apparently she's just prone to growth spurts. At the ages of 18 and 20. Every other week of her life. And the [[PerverseSexualLust fans]] [[RuleThirtyFour rejoiced]].
** Well, technically G-cup to I-cup to J-cup, according to Eiichiro Oda, but the same logic applies. (note that Japanese bra cup sizes scale differently than American ones; translated, her breast size is still absurd, but not impossible)
** And keep in mind, this is the same universe where pathetic-looking runts (Coby) turn into outright [[{{Bishonen}} bishonens]] in less than a year (albeit with training), and where ordinary-sized children grow into 22-foot-tall monstrosities (Moriah). And both are human.
* FieryRedhead: One of the more [[{{Tsundere}} emotional]] members of the crew. "True to her looks, she's so bold!"
* FireIceLightning: The [[WeatherControlMachine Clima-Tact's]] most basic function is to create three types of air bubbles named the Heat Ball, Cool Ball, and Thunder Ball. It used to be a slight subversion in that with the first version of the Clima-Tact, the Heat and Cool Balls were useless as attacks, and tended to be used for weather manipulation only. Once it got upgraded, the Heat and Cool Balls became strong enough to inflict damage to enemies (albeit relatively minor damage) in their base form.
* FlowerMotifs: According to Yuriko Yamaguchi (Robin's voice actress), Nami's flower is the sunflower, which are Chinese symbols of vitality and intelligence. She is a beautiful woman and, as stated by Oda, one of few people who are the most intelligent in ''One Piece'' (the other being Benn Beckam, Shank's First Mate).
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: The rash, thieving Foolish to Nojiko's level-headed, straight-lace Responsible. To top it off, [[RedOniBlueOni Nami has red-orange hair while Nojiko has blue hair]].
* ForcedToWatch: She and Nojiko are forced to watch Arlong kill Belle-mère before their eyes.
* FormerBigot: Nami used to be a TragicBigot towards fishmen because they were heavily involved in her DarkAndTroubledPast. But after hearing the story of the slavery of fishmen from Hatchan and later, the story of Jimbei's late boss Fisher Tiger and late mermaid queen Otohime who fought for fishmen's rights in different ways, she has a change of heart and she renounces all of her hate towards fishmen, except for those who really did bad things.
* FormFittingWardrobe: She wears tight clothes every now and then, but mostly in the anime, which likes to exaggerate the original designs. Take [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/File:Nami%27s_Zou_Departure_Outfit.png this polo shirt]], for example.
* FreudianExcuse: Nami's kleptomania was largely due to growing up with a poor tangerine farmer for a mother, and not having enough for things like books.
* FriendToAllChildren: Despite her many AntiHero tendencies, Nami has a soft spot for kids. Probably due to her background as an orphan.
* {{Gainaxing}}: In the 7th movie, sometimes they bounce wildly when she moves very little.
** It's also the case in the 12th movie. Though you could argue this is compensating for the fact that she spends most of the movie as a kid.
* GiverOfLameNames: It doesn't come up often, but she tends to simply name things after a characteristic. She named the camel and crab in Alabasta "Eyelashes" and "Pincers", respectively. When Oda was asked what the other Straw Hats would have named [[spoiler:Sanji's superhero persona]], Nami's choice was [[spoiler:"Cape"]]. When Zeus tells her to give him a new name after [[spoiler:he joins their side completely due to Big Mom trying to kill him]], she goes with the name "Fluff", leading Zeus to go back on this and continue going by his original name.
* GlassCannon: Starting with the Enies Lobby arc, Nami's clima-tact becomes a weapon of mass destruction. Releasing powerful storm AOE the very few can stand against. That said Nami herself is a normal human and if the enemy can get to her they rarely have a hard time subduing her.
