* BoringButPractical: As what few victims that survive it can attest, getting shot by a powerful rifle from faraway by an unerring marksman is hard to counter unless you have a Logia ability or some other skill that lets you sense and subsequently defend yourself against the bullet.

* BeardOfEvil: Sports a goatee after the timeskip.

* MusclesAreMeaningless: San Juan Wolf is a giant who can walk across the oceans without struggle but Garp, who's roughly the size of a normal himan sends him flying into the ocean.

* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: He throws buildings around like sandbags in his crew's battle with Ace and doesn't have a Devil Fruit power, only his natural strength. [[spoiler:After the events of Dressrosa, he eats the Strong-Strong Fruit, augmenting his own power via the fruit's supernatural strength.]]

* SuperStrength: Burgess is the physically strongest of the Titanic Captains, being strong enough to chuck buildings around on his own. [[spoiler:He gets even stronger after acquiring the Strong-Strong Fruit, as he's able to lift and throw a ''mountain'']].

* EvilCounterpart: To Zoro. Note his swordsmanship, being put on death row prior to joining Blackbeard, and calling Blackbeard out after Magellan's crushing attack. The fact that he used to be a jailer nicely parallels Zoro's past as a pirate hunter, too, as does the fact that both their stated reasons for becoming pirates was the fact that their only other option was death. Finally, like Zoro, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking he has Sanji's eternal enmity for]] [[spoiler:[[CallBack eating the Clear-Clear Fruit]]]].

* VillainTeleportation: [[spoiler:Van Augur gets the power of the Warp-Warp Fruit sometime during the TimeSkip, allowing him to teleport Burgess to a nearby island.]]

* DeadlyDoctor: It's in his damn epithet. What other kind of doctor goes around giving out explosive apples and carries a scythe around anyway? [[spoiler:He becomes even more deadly after he acquires the Sick-Sick Fruit, which allows him to inflict diseases on other people.]]

* EvilCounterpart: He's an evil version of Chopper, being the doctor of the crew and being tied to an animal (though Chopper ''is'' an animal while Doc Q just rides one), while having a completely opposite view of medicine. His severe illness also neatly mirrors Hiriluk, strengthening the connection, while [[spoiler:his [[{{Plaguemaster}} Devil Fruit ability]] is a very direct contrast to Chopper's dream. Chopper's goal is to become a doctor that can cure any illness whereas Doc Q weaponizes said illesses]].

* ItOnlyWorksOnce: [[spoiler:If someone overcomes a disease created by the Sick-Sick fruit, they become immune to that particular disease from then on and can even spread antibodies to those around them, immunizing them against the disease as well. Given the myriad of diseases that can possibly be created from the Sick-Sick Fruit, however, this isn’t that much of a problem.]]

* {{Plaguemaster}}: [[spoiler:Doc Q's Sick-Sick Fruit lets him conjure and spread diseases among his enemies, and given this includes a disease that [[GenderBender causes men to instantly transform into women]], they don't seem bound by conventional disease concepts either.]]

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The manga flip-flops on his naming as he's called "Shiliew" in previous chapters but "Shiryu" in chapter 925.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: "Van Augur" is how his name is spelled in the original manga, while the Viz and edited Funimation versions use "Van Ogre" and the uncut Funimation release uses "Van Auger". The Viz translation later uses the "Van Augur" spelling.

The two of them have a connection with drinking-Brook uses tea for relaxing where as Vasco Shot drinks booze for no reason other than to get piss-drunk. Vasco Shot is indicated to use his Devil Fruit as a source of fire in combat, in contrast to Brook's ice-based abilities. And while Brook is a ChivalrousPervert, Vasco Shot is heavily implied to be [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil anything but]].

* CoolGun: He carries Senriku, a large rifle with detailed carvings on it that is as long as he is tall (and Augur is very tall).

* SuperpowerLottery: He has a Devil Fruit ability that allows him to increase his size. Combined with his already large size due to being a giant, he's able to grow so big that he makes even giants look a gecko in comparison. What's truly significant about this power, however, is that it allows him to bypass the standard Devil Fruit weakness of the inability to swim since he can become huge enough to walk on the ocean floor with plenty of his body still above water. Because of this, he is not rendered immobile, allowing him to traverse the ocean waters freely without a ship, and he's more than huge enough that even the largest and most ferocious sea monsters would likely be little more than pests to him. However, being in water still saps him of his strength as he notes that he's exhausted walking from Marineford to the New World.

* TheDragon: Since his joining with the Blackbeard Pirates, Shiryu has been presented as a prominent member and foil standing next to Blackbeard himself. The color page spread of chapter 1031 seemingly cements this role, where Shiryu is depicted alongside other prominent right-hand men characters[[note]]Zoro, Bepo, Rayleigh, Beckman, King, Katakuri, Killer, Marco and Sabo[[/note]]. According to Oda, he drew the respective second strongest members of each group, and since the color spread was drawn before Kuzan's reveal as the tenth Titanic Captain, Shiryu is at least one of the strongest three members of the Blackbeard Pirates.