** Ever since the Whole Cake Island arc, now that Nami [[spoiler: has obtained Zeus, she has an ''Emperor-class attack'' in her arsenal. As a result, in terms of offensive-power capabilities alone, Nami is now one of, if not ''the'' strongest of the Straw Hat Pirates. As of Wano, Zeus has seemingly lost most of his power, but now possesses the Sorcery Clima-Tact, turning it into a MorphWeapon and allowing Zeus to temporarily take over clouds emitted by the Clima-Tact. This lets him attack on his own as well as control the direction of her lightning attacks to ensure they hit the target]].
* GoGoEnslavement: In the Thriller Bark arc, she is captured by the creepy perverted Absalom that wants her as a wife and therefore wakes up in a gorgeous wedding dress. This temporarily distracts both Sanji and her would-be husband as they admire her (while she's still unconscious).
* {{Greed}}: One of her main traits. If there's money to be made, count her in!
* GuileHero: "Heroine" in her case. To compensate for her lack of Devil Fruit powers (Robin, Brook, Chopper), [[{{Cyborg}} technological enhancements]] (Franky), and [[LightningBruiser monstrous physical/Haki skills]] (Luffy, Zoro, Sanji), her usual approach is the tactical one; when she first meets Luffy, she calls him [[HilariousInHindsight "Boss"]] to [[LetsYouAndHimFight get the guys chasing her off her tail]]. In the Totto Land arc, she manages to defeat [[BadBoss Charlotte Cracker]] this way - [[spoiler:using her Clima-Tact to soften up his Biscuit Soldiers so Luffy can eat through Cracker's defenses and gain a more powerful form]]
* HappilyAdopted: After losing their parents in a war, she and her non-blood sister Nojiko were taken in and raised by Belle-mère, who was a good mother to them both. [[CynicismCatalyst Then Arlong had to kill her in front of her daughters]]...
* HeroicBSOD: Two:
** As a child, she goes into a brief one when Arlong murders Belle-mère.
** In the Arlong arc, Nami goes into a major one when Arlong steals her fortune to buy her village's freedom and turns on her. She collapses in front of Luffy and starts crying BrokenTears, stabbing at the shoulder where Arlong tattooed her and screaming at Luffy for his crew to leave her and her town alone. She seemed intent on giving up on escaping pirate captivity altogether but Luffy snaps her out of it.
* HowDoIShotWeb: When she first got her Clima-tact, she had no idea what it would do, and spent some time doing party tricks built into it by Usopp.
* HypocriticalHumor:
** Nami likes to charge her crewmates for ridiculous reasons, but when one of them tries to do the same to her, she runs off.
* IconicOutfit: She has 3 of them; Her very first (the white shirt and orange skirt), her Enies Lobby outfit (the [[FanService infamous]] cuttoff brown blouse and blue skirt) and her first TimeSkip outfit, the bikini top and jeans. She's also always seen wearing a Log Pose on her wrist like a watch.
* IJustWantToBeFree: At the beginning of the story, Nami is forced to work under the Arlong Pirates and draw maps for Arlong. Only the deal to buy her village back convinces her to stand her sufferings, and she tries really hard to steal money for that deal. She is totally heartbroken when she finds that Arlong never intended to set her free and has all of her money stolen. Luffy defeating Arlong and freeing her is what seals her alliance with the Straw Hats.
-->''"I just want to get free soon, [[MissingMom Belle-mere]]..."''
* IWasQuiteALooker: In the 92nd SBS, Oda draws two possible outcomes of Nami at age 40 and age 60. In the bottom path where [[NoodleIncident "something" happens]], age ravages Nami into a heavy set, heavily wrinkled crone. If this mysterious something doesn't happen, the top path shows her to be a SilverFox.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: While Eiichiro Oda did state there will not be any romance in the series, it's worth noting that the baby that Luffy is holding (in a, granted non-canon, page) that represents Oda's daughter looks like Nami.
* ImpossibleHourglassFigure: While initially she's just a NoodlePeople, from the Alabasta arc it's body has "developed" enough to be visible andit's much more defined after the TimeSkip.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Emphasizing the "Jerk", at first. She can be selfish, manipulating [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and rude]], but there's no doubt she cares about her friends. She gradually [[TookALevelInKindness outgrows this behavior]] [[CharacterDevelopment over the course]] of the series. By the time the TimeSkip rolls around, she rarely acts like a jerk anymore (towards her friends, at least) unless they're asking for it.
* JoinOrDie: [[spoiler:She tells Zeus she'll kill him if he won't serve her. He's later seen to be content as her new servant, and then becomes her partner after Big Mom tries to feed him to her new cloud Homie and his soul possesses the Sorcery Clima-Tact]].
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAkJBs7il2U Nami Eyecatcher.]]
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Usually the light to Robin's dark. Can be zigzagged though, as while Nami is more bubbly and girly than Robin, she is much less [[ProperLady ladylike]], and she even has her moments where she is cold and aloof while Robin shows curiosity and childish imagination.
* LittleMissBadass: In the twelfth movie, after [[FountainOfYouth she was temporarily turned into a kid]] by Ain. She was also this when she actually was a kid; she started tricking and stealing from pirates at merely 10 years old.
* LittleMissConArtist: She takes advantage of that to trick some Marine soldiers into giving her info about Z.
* LivingWeapon: [[spoiler:The Sorcery Clima-Tact gains a life of its own when Zeus' soul possesses it and turns it into a Homie.]]
* LongHairIsFeminine: Nami has very feminine features, which are enhanced in her Post-TimeSkip appearance, which gives her longer hair.
* LovableRogue: While not a villain, Nami is known for being a thief, but she's still a lovable person.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:M - S]]
* MadeOfIron: Although Nami is a normal human, on paper, she occasionally takes direct superhuman blows and continues fighting. Most notably, Nami tanks a headbutt from Ulti and survives, although she notes another would be the end.
* MagicStaff: Her Clima-Tact, her main weapon. [[WeatherControlMachine can even create small-scale weather effects]] which Nami is able to use very strategically. After the time-skip the weather effects are not so small anymore. Ironically, Usopp only designed it as a staff with magic tricks for entertainment during parties.
* MamaBear: When faced with the imprisoned children of Punk Hazard begging to be taken back to their families, the rest of the crew (Sanji in particular) remain indifferent to their plight (though Chopper and Franky did want to go back too, they considered it too reckless). Nami however, is the ''first'' to take a stand for them, and her fervor in protecting Caesar Clown's young victims eventually inspires and awakens the dormant conscience of her friends. She's also this to her friends. Considering her [[MissingMom backstory]], it's very understandable.
-->'''Sanji:''' Hey, what the hell do you mean, Nami? They're not our problem! We're not Samaritans who go around saving people!\\
'''Nami:''' I know we're not! But when little kids are begging and crying for you to help them, you CAN'T just leave them and do nothing!
* MarkOfShame: She initially has a tattoo of the Arlong Pirates' Jolly Roger on her left shoulder, which marks her as being little more than Arlong's slave. During her FreakOut, she stabs at it with a knife in an attempt to deface it, and she later has it covered over with a tangerine and pinwheel pattern in tribute to [[GoodParents Belle-mère]] and [[ParentalSubstitute Genzo]].
* MeaningfulName: Her name means "wave", and she is, after all, a navigator on a ship...
* MetaGirl: Spends a lot of her early appearances reacting to Luffy and Zoro's inhuman abilities. Almost everyone falls into this role when introduced to the wackiness of the Straw Hat Crew, but the more human members (like Nami) keep it up longer. Like most of the other characters, she now reacts to how strange the people that the Straw Hats meet are instead.
* MissingMom: [[ParentalSubstitute Bellemere]] died saving her and her adoptive sister by being shot by Arlong himself. [[ForcedtoWatch Nami saw the whole thing]]. Her birth mom, on the other hand, is likely a casualty of war.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: In the Arlong Park arc, Nami becomes fed up with Arlong thanks to years of being forced to draw maps and having the crap beaten out of her. After Arlong has Nezumi steal her treasure and destroy Belle-Mère tangerine orchard, she decides to side with the Straw Hats and watch Luffy take down Arlong.
* MoneyFetish: She's such a classic case that she's the current image for that page. See [[MrViceGuy Ms. Vice Girl]] below.
* MorphWeapon: [[spoiler: Due to Zeus' soul possessing the Sorcery Clima-tact and turning it into a Homie, the orange appendages of Nami's Clima-Tact can extend and transform into more offensive forms (such as a mace).]]
* MsFanservice: Most conventional in the world, as she's… stacked, [[{{Gainaxing}} bouncy]], [[TheTease flirtatious]], and [[BareYourMidriff rarely covers her stomach]]. After the time skip we have… [[WalkingSwimsuitScene bikini top]], low-riding pants that expose her hips and upper crotch-lines, high heels, and [[LongHairIsFeminine much longer and free-flowing hair]]. Taken up to eleven in the "Glorious Island" movie tie-in; most of the focus is on Nami bouncing around in a tiny bikini, with her breasts larger than ever before. Her wardrobe seems to shrink for each story arc as she's down to the bikini top and [[WhoWearsShortShorts short shorts]] in the Dressrosa storyline.
* MsViceGirl: She is obsessed with money and often cons other characters (including her own crewmates) out of their hard-earned cash. Despite this, her good qualities still outweigh her greed. In the Arlong Park arc, it's shown exactly why she's so fixated on getting rich. The habit doesn't exactly die after the fact, but she slowly gets better about it, at least.
* MundaneUtility: Inverted. Nami asks Usopp to make her a weapon so that she can participate in battles like the rest of the crew and Usopp makes her the Clima-Tact. In his instructions, Usopp reveals he designed it with magic tricks to entertain during the parties but Nami is able to use them in combat. Completely averted after she improves the Clima-Tact to give it new combat tricks.
* TheNavigator: Her role in the crew. She's good at drawing maps, and has an innate gift to detect extremely subtle changes in the weather that foreshadow storms, making her a very valuable navigator. This also means she has the highest authority when the crew is travelling from island to island.
* NeverGetsDrunk: Nami can hold her liquor just fine. She out-drinks fifteen people and goes on like it was nothing. She may even be better than Zoro, as she actually outdrank more than him, and although she had to fake passing out to trick her enemies' attention in Whiskey Peak, she said she could go on even longer. She actually does get a little tipsy in the Fish-Man Island arc, but not outright drunk.
* NiceShoes: As a thief, she went with practical and rather plain boots, but when she put that life behind her, she traded them for a preference toward wearing glamorous-looking high-heeled sandals, a holdover from her days of wearing sandals in a tropical environment growing up, along with her adoptive mother and sister and practically the rest of the islanders. However, she'll mix it up every so often with some other fancy footwear, including boots.
* {{Ninja}}: To blend into Wano, Kin'emon gives her a ninja outfit and Nami calls him out for having made it too fanservicey. During the arc, she infiltrates with Shinobu, a real kunoichi, in Orochi's castle to gather information.
* NotDrawnToScale: Nami is officially 5'7", even shorter than Luffy, which is saying a lot in this series. Despite this, she is usually drawn [[NoodlePeople with very long legs and an oblong, slim body]] so that she looks like a StatuesqueStunner. In some panels, she is correctly drawn shorter than Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji (or same height/slightly taller if she is wearing heels), but in other panels she seems to tower over them and is almost the same height as Robin.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Gets her fair share of this. She can be just as goofy as the rest of the crew.
** She sometimes uses Luffy's off-the-wall nicknames for people, i.e. "Weird Knight" for Gan Fall and "Tra-guy" for Trafalgar Law.
** Not to mention her ButtMonkey status. [[Creator/EiichiroOda Oda]] had a field day with Thriller Bark.
* OnlyOneName: Although several other characters, including some of the Straw Hats, also count, she's especially notable in that she ''literally'' has only one name. Being orphaned when she was a baby, it was her adoptive mom Bellemere who named her Nami, and her surname has been lost to history, as has her birth-given name. Belle-mère also had only one name, so no adoptive surname exists for her, either.
* OnlySaneWoman: Has bemoaned how their crew always seems to attract the weird ones. She actually ''cries tears of joy'' when [[TheStoic Robin]] joins.
* OnlyTheChosenMayWield: Nami's knowledge of weather as well as her innate instincts allow her to use the Clima-Tact to the best of its ability. Even Usopp, who created it, [[NotTheIntendedUse is flabbergasted at what Nami is capable of with it]].
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** [[spoiler:Her running into Luffy's arms and crying over Sanji's fate in Zou proves that the situation is serious.]]
** If Nami decides to cook, she'll charge anyone who wants to eat. [[spoiler:In the Whole Cake Island Arc, when Luffy's [[LethalChef cooking skills]] deplete the Straw Hats' entire food supply and blows a hole in the roof of the kitchen, she decides to cook for free so it won't happen again (because she knows the consequences of letting him have free of reign of it again), earning a BigWhat from Luffy.]]
** Normally, Nami reacts very loudly and expressively to imminent threats or things that scare her. [[spoiler:However, when stuck with nowhere to go on the Sunny and with Big Mom about to drop an ''enormous'' tsunami over their heads, she quietly and calmly apologizes to Luffy over the "phone" (not really; long story short, [[ItMakesSenseInContext it's a mirror shard that acts like facetime]]) and simply says that she thinks they're done for while tearing up a bit. It seems that she ''actually'' believes they're about to die this time, and it's utterly heartbreaking]].
* OutOfFocus: Her dream as a child was to draw maps of all places she visited, and eventually a World Map itself; Arlong made her dream a nightmare, but when Nami parted ways with her village to join Luffy's crew, she expressed again her dream to draw maps; since then however, Nami isn't seen drawing maps of any kind – though one may assume that she's doing so ''off-screen'', because the map-making in itself (as opposed to achieving the goal of a ''complete'' World Map) is not necessary to move the plot forward. That said, she can be seen drawing maps in anime filler multiple times, as well as some of the openings and endings.
** [[spoiler:With the reveal of the Road Poneglyphs Nami's cartography skills may prove crucial to reaching Raftel and the titular Franchise/OnePiece.]]
** She, Chopper, Sanji, and Brook during the second half of the Dressrosa Arc. They were absent from the story for more than a year and a half in the real world before reappearing (from December 2013 to July 2015).
* ParentalAbandonment: Nami's birth parents were never seen, but her and Nojiko being the only survivors of their hometown leaves no doubt about their parents' fate.
* PersonaNonGrata: When Nami returned to her village the day after Bellemere's murder, supposedly having joined the Arlong Pirates for money, Genzo demanded that she never set foot in the village. Subverted after Genzo learned the real reason behind her actions. He allowed her to pass through the town to reach her childhood home, but didn't say anything to her [[CruelToBeKind to prevent her from realizing that the other townspeople knew about her quest to buy the village from Arlong, so that she could give up if it got too difficult for her.]]
* PhantomThief: Nami can steal practically anything without anyone noticing (as seen in the Drum arc). However, she prefers to brag.
* PirateGirl: She wasn't ''at all'' proud to work with Luffy at the start of the series due to watching a pirate kill her mother and being enslaved by that same pirate at the start of the series. Thanks to Luffy intervening, however, she now embraces her role as a pirate, as it has brought her many great friends and ''lots'' of [[MoneyFetish money]].
* ProtectiveCharm: The Vivre Card that Lola gave Nami in Thriller Bark arc [[ChekhovsGun turns out to be this]] in the Totto Land arc. [[spoiler:Lola says that it's actually her mother's card - that is, Big Mom's, who ate the Soul-Soul Fruit; as Vivre Cards are representations of someone's soul, Big Mom's naturally have a profound effect when it comes to the "[[AnimateInanimateObject Homies]]" animated by Big Mom putting people's souls into them. Namely, they don't want to attack Nami because they feel Big Mom's aura around her.]]
* ProudBeauty: She's attractive, she knows it, and knows how to use it to her advantage.
* RedOniBlueOni: When compared to Robin, she's far more likely to raise her voice and express emotions (anger and frustration, but occasionally sorrow) or otherwise breakdown. Also, compare the visual aesthetic of the FieryRedhead Nami to the AloofDarkHairedGirl Robin.
* SandInMyEyes: When she's captured at Weatheria and put in jail for trying to steal meteorological equipment, she reads about Ace's death in the newspaper and breaks down crying, causing her captors to freak out and release her. She quickly reveals that it was just an act, and she makes off with the equipment she stole, along with one of the meteorologists, who notes that she still hasn't stopped crying.
* ScienceHero: Meteorological science, to be exact.
* ScreamingWoman: Though it's more so because she's only one (other than Usopp) perceptive enough to realize just how bad things are, Nami's shrieks of terror are a regular occurrence.
* SelfHarm: During Arlong's final days in the East Blue, after a [[DirtyCop corrupt Marine]] in league with Arlong "confiscates" the ransom money Nami had spent eight years collecting on his orders, Nami freaks out and starts repeatedly stabbing the Arlong tattoo on her arm with a knife, not stopping until Luffy makes her do so.
* SexyBacklessOutfit: She's given a fancy, backless dress as a thank-you present from Wanda for helping save the country of Zou. [[ChivalrousPervert Sanji]] was visibly pleased with it... which, in short, helped earn him a MegatonPunch.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She isn't ashamed to show her body to others as long as they pay her afterwards. She even flashes people with her naked body just so she could charge them with money for seeing it in the Alabasta arc.
Her legs are PlayedForLaughs in the gag comic "Mugiwara Theatre - Red-Hair of Class 3-Sea Time", where she's depicted as a school bully who would wear a DangerouslyShortSkirt and charge anyone who saw her legs 100,000 belli.
* ShipperOnDeck: Played with. Nami tells zombie Lola that she thinks zombie Lola and Absalom would make a nice couple, but she [[BlatantLies actually doesn't believe it in the slightest.]]
* ShockStick: Her Perfect Clima Tact, essentially a super-taser on a stick, can create lightning strikes and other electrical discharges under the right conditions. It has other weather related functions, as well.
** After the TimeSkip, she gets a substantial upgrade in the form of the Sorcery Clima Tact. She can now produce electricity that visually looks about as powerful as [[PsychoElectro Enel's]] 30,000,000 volt vari, which is a huge upgrade.
** After the Whole Cake Island Arc [[spoiler:Zeus, one of Big Mom's special Homies able to unleash powerful thunderbolts, is now living in her Clima Tact]].
* ShouldntYouStopStealing: For some time after her reason for stealing (i.e freeing her village) ceases, she still keeps her stealing habit.
* ShowSomeLeg: Nami tends to use her charm in this form to her advantage.
* SilverFox: In the volume 92 SBS, Oda drew Nami as she would appear at age 40 and age 60 with two likely outcomes. The top images show that she [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/d/de/SBS_92_Nami.png/revision/latest?cb=20190305213058 would be as lovely as ever]]. The bottom pictures where [[NoodleIncident "something" happens]] leave her fat and ugly.
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: She brings this very trope into question during the Davy Back Fight, believing she'll be the one picked to leave the crew because of how attractive she is.
* SoleSurvivor: Along with Nojiko, who was a toddler at the time, they're the only survivors from their initial hometown after a pirate attack.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: While she's not a powerhouse like most of her crewmates, she's ''much'' stronger than she looks; Sanji actually proved that she's strong enough to knock out a large shark with one kick while he was trapped in her body from a FreakyFridayFlip. Furthermore, her leg muscles are also strong enough to sustain his Blue Walk technique for several seconds.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Just before the crew entered the Grand Line, Oda was asked who had the highest and lowest IQ of all the characters introduced so far; he replied that Shanks's first mate, Benn Beckman, and Nami were the smartest (in that order), but he couldn't decide which characters were the dumbest because almost every other character is an idiot or a [[CloudCuckooLander space case]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T - Z]]
* TattooedCrook: This is very important to her backstory. She has a black tattoo (blue in the anime) on her left shoulder, which represents tangerines and pinwheels (a homage to [[GoodParents Belle-mère]] & [[CoolBigSis Nojiko,]] and [[ParentalSubstitute Genzo,]] respectively), where she used to have a tattoo for being a member of Arlong's crew.
* TheTease: She flirts with random villains to get information or to provide a distraction. Though as the show is NoHuggingNoKissing, her flirtations are rarely more than a wink and some tame compliments of the mark.
* TelescopingStaff: After the events of the Zou arc, Ussop upgrades her staff with his Pop Greens, allowing it to extend to great lengths just by putting pressure on the handle.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Used this on Sanji [[spoiler:to verbally wound him for being a FakeDefector in the Whole Cake Island arc]].
* TokenHuman: She was the only human member of the Arlong Pirates.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl:
** She is the Tomboy to Vivi's Girly Girl, though it's all relative as neither is very tomboyish or girly (Vivi's girliness came out once she returned to Alabasta).
** Also the more [[HotBlooded passionate]] and [[{{Tomboy}} headstrong]] of the two ladies aboard the Thousand Sunny, although her hobbies are much more girly than Robin's, which are just... [[NightmareFetishist ''weird'']].
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Although she's mostly an unabashed, aggressive tomboy, Nami still loves shopping and dressing up.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Nami's childhood flashback showed she was completely inept in stealing. As an adult, she is now at {{Kaitou}}-level when it comes to performing thefts.
** Every time she gets a new Clima Tact (i.e. in Alabasta, Enies Lobby, and after the timeskip), but special mention needs to go to her after the timeskip, where she electrocutes ''a whole bar'', takes down Fish-Man soldiers (who are 10 times stronger than normal humans, mind you) like they were nothing, and displays the ability to make herself invisible with mirages to steal a very important document from Fishmen on power-increasing steroids. Also, she is far less of a coward than before: for example, she doesn't even flinch when having a gun pointed against her temple.
** Post-Whole Cake Island arc [[spoiler:Nami now has Zeus living in her Clima Tact, making it much more powerful. Feeding it some Black Balls and a Weather Egg allows it to unleash an enormous thunderbolt which was thought to be unleashed by Big Mom herself to annihilate the Straw Hats]].
* TookALevelInIdealism: She used to be a shameless ClassyCatBurglar with a visceral hatred for all pirates as a result of a very traumatic childhood, where she was exploited by the pirate who killed her mother. After seeing the lengths to which Luffy, a young pirate, goes to protect and avenge her, she learns to trust the world again.
* TookALevelInKindness: This trope happens slowly as the series has gone on, but particularly after the timeskip. From forgiving Hachi, [[spoiler:to hugging Usopp and Chopper when they reunite, to even immediately forgiving Jimbei for letting Arlong loose on East Blue,]] she's come a pretty long way from the "mean woman" act she started out with.
** Not to mention, she hits her crewmates far less often after the timeskip.
** Even before the timeskip she showed signs of this. When Robin was rescued and returned to the crew during Enies Lobby, Nami's immediate reaction was to {{glomp}} her.
* TragicBigot: Downplayed. Her experience with the Arlong Pirates left her not outright racist, but with the impression that all Fishmen are violent and oppressive toward humans, which made her initially reluctant to go to Fish-Man Island. Then the Saboady Archipelago arc shows her that Fishmen actually suffer far more prejudice from humans than vice versa, and Hachi, one of the less malevolent members of the Arlong Pirates, pulls a HeelFaceTurn.
* {{Tsundere}}: Gets pissed at the idiotic nature of her crew despite being very close to them; [[OnlySaneWoman completely]] [[SurroundedByIdiots understandable]], of course.
* {{Underboobs}}: Episode 560 conspicuously shrinks her bikini top to show them off.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Both Ms. Doublefinger and Kalifa don't take their fights with her very seriously until Nami starts to show that she's a capable fighter. Naturally it proves to be their undoing.
* UnknownRival: Toward zombie Lola, who is jealous that Absalom has made her his bride. This is quickly solved, with Nami explaining the feelings aren't mutual ''at all''.
* UseYourHead: In episode 239, in the anime only, Nami escapes from a man holding her by headbutting him.
* VictoriasSecretCompartment: Where she can keep several things, depending on the situation. Oda even jokingly calls it "the hidden Nami valley"!
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Post TimeSkip, until the Zou arc, her outfits almost always included a bikini top. Kin'emon initially believes that she's been stripped (not that he's really complaining).
* WaterIsWomanly: Nami has a water motif: her name means "wave" in Japanese, she's the navigator of the Straw Hats' ship, wears a bikini top after the time skip, and can control the weather with her Clima-Tact. She's quite feminine, having cute mannerisms, a compassion for children, and pride in her good looks, and is one of the only two women in the Straw Hat Pirates with a tendency to reel in the more rambunctious male members of her crew.
* WeakButSkilled: Her knowledge of the weather and her tools have gotten her out of tight spots more than once. Note the "weak" here is only in correlation to her crew, the strongest of whom can ''punch an entire city into two''.
* WeaponOfChoice: Her [[WeatherControlMachine Clima Tact and later Perfect Clima Tact]]. Even later, the Sorcery Clima Tact. Before those she used a normal wooden quarterstaff.
* WeatherControlMachine: Her Clima Tact, to an extent.
* WhoWearsShortShorts: Quite a few of her [[TheFashionista many, many,]] ''many'' different outfits feature a pair of these.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She can't ''stand'' spiders or insects. When trying to get the South Bird, she understandably has an OhCrap moment when she sees them.
* WildTake: While hers aren't as often or expressive as [[CowardlyLion Usopp's]], there's only two situations that make her do this - 1) when she's scared, and 2) when her crewmates are being idiots.
* WingdingEyes: Whenever anything related to cash is mentioned.
* WomenAreWiser: Along with Robin, she often has to express common sense since few of her male crewmembers, especially her captain Luffy, possess it. On the other hand, Nami has her own blind spots (such as the promise of wealth) and has to be reeled in by the others in turn.
* WouldHurtAChild:
** Whacks a young boy who's seeking {{revenge}} against Arlong on the head [[CruelToBeKind in order to prevent him from getting himself killed]].
** [[AvertedTrope Averted]] in the Punk Hazard Arc were Nami refuses to harm the enlarged children when they are suffering from withdrawal symptoms that causes them to fly into a raging fit and attack everyone, even preventing Luffy from striking them.
* XRaySparks: Commonly happens to her enemies after she hits them with a thunderbolt tempo.
* YouAreNotAlone: Upon learning Arlong backstabbed her and stole her fortune she would have used to buy her village's freedom, she starts crying and begs Luffy for help. He simply puts his hat on her head and moves Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp to attack Arlong for making her cry.
* YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious: Nami usually refers to Sanji as "Sanji-kun" as a term of endearment. [[spoiler: After Sanji tries to protect both her and Luffy from being killed by his family and Big Mom, Nami (who's unaware of his true reasons) slaps him and disowns him while calling him "Sanji". Afterwards, Sanji cries for having hurt Nami's feelings]].
* YouKilledMyMother: Her hatred over Arlong is because the pirate murdered her foster mother, Belle-mère.
